Relationship Between Autonomous Motivation And Ego-Depletion, Mark A. Heilman
Relationship Between Autonomous Motivation And Ego-Depletion, Mark A. Heilman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Previous research has shown that exerting self-control on a demanding task can impair performance on a subsequent demanding self-control task. This phenomenon is known as ego-depletion; however, its underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Notable gaps in the literature exist regarding whether participants’ motivation levels can attenuate the depletion effect, and whether trait self-control is related. Drawing from the process model of depletion and the self-determination theory, the goal of the study was to examine whether motivational incentives in the form of autonomy can impact performance on tasks in an ego-depleted state, and the potential relationship of trait self-control. Perceptions Of Business School Students About Character Development And Ethical Reasoning, Larkey Mays Iii
Perceptions Of Business School Students About Character Development And Ethical Reasoning, Larkey Mays Iii
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Character development in higher education is essential for enhancing ethical awareness and moral reasoning. However, inconsistent perspectives exist concerning the impact of ethics education on students' ethical awareness and moral reasoning. This phenomenological study examined the perceptions of senior-level undergraduate business students on their own ethical belief systems and changes in ethical awareness. Astin's student development theory on the environmental effects on learning formed the conceptual framework. The research questions explored how the 4-year undergraduate business school experience changed the students' ability to recognize and evaluate ethical concerns in relation to the ethical aspects of coursework. Thirteen undergraduate seniors pursuing …
Perceptions Of Cameroonian Women Regarding Cervical Cancer Prevention, Anna Nkapsah Nji
Perceptions Of Cameroonian Women Regarding Cervical Cancer Prevention, Anna Nkapsah Nji
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Women in Cameroon as well as those residing in the Maryland-Washington Metropolitan area and the Diasporas suffer a disproportionate rate of cervical cancer morbidity and mortality due to the vast disproportion in the distribution of healthcare services. The widespread human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination holds promise for helping to attenuate the disproportion in cervical cancer screening and prevention services. Literature from other countries including Cameroon suggests that barriers to the uptake of cervical cancer screening include: culture, religion, the psychological impact of embarrassment, the influence of husbands, cost, discomfort, and vulnerability. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding …
A Qualitative Evaluation Of Leader-To-Millennial Relationship Development, Tywana Williams
A Qualitative Evaluation Of Leader-To-Millennial Relationship Development, Tywana Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Generational conflicts affect socialization practices needed for knowledge transfer and Millennial retention. Because of failed socialization practices, organizations will face significant losses in knowledge capital as Boomers retire and Millennials began to take active roles within the workplace. This interpretative phenomenological study explored Millennials' perceptions of leader-to-employee relationship development that may influence organizational learning and retention practices. Millennial retention is a primary concern in that knowledge acquired is a result of longevity and work experience. The leader-to-member exchange theory was used to navigate this qualitative inquiry. The reflexive approach was implemented to explore 20 Millennial participants' experiences with their managers. …

Factors Affecting Involvement Of Urban School District Parents In Their Child's Education, Megan Stewart
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Parental involvement in children's education has been found to have a positive impact on academic achievement. Because the state has mandated that academic achievement in the study district needs to increase, identifying means of increasing parental involvement is important. Guided by the work of Epstein, this quantitative study was conducted to explore demographic factors related to parents' involvement in the education of their children. Specifically, research questions examined differences in parental involvement by socioeconomic status (SES), barriers to involvement for parents, and school strategies to improve parental involvement. Parents of all 5th grade students (n = 935) from a large …
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Authenticity And Female Sexual Dysfunction, Ellen Kaye Smith
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Authenticity And Female Sexual Dysfunction, Ellen Kaye Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Since the late 1990s, researchers have reported a high degree of sexual dysfunction among American women that is associated with significant negative consequences (e.g., reduced quality of life and sexual satisfaction). In addition, sexual satisfaction is a primary factor in marital stability. Because of the widespread impact on both individual well-being and marital relationships, female sexual dysfunction is a significant public health problem. Most research has supported the predominance of psychocultural factors in women's sexual issues. Authenticity, defined by Kernis and Goldman as acting in accord with one's natural inclinations, is associated with increased well-being, but researchers have often overlooked …

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of 7 workers aged 55 and older regarding ageism through the theoretical framework of stereotype threat theory. Research questions focused on identifying age-related stereotypes held by the participants, the influence of those stereotypes on perceptions of aging, perception of the impact of aging on job …
Onsite Wastewarer Treatment Systems In A Changing Climate: Technology Robustness And Mechanisms, Jennifer Anne Cooper
Onsite Wastewarer Treatment Systems In A Changing Climate: Technology Robustness And Mechanisms, Jennifer Anne Cooper
Open Access Dissertations
Nearly 25% of U.S. households rely on onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS), or septic systems, to renovate wastewater before it is recharged to groundwater. These systems rely on soil processes as the final step in contaminant removal. Reliance on soil microbial, physical and chemical processes, which are sensitive to environmental perturbations (e.g. changes in pH, temperature, moisture, O2, presence of toxins), may result in variable wastewater treatment and release of contaminants to groundwater.
The extent of treatment in the soil treatment area (STA; also known as drainfield or leachfield) depends on the volume of unsaturated soil the wastewater …

Managing oxidative stress is an important physiological function for all aerobic organisms, particularly during periods of prolonged high metabolic activity, such as long-distance migration. However, no previous study has investigated the oxidative status of songbirds at different stages of migration, whether that oxidative status depends on the condition of the birds, how birds use their condition in concert with access to free water to make stopover decisions, or the effects of oxidative challenges like flight on subsequent reproduction. Additionally, scientists undertaking such research are commonly expected to disseminate their results as a Broader Impact of their studies - typically to …
A Study Of The Regulatory And Environmental Factors Affecting Trimethylamine Oxide Accumulation In Marine Organisms, Abigail Brittany Bockus
A Study Of The Regulatory And Environmental Factors Affecting Trimethylamine Oxide Accumulation In Marine Organisms, Abigail Brittany Bockus
Open Access Dissertations
Trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) was first described in marine organisms as an osmolyte, involved in the balance of water and solutes. After its discovery, it was found to be part of a subset of osmotic constituents termed counteracting solutes. These solutes exhibit stabilizing properties and can preserve protein functionality against biological and environmental perturbations. TMAO acts as a universal stabilizer, protecting macromolecular structure and function in response to numerous stressors, including urea destabilization, hydrostatic pressure, temperature and salinity. The studies presented in this dissertation address the regulatory and environmental factors affecting TMAO accumulation.
Both exogenous and endogenous sources are involved in …
