An Investigation Of Juvenile Alewife (Alosa Pseudoharengus) Habitat Use And Growth Using Natural Markers, Gregory Norman Labonte Ms

All Student Scholarship

This research attempts to connect patterns in growth and migration of an anadromous species. The goal of this research was to understand habitat movements and growth of juvenile alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) in the Penobscot Estuary and Bay through the use of otolith microchemistry, otolith growth increments, and a laboratory stable isotope turnover study. Understanding the connection between growth and movement of juvenile alewives may lead to more accurate and sophisticated conservation and restoration methods for anadromous species.

Medical Interns', Residents' And Attending Physicians' Attitudes Towards Integrative Medicine And Recommended Treatments For Patients With Psoriasis, Jennifer L. Pacyon Jan 2016

Medical Interns', Residents' And Attending Physicians' Attitudes Towards Integrative Medicine And Recommended Treatments For Patients With Psoriasis, Jennifer L. Pacyon

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Background: Psoriasis is a multifactorial disease that effect approximately 7.5 million Americans. There are a variety of traditional treatments for psoriasis (e.g. topical medications, biologics) that for many, are effective in combating the disease. However, traditional treatments often have aversive side effects and may not be appropriate for every patient (e.g. pregnant women). Additionally, the efficacy of these medications are variable leaving some looking for adjunctive treatment options. There is increasing evidence to support the use of adjunctive treatments for psoriatic patients (e.g. psychotherapy, mindfulness). However, research is variable in regards to medical professionals’ attitudes towards integrative medicine (IM) as …

Evaluation Of Light Attraction For The Stored-Product Psocid, Liposcelis Bostrychophila, John Diaz-Montano, James F. Campbell, Thomas W. Phillips, Lee W. Cohnstaedt, James E. Throne

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The psocid, Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel (Psocoptera: Liposcelididae), is the most widespread psocid pest of stored products. Because L. bostrychophila has developed resistance to several chemical insecticides, it is important to investigate other integrated pest management (IPM) approaches, and a critical part of IPM programs is an effective monitoring program, Monitoring tools for psocids are limited, and few studies have been conducted on monitoring of psocids, with none on the attraction of lights for psocids. Therefore, we studied the response of L. bostrychophila adults to eight wavelengths of light-emitting diodes (LED) in paired-choice pitfall test. Among the LEDs evaluated, the strongest …

Comparative Lipid Production By Oleaginous Yeasts In Hydrolyzates Of Lignocellulosic Biomass And Process Strategy For High Titers, Patricia J. Slininger, Bruce S. Dien, Cletus P. Kurtzman, Bryan R. Moser, Erica L. Bakota, Stephanie R. Thompson, Patrick J. O'Bryan, Michael A. Cotta, Venkatesh Balan, Mingjie Jin, Leonardo Da Costa Sousa, Bruce E. Dale

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Oleaginous yeasts can convert sugars to lipids with fatty acid profiles similar to those of vegetable oils, making them attractive for production of biodiesel. Lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive source of sugars for yeast lipid production because it is abundant, potentially low cost, and renewable. However, lignocellulosic hydrolyzates are laden with byproducts which inhibit microbial growth and metabolism. With the goal of identifying oleaginous yeast strains able to convert plant biomass to lipids, we screened 32 strains from the ARS Culture Collection, Peoria, IL to identify four robust strains able to produce high lipid concentrations from both acid and base-pretreated …

Lifetime Disadvantage, Susan Bisom-Rapp, Malcolm Sargeant Jan 2016

Lifetime Disadvantage, Susan Bisom-Rapp, Malcolm Sargeant

Faculty Scholarship

Lifetime Disadvantage, Discrimination and the Gendered Workforce fills a gap in the literature on discrimination and disadvantage suffered by women at work by focusing on the inadequacies of the current law and the need for a new holistic approach. Each stage of the working life cycle for women is examined with a critical consideration of how the law attempts to address the problems that inhibit women's labor force participation. By using their model of lifetime disadvantage, the authors show how the law adopts an incremental and disjointed approach to resolving the challenges, and argue that a more holistic orientation towards …

Food Labeling And Consumer Associations With Health, Safety, And Environment, Joanna K. Sax, Neal Doran Jan 2016

Food Labeling And Consumer Associations With Health, Safety, And Environment, Joanna K. Sax, Neal Doran

Faculty Scholarship

The food supply is complicated and consumers are increasingly calling for labeling on food to be more informative. In particular, consumers are asking for the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMO) food based on health, safety and environmental concerns. At issue is whether the labels that are sought would accurately provide the information desired. The present study examined consumer (n = 181) perceptions of health, safety and the environment for foods labeled organic, natural, fat free or low fat, GMO, or non-GMO. Findings indicated that respondents consistently believed that foods labeled GMO are less healthy, safe and environmentally-friendly compared to …

How Does The Structure Of A College Chemistry Examination Affect Pedagogy, Rajeev R. Pandey, John Mayberry, Jace Hargis Jan 2016

How Does The Structure Of A College Chemistry Examination Affect Pedagogy, Rajeev R. Pandey, John Mayberry, Jace Hargis

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

This study examines variations of assessment and connections to active learning methods, which may enhance both the accuracy of assessment, engagement and retention. Correlation data relating instruction and assessment in a multiple dimensions are presented. Multiple choice (MC) and free response (FR) exams were provided and students were also given the option to provide FR answers to the MC items. This study suggests there is little overall difference in mean or median student scores on the MC vs. FR portions of the exam, but that there is some evidence to believe that student scores on MC portions are more variable …

These measures were correlated with final course grades to increase understanding of the participation patterns of successful students. The resulting patterns and their implications are identified. We observe that students with an intermediate number of logins and average session length tended to exhibit the optimal …

Aids Activists, Fda Regulation, And The Amendment Of America's Drug Constitution, Lewis Grossman Jan 2016

Aids Activists, Fda Regulation, And The Amendment Of America's Drug Constitution, Lewis Grossman

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This Article explores how AIDS activists, desperate for access to potentially life-saving pharmaceuticals, permanently transformed America’s “drug constitution.” Their advocacy altered the FDA’s interpretation and application of the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) so as to expedite the availability of new, unproven drugs for critical illnesses, thus enhancing individual patients’ autonomy to make therapeutic choices without government interference. The FDCA is more than simple set of instructions to a federal agency — it is a source of vitally important and deeply entrenched institutional and normative frameworks. Like major civil rights, antitrust, and environmental statutes, the FDCA should be …

Minors, Parents, And Minor Parents, Maya Manian Jan 2016

Minors, Parents, And Minor Parents, Maya Manian

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

As numerous scholars have noted, the law takes a strikingly incoherent approach to adolescent reproduction. States overwhelmingly allow a teenage girl to independently consent to pregnancy care and medical treatment for her child, and even to give up her child for adoption, all without notice to her parents, but require parental notice or consent for abortion. This Article argues that this oft-noted contradiction in the law on teenage reproductive decision-making is in fact not as contradictory as it first appears. A closer look at the law’s apparently conflicting approaches to teenage abortion and teenage childbirth exposes common ground that scholars …

The Feminist Case For Acknowledging Women's Acts Of Violence, Jamie Abrams Jan 2016

The Feminist Case For Acknowledging Women's Acts Of Violence, Jamie Abrams

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This Article makes a feminist case for acknowledging women’s acts of violence as consistent with — not threatening to — the goals of the domestic violence movement and the feminist movement. It concludes that broadly understanding women’s use of strength, power, coercion, control, and violence, even illegitimate uses, can be framed consistent with feminist goals. Beginning this conversation is a necessary — if uncomfortable — step to give movement to the movement to end gendered violence.

The domestic violence movement historically framed its work on a gender binary of men as potential perpetrators and women as potential victims. This binary …

Vo-Ohpic Treatment Reduces Cardiac Remodeling In Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiomyopathy, Taylor Johnson Jan 2016

Vo-Ohpic Treatment Reduces Cardiac Remodeling In Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiomyopathy, Taylor Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Doxorubicin (Doxo) is one of multiple anthracycline drugs used to effectively treat various forms of cancer. Unfortunately, Doxo treatment, as a side effect, induces cardiomyopathy and subsequent heart failure. We have previously demonstrated that transplanted embryonic stem (ES) cells and their conditioned medium (CM) modulate the PTEN pathway and reduce apoptosis, fibrosis and hypertrophy in a Doxo induced cardiomyopathy (DIC) model. However, mechanisms of inhibited apoptosis mediated through PTEN pathway are completely unknown. Therefore, we used VO-OHpic (VO), a potent PTEN inhibitor to understand the mechanism of apoptosis as well as its effect on cardiac remodeling in DIC. Animals were …

The Role Of Type-I Interferon In Limiting Spread And Killing Of An Oncolytic Rna Virus In Prostate Cells, Kritika Kedarinath Jan 2016

The Role Of Type-I Interferon In Limiting Spread And Killing Of An Oncolytic Rna Virus In Prostate Cells, Kritika Kedarinath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prostate cancer is the second most prevalent cancer amongst men and there is an urgent need to address viable therapeutic options for its treatment. Development of viruses which target and kill cancer cells has gained momentum due to the first FDA approved oncolytic virus for treating human cancer patients. Our previous work with the RNA virus, Parainfluenza Virus 5 (PIV5), has led to the generation of mutants that are potential candidates for oncolytic viruses: 1) the hyperfusogenic (P/V/F) mutant has a mutated P/V and fusion gene which activates anti-viral responses and causes massive cell-cell fusion respectively, and 2) the Leader …

Unshackled: A Phenomenological Study Of The Effects Of Holistic Conflict Resolution Training On Inmate Self-Efficacy, Christina R. Wilson Jan 2016

Unshackled: A Phenomenological Study Of The Effects Of Holistic Conflict Resolution Training On Inmate Self-Efficacy, Christina R. Wilson

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

American prisons are overflowing with inmates exacting an incalculable human and moral cost on inmates, their families, and society. A central theme in criminality is the inability to deal with conflict and the affiliated emotions in an appropriate manner. Further, problem-solving, communication, and consequential thinking skills are lacking in the lives of many inmates due to lack of proper role models, lack of skills, and lack of expectations. Focusing on inmate education is one of the most effective forms of crime prevention according to leading criminological theorists. This phenomenological study was an assessment of a ten-session, holistic conflict resolution course …

That Infinite Sphere’: Paradox, Paralepsis, And Parody In Les Guérillères, Chase Gregory Jan 2016

That Infinite Sphere’: Paradox, Paralepsis, And Parody In Les Guérillères, Chase Gregory

Faculty Journal Articles

I begin this project in medias res, with a question that may seem somewhat auxiliary, but that nonetheless proved fundamental to my primary question: how do we define “shape?” More specifically, I feel that before I begin to answer my question, “What is the shape of Les guérillères?,” I need to know the difference between “shape” and “form,” a distinction made in class while discussing this question, and one that I still haven’t quite pinned down. A quick online search yielded both definitions. Shape, I learned, is “the external form or appearance characteristic of something”; form, on the other hand, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inflamed tissue in Crohn’s disease (CD) are continuously producing toxic oxygen metabolites leading to cellular injury and apoptosis. Here, we are evaluating the role of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) in oxidative stress in CD by evaluation of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense activity. Specifically, we measured malondialdehyde (MDA) level and selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in the plasma from patients and cattle infected with MAP. The level of MAP antibodies in bovine sera was determined by IDEXX kit whereas detection of MAP DNA was performed by IS900-based nPCR. A total of 42 cattle (21 infected with MAP and 21 …

Structural And Functional Characterization Of Enzymes Of A Novel Group Of Tryptophylquinone Cofactor Containing Oxidases, Esha Sehanobish Jan 2016

Structural And Functional Characterization Of Enzymes Of A Novel Group Of Tryptophylquinone Cofactor Containing Oxidases, Esha Sehanobish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Protein-derived cofactors are redox and catalytic centers that are generally formed by the posttranslational modifications of one or more amino acids. An important class of these cofactors are the quinones derived from tyrosine and tryptophan. Amongst redox proteins, it has been known till now that oxidases either contain a flavin or a tyrosylquinone cofactor, whereas tryptophylquinone ones are present within the dehydrogenases. In recent times, oxidases from a marine bacterium, Marinomonas mediterranea, have been shown to possess the latter. This study involves the characterization of two such proteins, lysine-?-oxidase (LodA) and glycine oxidase (GoxA). They have been reported to contain …

Probabilistic-Based Computing Transformation With Reconfigurable Logic Fabrics, Mohammed Alawad Jan 2016

Probabilistic-Based Computing Transformation With Reconfigurable Logic Fabrics, Mohammed Alawad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Effectively tackling the upcoming "zettabytes" data explosion requires a huge quantum leap in our computing power and energy efficiency. However, with the Moore's law dwindling quickly, the physical limits of CMOS technology make it almost intractable to achieve high energy efficiency if the traditional "deterministic and precise" computing model still dominates. Worse, the upcoming data explosion mostly comprises statistics gleaned from uncertain, imperfect real-world environment. As such, the traditional computing means of first-principle modeling or explicit statistical modeling will very likely be ineffective to achieve flexibility, autonomy, and human interaction. The bottom line is clear: given where we are headed, …
