Meyer, Pierce, And The History Of The Entire Human Race: Barbarism, Social Progress, And (The Fall And Rise Of) Parental Rights, Jeffrey Shulman

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This article examines the significance of the United States Supreme Court decisions in Meyer v. Nebraska and Pierce v. Society of the Sisters under the backdrop of shifting views on what constitutes appropriate state regulation of education. On its face, the question of how a state may regulate education may not seem so controversial. However, the idea that the state could mandate public education and take children from their parents conflicted with traditional views of family autonomy and parental authority.

Progress would occur with the steady diminution of state authority, but under the guidance of the court. Part I of …

Local Reports and Publications

We provide here a literature review and methodology for quantifying carbon sequestration associated with the restoration of tidal salt marshes and construction of a proposed living shoreline structure in Humboldt Bay, California. The rate of carbon sequestration can be used by the City of Arcata to quantify the benefits of restored tidal wetlands and for the City’s own carbon balance documentation. This work scope focused on a) gathering and analyzing existing data sets to estimate carbon sequestration in restoring local tidal salt marshes, b) assessing existing carbon sequestration models to quantify carbon sequestration rates; and c) performing a literature search …

Epigenetic Regulation Of Microrna Expression During Pathological Cardiac Remodeling And Fibrosis, Ludivine Renaud Jan 2016

Epigenetic Regulation Of Microrna Expression During Pathological Cardiac Remodeling And Fibrosis, Ludivine Renaud

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation aims to develop a better understanding on how epigenetics regulate microRNAs during pathological cardiac remodeling and fibrosis. Histone modifications by acetylation and/or methylation, DNA methylation and miRNAs are epigenetic mechanisms that play an essential role during development and differentiation. In the light of recent studies, there is strong evidence linking epigenetics to the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases, including cancer, fibrotic diseases and heart failure. MicroRNAs have emerged as major players in the progression of heart failure yet the transcription of microRNAs in heart failure is poorly understood. An important aspect of epigenetic regulation is cross-talk between …

Covariate Misclassification Under Covariate-Adaptive Randomization: Understanding The Impact And Method For Bias Correction, Liqiong Fan Jan 2016

Covariate Misclassification Under Covariate-Adaptive Randomization: Understanding The Impact And Method For Bias Correction, Liqiong Fan

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Covariate-adaptive randomization has been frequently used in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) because it can well balance prognostic factors between treatment groups. However when a subject is assigned a wrong covariate value or misplaced in a wrong cohort during the randomization procedure, it may not only impact the balancing of the covariate, but also influence the treatment assignment based on the assigned cohort. Furthermore, it is preferred that covariates that are adjusted during the randomization procedure should also be adjusted for in the primary analysis. It is not clear whether a corrected covariate value, if it could be ascertained, or a …

Comparative Phylogeography Of Ethiopian Anurans: Impact Of The Great Rift Valley And Pleistocene Climate Change, Xenia Freilich, Jose D. Anadon, Jolanta Bukala, Ordaliza Calderon, Ronveer Chakraborty, Stephanie Boissinot

Publications and Research

Background: The Ethiopian highlands are a biodiversity hotspot, split by the Great Rift Valley into two distinct systems of plateaus and mountains. The Rift Valley is currently hot and dry and acts as a barrier to gene flow for highland-adapted species. It is however unlikely that the conditions in the Rift were inhospitable to highland species during the entire Pleistocene. To assess the significance of the Ethiopian Rift as a biogeographic barrier as well as the impact Pleistocene climatic changes have had on the evolution of Ethiopian organisms, we performed phylogeographic analyses and developed present and past niche models on …

Quorum Sensing In Acinetobacter: With Special Emphasis On Antibiotic Resistance, Biofilm Formation And Quorum Quenching, Bindu Subhadra, Man Hwan Oh, Chul Hee Choi

Faculty Publications - Biological Sciences

Acinetobacter is an important nosocomial, opportunistic human pathogen that is gradually gaining more attention as a major health threat worldwide. Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell-cell communication system in which specific signaling molecules called autoinducers accumulate in the medium as the population density grows and control various physiological processes including production of virulence factors, biofilm and development of antibiotic resistance. The complex QS machinery in Acinetobacter is mediated by a two-component system which is homologous to the typical LuxI/LuxR system found in Gram-negative bacteria. This cell signaling system comprises of a sensor protein that functions as autoinducer synthase and a …

Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia Reactivity To A Sad Film Predicts Depression Symptom Improvement And Symptomatic Trajectory, Vanessa Panaite, Alexandra Cowden Hindash, Lauren M. Bylsma, Brent J. Small, Kristen Salomon, Johnathan Rottenberg

Psychology Faculty Publications

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) reactivity, an index of cardiac vagal tone, has been linked to self-regulation and the severity and course of depression (Rottenberg, 2007). Although initial data supports the proposition that RSA withdrawal during a sad film is a specific predictor of depression course (Fraguas, 2007; Rottenberg, 2005), the robustness and specificity of this finding are unclear. To provide a stronger test, RSA reactivity to three emotion films (happy, sad, fear) and to a more robust stressor, a speech task, were examined in currently depressed individuals (n = 37), who were assessed for their degree of symptomatic improvement over …

Comparing Economic Returns Of Red Pine Plantation Thinning Scenarios Using Forest Vegetation Simulator (Fvs), Curtis L. Vanderschaaf, Gordon Holley, Andrew Arends, Joshua Adams, Donald Deckard

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait) plantations are an important cover type of Department of Natural Resources (DNR) lands because of relatively high yields and economic value. Out of the approximate 400,000 acres of Minnesota red pine plantations one-fifth of the acreage is managed by the DNR. The DNR recently established a policy to rescind purposeful management to manage all red pine plantations to extended rotation ages, or rotation ages beyond those maximizing economic returns or biological yields. With recent state budget issues, DNR management is under greater scrutiny by the public, particularly on School Trust lands. Hence, most red pine …

Understanding The Structure And Functioning Of Polar Pelagic Ecosystems To Predict The Impacts Of Change, E. E. Murphy, R. D. Cavanagh, K. F. Drinkwater, S. M. Grant, J. J. Heymans, E. E. Hofmann, G. L. Hunt Jr., N. M. Johnston Jan 2016

Understanding The Structure And Functioning Of Polar Pelagic Ecosystems To Predict The Impacts Of Change, E. E. Murphy, R. D. Cavanagh, K. F. Drinkwater, S. M. Grant, J. J. Heymans, E. E. Hofmann, G. L. Hunt Jr., N. M. Johnston

CCPO Publications

The determinants of the structure, functioning and resilience of pelagic ecosystems across most of the polar regions are not well known. Improved understanding is essential for assessing the value of biodiversity and predicting the effects of change (including in biodiversity) on these ecosystems and the services they maintain. Here we focus on the trophic interactions that underpin ecosystem structure, developing comparative analyses of how polar pelagic food webs vary in relation to the environment. We highlight that there is not a singular, generic Arctic or Antarctic pelagic food web, and, although there are characteristic pathways of energy flow dominated by …

Reproduction And Recruitment Of American Lobster (Homarus Americanus) In The Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire, Elizabeth M. Morrissey Jan 2016

Reproduction And Recruitment Of American Lobster (Homarus Americanus) In The Great Bay Estuary, New Hampshire, Elizabeth M. Morrissey

Master's Theses and Capstones

The overall goal of this research project was to determine if lobsters reproduce and settle in the Great Bay estuary (GBE), NH. First, I mapped the distribution and abundance of ovigerous lobsters carrying late-stage eggs in the estuary, during May and June of 2015. Ovigerous lobsters were concentrated in Little Bay and adjacent sections of the Piscataqua River, with CPUE in these areas of 0.12 ± 0.02 lobsters/trap haul. Very few were found in the regions furthest from the coast. Next, egg samples were collected from these lobsters, as well as from ovigerous lobsters captured along the NH coast and …

Evaluating The Usage Of Multi-Frequency Backscatter Data As An Additional Tool For Seafloor Characterization, Anderson Barbosa Da Cruz Pecanha Jan 2016

Evaluating The Usage Of Multi-Frequency Backscatter Data As An Additional Tool For Seafloor Characterization, Anderson Barbosa Da Cruz Pecanha

Master's Theses and Capstones

A reliable understanding of seafloor characteristics can have innumerous application in a variety of fields of knowledge, such as ocean mapping and defense. In the last decades, studies associating backscatter intensity to seafloor characterization has increased based on the principle that different types of seabed may provide, a priori, different reflectivity responses patterns. Those differences in intensity can be used to attempt seafloor classification.

This thesis proposes to evaluate the potential usage of multi-frequency backscatter as an additional tool for seafloor characterization. Modern multibeam systems are able to provide high resolution bathymetry and backscatter data. The echosounder used to collect …

Oxytetracycline And Thermal Marking Of Alewife (Alosa Pseudoharengus) Otoliths, Steven M. Luell Jan 2016

Oxytetracycline And Thermal Marking Of Alewife (Alosa Pseudoharengus) Otoliths, Steven M. Luell

Master's Theses and Capstones

Alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) are anadromous clupeids native to the east coast of North America. With their population in decline, there is increasing interest in releasing hatchery-reared alewives for stock enhancement. As a result, techniques are needed to produce long-lasting marks to identify stocked fish. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the efficacy of marking alewives using oxytetracycline immersion and thermal marking techniques. Oxytetracycline marking trials consisted of immersing alewife larvae in three concentrations of oxytetracycline (200, 400, and 600 mg/L) for two durations (4 and 6 hours). Sagittal otoliths were removed and examined for marks with an epifluorescence …

Dry And Alive: Applications Of Anhydrobiosis In The Preservation Of Eukaryotic Cells, Daniel A. Webster Jan 2016

Dry And Alive: Applications Of Anhydrobiosis In The Preservation Of Eukaryotic Cells, Daniel A. Webster

Undergraduate Honors Theses

First discovered in the 1980's, late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins now play an important role in the modern paradigm of anhydrobiosis. These proteins are intrinsically disordered in the hydrated state, and gain more defined secondary structure motifs (e.g. beta-sheets and alpha-helices) during the process of dehydration. This gain in secondary structure likely plays a key role in the ability of LEA proteins to protect the machinery important to life sustaining processes within the cell during severe water stress. Methods such as high resolution respirometry offer insight into the level of protection conferred by these proteins during periods of acute water …

Effects Of Turbidity On The Vision And Behavior Of Longear Sunfish, Lindsey Denea Caudle Jan 2016

Effects Of Turbidity On The Vision And Behavior Of Longear Sunfish, Lindsey Denea Caudle

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Fish are known to use vision in many essential behaviors, including foraging, intraspecific communication and predator avoidance. Turbidity is one of the many environmental factors potentially affecting vision quality. I examined the behavior of interacting conspecific fish in varying levels of turbidity to determine how this environmental variable affects vision and behavior. Experiments were designed to observe how longear sunfish, Lepomis megalotis, reacted to visual cues - in this case a conspecific fish in a glass jar - in the presence or absence of turbidity. My hypothesis is that sunfish will display territorial behavior when introduced to another fish …

Probing The Functional Relevance Of Reactive Hippocampal Neurogenesis In A Model Of An Alcohol Use Disorder, Chelsea Rhea Geil Nickell Jan 2016

Probing The Functional Relevance Of Reactive Hippocampal Neurogenesis In A Model Of An Alcohol Use Disorder, Chelsea Rhea Geil Nickell

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacy

Alcoholism, or alcohol use disorders (AUDs), represent a major public health concern both locally and globally. Critically, excessive alcohol consumption results in neurodegeneration in brain regions such as the hippocampus which is known for its role in learning and memory. Recovery of hippocampal volume loss has been observed after prolonged abstinence, but the mechanisms underlying this process are not well understood. Adult neurogenesis is thought to contribute to this recovery since after alcohol exposure a reactive increase in adult neurogenesis is observed. This reactive neurogenesis (the process by which brain insult results in a compensatory increase in neurogenesis) may represent …

Dietetics and Human Nutrition Faculty Publications

Background. Breastfeeding is associated with a decreased risk of obesity in the early and adult years. Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPI) experience high rates of obesity which is often obfuscated with aggregated data. Using disaggregated data, we examined breastfeeding practices among NHPI. Methods. Seven databases and reference lists were searched. Two independent researchers extracted relevant studies based on predetermined criteria. Nine studies met our inclusion criteria and a meta-analysis was conducted using random-effects, inverse-various weighted models. Results. Few studies disaggregated NHPI populations when examining breastfeeding practices. Most studies were cross-sectional and our search yielded no randomized or quasirandomized control …
