The Effects Of Time Of Day And Circadian Rhythm On Performance During Variable Levels Of Cognitive Workload, Kathryn A. Feltman Dec 2016

The Effects Of Time Of Day And Circadian Rhythm On Performance During Variable Levels Of Cognitive Workload, Kathryn A. Feltman

Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the effects of time of day of testing on a simulated aviation task. The tasks required the participants to engage in multitasking while electroencephalogram (EEG) data was collected to objectively measure participants’ workload. Task demands were altered throughout the testing period to expose participants to both high and low workload conditions. Additionally, individual differences in circadian rhythm were explored by assessing participants’ circadian typology. No significant differences in performance were found resulting from time of day differences. However, performance and EEG differences were found based on phase of testing and workload manipulations. Subjective workload measures were …

A New System For Human Microrna Functional Evaluation And Network, Jiachun Han Dec 2016

A New System For Human Microrna Functional Evaluation And Network, Jiachun Han

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

MicroRNAs are functionally important endogenous non-coding RNAs that silence host genes in animal and plant via destabilizing the mRNAs or preventing the translation. Given the far-reaching implication of microRNA regulation in human health, novel bioinformatics tools are desired to facilitate the mechanistic understanding of microRNA mediated gene regulation, their roles in biological processes, and the functional relevance among microRNAs. However, most state-of-the-art computational methods still focus on the functional study of microRNA targets and there is no e ective strategy to infer the functional similarity among microRNAs. In this study, we developed a new method to quantitatively measure the functional …

Using Software Testing Techniques To Infer Biological Models, Mikaela Cashman Dec 2016

Using Software Testing Techniques To Infer Biological Models, Mikaela Cashman

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Years of research in software testing has given us novel ways to reason about and test the behavior of complex software systems that contain hundreds of thousands of lines of code. Many of these techniques have been inspired by nature such as genetic algorithms, swarm intelligence, and ant colony optimization. However, they use a unidirectional analogy – taking from nature without giving back.

In this thesis we invert this view and ask if we can utilize techniques from testing and modeling of highly-configurable software systems to aid in the emerging field of systems biology which aims to model and predict …

Rectilinear Steiner Tree Construction, Zhiliu Zhang Dec 2016

Rectilinear Steiner Tree Construction, Zhiliu Zhang

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Minimum Rectilinear Steiner Tree (MRST) problem is to find the minimal spanning tree of a set of points (also called terminals) in the plane that interconnects all the terminals and some extra points (called Steiner points) introduced by intermediate junctions, and in which edge lengths are measured in the L1 (Manhattan) metric. This is one of the oldest optimization problems in mathematics that has been extensively studied and has been proven to be NP-complete, thus efficient approximation heuristics are more applicable than exact algorithms.

In this thesis, we present a new heuristic to construct rectilinear Steiner trees (RSTs) with …

Determination Of Plant Architecture And Component Phenotyping Based On Time-Lapse Image Analysis, Srinidhi Bashyam Dec 2016

Determination Of Plant Architecture And Component Phenotyping Based On Time-Lapse Image Analysis, Srinidhi Bashyam

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Plant breeding and the development of new food production depend on accurate measurement of different phenotypes (observable physical traits) of a plant. The plant phenotypes play a very important role in the agronomic production. The successful computation of plant phenotypes largely depends on the determination of the architecture of the plant, i.e., the arrangement of its parts (leaves, stems, flowers, etc.) relative to each other, and how the size, shape, and positions of those parts change over time. Researchers and breeders extract valuable information from these types of data to make an informed decision on which individuals to advance to …

The Effects Of Active Learning Technology On Instructors’ Practices And Students’ Engagement And Grades: A Mixed Methods Study, Jeremy C. Van Hof Dec 2016

The Effects Of Active Learning Technology On Instructors’ Practices And Students’ Engagement And Grades: A Mixed Methods Study, Jeremy C. Van Hof

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Partly in response to university teachers’ changing pedagogies marked by flipping instruction, lecture capture technologies are evolving into active learning systems. Little published research exists on the effects of active learning technology on either teachers or students. This two-phase sequential explanatory mixed methods study details the effects that active learning systems have on instructor practices and on student grades and engagement. Phase one combined quantitative data collection with instructor interviews. Phase one findings show higher student engagement levels correlate with the use of the active learning system only in the presence of very specific, flipped classroom practices. Phase two, a …

Lgbt Client Satisfaction At A University-Associated Primary Care Center, Christopher M. Bouma Dec 2016

Lgbt Client Satisfaction At A University-Associated Primary Care Center, Christopher M. Bouma

Doctoral Projects

Sexual minority individuals are a vulnerable population. Historically this has led to worse access to care and worse health outcomes compared to heterosexual individuals; this can be addressed through changes to practice. Patient satisfaction has also been a health care focus in recent years for all patients. This project examined patient satisfaction in a small university-associated primary care center and compared patient satisfaction scores for sexual minorities to heterosexual respondents. This was conducted after a series of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) educational initiatives with center staff. A total of 73 individuals chose to participate. Most individuals were highly …

Draft Genome Of The Leopard Gecko, Eublepharis Macularius, Zijun Xiong, Fang Li, Long Zhou, Tony Gamble, Jiao Zheng, Ling Kui, Cai Li, Shengbin Li, Huanming Yang, Guojie Zhang

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Geckos are among the most species-rich reptile groups and the sister clade to all other lizards and snakes. Geckos possess a suite of distinctive characteristics, including adhesive digits, nocturnal activity, hard, calcareous eggshells, and a lack of eyelids. However, one gecko clade, the Eublepharidae, appears to be the exception to most of these ‘rules’ and lacks adhesive toe pads, has eyelids, and lays eggs with soft, leathery eggshells. These differences make eublepharids an important component of any investigation into the underlying genomic innovations contributing to the distinctive phenotypes in ‘typical’ geckos.

Findings

We report high-depth genome sequencing, assembly, and …

Super Pac Funding And Its Impact On Voting Behavior In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Michael J. Scariano Dec 2016

Super Pac Funding And Its Impact On Voting Behavior In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Michael J. Scariano

Honors Theses

In light of the increasing levels of polarization in terms of voting behavior among members of the U.S. House of Representatives over the 112th, 113th, and 114th Congresses, coupled with the recent Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commision 558 U.S. 310 (2010), which authorized the use of unlimited fundraising and expenditure by outside groups in elections, the question was raised whether or not there was a correlation between these two occurrences. Specifically, this paper asks “what role does Super PAC funding play in the roll call vote choices of House Members of the 114th Congress?” To …

Glutathione S-Transferase P In Glucose Homeostasis In Mice., Shubha Ghosh Dastidar Dec 2016

Glutathione S-Transferase P In Glucose Homeostasis In Mice., Shubha Ghosh Dastidar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High calorie diets have fostered the current pandemic of obesity and comorbid conditions of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), systemic insulin resistance (IR) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Hepatic glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are dysregulated in obesity, NAFLD and diabetes. The multifunctional GST pi isoform (GSTP) catalyzes acrolein metabolism and inhibits JNK (c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase). The purpose of this study was to test specifically whether GSTP deficiency disturbs glucose homeostasis in mice. Hepatic GST proteins were downregulated by short-term high fat diet (HFD) in wild type (WT) mice concomitant with glucose intolerance, increased hepatic JNK activation and protein-acrolein …

The Role Of The Mir-200 Family On The Tumor Suppressor Rassf2 And The Effect On Mapk Pathway Activity In Colorectal Cancer., Jane V. Carter Dec 2016

The Role Of The Mir-200 Family On The Tumor Suppressor Rassf2 And The Effect On Mapk Pathway Activity In Colorectal Cancer., Jane V. Carter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigated the role of the miR-200 family in normal colon epithelial (CCD 841) and Dukes’ C (HT-29) colorectal cancer (CRC) cell lines. Our aim was to characterize expression of the miR-200 family (miR-200a, miR-200b, miR-200c, miR-141, and miR-429) in colorectal cell lines, study their effect on the tumor suppressor Ras Associated Domain-Containing Protein (RASSF) 2 and on subsequent activity within the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. We wanted to determine whether regulation of miR-200 family members could change cell behavior towards more “cancer-like” in a normal colon epithelium (CCD 841) cell line, or less “cancer-like” in a …

"If This Stuff Matters, Why Isn't It Being Shared?" : Citations, Hyperlinks, And Potential Public Futures Of Online Writing In Rhetoric And Composition., Elizabeth Frances Bergeron Chamberlain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses two deceptively discrete questions: (1) how academics might reach wider public audiences, and (2) how and why people cite the way they do. It takes citation practices as a telling though often tacit practice, one through which it is possible trace the contours of a larger story about how writing is changing as it moves online. That story: Writers increasingly reflect goals of provocation, of attracting a wider and potentially global audience, of spreading a message rapidly and virally, of responding to recent events and conversations, of sharing sources and resources. To explore these questions, this dissertation …

Distress, Circadian Rhythms, Immunity, And Survival In Presurgical Breast Cancer Patients., Whitney Nicole Rebholz Dec 2016

Distress, Circadian Rhythms, Immunity, And Survival In Presurgical Breast Cancer Patients., Whitney Nicole Rebholz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Women with breast cancer experience significant stress related to diagnosis and treatment, which may negatively affect physiology (e.g., circadian, endocrine, and immune) and contribute to cancer progression. Demographic (e.g., ethnic minority) and neighborhood factors can contribute to cancer-related stress. African American women with breast cancer experience more adverse disease pathology and earlier mortality; however, factors that explain these disparities rarely have been explored. It is hypothesized that psychosocial stressors (i.e., ethnicity, neighborhood stress, and cancerrelated stress) will be related to one another. Associations of psychosocial stress with physiological disruption are posited with regard to circadian, endocrine, and immune function. It …

An American Reset – Safe Water & A Workable Model Of Federalism, Cara Cunningham Warren Dec 2016

An American Reset – Safe Water & A Workable Model Of Federalism, Cara Cunningham Warren

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

In 2015, at least 3.9 million Americans were exposed to lead in their drinking water at legally unacceptable levels. An additional 18 million Americans were at risk because their water systems were not in compliance with federal rules designed to detect the presence of lead contamination and to ameliorate its impact. What’s more, in 82 percent of the cases where the violation related to a health standard, no formal state or federal enforcement action was taken.

These startling statistics indicate that the Flint Water Crisis (“Flint Water”) is not an isolated event. In fact, it is a case study that …

Anti-Tumor Mechanisms Of Hpv16 E6*, Whitney S. Evans Dec 2016

Anti-Tumor Mechanisms Of Hpv16 E6*, Whitney S. Evans

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

High-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are the causative agents of nearly all cases of cervical cancer, as well as a significant number of head, neck, penile, vulvar and anal cancers. Like many other viruses with small genomes, HPV (~8 kb) utilizes numerous mechanisms to increase the capacity of its genome to encode the proteins necessary for successful completion of its infectious life cycle, including alternative splicing. Studies over the past few decades have focused intensively on the activities and roles of E6 proteins from HR-HPVs during the process of cellular transformation, clearly implicating E6 as a major transforming …

Cyclically-Forced Hyperpycnites Of The Ancient Colorado River Proximal Prodelta, Sandra R. Waresak Dec 2016

Cyclically-Forced Hyperpycnites Of The Ancient Colorado River Proximal Prodelta, Sandra R. Waresak

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Prodeltaic deposits record a distal, minimally reworked archive of dominant processes active at the fluvial-marine interface. The Fish Creek-Vallecito Basin (CA, US) preserves an ~3 km-thick, lower Pliocene, progradational deltaic succession formed when the ancestral Colorado River infiltrated the early Gulf of California. The interpreted prodeltaic unit in this succession (Mud Hills Member of the Deguynos Formation) contains an ~40 m-thick interval of rhythmic bedding with consistently alternating silt- to fine sand-dominated and clay-dominated beds forming couplets with an average thickness of 12 cm. Sedimentological analysis of the rhythmites reveals the couplets are laterally persistent with gradational to sharp, flat …

The Role Of Two Homologous E3 Ligases In Muscle Physiology, Gabrielle F. Gloston Dec 2016

The Role Of Two Homologous E3 Ligases In Muscle Physiology, Gabrielle F. Gloston

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Ubiquitin-mediated proteasomal degradation is an essential cellular function that is coordinated by three key components: E1 ubiquitin activating enzyme, E2 ubiquitin conjugating enzyme, and E3 ubiquitin ligases. There are an estimated 600 E3 ligases, some of which share high sequence homology; however, the functional significance often remains unknown. FBXL3 and FBXL21 are two homologous E3 ligases that have previously been reported to dictate circadian periodicity, with FBXL3 being the dominant E3 ligase and FBXL21 playing a regulatory role. A recent Yeast Two-Hybrid screen revealed a new shared target of FBXL3 and FBXL21: Telethonin (also known as TCAP). TCAP is a …

California’S Curse: Perpetual Drought And Persistent Land Development, Gabrielle Kavounas Dec 2016

California’S Curse: Perpetual Drought And Persistent Land Development, Gabrielle Kavounas

San Diego Law Review

This Comment argues that the California state legislature should take direct control of private water use rights through legislation that amends California’sConstitution Article X, Section 2, providing the state with the police powerto take back private water rights and centralize control over water management and distribution.[1] It also recommends imposing higher requirements for land development and water agency cooperation in standard form, state-controlled“general plans” to create efficiency in distributing water throughout the stateand in planning new land developments. The public trust doctrine, eminentdomain doctrine, and regulatory takings doctrine are possible justifications the state could use to effectuate the new legislation. …

Engineered Human Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf1) With An Enhanced Thermal And Proteolytic Stability, Duaa Abdullah Almansaf Dec 2016

Engineered Human Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf1) With An Enhanced Thermal And Proteolytic Stability, Duaa Abdullah Almansaf

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) is made up of three significant domains. The most important domain is the intracellular domain where the dimerization and autophosphorylation occur. Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) interacts with specific FGFR to regulate many cellular processes during the embryonic stage. Furthermore, FGF is significant for adults because FGF plays an important role in regulating cellular differentiation as well as wound healing. The cellular regulating processes are initiated through binding FGF to heparin followed by binding FGF/heparin to FGFR to form FGF/heparin/FGFR complex. Thus, FGFR is dimerized and autophosphorylated. The phosphorylation of FGFR triggers downstream signaling pathways, which …
