The Use Of Song To Open An Educational Development Workshop: Exploratory Analysis And Reflections, Lawrence Lesser, Song An, Daniel Tillman
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Song has been used by faculty of many disciplines in their classrooms and, to a lesser extent, by educational developers in workshops. This paper shares and discusses a new song (about an instructor’s evolving openness to alternatives to lecture only teaching) and its novel use to open an educational development workshop. Self reported participant data from an exploratory survey suggest that the song was most effective in reducing stress as well as in increasing motivation, morale, engagement, and connection. Practical implications and implementation considerations are discussed regarding the song as well as related creative work.

The Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Religiosity: Factors That Influence Transprejudice, Katherine M. Lindner
The Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Religiosity: Factors That Influence Transprejudice, Katherine M. Lindner
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Trans people are people who do not conform to traditional gender roles due to presenting themselves as a gender not assigned from birth. Transprejudice refers to negative attitudes toward trans people. The intersectionality perspective proposes that individuals have multiple identities (such as sexual orientation, gender, and race) that influence the amount of power society gives them (Worthen, 2013). Attitudes toward hypothetical trans persons were examined in a sample of 713 undergraduates. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions where trans person gender and race were manipulated. After reading a vignette, participants were asked to evaluate the character on …

The Reinforcement And Healing Of Asphalt Mastic Mixtures By Rejuvenator Encapsulation In Alginate Compartmented Fibres, Amir Tabakovic, W. Post, D. Cantero, Oguzhan Copuroglu, S. J. Garcia, E. Schlangen
Research and Innovation - Articles
This paper explores the potential use of compartmented alginate fibres as a new method of incorporating rejuvenators into asphalt pavement mixtures. The compartmented fibres are employed to locally distribute the rejuvenator and to overcome the problems associated with spherical capsules and hollow fibres. The work presents proof of concept of the encapsulation process which involved embedding the fibres into the asphalt mastic mixture and the survival rate of fibres in the asphalt mixture. To prove the effectiveness of the alginate as a rejuvenator encapsulating material and to demonstrate its ability survive asphalt production process, the fibres containing the rejuvenator were …
Compelled Commercial Speech And The Consumer “Right To Know”, Jonathan H. Adler
Compelled Commercial Speech And The Consumer “Right To Know”, Jonathan H. Adler
Faculty Publications
Compelled commercial speech, including mandatory labeling and the disclosure of factually true information, should not be seen as a separate category of speech under the First Amendment. Rather, compelled commercial speech should be subject to the same level of protection as commercial speech generally. This means commercial speech compulsions, such as mandatory disclosures and labeling requirements, must be supported by a substantial government interest. The assertion of a consumer “right to know” does not constitute such an interest and cannot, by itself, justify compelled commercial speech. Allowing such a justification for compelled commercial speech would eviscerate any meaningful First Amendment …
Stewarding Our Mountains: A Program Evaluation Of Place-Based Service Learning On The Appalachian Trail, Bonnie Jean Harvey
Stewarding Our Mountains: A Program Evaluation Of Place-Based Service Learning On The Appalachian Trail, Bonnie Jean Harvey
Anthropology Theses
Appalachians’ relationships with the environment alter over time due to political, economic, and ecological factors. These changing relationships, for instance rural agrarian livelihoods shifting to urban contexts, can influence how an individual perceives personal responsibility in regional environmental stewardship, such as caring for and preserving local ecology. Observing that recent shifts resulted in less perceived youth stewardship for the Appalachian Trail (AT), the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) created the Trail to Every Classroom (TTEC) program in 2006. The TTEC program attempts to foster stewardship through the practice of place-based service learning - a diversification of education where youth learn through …

Jesusmania!: The Bootleg Superstar Of Gettysburg College, Devin Mckinney
Jesusmania!: The Bootleg Superstar Of Gettysburg College, Devin Mckinney
Gettysburg College Faculty Books
In 1971, an illegal performance of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar was staged at Gettysburg College. It was the spontaneous project of students, professors and a renegade seminarian. Performance rights were being negotiated, when suddenly legal action was threatened against any group staging the work before its Broadway premiere. The cast and crew put the show on anyway, and many hundreds attended. But the outlaw production drew the college administration and the Lutheran church into controversy. Drawing from original documents, recordings, and interviews with the cast, this book tells the behind-the-scenes story of the production.

Acoustic Emission Of Lactococcus Lactis Ssp. Lactis C2 Infected With Three Bacteriophages C2, Sk1 And Ml3, Luxi Meng
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
The objective of this research was to monitor the Acoustic Emission (AE) produced by Lactococcus lactis ssp. lactis C2 infected with three bacteriophages (c2, sk1 and ml3 at 90 min) using an acoustic emission-monitoring device which was designed at University of Kentucky in Lexington KY. The acoustic emission data was collected and then analyzed. These Acoustic Emission (AE) data suggested that bacteriophage ml3, sk1 and c2 can easily be distinguished by the differences in Absolute Energy (ABE), Centroid Frequency (CF) and Peak Frequency (PF) signals. The AE data suggested that bacteriophage sk1 and c2 caused greater stress on the lactis …
The Grass Is Not Always Greener: Congressional Dysfunction, Executive Action, And Climate Change In Comparative Perspective, Hari Osofsky, Jacqueline Peel
The Grass Is Not Always Greener: Congressional Dysfunction, Executive Action, And Climate Change In Comparative Perspective, Hari Osofsky, Jacqueline Peel
Articles
Partisan climate change politics, paired with a legislative branch that is often deeply divided between two parties, has led to congressional gridlock in the United States. Numerous efforts at passing comprehensive climate change legislation have failed, and little prospect exists for such legislation in the foreseeable future. As a result, executive action under existing federal environmental statutes--often in interaction with litigation--has become the primary mechanism for national-level regulation of greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles and power plants. Although many observers critique this state of affairs and wish for a legislature more able to act. this essay argues that more …
Three-Dimensional Endothelial Spheroid-Based Investigation Of Pressure-Sensitive Sprout Formation, Min Song
Three-Dimensional Endothelial Spheroid-Based Investigation Of Pressure-Sensitive Sprout Formation, Min Song
Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering
This study explored hydrostatic pressure as a mechanobiological parameter to control in vitro endothelial cell tubulogenesis in 3-D hydrogels as a model microvascular tissue engineering approach. For this purpose, the present investigation used an endothelial spheroid model, which we believe is an adaptable microvascularization strategy for many tissue engineering construct designs. We also aimed to identify the operating magnitudes and exposure times for hydrostatic pressure-sensitive sprout formation as well as verify the involvement of VEGFR-3 signaling. For this purpose, we used a custom-designed pressure system and a 3-D endothelial cell spheroid model of sprouting tubulogenesis. We report that an exposure …

The Spruce Budworm And Forest: A Qualitative Comparison Of Ode And Boolean Models, Raina Robeva, David Murrugarra
The Spruce Budworm And Forest: A Qualitative Comparison Of Ode And Boolean Models, Raina Robeva, David Murrugarra
Mathematics Faculty Publications
Boolean and polynomial models of biological systems have emerged recently as viable companions to differential equations models. It is not immediately clear however whether such models are capable of capturing the multi-stable behaviour of certain biological systems: this behaviour is often sensitive to changes in the values of the model parameters, while Boolean and polynomial models are qualitative in nature. In the past few years, Boolean models of gene regulatory systems have been shown to capture multi-stability at the molecular level, confirming that such models can be used to obtain information about the system’s qualitative dynamics when precise information regarding …

Understanding Validity In Empirical Legal Research: The Case For Methodological Pluralism In Assessing The Impact Of Science In Court, Teneille R. Brown, James Tabery, Lisa G. Aspinwall
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
What makes a study valid or invalid? In 2013, the Hastings Law Journal published a law review article by law professor Deborah Denno entitled What Real-World Cases Tell Us About Genetic Evidence. This article questioned the validity of an article that we published in Science: The Double Edged-Sword: Does Biomechanism Increase or Decrease Judges’ Sentencing of Psychopaths? Denno’s trenchant critique focused on our use of experimental, rather than archival, methodology, and revealed a misunderstanding of the diverse goals of empirical legal research. One study, which in our case investigated the impact of biological explanations of criminal behavior on sentencing, is …

Cross Generational Immigrant Attitudes Toward Mental Health Services, Liudmila Shapoval, Elizabeth L. Jeglic
Cross Generational Immigrant Attitudes Toward Mental Health Services, Liudmila Shapoval, Elizabeth L. Jeglic
Modern Psychological Studies
Depression is a major mental health problem both in the United States and globally, and thus, increasing research has focused on how to treat it. The major treatments include medication and psychotherapy; however, it appears that most depressed individuals are selecting pharmacological treatment as opposed to psychological treatment despite treatments similar outcomes. This is in contract to survey data which suggests that individuals overall prefer psychological types of treatment (Givens et al., 2007; Olfson & Marcus, 2009). As the population of the United States increases to become more ethnically and cultural diverse, little is known about how racial and cultural …
