Reduction Of Fecal Coliform Bacteria Through The Elimination Of Sewage Discharges In West Virginia Streams, Kady Rogers Jan 2016

Reduction Of Fecal Coliform Bacteria Through The Elimination Of Sewage Discharges In West Virginia Streams, Kady Rogers

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Background and Objectives

Early environmental regulations such as the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1948, and the 1972 amendments—which would later become known as the Clean Water Act—have improved the quality of the drinking and recreational waters here in the United States. This has been achieved as a result of strict regulations on discharges, proper management strategies, as well as thorough sampling and testing for contaminants. One such contaminant is fecal waste; these materials are a public health concern because of the potential risk of gastrointestinal diseases. Scientists have used fecal coliforms as an indicator of the presence of …

The Effect Of Simulation Training On Nursing Students' Content Exam Scores, Lori Ann Podlinski Jan 2016

The Effect Of Simulation Training On Nursing Students' Content Exam Scores, Lori Ann Podlinski

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Simulation training has been implemented at a small nursing school in the eastern United States to improve the currently low content exam scores in nursing courses. With the guidance of Kolb's experiential learning theory, differences in 8 course content exam scores were investigated for students who received simulation training in the content area before the exam and students who received simulation training after the exam, using a quasi-experimental, comparative design. Archival exam scores from 424 content exams, 212 completed by students who received simulation training before the exam and 212 completed by students who received simulation training after the exam, …

Faculty Perceptions Of Remedial Mathematics Programs For Community College, Carolann Vassell-Kreitner Jan 2016

Faculty Perceptions Of Remedial Mathematics Programs For Community College, Carolann Vassell-Kreitner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Graduating U.S. high school students who score below standards for college-level math on college placement tests are typically required to take remedial math coursework when they enter college. However, very few students who must remediate are successful. Community college educators have tried multiple remediation approaches to improve student outcomes with minimal improvement. Since math faculty are directly involved in addressing this challenge, it is important to gauge their perceptions of math remediation. The purpose of this study was to investigate community college faculty members' perceptions of 2 models for mathematics remediation. The theoretical framework of this study was based on …

Do Ten Year Trends In Emergency Department Diagnoses Of Rhabdomyolysis In Young Adult Males Parallel The Growth In Long Distance Ultra Running?, James-Louis Niday Teixeira Jan 2016

Do Ten Year Trends In Emergency Department Diagnoses Of Rhabdomyolysis In Young Adult Males Parallel The Growth In Long Distance Ultra Running?, James-Louis Niday Teixeira

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Ultra running, a sport that consists of races above the marathon marker of 26.2 miles, has rarely been studied in depth. Little peer-reviewed scientific information examines the morbidity or disease prevalence associated with long-distance ultrarunning. Furthermore, there is an increase in reports of rhabdomyolysis within the ultrarunning community, which may coincide with an increase in the demand for long-distance ultrarunning races. This study examined the rate of hospital or emergency room admissions with a diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis and assesses if the incidence of rhabdomyolysis events in young males parallels the growth of ultrarunning. We hypothesized that: • ED diagnoses of …

A Pre-Human Baseline For Stressors Limiting Staghorn Growth: Evidence From Sub-Fossil Skeletons Preserved In Earthquake Scarps, Central Belize, Samantha L. Hargrove

Undergraduate Distinction Papers

Caribbean coral reefs have had an 80% decrease in live coral cover over the last several decades and the effect of white-band disease on Acropora species was a major contributor. The loss of Acropora resulted in a decrease of reef rugosity and habitats for fish and reef invertebrates. This paper examines the record of stressors today and in pre-human staghorn communities to examine possible changes. Acropora cervicornis fragments, estimated to be 250-750 years old, were collected from recently exposed earthquake scarps on patch reefs in the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, Central Belize. Skeletal records of stressors included damsel fish …

A Study On The Current State Of Contaminants Of Concern Research, With A Focus On Biosolids And Regulations, Maren Mariah Fulton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Master's Project Reports

Wastewater treatment plants are a major source of contaminants of emerging concern, as these facilities are the main receptors of these products via household, commercial, and industrial drains, and transport via stormwater runoff. Biosolids are composed of numerous constituents, with a number of environmentally persistent and potentially toxic contaminants of emerging concern identified as present in large concentrations. Research is needed to understand the transport and fate mechanisms of these compounds in biosolids. Additionally, this research is needed to determine a new priority framework to regulate CECs, both on the national level and regional levels. Wastewater treatment plant influent and …

Three Simple Experiments To Examine The Effect Of Sediment Pollution On Algae-Based Food Webs In Streams, Patrick M. Edwards, Rodney Shroufe

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Streams and stream macroinvertebrates are ideal natural systems for ecological inquiry. We present three simple experiments that students can use to conduct field-based investigations which illustrate the importance of algae-based food webs in streams and measure the effects of sediment pollution (scour and deposition) on stream ecological processes. Over the past 5 years, we have conducted these experiments 19 times with our students. We report on the results and reliability of these experiments and make suggestions for other educators who may want to conduct them.

Gene Changes May Minimize Masculinizing And Defeminizing Influences Of Exposure To Male Cotwins In Female Callitrichine Primates, Jeffrey A. French, Brett Frye, Jon Cavanaugh, Aaryn C. Mustoe, Lisa Rapaport, Jennifer Mickelberg

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background: Sexual differentiation in female mammals can be altered by the proximity of male littermates in utero, a phenomenon known as the intrauterine position effect (IUP). Among simian primates, callitrichines (marmosets and tamarins) are likely candidates for IUP, since they exhibit obligate dizygotic twinning and fetuses share extensive vascularization in utero. In this paper, we determined whether female reproductive parameters are altered by gestating with a male twin and evaluated changes in genes associated with anti-Müllerian and steroid hormones in twinning callitrichine primates.

Methods: We assessed the impact of gestation with male cotwins on reproductive performance and survivorship …
