How Successful Female Elementary Principals Effectively Balance Their Personal And Professional Lives, Janel Bonomo Jan 2016

How Successful Female Elementary Principals Effectively Balance Their Personal And Professional Lives, Janel Bonomo

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative case-study was to understand how successful female elementary Educational administrators from Indiana defined their roles in order to obtain personal and professional balance. Specifically, this study identified successful female leaders and the strategies, talents, and skills that they use. This study also sought to provide insight into self-efficacy used by successful female leaders as a personal resource. As a result of this study, common themes were discovered. When life is out of balance, conflict, stress, and unhappiness occur (Goodchild, 2006). The utilization of helpful strategies, talents, and skills by participants in this study adds predictability …

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem, Academic Success, And Retention In Students Of Color At Cornell College, Schvalla Raymeil Rivera

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although some research has been conducted on the subject of academic success and retention in students of color, attention has not been paid to students of color who attend predominately White private postsecondary liberal arts institutions. Many students of color face a major dilemma when entering the world of higher Education; first, they must prove to their family, peers, and community that they have not sold out” their Black values while in the pursuit of mainstream or White” values (Neville, Heppner, & Wang, 1997). Second, they must confront feelings of inadequacy and isolation that very often come along with their …

Accurate analysis of specific microvesicles (MVs) from biofluids is critical and challenging. Here we described novel methods to purify and detect MVs shed from endothelial cells (ECs) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) by combining microbeads with fluorescence quantum dots (Q-dots) coupled nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA). In the in vitroscreening systems, we demonstrated that 1) anti-CD105 (EC marker) and anti-CD34 (EPC marker) conjugated-microbeads had the highest sensitivity and specificity for isolating respective MVs, which were confirmed with negative controls, CD41 and CD235a; 2) anti-CD144 (EC marker) and anti-KDR (EPC marker) conjugated-Q-dots exhibited the best sensitivity and specificity for their respective …

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) has a poor prognosis due to widespread intrahepatic spread. Aspartate β-hydroxylase (ASPH) is a transmembrane protein and catalyzes the hydroxylation of aspartyl and asparaginyl residues in calcium binding epidermal growth factor (cbEGF)-like domains of various proteins, including Notch receptors and ligands. ASPH is highly overexpressed (>95%) in human CCA tumors. We explored the molecular mechanisms by which ASPH mediated the CCA malignant phenotype and evaluated the potential of ASPH as a therapeutic target for CCA. The importance of expression and enzymatic activity of ASPH for CCA growth and progression was examined using shRNA “knockdown” and a mutant …

Neurocognitive Implications Of Sport-Related Concussion In High School Athletes Over-Time, Evan Lee Smith Jan 2016

Neurocognitive Implications Of Sport-Related Concussion In High School Athletes Over-Time, Evan Lee Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The identification of sport-related concussion (mild traumatic brain injury [mTBI]), its neurocognitive sequelae, and subsequent management have become a top priority within a spectrum of research disciplines at the intersection of psychology and sports medicine. To properly understand the complex neurocognitive changes associated with sport-related concussion in high school age individuals, multiple aspects of the injury were explored including the psychobiological nature of the injury, diagnostic concerns, normative adolescent neurocognitive development and abnormal changes as a result of the injury, and risk for further injury. While a wealth of literature exists in these areas, one aspect in particular, neurocognitive changes …

Unraveling the drivers controlling the response and adaptation of biological communities to environmental change, especially anthropogenic activities, is a central but poorly understood issue in ecology and evolution. Comparative genomics studies suggest that lateral gene transfer (LGT) is a major force driving microbial genome evolution, but its role in the evolution of microbial communities remains elusive. To delineate the importance of LGT in mediating the response of a groundwater microbial community to heavy metal contamination, representative Rhodanobacter reference genomes were sequenced and compared to shotgun metagenome sequences. 16S rRNA gene-based amplicon sequence analysis indicated that Rhodanobacter populations were highly abundant …

Maple syrup is a widely consumed plant-derived natural sweetener produced by concentrating xylem sap collected from certain maple (Acer) species. During thermal evaporation of water, natural phytochemical components are concentrated in maple syrup. The polymeric components from maple syrup were isolated by ethanol precipitation, dialysis, and anion exchange chromatography and structurally characterized by glycosyl composition analysis, glycosyl linkage analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Among the maple syrup polysaccharides, one neutral polysaccharide was characterized as inulin with a broad molecular weight distribution, representing the first isolation of this prebiotic carbohydrate from a xylem sap. In addition, two acidic …

Treatment Options For Skin And Soft Tissue Infections Caused By Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Renee Weinberg Jan 2016

Treatment Options For Skin And Soft Tissue Infections Caused By Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, Renee Weinberg

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogen responsible for common skin infections, such as impetigo, cellulitis, folliculitis, and abscess and it is the most common cause for skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI). Humans are carriers of this microorganism and are responsible for facilitating its spread around the world. Over time it has developed resistance to multiple antibiotics, such as penicillin and methicillin, which has made S. aureus a persistent problem in the healthcare world today. Its methicillin resistance has given it the more commonly known name methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). MRSA was initially discovered solely in the healthcare environment and thus …

Retrospective Assessment Of Treatment With T-Dm1 After Pertuzumab In Her2-Positive Metastatic Breast Cancer, Hannah Elizabeth Dzimitrowicz

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

T-DM1/ ado-trastuzumab emtansine, the most recent addition to the HER2-targeted therapies approved to treat HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC), is an antibody-drug conjugate with a favorable side effect profile. T-DM1 is currently approved for patients with HER2-positive MBC who previously received trastuzumab and a taxane. Since the trial resulting in T-DM1 approval was conducted, the standard first-line therapy for metastatic HER2-positive breast cancer has changed from trastuzumab and a taxane to a three-drug combination of trastuzumab and a taxane plus pertuzumab. Due to the timing of these approvals, there is no clinical trial or observational data on the activity of …

Malignancies Associated With Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Nicole Gong Jawitz Jan 2016

Malignancies Associated With Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Nicole Gong Jawitz

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), specifically Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, have been associated with numerous intestinal and extra- intestinal malignancies. Recent studies have suggested use of immunomodulator therapies has increased risks of malignancies, including melanoma, non-epithelial skin cancers, cervical cancer, and bladder and urinary tract cancers. The question regarding how biologic agents, which became a mainstay therapy of IBD in the early 2000s, have influenced malignancy risk among patients with IBD has yet to be definitely answered.

The aims of this study were to characterize prevalence of comorbid malignancies among hospitalized patients with IBD and how it has changed over …

Revision Of The Synechococcales (Cyanobacteria) Through Recognition Of Four Families Including Oculatellaceae Fam. Nov. And Trichocoleaceae Fam Nov. And Seven New Genera Containing 14 Species, Truc Mai

Masters Theses

A total of 48 strains of thin, filamentous cyanobacteria in the Synechococcales were studed by sequencing 16S rRNA, rpoC1, and rbcLX gene fragments. A subset of these were carefully characterized morphologically. Bayesian analysis of the 16S rRNA gene data in a large alignment of Synechococcales (345 OTU's) was in agreement with the phylogeny based on the rpoC1 gene for 59 OTU's. Both indicated that the large family-level grouping formerly classified as the Leptolyngbyaceae could be further divided into four family-level clades. Two of these family-level clades have been recognized previously as Leptolyngbyaceae and Prochlorotrichaceae. The Oculatellaceae fam. prov. and Trichocoleaceae …

Delaying Change: Examining How Industry And Managerial Turbulence Impact Structural Realignment, Samina Karim, Tim N. Carroll, Chris P. Long

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles

This paper examines when firms pursue structural realignment through business unit reconfiguration, specifically by recombining business units. Our results refine and extend contingency theory and studies of organization design by drawing on theories of decision avoidance and delay to describe environmental conditions when firms pursue or postpone structural realignment. Our empirical analysis of 46 firms from 1978 to 1997, operating within the U.S. medical device and pharmaceutical sectors, demonstrates that while decision makers initiate structural recombination during periods of industry growth (i.e., munificence), they reduce their recombination efforts during periods of industry turbulence (i.e., dynamism), and managerial turbulence (i.e., growth …
