Structural Parameter Identification Of Wind-Excited High-Rise Buildings With Limited Output Measurements, Ying Lei, Qiaona Wang, Lijun Liu
Structural Parameter Identification Of Wind-Excited High-Rise Buildings With Limited Output Measurements, Ying Lei, Qiaona Wang, Lijun Liu
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, an algorithm is proposed for the identification of structural parameters of tall buildings under unknown wind loading with limited measurements of acceleration response outputs. Dynamic wind loading on tall buildings at typical levels is estimated based on the fluctuating properties of wind. A tall building is decomposed into small size substructures based on its finite element formulation. Interconnection effects between adjacent substructures are considered as ‘additional unknown inputs’ to substructures. For each substructure, the identification algorithm is based on sequential application of extended Kalman estimator for the extended state vector of the substructure and least-squares estimation of …

Exome Screening To Identify Loss-Of-Function Mutations In The Rhesus Macaque For Development Of Preclinical Models Of Human Disease, Adam Cornish, Robert M. Gibbs, Robert B. Norgren
Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy
BACKGROUND: Exome sequencing has been utilized to identify genetic variants associated with disease in humans. Identification of loss-of-function mutations with exome sequencing in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) could lead to valuable animal models of genetic disease. Attempts have been made to identify variants in rhesus macaques by aligning exome data against the rheMac2 draft genome. However, such efforts have been impaired due to the incompleteness and annotation errors associated with rheMac2. We wished to determine whether aligning exome reads against our new, improved rhesus genome, MacaM, could be used to identify high impact, loss-of-function mutations in rhesus macaques that would …
Interfacial Mechanical Strength Characterization In Multilayered Materials Via Nanoscale Impact And Nano Mechanical Raman Spectroscopy Experiments, Devendra Verma
Open Access Dissertations
A composite materials strength can significantly depend on the constitutive description of interfaces. A computational model of composite deformation should, therefore, incorporate interface constitutive behavior. These interfaces poses several challenges in studying them due their length scales of micrometer to nanometer as well the coupling of other factors such as confinement during the loading. Thus, separating main phase constitutive behavior from interface constitutive behavior in mechanical property measurement experiments is an arduous task. In this work, an epoxy interface between glass plates is analyzed under quasistatic and dynamic loading conditions to obtain a description of interfacial constitutive response at strain …
Exiles Of Heteronormativity: Queer Reproduction And Female Same-Sex Families In Singapore, Nur Adlina B. Maulod
Exiles Of Heteronormativity: Queer Reproduction And Female Same-Sex Families In Singapore, Nur Adlina B. Maulod
Open Access Dissertations
In Singapore, same-sex desires and practices are treated as antithetical to the Family. This dissertation challenges the rhetorical monolith of the traditional family by documenting intimate stories of alternative reproduction from the experiences of female citizens who have been treated as exiles of heteronormative kinship.

Current sorghum milling processes result in high milling losses and inconsistent flour quality. Appropriate tempering methods could improve the quality and quantity of flour extracted from sorghum.
Understanding U.S. Racial Tensions In The 21st Century, Taylor Newquist
Understanding U.S. Racial Tensions In The 21st Century, Taylor Newquist
2016 Symposium
This study takes a sociological outlook on the reasons Latin American immigrants migrate to the United States. The study will uncover the racist outlook and stereotypes Americans feel toward this particular immigrant group whether they be documented or undocumented. Using academic peer review sources, the study uncovers the factors that produce these negative attitudes towards this outgroup and sheds light on best practices to reduce racial tensions between them. Among these strategies include cracking down on extreme political rhetoric that incites prejudicial attitudes and potential violence.

This article reviews the fundamental behavior of piezoelectric for applications in sensors and energy harvesting technologies. In fact, many devices and applications are evolving day-to-day depending on smart materials technology such as, scanning probe microscope (SPM) and cigarette lighters. Today, vibration based energy harvesting via piezoelectric materials has become one of the most prominent ways to provide a limited energy for self-powered wireless sensor and low power electronics. This review provides an insight that involves mathematical modeling of constitutive equations, lumped parameter model, mechanisms of piezoelectric energy conversion, and operating principle of a piezoelectric energy harvesting system. This article also …
Film: Deaf Characters, Miriam Nathan Lerner, Edna Edith Sayers
Film: Deaf Characters, Miriam Nathan Lerner, Edna Edith Sayers
Articles
This entry focuses on films made by American and foreign filmmakers who have little or no special interest in or knowledge about deaf people or Deaf communities. Casting hearing actors to portray deaf characters is unfortunately common. Because neither the filmmakers, the expected audiences, nor the actors know anything about d/Deaf people, inauthenticities are widespread. These problems are only slightly improved by casting a Deaf actor: Deaf actors can portray authentic use of a sign language but are often limited by the script, the director, and the editing process. Therefore, while the signing community commends the casting of Deaf actors, …

Why is patria (“fatherland”) a feminine noun? How is it that virtus (“courage”), though etymologically linked with the masculine vir, is also a feminine noun? And more vexingly, what is it about a book (liber) that makes it masculine instead of, say, neuter? When first-year Latin students ask these sorts of questions, our immediate impulse is to reassure them that grammatical gender is just that—grammatical. Trying to divine some underlying sexual characteristic that makes courage feminine or a book masculine is not only futile but also counterproductive to early language learning. As I tell my own students: …
Asian Carp In The Diet Of River Otters In Illinois, Preston Feltrop, Clayton K. Nielsen, Eric M. Schauber
Asian Carp In The Diet Of River Otters In Illinois, Preston Feltrop, Clayton K. Nielsen, Eric M. Schauber
Publications
Populations of invasive silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (H. nobilis), collectively known as “Asian carp,” are growing rapidly in Illinois and may make up a large fraction of available prey for river otters (Lontra canadensis) in larger waterbodies. Our goals were to assess the frequency of Asian carp in otter diets and compare the frequency of occurrence of prey groups (fish, crayfish, and amphibians) in otter diets between land cover types and seasons. We searched for Asian carp otoliths and pharyngeal teeth, as well as parts of other fishes, crayfish, and amphibians …

Nature's Humans, The National Juried Art Exhibition, Esther E. Randall
The Chautauqua Journal
Each year, the Giles Gallery at Eastern Kentucky University, in conjunction with the Chautauqua Lecture Series, mounts a juried art exhibition organized around that year’s theme. Ann Tower of Ann Tower Gallery served as juror for the 2010-2011 show (January 24 through February 18, 2011), Chautauqua National Juried Exhibition: Nature’s Humans. Both the selection of the artwork and the awarding of prizes were done through a blind process, meaning that the juror had no information about the individual artists or their background.
Art exhibitions organized around a theme present special problems for artists. Their restrictive nature excludes many artists …

Nanometric Resolution Magnetic Resonance Imaging Methods For Mapping Functional Activity In Neuronal Networks, Albert Boretti, Stefania Castelletto
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This contribution highlights and compares some recent achievements in the use of k-space and real space imaging(scanning probe and wide-filed microscope techniques), when applied to a luminescent color center in diamond, known as nitrogen vacancy (NV) center. These techniques combined with the optically detected magnetic resonance of NV, provide a unique platform to achieve nanometric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) resolution of nearby nuclear spins (known as nanoMRI), and nanometric NV real space localization. Atomic size optically detectable spin probe. High magnetic field sensitivity and nanometric resolution. Non-invasive mapping of functional activity in neuronal networks.

PURPOSE. Recent studies indicate that mitochondrial proteins may contribute to the pathogenesis of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). In this study, we examined the association between POAG and common variations in gene-encoding mitochondrial proteins. METHODS. We examined genetic data from 3430 POAG cases and 3108 controls derived from the combination of the GLAUGEN and NEIGHBOR studies. We constructed biological-system coherent mitochondrial nuclear-encoded protein gene-sets by intersecting the MitoCarta database with the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. We examined the mitochondrial gene-sets for association with POAG and with normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) and high-tension glaucoma (HTG) subsets using Pathway Analysis …

Tumor microenvironment has been recognized as a key determinant of tumor formation and metastasis, but how tumor microenvironment is affected by nanomaterials is essentially unknown. Here, we investigated whether carbon nanotubes (CNTs), a widely used nanomaterial with known carcinogenic potential, can affect cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), which are a key component of tumor microenvironment that provides necessary support for tumor growth. We show for the first time that single-walled CNT and to a lesser extent multi-walled and its COOH-functionalized form induced CAF-like cells, which are non-tumorigenic in animals, but promote tumor growth of human lung carcinoma and CNT-transformed lung epithelial cells. …

Embryonic Markers Of Cone Differentiation, Helen M. Rodgers, Marycharmain Belcastro, Maxim Sokolov, Peter H. Mathers
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Purpose: Photoreceptor cells are born in two distinct phases of vertebrate retinogenesis. In the mouse retina, cones are born primarily during embryogenesis, while rod formation occurs later in embryogenesis and early postnatal ages. Despite this dichotomy in photoreceptor birthdates, the visual pigments and phototransduction machinery are not reactive to visual stimulus in either type of photoreceptor cell until the second postnatal week. Several markers of early cone formation have been identified, including Otx2, Crx, Blimp1, NeuroD, Trβ2, Rorβ, and Rxrγ, and all are thought to be involved in cellular determination. However, little is known about the expression of proteins involved …
