Despite promising advantages such as low cost and portability of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), it has yet to be widely implemented outside of basic research. Specifically, fNIRS has yet to be proven as a standalone tool within a clinical setting. The objective of this study was to assess hemodynamic concentration changes at the primary and premotor motor cortices as a result of simple whole-hand grasping and sequential finger-opposition (tapping) tasks. These tasks were repeated over 3 days in a randomized manner. Ten healthy young adults (23.8 4.8 years) participated in the study. Quantitatively, no statistically significant differences were discovered between …

Analysis Of A Clinically Failed, Mechanically Intact, Hemi-Toe Implant, Swetha Varadharajan, Richard T. Laughlin, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

In this case study a clinically failed, mechanically intact, hemi-toe device was investigated. The clinical indication of the failure constitutes radiolucent line indicating loosening of the implant and possible interactions among the bone-implant initiated by osteolysis may become a factor, producing pain, inflammatory reactions, deformity and discomfort. The patient file was not available to determine these parameters. The device was titanium coated, Cobalt Chromium alloy used for making hemi-toe. Degeneration of hemi implant was due to spalling of the coating from the surface, causing loosening of stem from bone. However, pre-removal X-ray films were not available to confirm. Mechanism by …

Liver X receptor a (LXRa) plays a critical role in the maintenance of energy homeostasis within a cell through tight transcriptional regulation of genes involved in metabolism of lipids, glucose, and cholesterol. Although LXRa has been established to function as a heterodimer with the retinoid X receptor a (RXRa), recent studies have determined that LXRa also interacts directly with peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor a (PPARa). However, little is known regarding the functionality of this heterodimer, if any exists at all. This study determined that a heterodimer of PPARa and LXRa is capable of binding to candidate response elements in vitro with …

Abstract Quinton, Betty Tun-Huan. Ph.D., Engineering Ph.D. Program, Wright State University, 2016. Aligned Carbon Nanotube Carpets On Carbon Substrates for High Power Electronic Applications. One of the driving forces behind nanotechnology research is the miniaturization of electronic devices. Electrical and thermal transport properties of device materials at micrometer and nanometer scales become very important in such applications. Carbon materials, especially carbon nanotubes (CNTs), have exceptionally low density and superior electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Vertically aligned CNTs attached to lightweight carbon substrates may hold the key to fully use these outstanding properties. However, the majority of studies reported to date …

With the widespread adoption of dynamic web applications in recent years, a number of threats to the security of these applications have emerged as significant challenges for application developers. The security of developed applications has become a higher priority for both developers and their employers as cyber attacks become increasingly more prevalent and damaging. Some of the most used web application frameworks are written in PHP and have become major targets due to the large number of servers running these applications worldwide. A number of tools exist to evaluate PHP code for issues, however most of these applications are not …

Nearly 4 million neonates die every year due to brain injuries, most caused by hypoxia. Neonatal ICU requires newborns with critical health conditions to be monitored continuously calling for the need of a non-invasive, compact and portable device. However, commercial devices are mostly bulky and/or expensive. The neonatal mortality is higher in under-developed countries, where such expensive and large devices are not affordable. Hence, my thesis focuses on building first generation compact, inexpensive, and wireless device that can monitor and provide feedback to clinicians during intervention. This approach is based on light absorption by oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin chromophores. The total …

Chronic wounds have become a major clinical and economic burden in our society. New approaches that accelerate wound healing are desperately needed. Angiogenesis and vascularization play a critical role in healing. One of the essential angiogenic factors that promote the formation of vascular beds is vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Moreover, adipose-derived stem cells (ASC), through their regeneration and differentiation properties, may promote healing when transplanted into a wound bed. I have proposed to develop a novel organotypic wound model to facilitate the study of wound healing process. I hypothesize that administration of genetically-modified ASC secreting VEGF via an adeno-associated …

Aspects That Affect Whole Number Learning: Cultural Artefacts And Mathematical Tasks, Veronica Sarungi Jan 2016

Aspects That Affect Whole Number Learning: Cultural Artefacts And Mathematical Tasks, Veronica Sarungi

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

In this chapter, discussion of key socio-cultural aspects that affect learning will be considered from two complementary perspectives:

• Aspects that may help learning, especially if adequately exploited by the teacher. • Aspects that may hinder learning, especially if not adequately contrasted by the teacher.

Thirteen papers written by authors from ten countries were accepted for Theme 3. For presentation and discussion, the papers accepted for Theme 3 were divided into subgroups according to their main focus. We are aware that it is not possible to make distinct groups of papers as there are several overlaps in the classification, but …

Though Ultraviolet B radiation (290-320 nm; UVB) exerts profound systemic effects, it is absorbed only in the epidermis. One important question in photobiology is how UVB signals are emanated from the epidermis. Microvesicle particles (MVP) are small (200-1000nm diameter) membrane-bound vesicles released by numerous cell types and can be found in the circulation. MVP can contain both nuclear and cytoplasmic components and are thought to provide a mechanism by which cells transmit signals systemically. Though various stressors have been demonstrated to generate MVP, the ability of UVB to exert this effect has not been demonstrated. Previous studies from ours and …

Pharmacology and Toxicology Faculty Publications

Exosomes (EXs) are cell-derived vesicles that mediate cell-cell communication and could serve as biomarkers. Here we described novel methods for purification and phenotyping of EXs released from endothelial cells (ECs) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) by combining microbeads and fluorescence quantum dots (Q-dots®) techniques. EXs from the culture medium of ECs and EPCs were isolated and detected with cell-specific antibody conjugated microbeads and second antibody conjugated Q-dots by using nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) system. The sensitivities of the cell origin markers for ECs (CD105, CD144) and EPCs (CD34, KDR) were evaluated. The sensitivity and specificity were determined by using positive …

Radiotherapy (RT) remains a standard therapeutic modality for breast cancer patients. However, intrinsic or acquired resistance limits the efficacy of RT. Here, we demonstrate that CHK1 inhibitor AZD7762 alone significantly inhibited the growth of radioresistant breast cancer cells (RBCC). Given the critical role of ATR/CHK1 signaling in suppressing oncogene-induced replication stress (RS), we hypothesize that CHK1 inhibition leads to the specific killing for RBCC due to its abrogation in the suppression of RS induced by oncogenes. In agreement, the expression of oncogenes c-Myc/CDC25A/c-Src/H-ras/E2F1 and DNA damage response (DDR) proteins ATR/CHK1/BRCA1/CtIP were elevated in RBCC. AZD7762 exposure led to significantly higher …

The Gas-Phase Oxidation Of Cationic Bioanalytes Via Ion/Ion Reactions, Alice Lindsay Pilo Jan 2016

The Gas-Phase Oxidation Of Cationic Bioanalytes Via Ion/Ion Reactions, Alice Lindsay Pilo

Open Access Dissertations

Several solution-phase derivatizations have recently been implemented in the gas-phase through the interaction between oppositely charged ions, viz., ion/ion reactions. The work presented here primarily focuses on the oxidation of bioanalytes via ion/ion reactions with periodate and persulfate anions. Methionine and tryptophan residues in simple polypeptides are selectively oxidized upon ion/ion reactions with periodate anion. The oxidative labeling of disulfide bonds is performed via ion/ion reactions and is used to identify intermolecularly disulfide-linked peptides and further probe their primary structure. Non-modified, non-disulfide linked peptides lacking easily oxidized residues (i.e., methionine and tryptophan) can also undergo oxidation. Peptides containing neutral basic …

Discovery And Functional Analyses Of Hessian Fly Effector-Encoding Genes, Lucio Navarro Escalante Jan 2016

Discovery And Functional Analyses Of Hessian Fly Effector-Encoding Genes, Lucio Navarro Escalante

Open Access Dissertations

The Hessian fly - wheat system is a well-known model of gene-for-gene interac- tion between host plants and parasitic insects. The Hessian fly uses secreted effector proteins to control susceptible host plant physiology, transforming the plant cells in a nutritive tissue to support the developing insect larva. HF-resistant wheat cultivars employ resistance (R) proteins to perceive the insect avirulence effectors (Avr) and display defensive immune responses. This study is focused in the discovery and functional analyses of insect effector-encoding genes. Chapter one of this thesis offers an introduction about the molecular basis of HF-wheat interactions. In Chapter two, I present …

Role Of Deltac And Deltad In Zebrafish Retinal Development, Sylvia Imelda Bonilla Jan 2016

Role Of Deltac And Deltad In Zebrafish Retinal Development, Sylvia Imelda Bonilla

Open Access Dissertations

Classical studies have shown that Notch-Delta signaling is essential for the maintenance of retinal progenitor cells. However, the specific roles of different Delta ligands on retinal development are not well characterized. The focus of this study was to investigate the specific functions of the Delta ligands, deltaC (Dlc) and deltaD (Dld), in zebrafish retinal development by using dlcb663 and dldtg249 mutant embryos. The retinal expression pattern of dlc and dld, determined by whole-mount in situ hybridization, demonstrated that both ligands have similar and distinct expression patterns in WT retinas throughout retinal development. In mutant retinas where dlc and dld are …

Emerging Technologies To Measure Neighborhood Conditions In Public Health: Implications For Interventions And Next Steps, M. Schootman, E. J. Nelson, K. Werner, E. Shacham, M. Elliott, Kendra Ratnapradipa, M. Lian, A. Mcvay

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

Adverse neighborhood conditions play an important role beyond individual characteristics. There is increasing interest in identifying specific characteristics of the social and built environments adversely affecting health outcomes. Most research has assessed aspects of such exposures via self-reported instruments or census data. Potential threats in the local environment may be subject to short-term changes that can only be measured with more nimble technology. The advent of new technologies may offer new opportunities to obtain geospatial data about neighborhoods that may circumvent the limitations of traditional data sources. This overview describes the utility, validity and reliability of selected emerging technologies to …

The Israelite Roots Of Atonement Terminology, T. Benjamin Spackman Jan 2016

The Israelite Roots Of Atonement Terminology, T. Benjamin Spackman

BYU Studies

When Latter-day Saints speak of atonement, they use vocabulary drawn from the scriptures, including common verbs like atone, save, and redeem, and the corresponding nouns atonement, savior, salvation, redeemer, and redemption. There are other, perhaps more vivid, words for salvific acts, such as the Book of Mormon references to being “snatched” (Mosiah 27:28–29; Alma 26:17).1 Such rare terms in scripture have not found place in LDS discourse, which tends to use the most common terms related to atonement interchangeably. While they are indeed at some level synonymous, their distinctive meanings gesture toward …
