Ladies In The Bath: Nude Portraiture In The French Renaissance, Sophie Kerwin
Ladies In The Bath: Nude Portraiture In The French Renaissance, Sophie Kerwin
Honors Thesis Collection
The School of Fontainebleau produced a striking group of portraits depicting nude and half-nude women bathing or at their toilette. These paintings are exceptional for the period in that nudity was primarily reserved for allegorical or mythological contexts. The identity of the women depicted in these mysterious paintings has been a continual source of fascination for scholars who have suggested the royal mistresses Diane de Poitiers, Marie Touchet, Catherine Henriette de Balzac d’Entrague, and Gabrielle d’ Estrées as well as the queen Mary Stuart as possible subjects. Beyond the women’s precise identities, however, the paintings elicit many questions; this thesis …

El Significado De Salud: Social Determinants Of Health, Public Policy, And Mexican-Born Women In Chicago, Nikita Saladi
El Significado De Salud: Social Determinants Of Health, Public Policy, And Mexican-Born Women In Chicago, Nikita Saladi
Honors Thesis Collection
According to the World Health Organization, social determinants of health are the "conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life." To attain better health outcomes, such determinants and the public policies that shape them must be considered. In my research, I attempt to answer two questions: how do social determinants of health such as socioeconomic status, place, and access to health care affect the health of Mexican-born women in Chicago? Furthermore, how do public policies shape such determinants and the health of these …

The Stigma Of Mental Illness In South Asian Cultures, Tahani Chaudhry
The Stigma Of Mental Illness In South Asian Cultures, Tahani Chaudhry
Honors Thesis Collection
The stigma of mental illness in South Asian cultures has harmful effects on individuals in these societies (Kishore, Gupta, Jiloha, & Bantman, 2011). The present research examines the influence of cultural values on stigmatizing attitudes of individuals from different ethno-cultural groups, and further examines how these values may be passed on to future generations. Study 1 examined the endorsement of three kinds of stigma (public stigma, onset responsibility, and courtesy stigma) in three ethnic-cultural groups in the United States (South Asians, East Asians and European Americans), and tested the associations of these stigmas with cultural mechanisms (collectivism/individualism; interdependent/independent self-construals). Contrary …

Honors Thesis Collection
Glugacon-like-peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) is a G protein-coupled receptor located on the β-cells of the pancreas. When the incretin hormone, glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1), binds to GLP-1R, it triggers intracellular signaling cascades that lead to insulin release from pancreatic β-cells. However, the half-life of GLP-1 in plasma is less than two minutes, which makes GLP-1 ineffective to administer as a drug for treatment of abnormal glucose levels. Previous studies have investigated GLP-1R agonists for use of glucose-lowering therapy. T-0632, a non-peptidic small molecule, is an inverse agonist of GLP-1R. Understanding the molecular interactions of binding between T-0632 and GLP-1R within the binding pocket …

Eutrophication and warming of lakes are occurring globally. Lake Baikal, a large ancient lake composed of three basins, has recently experienced benthic eutrophication at local sites and lake warming in the south basin. Here, we look for signals of warming and pelagic eutrophication across the entire lake using physical and biological data collected at a subset of 79 stations sampled ca. annually (1977–2003) during the period of summer stratification. Lake-wide, surface waters warmed 2.0 °C; and, consistent with this warming, the abundance of two warm-water, cosmopolitan zooplankton taxa increased between two (pelagic cladocerans) and 12-fold (Cyclops kolensis). C. kolensis increased …

Nonverbal Communication Of Similarity Via The Torso: It’S In The Bag, Angela J. Bahns, Christian S. Crandall, Omri Gillath
Faculty Research and Scholarship
The human body plays a central role in nonverbal communication, conveying attitudes, personality, and values during social interactions. Three experiments in a large, open classroom setting investigated whether the visibility of torso-located cues affects nonverbal communication of similarity. In Expts. 1 and 2, half the participants wore a black plastic bag over their torso. Participants interacted with an unacquainted same-sex individual selected from a large class who was also wearing (or also not wearing) a bag. Expt. 3 added a clear bag condition, in which visual torso cues were not obscured. Across experiments, black bag-wearing participants selected partners who were …

Similarity In Relationships As Niche Construction: Choice, Stability, And Influence Within Dyads In A Free Choice Environment, Angela J. Bahns, Christian S. Crandall, Kristopher J. Preacher
Faculty Research and Scholarship
A series of field studies focused on the role of similarity as niche construction in friendships. Using a free-range dyad harvest method, we collected 11 independent samples with 1,523 interacting pairs, and compared dyad members’ personality traits, attitudes, values, recreational activities, and alcohol and drug use. Within-dyad similarity was statistically significant on 86% of variables measured. To determine whether similarity was primarily due to niche construction (i.e., selection) or social influence, we tested whether similarity increased as closeness, intimacy, discussion, length of relationship, and importance of the attitude increased. There were no effects on similarity of closeness, relationship length, or …

The Writing Center: Reports
As a university hub for campus conversations about writing and other forms of communication, the University of Montana Writing Center administers programs to help undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines become more versatile and effective thinkers, writers, and readers. In one-to-one and small-group tutoring sessions and whole-class workshops, tutors help students recognize their strengths and weaknesses as communicators and to practice strategies appropriate to various communication contexts. In addition, the Writing Center collaborates with faculty to provide instruction that positively impacts student performance, and supports faculty to promote their own development as writers.

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
Development of novel vaccine deliveries and vaccine adjuvants is of great importance to address the dilemma that the vaccine field faces: to improve vaccine efficacy without compromising safety. Harnessing the specific effects of laser on biological systems, a number of novel concepts have been proposed and proved in recent years to facilitate vaccination in a safer and more efficient way. The key advantage of using laser technology in vaccine delivery and adjuvantation is that all processes are initiated by physical effects with no foreign chemicals administered into the body. Here, we review the recent advances in using laser technology to …

Radioresistance Of Brain Tumors, K. Kelley, J. Knisely, M. Symons, R. Ruggieri
Radioresistance Of Brain Tumors, K. Kelley, J. Knisely, M. Symons, R. Ruggieri
Journal Articles
Radiation therapy (RT) is frequently used as part of the standard of care treatment of the majority of brain tumors. The efficacy of RT is limited by radioresistance and by normal tissue radiation tolerance. This is highlighted in pediatric brain tumors where the use of radiation is limited by the excessive toxicity to the developing brain. For these reasons, radiosensitization of tumor cells would be beneficial. In this review, we focus on radioresistance mechanisms intrinsic to tumor cells. We also evaluate existing approaches to induce radiosensitization and explore future avenues of investigation.
