Copy Number Variation In Archival Melanoma Biopsies Versus Benign Melanocytic Lesions, Ahmed Mahas, Keerti Potluri, Michael N. Kent, Sameep Naik, Michael P. Markey

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Skin melanocytes can give rise to benign and malignant neoplasms. Discrimination of an early melanoma from an unusual/atypical benign nevus can represent a significant challenge. However, previous studies have shown that in contrast to benign nevi, melanoma demonstrates pervasive chromosomal aberrations. OBJECTIVE: This substantial difference between melanoma and benign nevi can be exploited to discriminate between melanoma and benign nevi. METHODS: Array-comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) is an approach that can be used on DNA extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues to assess the entire genome for the presence of changes in DNA copy number. In this study, high resolution, …

The Harm In Hate Speech: A Critique Of The Empirical And Legal Bases Of Hate Speech Regulation, John T. Bennett Jan 2016

The Harm In Hate Speech: A Critique Of The Empirical And Legal Bases Of Hate Speech Regulation, John T. Bennett

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Calls for hate speech censorship are largely premised upon the existence of certain social harms, including racial and gender inequalities, which are supposedly reinforced by hate speech. These inequalities, however, could be caused by a host of cultural and behavioral factors completely unrelated to hate speech, racial animus, discrimination, or any structural cause. The causal argument presented here has significant implications for the constitutionality of hate speech regulation. This article directly confronts the constitutional flaws, normative concerns, and empirical weaknesses inherent in a substantial body of hate speech scholarship. This article critically analyzes the legal and sociological premises of hate …

Review Of Island Queens And Mission Wives: How Gender And Empire Remade Hawai‘I’S Pacific World, By Jennifer Thigpen, Margaret D. Jacobs

Department of History: Faculty Publications

In Island Queens and Mission Wives, Jennifer Thigpen argues persuasively for the centrality of women and gender to the encounter between missionaries and Native Hawaiians in the nineteenth century. ... Thigpen offers new contributions to scholarship on missionary enterprises and colonialism by offering close readings of on-the-ground relationships between missionary and Hawaiian women. She successfully shows how women’s cross-cultural relationships within intimate settings became significant sites for the building of diplomatic and political alliances. ... Through its engagement with and extension of scholarship on gender and colonial encounters, Thigpen’s manuscript is a solid and engaging piece of historical scholarship.

A Subsequent Closed-Form Description Of Propagated Signaling Phenomena In The Membrane Of An Axon, Robert Melendy Jan 2016

A Subsequent Closed-Form Description Of Propagated Signaling Phenomena In The Membrane Of An Axon, Robert Melendy

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

I recently introduced a closed-form description of propagated signaling phenomena in the membrane of an axon [R.F. Melendy, Journal of Applied Physics 118, 244701 (2015)]. Those results demonstrate how intracellular conductance, the thermodynamics of magnetization, and current modulation, function together in generating an action potential in a unified, closed-form description. At present, I report on a subsequent closed-form model that unifies intracellular conductance and the thermodynamics of magnetization, with the membrane electric field, Em. It’s anticipated this work will compel researchers in biophysics, physical biology, and the computational neurosciences, to probe deeper into the classical and quantum features of membrane …

Investigation Of Hypothetico-Creative Reasoning Skills Of Teacher Trainees In Terms Of Their Thinking Styles, İsmail Gelen, Volkan Duran, Bayram Ozer

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Thinking styles more boradly intellectual styles refers to people’s partly fixed, relatively stable and innate preferences about information processing and handling with the tasks that they may confront (Zhang & Sternberg, 2005). Sternberg’s (1988) introduced of the theory of mental self-government, where intellectual style specifies 13 thinking styles that fall along five dimensions of mental self-government: (a) functions, (b) forms, (c) levels, (d) scopes, and (e) leanings of government as applied to individuals (Zhang, Sternberg, Rayner, 2002: 14).Hypothetico-Creative reasoning model developed by Duran (2014) can be defined skills including logical and creative thinking skills in 12 dimensions. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Symptomatology And Pediatric Obesity: Psychopathology Or Sleep Deprivation?, Alyssa Lundahl, Timothy D. Nelson Jan 2016

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Symptomatology And Pediatric Obesity: Psychopathology Or Sleep Deprivation?, Alyssa Lundahl, Timothy D. Nelson

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The relationship between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obesity in children has received considerable attention in recent years. However, the literature currently overlooks the potential causal and maintaining role that sleep problems may play in this relationship. Using a biopsychosocial framework, this article highlights how sleep problems impact the biological, psychological, and social aspects of both ADHD symptomatology and obesity. An in-depth examination of this model illustrates the imperative need for future research and clinical practice to recognize and explore the role sleep has in the link between obesity and ADHD symptomatology.

A Face Versus Non-Face Context Influences Amygdala Responses To Masked Fearful Eye Whites, M. Justin Kim, Kimberly M. Solomon, Maital Neta, Caroline Davis, Jonathan A. Oler, Emily C. Mazzulla, Paul J. Whalen Jan 2016

A Face Versus Non-Face Context Influences Amygdala Responses To Masked Fearful Eye Whites, M. Justin Kim, Kimberly M. Solomon, Maital Neta, Caroline Davis, Jonathan A. Oler, Emily C. Mazzulla, Paul J. Whalen

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The structure of the mask stimulus is crucial in backward masking studies and we recently demonstrated such an effect when masking faces. Specifically, we showed that activity of the amygdala is increased to fearful facial expressions masked with neutral faces and decreased to fearful expressions masked with a pattern mask – but critically both masked conditions discriminated fearful expressions from happy expressions. Given this finding, we sought to test whether masked fearful eye whites would produce a similar profile of amygdala response in a face vs. non-face context. During functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning sessions, 30 participants viewed fearful or …

Political Conservatism Predicts Asymmetries In Emotional Scene Memory, Mark S. Mills, Frank J. Gonzalez, Karl Giuseffi, Benjamin Sievert, Kevin B. Smith, John R. Hibbing, Michael D. Dodd Jan 2016

Political Conservatism Predicts Asymmetries In Emotional Scene Memory, Mark S. Mills, Frank J. Gonzalez, Karl Giuseffi, Benjamin Sievert, Kevin B. Smith, John R. Hibbing, Michael D. Dodd

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Variation in political ideology has been linked to differences in attention to and processing of emotional stimuli, with stronger responses to negative versus positive stimuli (negativity bias) the more politically conservative one is. As memory is enhanced by attention, such findings predict that memory for negative versus positive stimuli should similarly be enhanced the more conservative one is. The present study tests this prediction by having participants study 120 positive, negative, and neutral scenes in preparation for a subsequent memory test. On the memory test, the same 120 scenes were presented along with 120 new scenes and participants were to …

The Crisis In Scientific Publishing And Its Effect On The Admissibility Of Technical And Scientific Evidence, 49 J. Marshall L. Rev. 727 (2016), Kevin Hill Jan 2016

The Crisis In Scientific Publishing And Its Effect On The Admissibility Of Technical And Scientific Evidence, 49 J. Marshall L. Rev. 727 (2016), Kevin Hill

UIC Law Review

In 1993, the Supreme Court attempted to ensure the reliability of scientific, medical and technical evidence in Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The Court held that judges act as gate keepers to, and provided various criterion to guide judges in the admissibility of, technical and scientific evidence. This article examines one criterion, peer review publication, to determine whether changes in scientific publishing over the last twenty-three years have weakened peer review’s usefulness as a guide for judges. The author analyzes the decline of peer review, as a clear standard for measuring the reliability of articles, by examining four problems …

Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (PtoDC3000) is an extracellular model plant pathogen, yet its potential to produce secreted effectors that manipulate the apoplast has been under investigated. Here we identified 131 candidate small, secreted, non-annotated proteins from the PtoDC3000 genome, most of which are common to Pseudomonas species and potentially expressed during apoplastic colonization. We produced 43 of these proteins through a custom-made gateway-compatible expression system for extracellular bacterial proteins, and screened them for their ability to inhibit the secreted immune protease C14 of tomato using competitive activity-based protein profiling. This screen revealed C14-inhibiting protein-1 (Cip1), which contains …

Residues Responsible For The Selectivity Of Α-Conotoxins For Ac-Achbp Or Nachrs, Bo Lin, Shi-Hua Xiang, Mengsen Li

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are targets for developing new drugs to treat severe pain, nicotine addiction, Alzheimer disease, epilepsy, etc. α-Conotoxins are biologically and chemically diverse. With 12–19 residues and two disulfides, they can be specifically selected for different nAChRs. Acetylcholine-binding proteins from Aplysia californica (Ac-AChBP) are homologous to the ligand-binding domains of nAChRs and pharmacologically similar. X-ray structures of the α-conotoxin in complex with Ac-AChBP in addition to computer modeling have helped to determine the binding site of the important residues of α-conotoxin and its affinity for nAChR subtypes. Here, we present the various α-conotoxin residues that are selective …

Limited Mitogenomic Degradation In Response To A Parasitic Lifestyle In Orobanchaceae, Weishu Fan, Andan Zhu, Melisa Kozaczek, Neethu Shah, Natalia Pabón-Mora, Favio González, Jeffrey P. Mower

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

In parasitic plants, the reduction in plastid genome (plastome) size and content is driven predominantly by the loss of photosynthetic genes. The first completed mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) from parasitic mistletoes also exhibit significant degradation, but the generality of this observation for other parasitic plants is unclear. We sequenced the complete mitogenome and plastome of the hemiparasite Castilleja paramensis (Orobanchaceae) and compared them with additional holoparasitic, hemiparasitic and nonparasitic species from Orobanchaceae. Comparative mitogenomic analysis revealed minimal gene loss among the seven Orobanchaceae species, indicating the retention of typical mitochondrial function among Orobanchaceae species. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the mobile cox1 …

Soybean (Glycine max) is a major plant source of protein and oil and produces important secondary metabolites beneficial for human health. As a tool for gene function discovery and improvement of this important crop, a mutant population was generated using fast neutron irradiation. Visual screening of mutagenized seeds identified a mutant line, designated MO12, which produced brown seeds as opposed to the yellow seeds produced by the unmodified Williams 82 parental cultivar. Using forward genetic methods combined with comparative genome hybridization analysis, we were able to establish that deletion of the GmHGO1 gene is the genetic basis of …

Notch Drives Proliferation And Radiation Resistance Of Cancer Stem Cells In Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, Michael T. Chang Jan 2016

Notch Drives Proliferation And Radiation Resistance Of Cancer Stem Cells In Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, Michael T. Chang

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the salivary gland is an indolent but highly lethal neuroinvasive tumor with a propensity for radiation resistance, recurrence, and metastasis. Molecular understanding of this rare tumor has been hampered by the absence of validated in vitro models and a limited number of xenografts. Therapeutic options for ACC are limited to surgery and radiation and are associated with an unacceptably low rate of cure. Cancer stem cells (CSC) are an attractive therapeutic target, and understanding their role in ACC may advance therapy. Our objectives were: 1) to establish and validate ACC cell cultures, 2) to determine …

Rangeland Responses To Predicted Increases In Drought Extremity, David D. Breshears, Alan K. Knapp, Darin J. Law, Melinda D. Smith, Dirac L. Twidwell, Carissa L. Wonkka

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Rangeland managers actively focus on the potential to induce a shift in a site to an alternative state, but predicted changes in climate, particularly the likelihood of more extreme drought, necessitate reevaluating risks for alternative states. • Rangelands will differ in their susceptibility to undergo state changes due to climate change in general and for droughts of the future, in particular, which may be hotter. • Trees, shrubs, and grasses are expected to differ in their sensitivity to drought, with trees likely being most sensitive; this affects the likelihood for state changes in grasslands, shrublands, woodlands, and savannas. • Considering …

Cloning Of Two Basic Helix-Loop-Helix Transcription Factor Genes From Tartary Buckwheat (Fagopyrum Tataricum) And Their Expression Under Abiotic Stress, Xiao-Peng Luo, Hai-Xia Zhao, Jun Xue, Cheng-Lei Li, Hui Chen, Sang-Un Park, Qi Wu Jan 2016

Cloning Of Two Basic Helix-Loop-Helix Transcription Factor Genes From Tartary Buckwheat (Fagopyrum Tataricum) And Their Expression Under Abiotic Stress, Xiao-Peng Luo, Hai-Xia Zhao, Jun Xue, Cheng-Lei Li, Hui Chen, Sang-Un Park, Qi Wu

Turkish Journal of Biology

Basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors are one of the most important transcription factors involved in abiotic stress tolerance in Tartary buckwheat. In this study, we successfully isolated two bHLH transcription factor genes, designated as FtbHLH1 and FtbHLH2, from Tartary buckwheat. Their encoding proteins were found to have a motif to interact with R2R3-MYB at the N-terminus and a typical bHLH motif at the C-terminus. Yeast one-hybrid assay proved that the two bHLH proteins exhibited obvious transcriptional activation activities. The abiotic stresses indicated that FtbHLH1 expression would be mainly affected by drought and UV-B, whereas FtbHLH2 expression would present a sensitive …
