Resistance Of Escherichia Coli From Rectal Swab Culture In Hemato-Oncology Wards, Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya, Rahmi Rusanti, Igaa Putri Sri Rejeki
Folia Medica Indonesiana
Malignant hematology patients in the hospital are particularly susceptible to infection associated with endogenous microorganism originating from their own body. The most common etiology of infection is bacteria from gastrointestinal tract. Escherichia coli is a gram-negative facultative anaerobic bacteria, and part of the intestinal normal flora. However, E. coli is the most common cause of nosocomial infection. Resistance of E. coli to antibiotics has been widely reported. The aim of this study was to identify the development of antibiotic resistant properties of Escherichia coli from rectal swab of malignant hematology pediatric patients. A descriptive study of collected secondary data on …

Magazine Influence On Body Dissatisfaction: Fashion Vs. Health?, Paulina Swiatkowski
Magazine Influence On Body Dissatisfaction: Fashion Vs. Health?, Paulina Swiatkowski
Faculty Publications
Fashion magazines have been shown to have a negative relationship with body dissatisfaction and psychological health, while the effects of health magazines on body dissatisfaction and psychological health have mainly been studied with men. However, because of gender differences, health magazine consumption effects on men cannot be applied equally to women. Therefore, the present study uses sociocultural theory to study health magazine and possible similarities to fashion magazine effects on women’s body dissatisfaction and drive for thinness. Sociocultural attitude toward appearance is then explored as a mediator and potential moderator in the established relationship between magazine consumption and psychological health, …

Syndepositional Diagenetic Control Of Molybdenum Isotope Variations In Carbonate Sediments From The Bahamas, Stephen J. Romaniello, Achim D. Herrmann, Ariel D. Anbar
Faculty Publications
© 2016 Elsevier B.V. Molybdenum (Mo) isotope variations recorded in black shales provide important constraints on marine paleoredox conditions. However, suitable shales are not ubiquitous in the geologic record. Moreover, reliable reconstruction of Mo isotope records from shales requires deposition from a water column containing very high concentrations of sulfide-a condition which is both rare and difficult to verify with certainty when examining preserved sediments. The utility of Mo isotopic records could be improved if reconstructions were possible using alternative lithologies, such as marine carbonates, which are more abundant in the geologic record. Here, we focus on the role of early …

Video Capture And Post-Processing Technique For Approximating 3d Projectile Trajectory, Chase M. Pfeifer, Judith M. Burnfield, Guilherme M. Cesar, Max H. Twedt, Jeff A. Hawks
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this paper we introduce a low-cost procedure and methodology for markerless projectile tracking in three-dimensional (3D) space. Understanding the 3D trajectory of an object in flight can often be essential in examining variables relating to launch and landing conditions. Many systems exist to track the 3D motion of projectiles but are often constrained by space or the type of object the system can recognize (Qualisys, Göteborg, Sweden; Vicon, Oxford, United Kingdom; Opti-Track, Corvallis, Oregon USA; Motion Analysis, Santa Rosa, California USA; Flight Scope, Orlando, Florida USA). These technologies can also be quite expensive, often costing hundreds of thousand dollars. …
Identification Of Hot Spots In Protein Structures Using Gaussian Network Model And Gaussian Naive Bayes, H Zhang, T Jiang, Guogen Shan
Identification Of Hot Spots In Protein Structures Using Gaussian Network Model And Gaussian Naive Bayes, H Zhang, T Jiang, Guogen Shan
Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research
Residue fluctuations in protein structures have been shown to be highly associated with various protein functions. Gaussian network model (GNM), a simple representative coarse-grained model, was widely adopted to reveal function-related protein dynamics. We directly utilized the high frequency modes generated by GNM and further performed Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB) to identify hot spot residues. Two coding schemes about the feature vectors were implemented with varying distance cutoffs for GNM and sliding window sizes for GNB based on tenfold cross validations: one by using only a single high mode and the other by combining multiple modes with the highest frequency. …
Soil Microbial Biomass And Function Are Altered By 12 Years Of Crop Rotation, Marshall D. Mcdaniel, A. Stuart Grandy
Soil Microbial Biomass And Function Are Altered By 12 Years Of Crop Rotation, Marshall D. Mcdaniel, A. Stuart Grandy
Faculty Publications
Declines in plant diversity will likely reduce soil microbial biomass, alter microbial functions, and threaten the provisioning of soil ecosystem services. We examined whether increasing temporal plant biodiversity in agroecosystems (by rotating crops) can partially reverse these trends and enhance soil microbial biomass and function. We quantified seasonal patterns in soil microbial biomass, respiration rates, extracellular enzyme activity, and catabolic potential three times over one growing season in a 12-year crop rotation study at the W. K. Kellogg Biological Station LTER. Rotation treatments varied from one to five crops in a 3-year rotation cycle, but all soils were sampled under …

From Recovery To Discovery: Ethnic American Science Fiction And (Re)Creating The Future, Daoine S. Bachran
English Language and Literature ETDs
My project assesses how science fiction by writers of color challenges the scientific racism embedded in genetics, nuclear development, digital technology, and molecular biology, demonstrating how these fields are deployed disproportionately against people of color. By contextualizing current scientific development with its often overlooked history and exposing the full life cycle of scientific practices and technological changes, ethnic science fiction authors challenge science’s purported objectivity and make room for alternative scientific methods steeped in Indigenous epistemologies. The first chapter argues that genetics is deployed disproportionally against black Americans, from the pseudo-scientific racial classifications of the nineteenth century and earlier through …

Using Auditory Feedback To Improve Striking For Mixed Martial Artists, Frank Krukauskas Krukauskas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to evaluate, auditory feedback as a training procedure to increase the effectiveness of throwing a "right cross.” Auditory feedback was evaluated in multiple baselines across behaviors design with 4 mixed martial arts students, two males and two females, 25-54 years old. The percentage of correct steps of the right crosses.” was stable .during baseline for all participants improved substantially following the introduction of the auditory feedback, and maintained at 90 percent or more for all participants during follow-up.
Trophic Ecology And Habitat Use Of Atlantic Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus ), Benjamin Neal Kurth
Trophic Ecology And Habitat Use Of Atlantic Tarpon (Megalops Atlanticus ), Benjamin Neal Kurth
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fish can have complex life histories and use multiple habitats and resources throughout their life span. Consequently, their life histories are often poorly understood. The Atlantic Tarpon, Megalops atlanticus, is a large, typically migratory, elopomorph fish that is both ecologically and economically important. Atlantic Tarpon are under threat due to regional exploitation, loss of natal and juvenile habitat, poor water management, and offshore impacts. In addition, little is known about its lifelong habitat and resource use. In Chapter 1, I used stable isotope analysis of eye lens δ13C and δ15N values to explore patterns in …
Biomarker Detection At Risk Forecasting Level Using Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence Combined With Surface Acoustic Wave, Jun Liu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) technique is used to lower the detection limit of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) which is able to be utilized in forecasting the risk of having certain kinds of cancers, especially colon and rectal cancer. By incubating silver nanocubes (Ag NCs) on the surface of the chips, the detection limit goes down to below 1ng/mL of CEA. Also, when combining MEF with surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices, the incubation time between antigen and antibody will decrease significantly with the fluorescence signal keeping similar or higher level.
Whiting Events Off Southwest Florida: Remote Sensing And Field Observations, Jacqueline Long
Whiting Events Off Southwest Florida: Remote Sensing And Field Observations, Jacqueline Long
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
“Whiting” is a term used to describe a sharply defined patch of water that contains high levels of suspended, fine-grained calcium carbonate (CaCO3). These features are named for their bright (at times white) appearance when compared to surrounding waters, and have been found to occur globally, persisting for multiple consecutive days. Although whitings have been widely studied using chemical, biological, geological, and physical techniques, there has been little effort to document their spatio-temporal distributions in a systematic way, not to mention the lack of consensus on what generates whitings and allows them to persist for days to weeks …
The Effect Of The Antecedent Dry Conditions On Nitrogen Removal For A Modified Bioretention System, Mackenzie Peterson
The Effect Of The Antecedent Dry Conditions On Nitrogen Removal For A Modified Bioretention System, Mackenzie Peterson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Eutrophication is defined as the ‘over enrichment’ of a water body from nutrients, resulting in uncontrolled growth of primary producers, leading to periods of oxygen depletion from decomposition of the algal organic matter. According to the 2010 Water Infrastructure Needs and Investment (a U.S. Congressional Report), 40% of U.S. water bodies are contaminated with pollutants, including nutrients. Non-point sources of nutrient pollution are a major cause of this reduction in water quality. One way to decrease eutrophication is to manage nutrients found in stormwater runoff, before they reach a receiving water body.
Bioretention cells containing an internal water storage zone …

Economic Analysis With Systematically Biased Agents, Mark Schneider
Economic Analysis With Systematically Biased Agents, Mark Schneider
ESI Working Papers
A tenet of behavioral economics is that biases are systematic and should have visible effects in economic applications. Expected utility maximization has been widely applied in economic analysis, but progress has been slower incorporating 'systematically biased' agents into applications involving risk. This contrasts with the widespread application of present-biased preferences in intertemporal settings. To address this gap, we advocate a model of quasi-rank dependent probability weighting as a natural analog to quasi-hyperbolic discounting for decisions under risk. The model satisfies stochastic dominance and transitivity and transforms individual rather than cumulative probabilities. We illustrate the model’s tractability in several economic applications.

Hässeldala – A Key Site For Last Termination Climate Events In Northern Europe, B Wohlfarth, F Muschitiello, S Greenwood, A Andersson, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Last Termination (19 000-11 000 a BP) with its rapid and distinct climate shifts provides a perfect laboratory to study the nature and regional impact of climate variability. The sedimentary succession from the ancient lake at Hässeldala Port in southern Sweden with its distinct Lateglacial/early Holocene stratigraphy (>14.1-9.5 cal. ka BP) is one of the few chronologically well- constrained, multi-proxy sites in Europe that capture a variety of local and regional climatic and environmental signals. Here we present Hässeldala’s multi- proxy records (lithology, geochemistry, pollen, diatoms, chironomids, biomarkers, hydrogen isotopes) in a refined age model and place the …
The Psychological Concept Of “Person”, Kristin Andrews
The Psychological Concept Of “Person”, Kristin Andrews
Animal Sentience
Reluctance to overextend personhood seems to drive many of the skeptical responses in the first round of commentaries on Rowlands's target article. Despite Rowlands’s straightforward Response that we already accept some nonhumans as persons, there is still hesitation to accept that other nonhuman animals are persons. Rowlands's argument is sound but the skeptics don’t accept the Lockean notion of person. The metaphysical sense of person is a psychological one, however, and psychological properties grant one moral status according to many ethical theories.
