Protecting Women From Domestic Violence In Assam, India? Evaluating Section 498-A, The Indian Penal Code (Ipc), 1983 Vs The Protection Of Women From Domestic Violence Act (Pwdva), 2005, Deepshikha Carpenter, Polly Vauquline
Journal of International Women's Studies
The institution of marriage is sacred and binding for generations in India; however, in contemporary times, domestic violence is a burning issue as it questions the sanctity of the Indian family system. This paper highlights how domestic violence between ‘husband and wife’, and their interpersonal complexity, is addressed within the legal framework of the Indian Penal Code and the special act of Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act. These Acts operate as custodians for women who are subjugated to spousal violence. The study is located in Kamrup Metro District of Assam as it is the most urbanised district. The …
Prevention Of Sexual Harassment Of Women In The Workplace: Seeking Gender Equality At Work In India, Trishala Singh
Prevention Of Sexual Harassment Of Women In The Workplace: Seeking Gender Equality At Work In India, Trishala Singh
Journal of International Women's Studies
B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, once stated that the measure of progress of a community is the degree of progress achieved by its women. Financial independence and education are two of the most essential sources of women’s progress and empowerment. However, the process of achieving financial independence is often plagued with sexual harassment in the workplace, experienced by most women. This paper is an attempt to analyze the definition and components of sexual harassment, its extent and types. It analyzes the existing Constitutional and legal framework in India for prevention of sexual harassment in the workplaces in …

The Guilty But Mentally Ill Verdict: Assessing The Impact Of Informing Jurors Of Verdict Consequences, Erin Elizabeth Cotrone
The Guilty But Mentally Ill Verdict: Assessing The Impact Of Informing Jurors Of Verdict Consequences, Erin Elizabeth Cotrone
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In response to public opposition to the insanity defense, the Guilty But Mentally Ill(GBMI) verdict was enacted with the intention of limiting the number of insanity acquittals and alleviating the public’s concerns. Prior research suggests, however, that many jurors are making verdict decisions with limited knowledge of the dispositional consequences of the GBMI and NGRI verdicts. Further, jurors may erroneously assume that the GBMI verdict is a compromise between a NGRI and guilty verdict, which mitigates punishment. In reality, the dispositional consequences of a GBMI verdict are equivalent to or more restrictive than a guilty verdict. The current study examined …

Democracy & Education
Hayes, Juarez, and Escoffery-Runnels (2014) analyzed the educational philosophies and pedagogical practices of two educators to understand how personal and professional experiences individually and collectively influenced their approach to teaching. Using oral histories, they presented an argument of why culturally relevant and social justice–oriented teaching has historically been an effective tool in educating students of color, and why it is necessary for teacher preparation in today’s so-called post-racial climate. We suggest that that the education system is merely a microcosm of society, and consequently, we must consider structures larger than individual best practices when discussing culturally relevant teaching. Bridges to …

Multivariate Analysis Of Crime Data Using Spatial Outlier Detection Algorithm, Alok Kumar Singh
Multivariate Analysis Of Crime Data Using Spatial Outlier Detection Algorithm, Alok Kumar Singh
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
A spatial outlier is a spatially referenced object whose non spatial attribute value is significantly different from the corresponding values in its spatial neighbourhood. In other words, a spatial outlier is a local instability, or an extreme observation which deviates significantly in its spatial neighbourhood, but may not be in the entire data set. In this paper, we have applied the well-known mean algorithm for detecting spatial outliers in the multiple attributes state wise crime data and predicted which states need more attention from the government so as to reduce crimes there. We have also done regression analysis between the …

How Do Faculty At The University Of New Mexico Use Humor In Online Teaching, John T. Granato
How Do Faculty At The University Of New Mexico Use Humor In Online Teaching, John T. Granato
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
Humor is a ubiquitous experience that facilitates learning, social coordination and wellbeing. This study examined how the faculty at the University of New Mexico used humor in its online courses. The process involved faculty interviews, a focus group of instructional online designers, questionnaires and documentation to collect data, and then used thematic analysis and code development to arrive at its findings. The study found that the humor pedagogy at the University of New Mexico has fallen into disuse for online courses because of (1) a hesitation (fear) to use humor, (2) fear of what students would think, and (3), hesitation …

The Role Of Recovery From Work In Work Stress-Related Drinking, Brittnie Renae Shepherd
The Role Of Recovery From Work In Work Stress-Related Drinking, Brittnie Renae Shepherd
Dissertations and Theses
Alcohol consumption has been linked to numerous adverse health and well-being outcomes; therefore determining what motivates individuals to drink is of utmost importance. One reason individuals may drink is to cope with work demands and their associated strain. This may be especially relevant for correctional officers (COs) as this occupation has been associated with high levels of job stressors and strain and heavy drinking. Drawing primarily on the job demands-resources and ego depletion models, this study examined how emotional job demands contribute to CO exhaustion and alcohol use. Additionally, interactions between common recovery from work experiences and exhaustion were tested …

Georgia State University Law Review
The Act provides comprehensive reform for offenders entering, proceeding through, and leaving the criminal justice system. It expands accountability courts and pretrial intervention and diversion programs. The Act provides for students incarcerated in Department of Corrections facilities or incarcerated or committed to Department of Juvenile Justice facilities to receive educational services through a state charter school. It also revises matters and procedures related to school discipline and the regaining of driving privileges for those convicted of certain crimes. In addition, the Act clarifies the responsibilities of, and provides for reorganization within, the Board of Community Supervision and Department of Community …

Hb 757 - Public Lawsuits: Protect Religious Freedoms, Phillip Kuck, William Cody Newsome
Georgia State University Law Review
The Act purported to protect the free exercise of religion for religious officials and institutions. Religious officials would not be required to perform marriage ceremonies in violation of their legal right to free exercise of religion. Moreover, faith based organizations would have been permitted to deny employment to individuals whose religious beliefs, or lack thereof, are not in accord with the organization. The Act would have further provided that no business may be required, by legislation, to operate on Saturday or Sunday and that sovereign immunity is waived under certain circumstances.
