The Cuba-Florida Plant-Pest Pathway, Cory Penca, Damian C. Adams, Jiri Hulcr
Insecta Mundi
Recent shifts in US policies towards Cuba suggest a relaxation or lifting of the embargo may occur in the
near future. With the prospects of open travel and trade with Cuba come concerns over the introduction of agricultural
pests. In an effort to assess these concerns the distribution-based introduction risk of pests listed in the 2015 Cooperative
Agricultural Pest Survey’s (CAPS) list of priority pests of economic and environmental importance is reviewed. Of
the 59 pests on the CAPS priority pest list, 20 have been recorded in the literature as being present in the Caribbean
Basin, South America and Central …

An Integrative Neurological Model For Basic Observable Human Behavior, Ryan M. Francis
An Integrative Neurological Model For Basic Observable Human Behavior, Ryan M. Francis
Calvert Undergraduate Research Awards
The scientific method uncovers information from the natural world in small increments. This spurs the design of models to explain how the pieces fit together and to identify future targets of research. This is especially the case in psychology, where visualizing concepts is an advantageous practice. One all too common criticism of cognitive and behavioral models in psychology is the lack of a biological basis. This paper aims to alleviate part of this issue by integrating currently understood biological and neurological mechanisms that drive psychological phenomena into a predictive and descriptive model for basic human behavior. To accomplish this task, …

Cells alter their gene expression in response to exposure to various environmental changes. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation are believed to regulate the alterations in gene expression patterns. In vitro and in vivo studies have documented changes in cellular proliferation, cytoskeletal remodeling, signal transduction, bone mineralization and immune deficiency under the influence of microgravity conditions experienced in space. However microgravity induced changes in the epigenome have not been well characterized. In this study we have used Next-generation Sequencing (NGS) to profile ground-based “simulated” microgravity induced changes on DNA methylation (5-methylcytosine or 5mC), hydroxymethylation (5-hydroxymethylcytosine or 5hmC), and simultaneous gene …
Limited Trabecular Bone Density Heterogeneity In The Human Skeleton, Habiba Chirchir Phd
Limited Trabecular Bone Density Heterogeneity In The Human Skeleton, Habiba Chirchir Phd
Biological Sciences Faculty Research
There is evidence for variation in trabecular bone density and volume within an individual skeleton, albeit in a few anatomical sites, which is partly dependent on mechanical loading. However, little is known regarding the basic variation in trabecular bone density throughout the skeleton in healthy human adults. This is because research on bone density has been confined to a few skeletal elements, which can be readily measured using available imaging technology particularly in clinical settings. This study comprehensively investigates the distribution of trabecular bone density within the human skeleton in nine skeletal sites (femur, proximal and distal tibia, third metatarsal, …
Quality Of Caregiving Representations Among Pregnant Mothers Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence, Kristina Borneman
Quality Of Caregiving Representations Among Pregnant Mothers Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence, Kristina Borneman
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
During pregnancy women typically reorganize their mental representations of themselves and others to make room for the internal representation of their new child and themselves as caregivers. Representations during this transformational period have been shown to predict postnatal caregiving behavior. The purpose of this study is to assess the influence of physical and psychological intimate partner violence on maternal prenatal representations, namely, through a qualitative analysis of maternal narratives from the Working Model of the Child Interview (Zeanah & Beniot 1995), a well-established, semi-structured clinical tool. Four predominant themes emerged: helplessness, caregiving abdication, rigid attitudes and beliefs about gender roles, …
Coaggregation Of Gut Bacteroides & Parabacteroides With Probiotic Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Gg, Samuel Schotten
Coaggregation Of Gut Bacteroides & Parabacteroides With Probiotic Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Gg, Samuel Schotten
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Coaggregation has been indicated as a key mechanism in the formation of biofilms. This research sought to characterize the interactions occurring between native gastrointestinal Bacteroides & Parabacteroides and the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) cultured in Todd Hewitt (TH), deMan, Rogosa, and Sharpe (MRS), and Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) using in vitro coaggregation assays. In the coaggregation survey of interactions, a trend of growth medium-dependent coaggregation variability was displayed with LGG grown in TH displaying the widest spectrum of coaggregation with Bacteroides/Parabacteroides strains and narrower spectrum from the other cultures of LGG. By protease inhibition, it was confirmed that …
The Interaction Between Body Image, Eating Attitudes, And The Use Of Social Media Platforms, Alexis Wells
The Interaction Between Body Image, Eating Attitudes, And The Use Of Social Media Platforms, Alexis Wells
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
It has been established that the media (such as television, magazines, etc.) can have a significant effect on body image and eating behaviors, but very few studies have examined the interactions between body image, eating behaviors, and social media. Where media is largely visual, in that material is presented to the viewers for consumption without conscious interaction, social media is almost entirely based upon interactions between the users and the accounts or "friends" they follow. We hypothesized that gender and the specific social media platforms used would be the most significant variables in relation to disordered eating and a low …

Efficacy Of Sexual Education Programs For Adolescents In The United States, Erica Szkody
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Millions of dollars are poured into teen sexual education in the United States each year; yet the United States is still ranked number one for teenage pregnancies and has one of the top three sexually transmitted infection rates in the world. Programs that focus on adolescent sexual health, sexually transmitted infection prevention, and sexual abuse prevention will be evaluated through this literature review as well as state and federal legislative rulings on the topics.
Fluoroquinolones Vs. Dental Attrition In The Etiology Of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, Marissa Salvia
Fluoroquinolones Vs. Dental Attrition In The Etiology Of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, Marissa Salvia
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
This research focuses on the etiology of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD), specifically osteoarthritis (OA) of the jaw. The population samples studied include early medieval skeletal remains from Saleux, France (n=40) and a modem population samples reported from the studies conducted by Rando and Waldron (2012), Emodi-Perlman et al. (2012), and Yadav (2011 ). When studying the etiology of OA, this research looks at the role of fluoroquinolones and dental attrition as possible factors. Fluoroquinolones are anti-inflammatory drugs that can cause rupture in the Achilles tendon; dental attrition is the wear on teeth from tooth on tooth contact. Although there has …

The Relationships Between Parenting Factors And Parental Sensitivity To The Child's Depression, Sara Thompson
The Relationships Between Parenting Factors And Parental Sensitivity To The Child's Depression, Sara Thompson
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Parenting, and its effects on a child, has been an area of interest in psychology for many years. By studying parental attachment, parenting confidence, and other parenting aspects, we get a better understanding of how the parent-child relationship functions. This study will utilize children's self reports of their depression and the parents' reports of their child's depression, to examine parental attachment and parenting confidence and how those two factors relate to the parent's sensitivity to their child's depression. The results from this study have possible implications for how to better structure the child's home environment, how to help the child …

Enhanced Acoustic Transmission Into Dissipative Solid Materials Through The Use Of Inhomogeneous Plane Waves, D C. Woods, J S. Bolton, Jeffrey F. Rhoads
Purdue Energetics Research Center Articles
A number of applications, for instance ultrasonic imaging and nondestructive testing, involve the transmission of acoustic energy across fluid–solid interfaces into dissipative solids. However, such transmission is generally hindered by the large impedance mismatch at the interface. In order to address this problem, inhomogeneous plane waves were investigated in this work for the purpose of improving the acoustic energy transmission. To this end, under the assumption of linear hysteretic damping, models for fluid–structure interaction were developed that allow for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous incident waves. For low-loss solids, the results reveal that, at the Rayleigh angle, a unique value of …

Arab Castaways'/'French Escapees': Mobilities, Border Protection And White Australia, Karin Speedy
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
In 1901, the year of Australian Federation and the implementation of the White Australia Policy, a small boatload of suspicious, brown, Muslim men landed 'illegally' on the Far North Queensland coast. The reaction to their arrival on the part of locals and the authorities highlights the collision of ideologies in a space where established practices of Indigenous and non-white mobilities and openness to outsiders arriving by sea were being challenged by a new national framework that revolved around the policing of coastal borders and the restriction of movements. This article discusses the men's gendered identities and the ways in which …
Inhibition Of B Lymphopoiesis By Adipocytes And Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells, Domenick Kennedy
Inhibition Of B Lymphopoiesis By Adipocytes And Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cells, Domenick Kennedy
Dissertations
B lymphopoiesis declines with age in humans, mice, and rabbits. Impaired B lymphopoiesis correlates with increased fat in the bone marrow (BM), suggesting that adipocytes negatively regulate this process. In fact, adipocyte factors were found to inhibit B cell development in BM cultures.
Our goal was to understand the mechanism by which adipocytes inhibit B cell development. Through culturing mouse BM cells on OP9 stromal cells in the presence of adipocyte-conditioned medium (ACM), we found that adipocytes promote the accumulation of CD11b+Gr1+ myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). These cells were not simply bystanders, as we report for the first time that …
Regulation Of The Subunits Of Hypoxia Inducible Factors By Sprouty2 And Its Impact On Different Biological Processes, Kristin Caroline Hicks
Regulation Of The Subunits Of Hypoxia Inducible Factors By Sprouty2 And Its Impact On Different Biological Processes, Kristin Caroline Hicks
Dissertations
The hypoxia inducible factors (HIF1α, HIF2α, HIF1β) promote transcription of genes that regulate glycolysis and cell survival and growth. Sprouty2 (Spry2) is a modulator of receptor tyrosine kinase signaling and inhibits cell proliferation via different mechanisms. Because of the seemingly opposite actions of the HIF and Spry2 on cellular processes, we hypothesized that Spry2 decreases the protein levels of HIF1α, HIF2α and HIF1β by enhancing the proximity of the HIF subunit to an ubiquitin ligase capable of degrading the subunit. Focusing on HIF1α as a prototypical alpha subunit, in a variety of tumor derived cell lines, Spry2 decreases the protein …
Studies Into The Allosteric Regulation Of Adp-Glucose Pyrophosphorylases, Benjamin Luke Hill
Studies Into The Allosteric Regulation Of Adp-Glucose Pyrophosphorylases, Benjamin Luke Hill
Dissertations
The synthesis of glycogen in bacteria and starch in plants is allosterically controlled by the production of ADP-glucose by ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase. Using computational studies, site directed mutagenesis, and kinetic characterization, and protein crystallography we found a critical region for transmitting the allosteric signal in the Escherichia coli and A. tumefaciens ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase. Molecular dynamics simulations and structural comparisons with other ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylases provided information to hypothesize communication pathways that link allosteric and active sites, and this was tested by site-directed mutagenesis and kinetic characterization of the mutant enzymes. In addition, the application of x-ray crystallography enabled the pinpointing of the …
