Topic Manipulation In Five Children With Language Impairment In Response To Topic Probes, Kimberly Kasey Baker Dec 2016

Topic Manipulation In Five Children With Language Impairment In Response To Topic Probes, Kimberly Kasey Baker

Theses and Dissertations

This study describes a series of case studies on topic management patterns of five children (ages 5 to 10 years) with language impairment. The children participated in semi-structured topic tasks that assessed conversational abilities on topics that were verbally introduced and topics that were introduced both verbally and with an object. Although there was considerable variability among participants, the children generally responded to most introductions by acknowledging and maintaining the topic. With the exception of one child, however, the children in this study demonstrated immature topic manipulation patterns that could be expected to have negative social ramifications.

An Observation On Direct Changes In Aedes Albopictus Midgut Cells By Rhus Tox 6c In Relation To Dengue Virus Infection, Moonmoon Sinha, Enakshi Roy, Satadal Das, Debabrata Sarkar, Debadatta Nayak, Anil Khurana, Raj Manchanda

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

Background and Objectives: In mosquito vectors, dengue virus (DENV) invasion occurs through midgut cells, but available mosquito cell lines for in vitro study of DENV are prepared from eggs or larvae, which are not appropriate models, to study its infectivity. Hence, we developed a new primary cell culture, from Aedes albopictus mosquito midgut, and standardized it for in vitro study of DENV, with an aim to find out any possible role of homoeopathic medicines, in preventing or reducing DENV invasiveness in these midgut cells. This midgut primary cell culture demonstrated prominent cytopathic effects on infection with wild DENV isolated from …

Thesis Inquiry & Process: Something About Reality, Blayke Mackenzie Morrow Dec 2016

Thesis Inquiry & Process: Something About Reality, Blayke Mackenzie Morrow

Theses

This thesis documents the employment of a system of Process and Inquiry as it serves as a structural foundation for an investigation of the manner in which Reality is represented in visual portraiture. Through a vigorous exploration of the concept of Reality and its singular nature, it is hypothesized that intrinsically unique experiences could potentially be communicated through the perceptive abilities of the emotional quotient. The effects of media, timing, complexity, abstraction, and authenticity are examined for their effect on the apparent clarity of concepts transmitted in this manner. The inquiry ultimately manifests in the daily creation of self-portraiture, as …

Heart Valve Mathematical Models, Paula Kolar Dec 2016

Heart Valve Mathematical Models, Paula Kolar

Theses

Nearly 100,000 heart valve replacements or repairs are performed in the US every year. Mathematical models of heart valves are used to improve artificial valve design and to guide surgeons performing valve-repairing surgeries. Models can be used to define the geometry of a valve, predict blood flow dynamics, or demonstrate operating mechanisms of the valve. In this thesis we reviewed features that are typically considered when developing a model of a heart valve. The main modeling methods include representing a heart valve using lumped parameters, finite elements, or isogeometric elements. Examples of a lumped-parameter model and isogeometric analysis are explored. …

Observing Behavior Of Fluid Flow Through Carbon Nanotube Arrays, Anna T. Jensen Dec 2016

Observing Behavior Of Fluid Flow Through Carbon Nanotube Arrays, Anna T. Jensen

Theses

This work establishes a platform technique for visualizing fluid transport through Anoidisc Alumina Oxide (AAO) membranes, which can be applied to Carbon Nanotube (CNT) arrays, and allow for the testing of the effects of other parameters on flow. Arrays of CNTs have shown significant promise for delivering biomolecules into cells with high efficiency while maintaining cell viability. In these applications, biomolecules flow through CNT arrays manufactured in our lab using Template-Based Chemical Vapor Deposition. By culturing cells on the opposite side of the array, they can be used to transfect biomolecules into cells. In this research, it was discovered that …

Actuation Of An Inertia-Coupled Rimless Wheel Model Across Level Ground, Seth Caleb Weeks Dec 2016

Actuation Of An Inertia-Coupled Rimless Wheel Model Across Level Ground, Seth Caleb Weeks

Theses

The inertia-coupled rimless wheel model is a passive dynamic walking device which is theoretically capable of achieving highly efficient motion with no energy losses. Under non-ideal circumstances, energy losses due to air drag require the use of actuation to maintain stable motions. The Actuated Inertia-coupled Rimless Wheel Across Flat Terrain (AIRWAFT) model provides actuation to an inertia-coupled rimless wheel model across level ground to compensate for energy losses by applying hip-torque between the frame and inertia wheel via a motor. Two methods of defining the open-loop actuation are presented. Position control defines the relative position of the drum relative to …

Relationship Between Velocity Of Contraction And Force Applied On Air Muscles, Aniruddha Sudhir Phatak Dec 2016

Relationship Between Velocity Of Contraction And Force Applied On Air Muscles, Aniruddha Sudhir Phatak

Theses

Air muscles are simple pneumatic devices that have high potential to be used as robotic manipulators, as they have a behavior similar to biological motors or muscles. Hence, they have a wide range of potential applications in areas such as robotics, bio-robotics, biomechanics, and artificial limb replacements. In addition to the similarity to biological muscle, air muscles have the advantages of good power-to-weight ratio, being compliant, and low cost. This thesis primarily quantifies the relationship between velocity of contraction of air muscles and the force applied on it, which is a key characteristic of biological skeletal muscle. First, an experimental …

A Validation Study Of Gearing And Musculoskeletal Performance In Simple Biological Systems Through Theoretical And Experimental Methods, Jenna Marie Hopkins Dec 2016

A Validation Study Of Gearing And Musculoskeletal Performance In Simple Biological Systems Through Theoretical And Experimental Methods, Jenna Marie Hopkins

Theses

Musculoskeletal (MSK) systems have long been compared to simple mechanical machines. This not only allows for ease of understanding locomotion, but ease of modeling a biological system during complex motion. More specifically, simple lever systems are most commonly employed to approximate mechanical performance of complex biological systems. Every simple lever system can be characterized by its mechanical advantage, also known as gearing. Through this concept, the performance of a biological system can be modeled for comparability of theoretical concepts to actual MSK systems. In this thesis, a numerical model of a simple lever system, analogous to a locust leg and …

What Factors Affect Broca Beetle (Hypothenemus Hampei) Incidence In Coffea Arabica Plants At Life Monteverde?, December 2016, Ari Simon

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The goal of this study was to identify the factors that affect incidence of the coffee berry borer (CBB) or Broca beetle, Hypothenemus hampei. I surveyed three sites within the Life Monteverde coffee plantation in Costa Rica. The three sites varied from High (C2) to Medium (C14) to Low (C18) historical incidence of Broca infestation. Six 6x3m plots per study site were created and I selected four plants per plot. Per plant, I chose five branches with the one condition that the branch had a high density of berries (n>50). I conducted observations between 15 and 23 November 2016 …

The Effects Of A Possible Soil Nitrogen Gradient On Mimosa Pigra Root Nodule Density And Black Bean Plant Growth, December 2016, Ronnie E. Appleseed Dec 2016

The Effects Of A Possible Soil Nitrogen Gradient On Mimosa Pigra Root Nodule Density And Black Bean Plant Growth, December 2016, Ronnie E. Appleseed

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Cattle produce feces that contain organic nitrogen. The farm at the University of Georgia (UGA) station in San Luis, Monteverde is built on a sloping hill with nitrogen producing cattle present on the top and absent at the bottom. The legume Mimosa pigra has a mutualistic relationship with nitrogen fixing Rhizobia bacteria and is found growing as a weed on the UGA farm. I hypothesized that the possible decrease in soil [N] along the UGA farm hill would result in decreased Mimosa root nodule densities and that the greatest nodule densities would be found in plants growing closest to the …

Call Variation In Mixed-Species And Single-Species Flocks Of The Common Chlorospingus In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2016, Jesse Fichmman Dec 2016

Call Variation In Mixed-Species And Single-Species Flocks Of The Common Chlorospingus In Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2016, Jesse Fichmman

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The Common Chlorospingus (Chlorospingus flavopectus opthalmicus) is a common highland bird found from Mexico to Bolivia that travels and forages in mono- especific and mixed-species flocks. When foraging in mixed-species flocks, the Common Chlorospingus plays an integral role as a nuclear species and forages primarily for arthropods instead of fruit. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there is a difference between chlorospingus chip calls in mixed species versus single species flocks, and if there is then to explore why they exhibit this difference. I recorded the calls of C. ophtalmicus both in single species and …

Fate Of Fallen Fruit: Cebus Capucinus Fruit Droppings Eaten By Agoutis And Others, December 2016, Delaney Roth Dec 2016

Fate Of Fallen Fruit: Cebus Capucinus Fruit Droppings Eaten By Agoutis And Others, December 2016, Delaney Roth

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

White-faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus) are omnivores that forage in tree canopies eating mostly fruits. Though many previous studies have been done on the foraging behavior and diet of white-faced capuchins, there is little information available on their feeding behavior in terms of fruit dropping while eating. This study was done on a group of 13 wild white-faced capuchins in Bajo del Tigre, Monteverde, Costa Rica over a two-week observational period. I observed the feeding behavior of the white-faced capuchins, including number of fruit pieces dropped by the capuchins during 30-second focal observations. I noted animals, such as agoutis, that were …

Effectiveness Of The Minima Caste Of The Leafcutter Ant (Atta Cephalotes) On Cleaning Harvested Leaves, December 2016, Tori Braun Dec 2016

Effectiveness Of The Minima Caste Of The Leafcutter Ant (Atta Cephalotes) On Cleaning Harvested Leaves, December 2016, Tori Braun

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Leafcutter ants have been practicing agriculture longer than humans themselves. Leafcutter ant species, Atta cephalotes, common to Central and South America, cultivate a unique fungus, Leucocoprinus gonogylophora, that sustains the lives of millions of leafcutter ants within a single colony. In order to be efficient farmers, A. cephalotes have developed a caste system consisting of a queen, soldiers, workers, and minima. Each caste has a specific role within the colony, however, the role of the minima is still highly debated among scientists. It is hypothesized that the minima clean the surface of the leaves collected from nearby plants on the …

Immune Dimorphism In Wild Mice Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2016, Danielle M. Thoene Dec 2016

Immune Dimorphism In Wild Mice Of Monteverde, Costa Rica, December 2016, Danielle M. Thoene

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Rodents are at risk as climate change and human interference promote the spread of infectious disease. As a result, understanding the relationship between disease and population characteristics is important in developing conservation and management strategies. I investigated the existence of immune dimorphism, which is the variation in immune response and function between sexes, in mice of the Monteverde region. I captured a total of 33 mice and 1 rat: Heteromys nubicolens (n=18), Peromyscus nudipes (n=13), Scotinomys teguina (n=1), and Oligoryzomys fulvescens (n=1). For each captured individual, I collected all visible ectoparasites and took a blood sample for further laboratory analysis. …

Diversity And Phenotypes Of Diurnal And Nocturnal Coleopterans In The Monteverde Cloud Forest Zone, December 2016, Marianne Kim

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Coleoptera, or more commonly known as beetles, are the largest and most diverse order within the arthropods. This study aimed to categorize the diversity between diurnal and nocturnal beetles as well as determine if there are distinguishing phenotypes between the two groups. For a total of five days, I collected diurnal and nocturnal beetles throughout the tropical cloud forests of the Monteverde zone in Costa Rica and identified to Family. For each species, I recorded the size, coloration (number of colors visible and light versus dark tones), pattern, texture, and iridescence and compared between diurnal and nocturnal beetles. With respect …

The Development Of Self In Multicultural Experiences, Dennise Jackson Dec 2016

The Development Of Self In Multicultural Experiences, Dennise Jackson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Be yourself. What does that mean? The “self” is a complex phenomenon constructed and deconstructed in various ways to accommodate or complement the social environment one is in. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Self as, “a particular part of your personality or character that is shown in a particular situation” (Merriam-Webster). Many theorist, behaviorist and sociologist continue to capitalize on the role that the external environment such as cultural trends, values and beliefs play in the construction of self. As humans we have the unique ability to adapt and assimilate to the way of living in a new environment as a …

Implementing Arts-Integrated Lessons Through Auto-Ethnography To Improve Teacher Collaboration, Richard M. Romero Jr Dec 2016

Implementing Arts-Integrated Lessons Through Auto-Ethnography To Improve Teacher Collaboration, Richard M. Romero Jr

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

By utilizing the auto-ethnographical approach to writing in the creatively structured format of an arts-integrated exercise that is project-based, this study analyzes qualitative responses made by one administrator and three in-service teachers. By retroactively highlighting students’ epiphanies of musical memories (see Appendix D) while also integrating Common-Core and State Standards into its structural design, it produced an activity that was extremely challenging for fifth-grade students but also may hold potential for growth in writing skills and self-knowledge especially as it relates to the practice of teacher self-study. This approach may be utilized in classrooms in the future, but any integration …

Epigenetic Profiling Reveals A Developmental Decrease In Promoter Accessibility During Cortical Maturation In Vivo, Ishwariya Venkatesh, Matthew T. Simpson, Denise M. Coley, Murray G. Blackmore Dec 2016

Epigenetic Profiling Reveals A Developmental Decrease In Promoter Accessibility During Cortical Maturation In Vivo, Ishwariya Venkatesh, Matthew T. Simpson, Denise M. Coley, Murray G. Blackmore

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Axon regeneration in adult central nervous system (CNS) is limited in part by a developmental decline in the ability of injured neurons to re-express needed regeneration associated genes (RAGs). Adult CNS neurons may lack appropriate pro-regenerative transcription factors, or may display chromatin structure that restricts transcriptional access to RAGs. Here we performed epigenetic profiling around the promoter regions of key RAGs, and found progressive restriction across a time course of cortical maturation. These data identify a potential intrinsic constraint to axon growth in adult CNS neurons. Neurite outgrowth from cultured postnatal cortical neurons, however, proved insensitive to treatments that improve …

Sugarcane Bagasse Hydrolysis Enhancement Using Bsa, Antonio Carlos Freitas Dos Santos Dec 2016

Sugarcane Bagasse Hydrolysis Enhancement Using Bsa, Antonio Carlos Freitas Dos Santos

Open Access Theses

Lignocellulose is composed of polysaccharides linked to lignin and other aromatic compounds, making the sugars not readily available to fermentation. This entails that biomass must go through the unit operations of pretreatment and enzyme hydrolysis. Pretreatment opens the structure to allow the enzymes to act on and hydrolyze cellulose and hemicellulose to glucose and/or xylose which in turn are fermented to ethanol. Concomitantly, the enzymes interact with soluble phenols and insoluble solids derived from lignin that inhibit hydrolysis. This leads to high enzyme loadings and higher production costs. Soluble phenols can be eliminated through washing. Insoluble lignin, however, demands another …

Impact Of Microwave-Assisted Heating And Enzymatic Treatment On Functional And Antioxidant Properties Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) By-Product Hydrolysates, Elizabeth Bich Hang Nguyen Dec 2016

Impact Of Microwave-Assisted Heating And Enzymatic Treatment On Functional And Antioxidant Properties Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) By-Product Hydrolysates, Elizabeth Bich Hang Nguyen

Open Access Theses

Fish protein hydrolysates (FPH) have been widely used as a mean to better utilize fishery by-products through the use of proteolytic enzymes to produce a wide range of functional peptides that can be used as food ingredients. Studies have shown that these functional peptides have enhanced interface-stabilizing properties (e.g. functionality) and antioxidant activity. FPH production can be accelerated by using rapid heating methods (e.g. microwave) compared to slower conventional heating (CH). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of microwave heating (MW) during enzymatic hydrolysis on functionality and antioxidant properties of FPH. Treatments consisted of adding Alcalase™ …

Multiplex Real Time Pcr And Melt Curve Assay Development For The Simultaneous Detection And Identification Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae And Staphylococcus Aureus, Melissa J. Pierpont Dec 2016

Multiplex Real Time Pcr And Melt Curve Assay Development For The Simultaneous Detection And Identification Of Streptococcus Pneumoniae And Staphylococcus Aureus, Melissa J. Pierpont

All NMU Master's Theses

Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae are bacteria that commonly colonize healthy individuals without causing disease. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), a more virulent type of S. aureus, is carried by a small percentage of people. These two bacteria have an adversarial relationship both in vitro and in vivo, with S. pneumoniae being able to limit the growth of S. aureus. It has been hypothesized that the relationship between these bacteria may be altered in individuals immunized with the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, raising concerns that vaccinated individuals may be more likely to carry MRSA. Assessing the carriage rate of these bacteria …

Evaluation Of A Multiplex Real-Time Pcr Assay To Simultaneously Detect Streptococcus Pneumoniae And Staphylococcus Aureus In Nasal Samples, Polly Hockberger Dec 2016

Evaluation Of A Multiplex Real-Time Pcr Assay To Simultaneously Detect Streptococcus Pneumoniae And Staphylococcus Aureus In Nasal Samples, Polly Hockberger

All NMU Master's Theses

Invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus is associated with nasal carriage of these bacteria. Use of a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in children altered nasal carriage rates and reduced infections due to S. pneumonia. Similar studies demonstrate that there is an inverse correlation between S. pneumoniae and S. aureus nasal carriage in children, but this inverse correlation has not been extensively investigated adults. The PCV is now approved for use in adults, a group more likely to be colonized with S. aureus. To investigate the impact of PCV vaccination on S. aureus carriage in adults, the …

Wolf Predation: Where And How Wolves Kill Beavers, And Confronting The Biases In Scat-Based Diet Studies, Thomas Gable Dec 2016

Wolf Predation: Where And How Wolves Kill Beavers, And Confronting The Biases In Scat-Based Diet Studies, Thomas Gable

All NMU Master's Theses

Beavers can be a significant prey item for wolves in boreal systems but how wolves hunt beavers is largely unknown. I inferred how wolves hunt beavers by identifying 22 kill sites using clusters of locations from GPS-collared wolves in Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota. Where wolves killed beavers varied seasonally with the majority (58%) of kills in the spring occurring below dams and on shorelines while the majority (80%) of kills in the fall were near feeding trails and canals. I deduced that the typical hunting strategy has 3 components: 1) waiting near areas of high beaver use until a beaver …

The Relationship Between P300 Evoked Potentials And Prefrontal Cortex Oxygen Use: A Combined Eeg And Nirs Study, Will S. Rizer Dec 2016

The Relationship Between P300 Evoked Potentials And Prefrontal Cortex Oxygen Use: A Combined Eeg And Nirs Study, Will S. Rizer

All NMU Master's Theses

The P300 subcomponent, P3b, is an event related potential detected at the scalp surface when a working memory comparison results in differences between the contents of working memory and incoming stimulus information. Previous research has indicated that as infrequent targets become more difficult to detect (morphologically similar to a frequent non-target stimulus) the P300 becomes attenuated. fMRI research has also indicated increased prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity during P300 generation. To examine the relationship between P3b amplitude and PFC activity participants performed an easy and difficult target detection task in both EEG and NIRS called the oddball. The EEG and behavioral …
