Police Contacts And Attitudes Toward Police: A Study Of Race And Policing, Gary Portway
Police Contacts And Attitudes Toward Police: A Study Of Race And Policing, Gary Portway
Undergraduate Review
In the past couple of years, different police departments in the United States have ignited intense criticism for allegedly operating in unethical and unconstitutional ways, namely facilitating the law under racist principles. Since the structure of policing often shifts based on changes within general society, it has become a common standard that policing must match the highest degree of ethics adopted by citizens of the United States. There is a compelling need for more research to be done on the police-citizen relationship. This research studies whether there is disproportionality, with a specific focus on race and ethnicity, in some of …

Renaissance Beauty = Today’S Ugly: Socioculturally Relative Appearance Factors And Attractiveness Judgments, Don Osborn
Renaissance Beauty = Today’S Ugly: Socioculturally Relative Appearance Factors And Attractiveness Judgments, Don Osborn
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
By comparing photos of portraits of the faces of Renaissance courtesans to photos of attractive contemporary women’s faces this study estimates the importance of sociocultural factors in the personal perception of faces. Physical attractiveness is an important causal factor in choosing a sex partner, so the difference between averaged attractiveness judgments, a focus of attractiveness research, and individual attractiveness judgment, most relevant to choosing a sex partner, is important. Except for modesty and faithfulness, 13 normally attractive contemporary models were rated much more positively by college student participants (N = 189) than were eight celebrated Renaissance courtesans, both in …
Colleges And Universities: A Place To Get Away With Rape, Evelin Mac Clay
Colleges And Universities: A Place To Get Away With Rape, Evelin Mac Clay
St. Thomas Law Review
Although Florida is known for having passed the toughest mandatory reporting laws for sexual abuse of children after the Sandusky Penn State scandal, there is no mandatory reporting requirement for young adults who suffer sexual abuse in schools. Additionally, schools do not currently offer programs of rehabilitation for the alleged assailant, and for the most part, the alleged attacker is allowed to continue pursuing his or her studies in the same university, running the risk of having repeat offenders on campus. Part II of this comment will provide a background of the different laws and amendments previously enacted in an …
Sexting And The Fate Of First-Time Offenders In Florida, Bernadette Garcia
Sexting And The Fate Of First-Time Offenders In Florida, Bernadette Garcia
St. Thomas Law Review
This comment addresses the discrepancy posed in Florida's reorganized sexting legislation, Florida Statute section 847.0141, between the sanctions for first-time sexting offending minors and second-time offenders, and the limited resources available to deter minors from recommitting the same offense. To begin, Part II introduces the pervasiveness of sexting among minors, cases of sexting and current sexting legislation in the United States, Florida's stance on sexting between minors, and diversion programming for delinquent youth. Next, Part III addresses Florida's sexting legislation, as well as Florida's different juvenile delinquency prevention programs. Additionally, Part IV analyzes the changes to Florida's sexting statute, Florida's …

Victims, Violence, And Voice: Transitional Justice, Oral History, And Dealing With The Past, Anna Bryson
Victims, Violence, And Voice: Transitional Justice, Oral History, And Dealing With The Past, Anna Bryson
UC Law SF International Law Review
Transitional justice is concerned with the legal and social processes established to deal with the legacy of violence in post-authoritarian and post-conflict contexts. The interview-in different guises, contexts and settings-is at the heart of most transitional justice processes. Prosecutorial mechanisms, truth recovery commissions, assessments for reparations, applications for amnestyall of these and more are fueled by the art of one human being interviewing another and then presenting or "re-presenting" the material recorded, to make it "fit" with the broader transitional goals of a particular institution. Most transitional justice institutions are, in the final analysis, "creatures of law." They are typically …

Note, The Role Of Nonverbal Persuasion In Juror Decision-Making And The Need To Regulate The Trial Consulting Industry, Jaclyn M. D'Esposito
Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy
This Note agrees that the trial consulting industry merits regulation, it departs from the literature inasmuch as it argues that the profession should be regulated with respect to its influence on juror decision-making, as opposed to trial consultants' professional and ethical obligations. To that end, Part II seeks to establish the persuasive effect of nonverbal communication and provides a brief history of the trial consulting industry. Part III continues with an examination into the relevant law with respect to nonverbal communication and trial consulting. In particular, Part III.A.1 considers the various ways in which the law recognizes the role of …
