Optical Emission Spectroscopy Of High Voltage Cold Atmospheric Plasma Generated Using Dielectric Barrier Discharges, Russell Scott Brayfield Ii
Optical Emission Spectroscopy Of High Voltage Cold Atmospheric Plasma Generated Using Dielectric Barrier Discharges, Russell Scott Brayfield Ii
Open Access Theses
While numerous experiments have demonstrated the efficacy of high voltage cold atmospheric pressure plasmas for extending food shelf-life and sterilizing medical instrumentation in sealed packages, the influence of the packaging material and gas composition on the reactive gas species generated by the high voltage atmospheric cold plasma is poorly understood. This study elucidates the impact of these parameters on plasma generation in sealed packages for four gases (ambient air, commercial grade compressed air, and high purity helium and nitrogen) placed in commercially available transparent plastic containers and bags. After adequate gas flushing, we observed that the container and bag individually …
Combinations Of Mutations Within Pathway Provide For Combined Trait Phenotypes In Lines With Sacpd Mutations In Soybean, Erik Lewis Gaskin
Combinations Of Mutations Within Pathway Provide For Combined Trait Phenotypes In Lines With Sacpd Mutations In Soybean, Erik Lewis Gaskin
Open Access Theses
Stearic acid is one of the five major fatty acids produced in soybean. It is an 18 carbon fully saturated lipid and is known for neutral or positive effects on LDL cholesterol when consumed by humans. Unfortunately, stearic acid only accounts for about 4% of the total seed oil produced in commodity soybean. Previous work has shown that stearic acid can reach levels as high as 28% of the total oil fraction when SACPD-C, the gene responsible for most of the stearic acid variation in soybean seed, is knocked out. In order to increase stearic acid content and create soybeans …
Diallyl Trisulfide Modulates Notch Pathway Components In Breast Cancer Cells, Violet Kiesel
Diallyl Trisulfide Modulates Notch Pathway Components In Breast Cancer Cells, Violet Kiesel
Open Access Theses
Breast cancer affects one in eight women throughout the course of their lifetimes creating an immediate demand for novel prevention strategies against this disease. The Notch signaling pathway is often aberrantly activated in human malignancies including breast cancer. Alpha secretases, including A Disintegrin and Metalloprotease (ADAM)-10 and -17, are proteases that play a key role in the cleavage of cell surface molecules and subsequent ligand-mediated activation of Notch signaling pathway. High expression levels of ADAM10 are clinically associated with lower disease-free survival in breast cancer patients. The goal of this study was to determine the effect of diallyl trisulfide (DATS), …
Biochemical Studies Of A Deubiquitinating Enzyme In Chlamydia Trachomatis, Aditya Babar
Biochemical Studies Of A Deubiquitinating Enzyme In Chlamydia Trachomatis, Aditya Babar
Open Access Theses
Chlamydia Trachomatis (C. trachomatis), a gram negative, obligate intracellular bacterium, is implicated in a variety of diseases including sexually transmitted urogenital infection, as well as ocular infection. Reliance on the host cell for its survival and propagation causes the bacterium to release various bacterial effector proteins to manipulate its host cell processes. Two of these factors which may aid in the bacterium’s survival, C. trachomatis deubiquitinase 1 (ChlaDub1) and C. trachomatis deubiquitinase 2 (ChlaDub2) are cysteine proteases which have been previously shown to exhibit deubiquitinating and deneddylating activity. In this study, constructs of ChlaDub2 were cloned, purified, and subjected to …
Differences In Context: Revealing Expert-Novice Graph Knowledge In Biology, Mozhu Li
Differences In Context: Revealing Expert-Novice Graph Knowledge In Biology, Mozhu Li
Open Access Theses
Graphs are typically defined as visual representations that depict and sometimes summarize quantitative data. Visual representation of quantitative data is broadly used in scientific textbooks, papers, and lectures as well as popular media seen in everyday life. Thus, understanding graphs and data became an essential skill for all students to master. However, correctly and fully using graphs requires a person to have multiple competencies (diSessa & Sherin, 2000). For an instance, during graph construction, variables need to be identified and characterized, data are screened and often reduced, and a graph type needs to be chosen that is appropriate for the …
A Role For The Classical Complement Pathway In Hippocampal Dendritic Injury And Hippocampal Dependent Memory Deficits In A Model Of Acquired Epilepsy, Nicole Denise Schartz
A Role For The Classical Complement Pathway In Hippocampal Dendritic Injury And Hippocampal Dependent Memory Deficits In A Model Of Acquired Epilepsy, Nicole Denise Schartz
Open Access Theses
Status epilepticus (SE) triggers pathological changes to hippocampal dendrites that may promote epileptogenesis. The microtubule associated protein 2 (Map2) helps stabilize microtubules of the dendritic cytoskeleton. Recently, we reported a substantial decline in Map2 that coincided with robust microglia accumulation in the CA1 hippocampal region after an episode of SE. A spatial correlation between Map2 loss and reactive microglia was also reported in human cortex from refractory epilepsy. New evidence supports that microglia are guided by proteins of the classical complement pathway (C1q and C3) to prune dendritic structures. Furthermore, components of complement have been shown to be upregulated in …

An Economic Assessment Of Household Unwanted Medicine Disposal Programs, Sofia Katherina Vielma Delano
Open Access Theses
There has been increasing concern about the environmental impact of pharmaceutical accumulations in surface and groundwater over the last two decades due to their improper disposal. Improper storage of these pharmaceuticals at home also poses a public health concern given its association with drug abuse and accidental poisoning. Several states in the U.S., including those bordering the Great Lakes, have implemented medicine take-back programs to help mitigate problems associated with unused and unwanted pharmaceuticals kept in households. Although positive benefits for society and the environment have been reported for these programs, the perceived monetary value has not been estimated. This …
The Perceptual Impact Of Naming Colors, Sun Young Ahn
The Perceptual Impact Of Naming Colors, Sun Young Ahn
Open Access Theses
Color is a spectrum of light, and a color is defined by its three physical properties, hue, value and intensity. When colors come to the discourse in the real life or industries, they are communicated by their names. Especially, the industries that mainly deal with colors as their products develop their own unique color-naming system while ordinary people tend to use general color names such as red, light blue or dark green. Color names not only define physical properties of a color, but also contribute to building an impression of a color by stimulating associations.

Avian Retinal Photoreceptor Detection And Classification Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Edward Durham Collier
Avian Retinal Photoreceptor Detection And Classification Using Convolutional Neural Networks, Edward Durham Collier
Open Access Theses
Avian retinas contain special light filtering cones called photoreceptors. These photoreceptors help filter out specific wavelengths of light, giving birds a good range of distinction between colors. There are five distinct types of photoreceptors: red, yellow, transparent, colorless and principle. A specific photoreceptor can be identified by an organelle called an oil droplet. Dectecting and classifying the oil droplets is currently done by hand which can be a time consuming process. Using computer vision detecting and classifying the photoreceptors can be done automatically. The recent introduction of deep learning in computer vision has revolutionized automatic classification, producing classification results identical …

Establishing And Improving Control Strategies That Sustain Plant Health In A Botanical Bio-Filter, Bhargav Ronjoy Rajkhowa
Establishing And Improving Control Strategies That Sustain Plant Health In A Botanical Bio-Filter, Bhargav Ronjoy Rajkhowa
Open Access Theses
This research is a study of the effectiveness of the mechanical, hydroponic and software components of a biowall that improves indoor air quality through plant assisted phytoremediation. The research investigates the ability of the device to sustain plant health in a controlled environment over an extended period. This is because, the biowall has intermittent airflow through it. This airflow, has a detrimental effect on the health of the plants in the biowall. After studying the horticultural and mechanical aspects needed to operate a biowall, appropriate control algorithms were developed. These algorithms controlled the biowall’s lights, irrigation, and fan.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are biologically inspired feed forward artificial neural networks. The artificial neurons in CNNs are connected in a manner similar to the neurons in the mammalian visual system. CNNs are currently used for image recognition, semantic segmentation, natural language processing, playing video games and many other applications. A CNN can consist of millions of neurons that require billions of computations to produce a single output.
The Effect Of Adjuvants On Apple Disease Management, Chelsi Patricia Abbott
The Effect Of Adjuvants On Apple Disease Management, Chelsi Patricia Abbott
Open Access Theses
The management of common apple diseases such as apple scab ( Venturia inaequalis) and bitter rot (Colletotrichum spp.) relies heavily on effective fungicide applications. However, the development of fungicide resistance to newer fungicides has resulted in management failures and significant economic losses. This has led to a greater reliance on captan, an older fungicide, because there is a low risk of pathogens developing resistance. Label restrictions limit growers to 18 kg of captan per season, which may not provide sufficient control of both apple scab and bitter rot in wet years. Consequently, apple growers are faced with two …

Investigating The Toluene Removal Of A Botanical Air Filter With A Loose-Packed Growth Media For Potential Energy Savings, Osama Saad Alraddadi
Open Access Theses
The research of this thesis developed experiments inside a sealed environmental chamber to examine the effectiveness of a botanical air filter with an assisting fan and a loose-packed growth media (i.e., Biowall) in removing toluene from air. Through injecting a known amount of toluene and continuously monitoring its decay inside the environmental chamber, five different toluene decay rates were quantified: the natural decay rate (empty chamber), the decay rates with the presence of the Biowall for two different fan speeds, and the decay rates with the presence of growth media without the plants for dry and wet conditions. The clean …
A Micromechanical Fracture Model For Ductile-Brittle Interfaces, Dhrubajyoti Datta
A Micromechanical Fracture Model For Ductile-Brittle Interfaces, Dhrubajyoti Datta
Open Access Theses
The micromechanical properties of a bimaterial interface depend on the (i) bonded slip and friction parameters (ii) release of fracture energy during crack growth and (iii) propagation, residual energy and shape formulations defining the failure envelope. A non-empirical fracture model is proposed for a ductile-brittle bimaterial interface. Such interfaces occur in Steel-Concrete (SC) composite wall modules, which are building blocks of nuclear and containment facilities. Similar bimaterial interfaces can occur in geotechnical structures, aerospace, ceramics and other composite applications. The thesis identifies the primary microstructural failure modes associated with such interfaces. A controlled volume fracture model for adhesively bonded interfaces …

Pcsk9 Inhibitors: A Review Of The Efficacy, Safety And Current Literature Recommendations, Lacey L. Jandrin
Pcsk9 Inhibitors: A Review Of The Efficacy, Safety And Current Literature Recommendations, Lacey L. Jandrin
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed counties. It is estimated that 60 million Americans have LDL-C levels > 160 mg/dl. Only about 1/3 of these patients meet treated LDL cholesterol goals of < 70 mg/dl indicating a need for greater control. High dose statins have been the mainstay in treatment of dyslipidemia, however, up to 20% of patients are statin intolerant indicating a need for secondary treatment strategies. This lead to the development of monoclonal antibodies to proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors. PCSK9 inhibitors result in decreased destruction of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) which leads to an increase in the transport of LDL-C to its destruction effectively reducing LDL-C levels in the blood. The purpose of this study is to analyze the literature available on the efficacy and safety of new PCSK9 inhibitors. The results of this literature review indicated that PCSK9 inhibitors effectively lowered LDL-C by an average of approximately 50%. The evidence reviewed by this analysis indicate that 70% of patients treated with PCSK9 inhibitors met LDL-C goals. The findings also indicate that the side effects associated with this new class of medications are comparable to current side effects seen with traditional cholesterol lowering agents. The largest side effect seen in up to 10% of patients were injection site reactions and did not require discontinuation of the medication. The results of this analysis indicate that PCSK9 inhibitors may be of benefit in patients who are statin intolerant, do not meet LDL-C goals on traditional statin therapy or have familial hypercholesterolemia. Education in use of injectables, cost and insurance coverage and dosing schedule are likely to be areas of continued research and may affect use of this new class of cholesterol lowering agents.
Biodegradation Of Lignin By Fungi, Bacteria And Laccases, Fnu Asina
Biodegradation Of Lignin By Fungi, Bacteria And Laccases, Fnu Asina
Theses and Dissertations
Lignin, a heterogeneous three-dimensional biopolymer, is one of the building blocks of lignocellulosic biomass. Due to its limited chemical reactivity, lignin is currently processed as a low value by-product in pulp and paper mills. Therefore, valorization of lignin holds great potential as this would provide a readily available source of aromatic compounds for various industrial applications. In this study, indulin AT biodegradation was assessed by comparing the effects of basidiomycetous fungi (Coriolus versicolor and Trametes gallica) and actinobacteria (Mycobacterium sp. and Streptomyces sp.) to those of two commercial laccases, those from T. versicolor (≥ 10 U/mg) and C. versicolor (≥ …

Hommage Á Trois: A Tale Of Some Very Hungry Grammia Spp. Caterpillars, Katherine Hernandez
Theses and Dissertations
Larvae of the Arctiinae use an impressive arsenal of defenses to protect themselves against natural enemies. Several species within this subfamily have been studied for their defensive capabilities, specifically the use of plant secondary metabolites. Life history and sequestration patterns of secondary metabolites have been well documented for Grammia incorrupta; however, little information exists for other species of Grammia. Furthermore, information on sequestration patterns during the immature stages of several Grammia spp. is largely unknown. To address these gaps in knowledge, I am conducting a comparative study of the chemical ecology and life history traits for the virgin tiger moth …

Paying But Half Heed To My Father And His World: Daughters And Fathers In Postcolonial Texts Of South Africa And Ireland, Jody Lee Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation reads novels from South Africa and Ireland by noted writers like Nadine Gordimer and William Trevor, in order to examine how the peripheral and underanalyzed literary daughter has been increasingly used as a symbol of the developing postcolonial state. This reading focuses especially on the daughter-father dyad and how through this relationship the daughter reconfigures herself as what Kwame Anthony Appiah has elsewhere called "a partial cosmopolitan" - that is, a individual connected to both the local environment and to the larger global culture. This dual connection that I trace is established in a range of ways throughout …
