Towards Artificial Proprioception In The Mandibular Full Arch Fixed Implant Prosthesis, Md Abu Hasan Dec 2016

Towards Artificial Proprioception In The Mandibular Full Arch Fixed Implant Prosthesis, Md Abu Hasan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Full arch fixed implant prosthesis has been one of the most effective treatment modalities for fully edentulous patients over the last few decades. However, due to lack of proprioception occlusal overload is experienced by the prosthesis and its components causing major biomechanical complications such as screw/abutment fracture, framework fracture, and bone loss. The currently available approaches for the overload management rely on external appliances such as an occlusal splint or bite guard and result in occlusal discomfort and high patient dissatisfaction. In this research, an approach to induce artificial proprioception in the full arch fixed implant prosthesis is proposed. However, …

A Novel Approach For Fabrication Of Single Silicon/Silicon Oxide Nanopillars At Precise Locations, Sravan Chowdary Talasila Dec 2016

A Novel Approach For Fabrication Of Single Silicon/Silicon Oxide Nanopillars At Precise Locations, Sravan Chowdary Talasila

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Nanopillars exhibit novel electrical and optical properties which could not be obtained from bulk materials. Many of their practical applications would require controlled placement of nanopillars at exact locations. However, precise placement and large scale fabrication of nanopillars have been challenging with conventional fabrication techniques. This thesis investigates a new approach to fabricate nanopillars at exact locations on a large scale. In this approach, fabrication of nanopillars is accomplished by first placing nanoparticles (NP) at exact locations and then performing anisotropic dry etching using these NPs as hard masks, resulting in formation of nanopillars on exact substrate positions. Precise placement …

System Health Monitoring Using Multiple-Model Adaptive Estimation Techniques, Stanley Ryan Sifford Dec 2016

System Health Monitoring Using Multiple-Model Adaptive Estimation Techniques, Stanley Ryan Sifford

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Monitoring system health for fault detection and diagnosis by tracking system parameters concurrently with state estimates is approached using a new multiple-model adaptive estimation (MMAE) method. This novel method is called GRid-based Adaptive Parameter Estimation (GRAPE). GRAPE expands existing MMAE methods by using new techniques to sample the parameter space. GRAPE expands on MMAE with the hypothesis that sample models can be applied and resampled without relying on a predefined set of models. GRAPE is initially implemented in a linear framework using Kalman filter models. A more generalized GRAPE formulation is presented using extended Kalman filter (EKF) models to represent …

Non-Invasive Measurement Of The Internal Temperature Of Heat-Generating Bodies, Dean Raymond Anthony Dec 2016

Non-Invasive Measurement Of The Internal Temperature Of Heat-Generating Bodies, Dean Raymond Anthony

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

While the surface temperature of a heat-generating solid body can be measured using a variety of methods, there is a scarcity of techniques that exist for non-invasively measuring the temperature inside the solid body. Internal temperature measurement is very desirable as mere measurement of surface temperature gives no indication of the internal temperature. The highest temperature, usually located at the core of the body, dictates system performance and safety. For example, Li-ion cells provide good energy storage and conversion characteristics, but unfortunately suffer from safety problems related to overheating due to insufficient heat removal during operation. The following thesis presents …

Fem Analysis Of Composite Stringers For An Airplane Fuselage, Akashsingh Birendrasingh Thakur

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

With the advent of technology, materials have advanced many folds; One such technical revelation has been Fiber-reinforced Composite Materials. Composite materials have two major advantages, among many others: Improved strength and stiffness, especially compared to other materials on a unit weight basis. For example, Composite materials have stiffness comparable to the stiffness of steel but with a strength decimal order higher and more than three times lighter. These advantages have led to new aircraft and spacecraft designs that are radical departures from past efforts based on conventional materials. The stringers serve to take up(along with the skin) the compression and …

Bioengineering Dissertations - Archive

Human brain development is structurally and functionally a nonlinear process and even with the tremendous advancements in the field of neuroimaging based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) several significant questions remain un-answered. Although brain change and adaption are part of a lifelong process, the earliest phases of maturation, especially from birth to early childhood, are perhaps the most dramatic and important. During this early developmental period, the structural and functional organization of the brain are continuously shaped by a combination of synaptogenesis, dendritic arborization, myelination and synaptic pruning. The current research aims to use more recently developed MRI techniques of …

The overall goal of this study is to evaluate the high potential of the UV-LED technology to treat water contaminated with pharmaceuticals including sulfamethoxazole, ibuprofen, and triclosan. In particular, important operational parameters were investigated, including UV wavelength, …

Residual Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Soil Nitrogen Pools And Corn Growth, Meghan E. Moser Dec 2016

Residual Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Soil Nitrogen Pools And Corn Growth, Meghan E. Moser

Open Access Theses

Given the dynamic nature of soil nitrogen (N), inorganic N fertilization to corn (Zea mays L.) has potential to alter N pool balance by creating an accumulation or depletion of soil N. Current corn N recommendations in the common corn-soybean rotation of Indiana strive to find the best N rate that maximizes producer profit. Increasing our understanding of soil N will inform producers if they should adjust fertilizer rates for corn to influence maintenance of organic N and Carbon. Our objective was to determine residual N effects from fertilized corn in a corn-soybean rotation by measuring (1) soil N …

Origins And Maintenance Of Diversity In A Vertebrate Parthenogen, Alex Scott Hall Dec 2016

Origins And Maintenance Of Diversity In A Vertebrate Parthenogen, Alex Scott Hall

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Clonal lineages are expected to experience a decline in fitness over time due to their inability to decouple deleterious and beneficial alleles. Individually, however, asexual populations pass twice as much of their DNA per generation as sexual lineages. This balancing act between Muller's Ratchet and the lack of the two-fold cost of sex in asexuals brings significant scientific intrigue to instances of asexual populations. Among vertebrates, squamates (and mainly lizards) are uniquely capable of true parthenogenesis whereby females reproduce without males. These lineages are always hybrid, as is the case with parthenogenetic Aspidoscelis lizards (Teiidae). In particular, the checkered whiptail …

Studies On Settlement Characteristics Of Lithomargic Clay Stabilized With Cement, Purushotham G. Sarvade Dr

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

The lithomargic clay (shedi soil) is the name given to the locally available silty sand, which is present in between weathered laterite and hard granite gneiss throughout the Konkan belt of Southern India. As long as this soil is confined and dry, there is no problem, but on the exposure in a cutting or when it is exposed to water, it loses its strength drastically. Hence, modification of this soil is necessary to reduce settlement and improve the bearing capacity. In the present investigation, Ordinary Portland cement was used as a stabilizer to improve the soil. The investigation revealed that …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

There is an increasing need for precise molecular detection as a diagnostic tool for early identification of diseases, pathogens, and abnormal protein levels in the body. Typical chemical analytical methods are generally costly, unstable, and time-consuming. Molecular imprinting (MI) technique, based on the “lock and key model†, could be a simple method to overcome those shortcomings. In this study, a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) was employed as a platform to fabricate MI biosensor for detection of macromolecules. I demonstrated that, when the monolayer was formed on a rough surface, this method was in fact templating molecules in three dimensions, and hence …

A Medical Decision Model For Tinnitus Treatment Assessment, Hong Don Ihn

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Tinnitus means objective somatosounds, and subjective auditory or sensorineural perception of noise without external physical sounds. There are several tinnitus treatments, but it is difficult to ascertain how otorhinolaryngologists rank the alternatives of treatments due to the insufficiency of available evidence and standards. A hierarchical decision model (HDM), a popular multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method, can help to implement a comprehensive assessment of tinnitus treatments and rational decision-making to select the appropriate tinnitus treatments. The HDM considers a holistic approach using multiple dimensions, criteria and expert judgments to acquire the relative ranking of candidate tinnitus treatments. The four dimensions selected …
