The Growth And Ecology Of Upper Cambrian Microbialite Biostromes From The Notch Peak Formation In Utah, Ken P. Coulson Jun 2016

The Growth And Ecology Of Upper Cambrian Microbialite Biostromes From The Notch Peak Formation In Utah, Ken P. Coulson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Exposure of carbonate rocks within the uplifted mountains of southwestern Utah presents a unique opportunity to study the growth, morphology and ecology of two upper Cambrian microbialite reefs located within the Hellnmaria Member of the Notch Peak Formation. The first reef contains meter-length, strongly elongate microbialites that grew in a deep, subtidal marine environment. These elongate microbialites formed as a result of coalescence of round ‘algal’ heads, a process known to produce compound microbialite structures in shallow water, but seldom explored as a key factor in the elongation of deep, subtidal forms that grew in ancient environments. The second reef …

Strategies For Protecting Privacy In Open Data And Proactive Disclosure, Teresa Scassa, Amy Conroy Jun 2016

Strategies For Protecting Privacy In Open Data And Proactive Disclosure, Teresa Scassa, Amy Conroy

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

In this paper, the authors explore strategies for balancing privacy with transparency in the release of government data and information as part of the growing global open government movement. The issue is important because government data or information may take many forms, may contain many different types of personal information, and may be released in a range of contexts. The legal framework is complex: personal information is typically not released as open data or under access to information regimes; nevertheless, in some cases transparency requirements take precedence over the protection of personal information. The open courts principle, for example, places …

The Role Of Bed Shear Stress In Sediment Sorting Patterns In A Reconstructed, Gravel Bed River, Samuel Emerson Jun 2016

The Role Of Bed Shear Stress In Sediment Sorting Patterns In A Reconstructed, Gravel Bed River, Samuel Emerson

Master's Theses

The role of bed shear stress in bed surface grain size sorting was investigated on a reconstructed reach of the Merced River in the Central Valley of California. Pebble count data were collected at the inside, middle, and outside of ten bends in April 2015 and compared to data from pebble counts conducted in previous years. Output from a previously developed 2D flow model (FaSTMECH) was compared to critical shear stresses calculated from median grain-size data. Comparison of pebble count results from 2002 through 2015 showed that there was no temporally consistent pattern of coarsening or fining along the study …

Variation In Adrenal And Thyroid Hormones With Life-History Stage In Juvenile Northern Elephant Seals (Mirounga Angustirostris), Jennifer Jelincic Jun 2016

Variation In Adrenal And Thyroid Hormones With Life-History Stage In Juvenile Northern Elephant Seals (Mirounga Angustirostris), Jennifer Jelincic

Master's Theses

Interpretation of stress responses in wildlife is inadequate due to the range of natural variation and potential confounds of individual and life-history variables. In marine mammals, endocrine response data are sparse and variable across species. Blood adrenal and thyroid hormones were measured in 144 chemically immobilized yearling elephant seals at Año Nuevo State Reserve to characterize variation between sexes and across semiannual haul-outs. There was no relationship between hormone concentration and time needed for collecting blood or diel pattern, suggesting that concentrations represented baseline values. Serum cortisol concentrations did not vary with gender or across fasts but increased dramatically during …

Intercolony Comparison Of Diets Of Western Gulls In Central California, Anne L. Cassell Jun 2016

Intercolony Comparison Of Diets Of Western Gulls In Central California, Anne L. Cassell

Master's Theses

As human populations expand, they force free-ranging animals to adapt to an increasingly urban environment, resulting in changes in diets, reproductive success, and mortality. The diets of two western gull (Larus occidentalis) breeding populations in central California were compared. One colony, Año Nuevo Island (ANI), is 1 km from shore and within 30 km of a municipal landfill. The other colony, Southeast Farallon Island (SEFI), is located 45 km off the shore of San Francisco, CA. Given the proximity of ANI to the shore and the landfill, I predicted that gulls from ANI would have more garbage in their diets. …

Effects Of Global Change On Algal Biomineralization And Benthic Community Interactions On California's Temperate Rocky Reefs, Emily Marie Donham Jun 2016

Effects Of Global Change On Algal Biomineralization And Benthic Community Interactions On California's Temperate Rocky Reefs, Emily Marie Donham

Master's Theses

Marine ecosystems are threatened by CO2-driven global change, such as ocean warming and acidification (OA). The primary objectives of this study were to: 1) assess the response of the coralline red alga, Calliarthron cheilosporioides, to global change; and 2) investigate the responses of California’s kelp forest communities to OA and sea urchin grazing. Results indicated that C. cheilosporioides growth and calcification were reduced under both increased temperatures and increased pCO2 despite increased photosynthetic rates in high pCO2 conditions. Mineralogy did not differ among treatments as a function of warming or acidification. Differences were observed in Mg incorporation into calcified walls …

Effects Of Substrate Warming On Sessile Marine Invertebrate Communities In Monterey Bay, California, Stephen Loiacono Jun 2016

Effects Of Substrate Warming On Sessile Marine Invertebrate Communities In Monterey Bay, California, Stephen Loiacono

Master's Theses

Increasing average global sea temperatures are one of the most direct and alarming consequences of climate change, yet it is still unclear how sessile marine communities will respond in the near- and long-term. In addition, it is unclear if warming ocean temperatures will facilitate marine invasions or primarily benefit native species. To simulate the effects of increasing ocean temperatures on sessile communities, heated settlement plates (n=7) were used in an in situ field experiment to investigate how an increase in substrate temperature (2.5°C above ambient) would affect recruitment and community development as compared to unheated control plates (n=9). Experimental treatments …

Treatment Of Sk-Mel-28 Cells With R-Moj-Dm Upregulates Pro-Apoptotic Genes P53 And Tnf-B While Downregulating Oncogene C-Myc, Melissa Lombardo Jun 2016

Treatment Of Sk-Mel-28 Cells With R-Moj-Dm Upregulates Pro-Apoptotic Genes P53 And Tnf-B While Downregulating Oncogene C-Myc, Melissa Lombardo

Master's Theses

Cell death by apoptosis is the result of one or multiple signaling pathways that can be initiated inside or outside the cell for a variety of reasons. Integrins, expressing themselves on the cell surface, play a central role in some apoptotic pathways. Cancer cells have been known to bypass this function and upregulate survival factor genes in order to elude apoptosis and thrive in the body, thus creating an environment in which it is possible for them to grow and metastasize. Previously in Dr. Soto’s lab, a recombinant disintegrin mutant, r-Moj-DM, was shown to induce apoptosis in melanoma cell line …

Death As Meridian: Paul Celan's Translations Of Emily Dickinson's "Because I Could Not Stop For Death" And "Let Down The Bars, Oh Death", Alyssa Devey Jun 2016

Death As Meridian: Paul Celan's Translations Of Emily Dickinson's "Because I Could Not Stop For Death" And "Let Down The Bars, Oh Death", Alyssa Devey

Theses and Dissertations

Paul Celan's translations of Emily Dickinson's poems Because I could not stop for Death and Let down the Bars, Oh Death illuminate the global metaphor inherent in both poems' exploration of death. Celan's The Meridian speech, coupled with Dickinson's poems I saw no way and Tell all the truth, suggest that language can move in different directions across a globe at the same time. When these different lines meet, they reach a meridian of the spiritual and the material. As Celan translates Dickinson's two poems, he uses this global metaphor to place more emphasis on death and to further illuminate …

Deficient, Adequate And Excess Nitrogen, Phosphorus, And Potassium Growth Curves Established In Hydroponics For Biotic And Abiotic Stress-Interaction Studies In Lettuce, Douglas Keith Jacobson Jun 2016

Deficient, Adequate And Excess Nitrogen, Phosphorus, And Potassium Growth Curves Established In Hydroponics For Biotic And Abiotic Stress-Interaction Studies In Lettuce, Douglas Keith Jacobson

Theses and Dissertations

Mineral nutrients have marked effects on plant health by providing the building blocks for plant growth, as well as for mitigating abiotic and biotic stress factors, particularly disease development. Even if mineral nutrition field studies are conducted to study pest management, they are at the mercy of complex soil, water, and climatic conditions not amenable to strict experimental control. Therefore, a hydroponic method of growing lettuce was developed and growth curves were established for the macronutrients nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Lettuce plants were grown at varying levels of each nutrient: 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160, …

The Modern Mr. Darcy: An Analysis Of Leading Men In Contemporary Romantic Comedy Film, Amanda Rebekah Roskelley Jun 2016

The Modern Mr. Darcy: An Analysis Of Leading Men In Contemporary Romantic Comedy Film, Amanda Rebekah Roskelley

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an observation and analysis of male performance in romantic comedy films released between 2005 and 2015. As a lasting genre, rom-com, like all forms of media, has the potential to influence society. Gender plays a vital role in the generic template of these films. Because women are the dominant consumers of this genre, what they observe as gender performance is important. This genre has been dissected under the eye of feminism and female gender performance but the changes in masculinity have been largely overlooked. This paper identifies common characteristics in leading men of this decade's rom-coms. After establishing …

Human Herpesvirus 6a Infection And Immunopathogenesis In Humanized Rag2-/-Γc-/- Mice And Relevance To Hiv/Aids And Autoimmunity, Anne Tanner Jun 2016

Human Herpesvirus 6a Infection And Immunopathogenesis In Humanized Rag2-/-Γc-/- Mice And Relevance To Hiv/Aids And Autoimmunity, Anne Tanner

Theses and Dissertations

Human herpesvirus 6A (HHV-6A) has yet to be definitively linked to a specific disease. This is due in part to the ubiquitous nature of the virus. Humanized Rag2-/-γc-/- (Rag-hu) mice were tested to determine if these were a suitable animal model to study the virus. Both cell-free and cell-associated virus was used for infection and both were found to be efficient at infecting the mice. Viral DNA was found in the plasma and cellular blood fractions, bone marrow, lymph node, and thymus, indicating successful infection and propagation of the virus in vivo. The CD3+CD4- population was depleted, while the …

Gender Threat, Male Dominance, And Masculinity: A Perfect Storm For Workplace Aggression, Brooke Elise Dresden Jun 2016

Gender Threat, Male Dominance, And Masculinity: A Perfect Storm For Workplace Aggression, Brooke Elise Dresden

Theses and Dissertations

Higher prevalence of gender harassment has previously been identified in male dominated workforces, but not in academia. Factors such as implicit bias, male dominance, perceived gender threat, and heightened masculinity may increase the likelihood of gender harassment occurring in an academic setting. Two studies investigated this. In Study 1, one hundred seventy-one (92 male, 79 female) participants from male dominated and gender equivalent majors completed an online survey in which their explicit attitudes regarding gender and authority (GAM; see Rudman & Kilianski, 2000), and implicit associations regarding gender and careers (IAT; see Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz, 1998) were measured. Additionally, …

A Semi-Automated Algorithm For Segmenting The Hippocampus In Patient And Control Populations, Nathan Mckay Muncy Jun 2016

A Semi-Automated Algorithm For Segmenting The Hippocampus In Patient And Control Populations, Nathan Mckay Muncy

Theses and Dissertations

Calculating hippocampal volume from Magnetic Resonance (MR) images is an essential task in many studies of neurocognition in healthy and diseased populations. The `gold standard' method involves hand tracing, which is accurate but laborious, requiring expertly trained researchers and significant amounts of time. As such, segmenting large datasets with the standard method is impractical. Current automated pipelines are inaccurate at hippocampal demarcation and volumetry. We developed a semi-automated hippocampal segmentation pipeline based on the Advanced Normalization Tools (ANTs) suite of programs to segment the hippocampus. We applied the semi-automated segmentation pipeline to 70 participant scans (26 female) from groups that …

Heavy Expectations: Reading Pregnancy In The Victorian Novel, Livia Arndal Woods Jun 2016

Heavy Expectations: Reading Pregnancy In The Victorian Novel, Livia Arndal Woods

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation articulates the tendency of Victorian novels to make legible only the pregnant bodies of immodest characters who transgress gendered ideologies while the pregnant bodies of modest characters tend to go undescribed. Tracing the medicalization of pregnancy and childbirth over the course of the long nineteenth century, my chapters demonstrate the function of moralizing narrative conventions in the representation of pregnancy in mid-Victorian novels, of a self-conscious use of free indirect diagnosis in high-Victorian fiction, and a shift at the fin-de-siècle from pregnancy as a signifier of morality to a symptom of unstable minds. The novels I read closely …

Management Of Sclerotium Rolfssi Through Methanolic Leaf Extract Of Alstonia Scholaris (L.) R. Br. And Azadirachta Indica L., Beenish Zia Butt, Nighat Sana, Saba Butt

Journal of Bioresource Management

Sclerotium rolfsii is a polyphagous soil borne fungus infecting more than 500 plant species across the world that is causing vast losses. Although the fungus is soil and seed borne, soil borne inoculum is most vital in infection-causing and syndrome development. Treating soil borne pathogens with fungicides is not reasonable due to very high costs. Environmental hazards are also involved. Therefore, integrated management of pathogens using biological controlling agents is the paramount alternative. Extracts of higher plants have demonstrated a wide range of activity against plant pathogenic organisms. The present research work was carried out to manage the pathogen and …

Human Pattern Recognition In Data Sonification, Charlie Cullen, William Coleman Jun 2016

Human Pattern Recognition In Data Sonification, Charlie Cullen, William Coleman

Papers

Computational music analysis investigates the relevant features required for the detection and classification of musical content, features which do not always directly overlap with musical composition concepts. Human perception of music is also an active area of research, with existing work considering the role of perceptual schema in musical pattern recognition. Data sonification investigates the use of non-speech audio to convey information, and it is in this context that some potential guidelines for human pattern recognition are presented for discussion in this paper. Previous research into the role of musical contour (shape) in data sonification shows that it has a …

Detection Of Melodic Patterns In Automatic Transcriptions Of Flamenco Singing, Aggelos Pikrakis, Nadine Kroher, José-Miguel Díaz-Báñez Jun 2016

Detection Of Melodic Patterns In Automatic Transcriptions Of Flamenco Singing, Aggelos Pikrakis, Nadine Kroher, José-Miguel Díaz-Báñez

Papers

The spontaneous expressive interpretation of melodic templates is a fundamental concept in flamenco music. Consequently, the automatic detection of such patterns in music collections sets the basis for a number of challenging analysis and retrieval tasks. We present a novel algorithm for the automatic detection of manually defined melodies within a corpus of automatic transcriptions of flamenco recordings. We evaluate the performance on the example of five characteristic patterns from the fandango de Valverde style and demonstrate that the algorithm is capable of retrieving ornamented instances of query patterns. Furthermore, we discuss limitations, possible extensions and applications of the proposed …

Biodegradable Magnesium Alloys For Orthopaedic Applications: A Review On Corrosion, Biocompatibility And Surface Modifications., Sankalp Agarwal, James Curtin, Brendan Duffy, Swarna Jaiswal

Articles

Magnesium (Mg) and its alloys have been extensively explored as potential biodegradable implant materials for orthopaedic applications (e.g. Fracture fixation). However, the rapid corrosion of Mg based alloys in physiological conditions has delayed their introduction for therapeutic applications to date. The present review focuses on corrosion, biocompatibility and surface modifications of biodegradable Mg alloys for orthopaedic applications. Initially, the corrosion behaviour of Mg alloys and the effect of alloying elements on corrosion and biocompatibility is discussed. Furthermore, the influence of polymeric deposit coatings, namely sol-gel, synthetic aliphatic polyesters and natural polymers on corrosion and biological performance of Mg and its …

Predicting High School Gpa Using Hexaco Personality Domains And The Secondary School Admission Test, Jeffrey Durso-Finley

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Predictive studies of non-cognitive personality traits and SAT on college GPA are well established, but far less is known about the association between personality traits and comparable secondary school admission tests on secondary school GPA. This study assessed the relationship between the personality domains in the HEXACO: Personality Inventory-Revised (HEXACO: PI-R) inventory and secondary school GPA, while controlling for performance on the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT). The results of the hierarchical regression analysis demonstrated no association between the HEXACO domains and GPA and a significant association between SSAT and GPA. The use of the personality domains in the HEXACO: …

Sexual Harassment In Schools, Charles J. Russo Jun 2016

Sexual Harassment In Schools, Charles J. Russo

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

Eliminating sexual harassment in schools continues to be a national concern. In fact, the Supreme Court has resolved three major cases on this topic, and lower courts continue to resolve a steady stream of disputes. The litigation has moved beyond teacher–student and peer–peer claims to include disputes over harassment because of actual or perceived sexual orientation.

The Observing Self: Diminishing Egocentrism Through Brief Mindfulness Meditation, M Golubickis, Lbg Tan, Jk Falben, Cn Macrae

School of Psychology

Reflecting the egocentrism that permeates contemporary society, people often believe they stand out in the eyes of others (i.e., the spotlight effect), a conviction that is entirely misplaced. Although considerable efforts have focused on elucidating the consequences of the spotlight effect, much less is known about factors that may attenuate this illusory perception. Accordingly, the current study explored the possibility that, via shifts in perspectives on the self (i.e., first person vs. third person), brief mindfulness-based meditation may reduce a future-oriented variant of this bias. The results revealed that, compared with responses in the control conditions (i.e., control meditation or …
