Using The Plasma Free Amino Acid Dose Response Method To Determine Metabolizable Protein Concentrations Of Lysine And Methionine In Rumen Protected Supplements, Nancy Lee Whitehouse Jan 2016

Using The Plasma Free Amino Acid Dose Response Method To Determine Metabolizable Protein Concentrations Of Lysine And Methionine In Rumen Protected Supplements, Nancy Lee Whitehouse

Doctoral Dissertations

Balancing diets for lysine (Lys) and methionine (Met) in dairy rations is becoming a regular practice in today’s industry. In order to be able to use rumen-protected AA (RPAA) in those diets a method to assess the efficacy and bioavailability needs to be proposed. The objective of the following studies was to propose the acceptance of the plasma free AA dose-response technique as a standardized methodology for evaluating RPAA in lactating dairy cows. Thirteen dose-response Latin square studies using ruminally-cannulated multiparous Holstein cows were conducted. Regression analysis of the slopes against the difference between plasma Lys concentration of basal and …

Parentage Without Gender, Joanna L. Grossman Jan 2016

Parentage Without Gender, Joanna L. Grossman

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Dramatic changes in the family form over the last several decades have put increasing pressure on the parent-child relationship. This elevation of the parent-child relationship in law and policy means that parents have both greater rights and more onerous obligations than in a system that spreads responsibility for children more broadly. The question of what constitutes a legal parent-child relationship under American law has become increasingly important because of its primacy in the determination of rights and obligations, but also increasingly complex because of reproductive technology and changing patterns of childbearing. The complexity and lack of cohesion that characterizes modern …

Cobalt Use And Regulation In Horseracing: A Review, K. Brewer, G. Maylin, C. K. Fenger, Thomas Tobin

Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Cobalt, atomic weight 58.9, is a metallic element and environmental substance found in the animal in microgram quantities, predominantly as vitamin B12, but is also a component of at least one mammalian enzyme unassociated with B12. Cobalt is a required trace mineral and has long been administered as a dietary supplement to humans and animals. Cobalt deficiency outside of its requirement in vitamin B12 has not been reported in humans. The administration of cobalt salts was once standard treatment for anaemia in humans, owing to its ability to stimulate red blood cell synthesis. Elemental cobalt acts by stabilising hypoxia inducible …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Curcumin Polymer For Application In Radiation Induced Lung Damage, Mark C. Bailey Jan 2016

Synthesis And Characterization Of Curcumin Polymer For Application In Radiation Induced Lung Damage, Mark C. Bailey

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Radiotherapy is used as a primary treatment for many cancers, including lung cancer. Although radiotherapy has proven to be an effective cancer treatment, its use is heavily limited due to the peripheral toxicity to healthy tissue. In this work, the antioxidant, curcumin, was tested as a radioprotectant to reduce radiation damage to healthy cells. Curcumin has been limited in use due to its poor bioavailability. In order to avoid problems associated with free curcumin delivery, curcumin poly(beta-amino ester) (CPBAE) was synthesized.

The first study investigated the in vitro radioprotection effect of curcumin in HUVEC dosed with gamma radiation. Cells treated …

An Integrated Relational Model Of Substance Abuse Counseling In An Outpatient Setting, Christine Chasek

Counseling Faculty Publications

Historically, there has been a lack of formalized substance abuse counseling models in outpatient counseling settings beyond the 12-step model of treatment that honor the therapeutic relationship. An Integrated Relational Model of Substance Abuse Outpatient Counseling is proposed based on the therapeutic relationship and counseling for solutions. Person-centered therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused therapy are integrated into a proposed phased model to use in outpatient counseling. The structure and application of the model is described, including goals, objectives, and intervention tools for each phase of counseling that honors the power of the therapeutic relationship.

Enhancing Conservation Options: An Argument For Statutory Recognition Of Options To Purchase Conservation Easements (Opces), Federico Cheever, Jessica Owley

Articles

Land conservation transactions have been the most active component of the conservation movement in the United States for the past three decades. Conservation organizations have acquired property rights-mostly conservation easements-to protect roughly 40 million acres of land nationwide. However, climate change threatens this vast edifice. Climate change means that the resources that land conservation transactions were intended to protect may not persist on the land protected. Options to purchase conservation easements ("OPCEs") have long played a modest but important role in conservation law practice. In the world climate change is creating, with its substantial uncertainties and shifting windows of opportunity, …

The banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus is an important and serious insect pest in most banana and plantain-growing areas of the world. In spite of the economic importance of this insect pest very little genomic and transcriptomic information exists for this species. In the present study, we characterized the midgut transcriptome of C. sordidus using massive 454-pyrosequencing. We generated over 590,000 sequencing reads that assembled into 30,840 contigs with more than 400 bp, representing a significant expansion of existing sequences available for this insect pest. Among them, 16,427 contigs contained one or more GO terms. In addition, 15,263 contigs were assigned …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The western corn rootworm (WCR), Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, is the most important pest of corn in the US Corn Belt. Economic estimates indicate that costs of control and yield loss associated with WCR damage exceed $US 1 billion annually. Historically, corn rootworm management has been extremely difficult because of its ability to evolve resistance to both chemical insecticides and cultural control practices. Since 2003, the only novel commercialized developments in rootworm management have been transgenic plants expressing Bt insecticidal proteins. Four transgenic insecticidal proteins are currently registered for rootworm management, and field resistance to proteins from the Cry3 family …

Effects Of Sepsis Protocols On Health Outcomes Of Adult Patients With Sepsis, Monika U. Mróz Jan 2016

Effects Of Sepsis Protocols On Health Outcomes Of Adult Patients With Sepsis, Monika U. Mróz

Theses and Dissertations

Sepsis is a condition that arises from the host’s own exaggerated response to an infection, directed towards pathogens, but causing multiple organ failure. Sepsis is one of the most common causes of death, and a considerable absorber of healthcare resources. This frequently fatal condition, despite progress in technology and improving knowledge of pathophysiology, is still poorly understood, carries high mortality and morbidity rates, and survivors are often left with permanent disabilities and poor health outcomes.

Initial presentation of sepsis is often nonspecific, making diagnosis difficult, and causing lifesaving treatment delays. Sepsis guidelines are derived from emerging evidence-based research. While there …

Agonistic Behavior And Costs Of Aggression In Decapod Crustaceans, Niels-Viggo Schou Hobbs Jan 2016

Agonistic Behavior And Costs Of Aggression In Decapod Crustaceans, Niels-Viggo Schou Hobbs

Open Access Dissertations

Animals that engage in aggressive behavior necessarily incur some costs (e.g., energy expenditure) and risk much greater costs (e.g., injury), both of which are presumably weighed against the potential benefits (e.g., refuge, food, or mates). Such costs and benefits directly impact their distribution, life history, and fitness, so an understanding of the role aggression plays is crucial to a complete understanding of a species’ ecological niche. The research presented here evaluates the degree to which aggression has ecological and life history consequences, using several species of co-occurring crabs as models in a combination of laboratory and field experiments. Specifically, we …

Research Into Computer Hardware Acceleration Of Data Reduction And Svms, Jason Kane Jan 2016

Research Into Computer Hardware Acceleration Of Data Reduction And Svms, Jason Kane

Open Access Dissertations

Yearly increases in computer performance have diminished as of late, mostly due to the inability of transistors, the building blocks of computers, to deliver the same rate of performance seen in the 1980’s and 90’s. Shifting away from traditional CPU design, accelerator architectures have been shown to offer a potentially untapped solution. These architectures implement unique, custom hardware to increase the speed of certain tasking, such as graphics processing. The studies undertaken for this dissertation examine the ability of unique accelerator hardware to provide improved power and speed performance over traditional means, with an emphasis on classification tasking.

We evaluated the survival, number of copulations, fecundity and fertility of the adult females. The survival of females from these different pupal sizes did not differ statistically, but the survival of males from large pupae was statistically shorter than from small pupae. …

Millenial Feminisms: How The Newest Generation Of Lawyers May Change The Conversation About Gender Equality In The Workplace, Meghan M. Boone Jan 2016

Millenial Feminisms: How The Newest Generation Of Lawyers May Change The Conversation About Gender Equality In The Workplace, Meghan M. Boone

University of Baltimore Law Review

Much has been written about the "Millennial generation" and how they are re-shaping the modem workplace, including the legal profession. This body of literature ranges from heralding the Millennial generation as the vanguard for a new age of optimistic, creative team-players, to decrying Millennials as technology-obsessed, entitled, and lazy. Because Millennials have only recently begun to enter the legal profession en masse, the question of how Millennials will change the modem legal profession is still an open one-although one that has already attracted considerable attention. Less attention, however, has been paid to how Millennials unique approach to their professional lives …

The Matthew Shepard And James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act: A Criminal Perspective, Meredith Boram Jan 2016

The Matthew Shepard And James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act: A Criminal Perspective, Meredith Boram

University of Baltimore Law Review

[H]ate crimes ... leave deep scars not only on the victims, but on our larger community. They weaken the sense that we are one people with common values and a common future. They tear us apart when we should be moving closer together. They are acts of violence against America itself.. . As part of our preparation for the new century, it is time for us to mount an all-out assault on hate crimes, to punish them swiftly and severely, and to do more to prevent them from happening in the first place. We must begin with a deeper understanding …

Column: From Plato To Ebola?: Introducing World History In A First Year Seminars On Epidemics, Carol Summers

History Faculty Publications

How can world historians take advantage of interdisciplinary general education requirements to introduce new students to the methods and uses of history? When survey courses are not institutionalized, specialized courses that draw on individual faculty members’ expertise and fit into general education curricular niches may be the best option. This essay describes my efforts in a First Year Seminar on Epidemics and Empires to teach a broader range of students to how world historical approaches and methods both introduce them to a bigger, more complicated world, and provide tools to understand it.

Performance Of Sanitary Sewer Collection System Odour Control Devices Operating In Diverse Conditions, Mary Kay Camarillo, William T. Stringfellow, J. S. Hanlon, Elizabeth Basha Jan 2016

Performance Of Sanitary Sewer Collection System Odour Control Devices Operating In Diverse Conditions, Mary Kay Camarillo, William T. Stringfellow, J. S. Hanlon, Elizabeth Basha

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

Controlling odours from sanitary sewer systems is challenging as a result of the expansive nature of these systems. Addition of oxidizing chemicals is often practiced as a mitigation strategy. One alternative is to remove odorous compounds in the gases vented from manholes using adsorptive media. In this study, odour control devices located at manholes were observed to determine the ability of these systems to reduce hydrogen sulphide from vented gases. The odour control devices incorporated pressure regulation to control gas flow out of manhole covers and adsorptive media to remove hydrogen sulphide in the vented gases prior to release. Pressure …

Treatment Of Oil-Water Emulsion From The Machinery Industry By Fenton’S Reagent, Mary Kay Camarillo, William T. Stringfellow, C. Feng, H. Sun, S. Li

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

An oil–water emulsion from the machinery industry was treated using Fenton's reagent. The objective was to reduce the high chemical oxygen demand (COD) of this waste stream so that it would meet the COD effluent limit of Chinese Standard JS-7740-95. The optimal [H2O2]/[Fe2+] ratio for COD removal was 3. An orthogonal experimental design was developed based on the optimal [H2O2]/[Fe2+] ratio to evaluate the significance of four parameters relevant to the treatment process, namely, H2O2 dosage, initial pH, oxidation time and coagulation pH. The influence of the four parameters on COD removal efficiency decreased as follows: H2O2 dosage > oxidation time …

The Female Human Trafficker In The Criminal Justice System: A Test Of The Chivalry Hypothesis, Brielle Francis Jan 2016

The Female Human Trafficker In The Criminal Justice System: A Test Of The Chivalry Hypothesis, Brielle Francis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The involvement of women in human trafficking within the United States has received limited research attention. Human trafficking encompasses labor, sex, and organ trafficking (Roberts, 2012). In 2009 the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reported that women play a significant role in human trafficking. Nagel and Johnson (1994) conclude that, historically, female offenders have stayed at the edge of the criminal justice system. Generally, theories about prosecution and conviction outcomes derive from the study of male offenders. Women can be involved in all aspects of the human trafficking organizations, from the recruitment, to the supervision of prostitutes …

Physiotherapy For Pain And Disability In Adults With Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (Crps) Types I And Ii (Review), K. M. Smart, Benedict Wand, N. E. O'Connell

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Background: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a painful and disabling condition that usually manifests in response to trauma or surgery. When it occurs, it is associated with significant pain and disability. It is thought to arise and persist as a consequence of a maladaptive pro-inflammatory response and disturbances in sympathetically-mediated vasomotor control, together with maladaptive peripheral and central neuronal plasticity. CRPS can be classified into two types: type I (CRPS I) in which a specific nerve lesion has not been identified, and type II (CRPS II) where there is an identifiable nerve lesion. Guidelines recommend the inclusion of a …
