Eastern hemlock, Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr (Pinales: Pinaceae), is an important component of both the urban and forest landscape of the eastern United States. Eastern hemlock has been heavily impacted by the introduction of the hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae (Annand) (Hemiptera: Adelgidae). Chestnut blight is a devastating canker disease of numerous Castanea spp. resulting from the infection of wounds by Cryphonectria parasitica. The restoration of American chestnut has been pursued through the generation of blight resistant American x Chinese hybrids and employment of virulence attenuating hypoviruses of C. parasitica. As numerous scholars have noted, the law takes a strikingly incoherent approach to adolescent reproduction. States overwhelmingly allow a teenage girl to independently consent to pregnancy care and medical treatment for her child, and even to give up her child for adoption, all without notice to her parents, but require parental notice or consent for abortion. This Article argues that this oft-noted contradiction in the law on teenage reproductive decision making is in fact not as contradictory as it first appears. Over the last 25 years there has been increasing recognition of the role that traumatic stress plays in a wide range of health, mental health, and social problems affecting client populations served by social workers. Traumatic stress is generated by conditions in one's external environment, mediated by internal cognitive processes, and stored in the physical body. Generalist social work practitioners are trained to address conditions of the environment through a social justice lens and to help clients think through logical steps of a problem-solving or change process. The midcontinent of the United States has thousands of documented caves. These caves contain cave sediments, which are the accumulation of biological, geological, and anthropological debris. At this time there is no known database for trace metals of cave sediments of the midcontinent United States. Considering that caves host a wide variety of life, it is important to create a database to examine potential effects of trace metals on cave systems. The way in which the United States has come to practice agriculture has changed drastically over the past century. As urban populations have grown and rural populations dwindled, research focused on raising production levels and decreasing costs led to the increasingly common practice of low-dose and long-term application of antibiotics to animals being raised for slaughter. Yeast dynamin, Vps1, is a dynamic protein implicated in multiple trafficking pathways and at several cellular locations including the Golgi, endosome, and vacuole. Previous studies have found that Vps1 genetically and physically interacts with several ESCRT-II (Vps22, Vps36) and ESCRT-III (Vps2, Vps24) components. In light of these findings, little is known about how Vps1 functions with the ESCRT system. In my study, I have mapped the interaction domains between Vps1 and Vps22/Vps36 as well as explored the potential roles of these proteins during the targeting of vacuolar hydrolase, Cps1. Current research in writing apprehension lacks evaluation of psychology course effectiveness in reducing this trepidation. The present study focused on three psychology courses and utilized Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1985, 2002) and student instructor rapport to assess changes in writing apprehension. Participants (N = 78) from three upperclass level courses completed the Basic Psychological Needs Scale (BPNS), Academic Motivation Scale (AMS), Daly-Miller Writing Apprehension Test-Revised (WAT-R), and Student Instructor Rapport Scale (SIRS-9) at the beginning and end of the semester. Even though pre-/post-test differences were non-significant for all three courses, the Experimental Psychology class exhibited the greatest decrease …

Recovery of the P53 tumor suppressor pathway via small molecule inhibitors of onco-protein MDM2 highlights the critical role of computational methodologies in targeted cancer therapies. Molecular docking programs in particular, provide a quantitative ranking of predicted binding geometries based on binding free energy allowing for the screening of large chemical libraries in search of lead compounds for cancer therapeutics. This study found improved binding mode predictions of medicinal compounds to MDM2 using the popular docking programs AutoDock and AutoDock Vina, while adopting a rigid-ligand/flexible-receptor protocol. The Snf2/Swi2 ATPases Rad5 and Rad16 have been shown to play vital roles in a number of DNA repair pathways. In both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and human cell lines, Rad5 homologs (SHPRH, HLTF) have been shown to function in DNA double strand break (DSB) repair along with pathways that repair damage after replication. The function of Rad16, unlike Rad5, has been found only in lower eukaryotes such as Saccharomyces, despite the fact that it plays an essential role in nucleotide excision repair (NER), and more specifically in the repair of silenced areas of the genome. The design of one-dimensional nickel wires were attempted. Metal complexes of hydrated Cu(II) and Ni(II) with several cyanoximates were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, thermal analysis, IR-, electronic- (solid state diffuse reflectance) spectroscopy, and the X-ray analysis (powder diffraction and single crystal studies). Hydrolysis of the HECO and HMeCO cyanoxime ligands leads to the formation of another dianionic cyanoxime – AACO2-, which forms multimetallic Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes and oxamide as a side product. As a result of the citizenry’s increased awareness of this fact, states are requiring food manufacturers to disclose which of their products are genetically modified. However, within the context of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, state-mandated labeling of genetically modified food stands on an infirm foothold. The Questions-Answer Relationship (QAR) is a reading strategy that guides student comprehension by allowing the student to demonstrate their ability to determine importance, make inferences, and monitor comprehension through questions. The study was conducted on high school students in physical science to determine if the implementation of the QAR would improve content area literacy knowledge and confidence from pre-test and post-test data. Pedagogies included modeling, collaboration, independent work, guided practice, direct instruction, and inquiry laboratories. SDL has developed a novel Compact Eyesafe Lidar System (CELiS) designed to monitor airborne particulate matter (PM) emissions. It uses a 1.57 µm wavelength commercial laser, an 8 inch off-axis parabolic mirror, and a 200 µm diameter InGaAs avalanche photodetector (APD). The laser, mirror, and APD are mounted on a carbon fiber breadboard and housed in an environmentally-sealed housing. CELiS can operate over an 80°C temperature range with an optical path change of only 100 µm.

This Article, the fifth in a series of five, completes the author’s detailed analysis of how federal courts have interpreted each element of the Clean Water Act (CWA) offense. Compiling statistics across the four prior articles, it draws conclusions about statutory interpretation in general, finding that the depth of legal analysis increases with the level of court; that environmentally positive results decrease with the level of court; that courts use only a small number of canons and other interpretive devices; that their uses of interpretive devices change over time; and that interpretive devices are not all outcome-neutral. The law recognizes a right to legal redress for exposure to food that is tainted in the sense of being toxic or poisonous, but what about exposure to food products individuals find socially, morally, or religiously repugnant? The ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education offers the opportunity to rethink information literacy teaching and curriculum. However, the ACRL's rescinded Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education correlate with the preferred research and decision-making model of the health sciences, evidence-based practice. Through a partnership, librarians and faculty can use all three to develop a curriculum map composed of a series of research assignments and library instruction delivered over the course of a two-year undergraduate allied health program. Lung cancer screening identifies cancers with heterogeneous behaviors. Some lung cancers will be identified among patients who had prior negative CT screens and upon follow-up scans develop a de novo nodule that was determined to be cancerous. Other lung cancers will be identified among patients who had one or more prior stable positive scans that were not determined to be lung cancer (indeterminate pulmonary nodules), but in follow-up scans was diagnosed with an incidence lung cancer.
