Native American Early Adolescents Response To A Cultural-Based Prevention For Obesity, Melessa N. Kelley Jan 2016

Native American Early Adolescents Response To A Cultural-Based Prevention For Obesity, Melessa N. Kelley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Over the past 30 years, obesity has increased rapidly as an epidemic and major public health concern in the United Stated, particularly among Native American children and adolescents. Native American adolescents have the highest prevalence rates of obesity of all ethnic groups in the United States. Although there has been an increasing effort to develop and evaluate obesity prevention programs for children and adolescents, very little attention has been devoted to understanding culturally effective approaches for ethnic populations. There is a significant gap in the research literature regarding effective obesity intervention and prevention studies for Native American children and adolescents. …

Natural Product Studies Of Marine Organisms From The Western Atlantic, Andrew Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The projects described in this dissertation are focused on compounds derived from marine organisms collected from the western Atlantic marine environment. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the study of natural products chemistry, marine natural products, and overview of the research undertaken from natural product chemists. Chapter 2 describes the isolation and structure elucidation of a series of rare diterpenoids from the gorgonian Briareum asbestinum, together with their conformational analysis and biosynthetic interconversions. These rare diterpenes from Briareum asbestinum are linked by an unusual transannular oxa-6π electrocyclization which is described in detail and this work demonstates the biomimetic hemisynthesis of …

Of Mice, Men And Memories: The Role Of The Rodent Hippocampus In Object Recognition, Sarah J. Cohen Jan 2016

Of Mice, Men And Memories: The Role Of The Rodent Hippocampus In Object Recognition, Sarah J. Cohen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Establishing appropriate animal models for the study of human memory is paramount to the development of memory disorder treatments. Damage to the hippocampus, a medial temporal lobe brain structure, has been implicated in the memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. In humans, the role of the hippocampus is largely defined; yet, its role in rodents is much less clear due to conflicting findings. To investigate these discrepancies, an extensive review of the rodent literature was conducted, with a focus on studies that used the Novel Object Recognition (NOR) paradigm for testing. The total amount of time the …

Peripheral Object Recognition In Naturalistic Scenes, Derrick Schlangen Jan 2016

Peripheral Object Recognition In Naturalistic Scenes, Derrick Schlangen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Most of the human visual field falls in the periphery, and peripheral processing is important for normal visual functioning. Yet, little is known about peripheral object recognition in naturalistic scenes and factors that modulate this ability. We propose that a critical function of scene and object memory is in order to facilitate visual object recognition in the periphery. In the first experiment, participants identified objects in scenes across different levels of familiarity and contextual information within the scene. We found that familiarity with a scene resulted in a significant increase in the distance that objects were recognized. Furthermore, we found …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of this research is to accurately match the calculation environment, i.e. the treatment planning system (TPS) with the measurement environment (using a 2-D diode array) for lung Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) patient-specific quality assurance (QA). Furthermore, a new phantom was studied in which the 2-D array and heterogeneities were incorporated into the patient-specific QA process for lung SBRT. Dual source dual energy computerized tomography (DSCT) and single energy computerized tomography (SECT) were used to model phantoms incorporating a 2-D diode array into the TPS. A water-equivalent and a heterogeneous phantom (simulating the thoracic region of a patient) …

Physiological Effects Of Disorientation In Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) And Green (Chelonia Mydas) Sea Turtle Hatchlings, Karen Pankaew Jan 2016

Physiological Effects Of Disorientation In Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) And Green (Chelonia Mydas) Sea Turtle Hatchlings, Karen Pankaew

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Following nest emergence, sea turtle hatchling dispersal can be disrupted by artificial light or skyglow from urban areas. Mis- or disorientation increases exposure to predation, thermal stress, and dehydration, could consume valuable energy, and thus influence the likelihood of survival. This study utilized laboratory simulations of extended crawl distances and field observations to investigate the energy cost of disorientation crawling on loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green (Chelonia mydas) sea turtle hatchlings and the impact on the subsequent swim frenzy. Extended crawls increased oxygen consumption, decreased plasma glucose, and reduced green hatchling swim performance following a 200m crawl. Surprisingly, plasma lactate …

Yuli's Story: Using Educational Policy To Achieve Cultural Genocide, Katrina Johnson Leon

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

All children residing in the United States have the right to a quality education. At least that is our collective expectation. Through the lived experience of Yuli, a Native American woman from the Southwest, you will discover, due to her birth on a remote reservation, she was not given the same access to education you or I would expect. On Yuli’s reservation, the school system is managed by the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). Rather than provide K-12 schooling, the BIE operates K-8 on her reservation and then Native youth who want to go to high school must move off-reservation. …

Pharmaceuticals In Soils Of Lower Income Countries: Physico-Chemical Fate And Risks From Wastewater Irrigation., Katherine Lees, Mark Fitzsimons, Jason Snape, Alan Tappin, Sean Comber

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Population growth, increasing affluence, and greater access to medicines have led to an increase in active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) entering sewerage networks. In areas with high wastewater reuse, residual quantities of APIs may enter soils via irrigation with treated, partially treated, or untreated wastewater and sludge. Wastewater used for irrigation is currently not included in chemical environmental risk assessments and requires further consideration in areas with high water reuse. This study critically assesses the contemporary understanding of the occurrence and fate of APIs in soils of low and lower-middle income countries (LLMIC) in order to contribute to the development of …

Gender, Architectural Education, And The Accruing Of Capital, I Troiani Jan 2016

Gender, Architectural Education, And The Accruing Of Capital, I Troiani

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This chapter traces some of the reasons for lack of equal gender progression. It does so through analysis of the relationship between gender and architectural education, from entry to graduation, in order to reveal how the performativity of gender at university influences an individual's prospects to acquire optimal social, cultural, and economic capital in their post-university working life. In the United Kingdom and United States women are now undertaking a vocational architectural education at university at a rate mostly equal to or greater than men. While architecture schools undertake their own internal assessments on gender split and recruitment, there has …

Geography And Post-Phenomenology, James Ash, Paul Simpson Jan 2016

Geography And Post-Phenomenology, James Ash, Paul Simpson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper examines geography’s engagements with phenomenology. Tracing phenomenology’s influence, from early humanist reflections on the lifeworld to non-representational theories of practice, the paper identifies the emergence of a distinct post-phenomenological way of thinking. However, there is currently no clear articulation of what differentiates post-phenomenology from phenomenology as a set of theories or ideas, nor is there a clear set of trajectories along which such difference can be pursued further. In response to this, the paper outlines three key elements that differentiate phenomenology from post-phenomenology and that require further exploration. First is a rethinking of intentionality as an emergent relation …

Identification Of Blood Biomarkers For Use In Point Of Care Diagnosis Tool For Alzheimer's Disease, E. Jammeh, P. Zhao, C. Carroll, S. Pearson, E. Ifeachor

Peninsula Medical School

Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is widely regarded as necessary to allow treatment to be started before irreversible damage to the brain occur and for patients to benefit from new therapies as they become available. Low-cost point-of-care (PoC) diagnostic tools that can be used to routinely diagnose AD in its early stage would facilitate this, but such tools require reliable and accurate biomarkers. However, traditional biomarkers for AD use invasive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and/or expensive neuroimaging techniques together with neuropsychological assessments. Blood-based PoC diagnostics tools may provide a more cost and time efficient way to assess AD to …

Mass-Participation Architecture: Social Media And The Decentralisation Of Architectural Agency As A Commercial Imperative, Alexander Lorimer Jan 2016

Mass-Participation Architecture: Social Media And The Decentralisation Of Architectural Agency As A Commercial Imperative, Alexander Lorimer

School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses

A key problem in the field of architecture and urban planning since the 1960s has been the marginal role played by the general public in directly shaping significant aspects of the built environment. This thesis draws on theories around participatory planning, and in particular, the seminal 1969 publication ‘Non-plan: An Experiment in Freedom’. Non-plan suggested the potential of digital technology to facilitate self-organising public participation in architectural design and urban planning, while also taking inspiration from consumer- responsive activities across commercial disciplines. Now, half a century later, advancing web-technologies are beginning to facilitate mass-participatory design as a commercial imperative, and …

An Evaluation Of The Toxicity And Bioaccumulation Of Bismuth In The Coastal Environment Using Three Species Of Macroalga, James Kearns, Andrew Turner Jan 2016

An Evaluation Of The Toxicity And Bioaccumulation Of Bismuth In The Coastal Environment Using Three Species Of Macroalga, James Kearns, Andrew Turner

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Bismuth is a heavy metal whose biogeochemical behaviour in the marine environment is poorly defined. In this study, we exposed three different species of macroalgae (the chlorophyte, Ulva lactuca, the phaeophyte, Fucus vesiculosus, and the rhodophyte, Chondrus crispus) to different concentrations of Bi (up to 50 g L-1) under controlled, laboratory conditions. After a period of 48-h, the phytotoxicity of Bi was measured in terms of chlorophyll fluorescence quenching, and extracellular and intracellular accumulation of Bi determined after EDTA extraction and acid digestion, respectively. For all algae, both the internalisation and total accumulation of Bi were proportional to the concentration …

Baghdad’S Thirdspace: Between Liminality, Anti-Structures And Territorial Mappings, Sana Murrani Jan 2016

Baghdad’S Thirdspace: Between Liminality, Anti-Structures And Territorial Mappings, Sana Murrani

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Wedged in-between the dense urban grain of Baghdad, blast walls of t-shaped concrete have littered the streets and neighbourhoods since 2003, after the US led invasion. The idiosyncrasy of these walls lies in their exaggerated spatial liminality. They appear, change location and disappear overnight, and on a daily basis, leaving Iraqis to navigate through labyrinths of in-between spaces. This article critically reveals the new social and power structures that have emerged in the context of the city in response to the condition resulting from this unique urban intervention. This uncanny spatial and social condition of permanent liminality will be analysed …
