Teaching The Library To Students Of Higher Education, Steven Weiland Oct 2016

Teaching The Library To Students Of Higher Education, Steven Weiland

Charleston Library Conference

The academic library and its digital transformation are ignored in graduate programs of higher education administration, which train a significant number of postsecondary professionals. A course in scholarly communications in the digital age recently introduced at one such program includes an invitation to aspiring administrators to study the contributions of the library to the ways that faculty members are coming to understand and capitalize on new technologies in teaching, research, and career development. The library is represented in the course in its traditional and new roles. It is an essential campus location for attention to what technological change means for …

Balancing Bananas: Collection Assessment Of Patron‐Driven Acquisitions, Gabrielle Wiersma, Rhonda Glazier, Denise Pan, Stephanie Spratt

Charleston Library Conference

The libraries in the University of Colorado (CU) System have been using patron‐driven acquisitions (PDA) to build a shared collection of e‐books for many years. This paper presents our experiences as both early adopters of PDA and libraries with longstanding PDA e‐book programs and describes an analysis of how PDA has impacted collections at each of the libraries in the CU System.

Coastal Wetland Response To Sea‐Level Rise In A Fluvial Estuarine System, Karim Alizad, Scott C. Hagen, James T. Morris, Stephen C. Medeiros, Matthew V. Bilskie, John F. Weishampel

Faculty Publications

Coastal wetlands are likely to lose productivity under increasing rates of sea‐level rise (SLR). This study assessed a fluvial estuarine salt marsh system using the Hydro‐MEM model under four SLR scenarios. The Hydro‐MEM model was developed to apply the dynamics of SLR as well as capture the effects associated with the rate of SLR in the simulation. Additionally, the model uses constants derived from a 2‐year bioassay in the Apalachicola marsh system. In order to increase accuracy, the lidar‐based marsh platform topography was adjusted using Real Time Kinematic survey data. A river inflow boundary condition was also imposed to simulate …

Big Data Blacklisting, Margaret Hu Oct 2016

Big Data Blacklisting, Margaret Hu

Florida Law Review

“Big data blacklisting” is the process of categorizing individuals as administratively “guilty until proven innocent” by virtue of suspicious digital data and database screening results. Database screening and digital watchlisting systems are increasingly used to determine who can work, vote, fly, etc. In a big data world, through the deployment of these big data tools, both substantive and procedural due process protections may be threatened in new and nearly invisible ways. Substantive due process rights safeguard fundamental liberty interests. Procedural due process rights prevent arbitrary deprivations by the government of constitutionally protected interests. This Article frames the increasing digital mediation …
