Does Public Transit Affect Crime? The Addition Of A Bus Line In Cleveland, Morgan Neiss Aug 2016

Does Public Transit Affect Crime? The Addition Of A Bus Line In Cleveland, Morgan Neiss

The Journal of Economics and Politics

Public transportation affects crime rates in neighborhoods surrounding its implementation. It can give criminals easier access to potential targets and decrease the probability of getting caught, or it can give lower-income individuals better access to reliable transportation, which decreases the probability of those individuals getting involved in criminal activity. This paper analyzes available criminal data, property data, and public assistance data for the City of Cleveland to study the effects on property crime rate after the 2008 implementation of a public bus line. The paper's hypothesis is that there is a difference in the mean crime rate before and after …

Can Philanthropy Be Taught?, Lindsey Mcdougle, Danielle Mcdonald, Huafeng Li, Whitney Mcintyre Miller, Chengxin Xu

Education Faculty Articles and Research

In recent years, colleges and universities have begun investing significant resources into an innovative pedagogy known as experiential philanthropy. The pedagogy is considered to be a form of service-learning. It is defined as a learning approach that provides students with opportunities to study social problems and nonprofit organizations and then make decisions about investing funds in them. Experiential philanthropy is intended to integrate academic learning with community engagement by teaching students not only about the practice of philanthropy but also how to evaluate philanthropic responses to social issues. Despite this intent, there has been scant evidence demonstrating that this type …

An Anti-Corruption Bureau’S Inexorable Endeavor: A Study Of Malawi’S Cashgate Scandal, Peter G. Strasser Aug 2016

An Anti-Corruption Bureau’S Inexorable Endeavor: A Study Of Malawi’S Cashgate Scandal, Peter G. Strasser

Washington and Lee Law Review Online

The “Cashgate” scandal has had far-reaching consequences for the southern African nation of Malawi and its people. Western donors suspended budgetary aid—circa $150 million annually—upon learning that civil servants and senior cabinet ministers in former President Joyce Banda’s administration had manipulated the government’s financial management system to embezzle more than $45 million over an eighteen-month period. As a precondition to the resumption of aid, the donors required that the government not only implement financial management reforms but also fully prosecute the perpetrators and recover the stolen assets. The donors’ position solidified when audits of Malawian government ledgers from 2009 to …

Neoliberalism, Finance, And Income Inequality: An Examination Of Affluent Capitalist Democracies, Allen T. Hyde Aug 2016

Neoliberalism, Finance, And Income Inequality: An Examination Of Affluent Capitalist Democracies, Allen T. Hyde

Doctoral Dissertations

In the aftermath of the Great Recession, the dominance of financial markets and their tendency towards crises have resulted in a small global elite capturing huge income increases while many working families have struggled with stagnating wages, job loss, and increasing poverty. At the same time, neoliberal policies, focusing on market deregulation and the decay of social safety nets, have been touted as the way forward despite their potential negative impacts on workers and the poor. In this dissertation, I examine the effects of neoliberalism and financialization on income inequality and distributional dynamics in affluent capitalist democracies in a variety …

Police Stories, Helen A. Anderson Aug 2016

Police Stories, Helen A. Anderson

NULR Online

In this essay, Anderson explores how the police narrative is told in appellate opinions, in light of changing police stories seen in the media. In recent years, video recordings of police violence have upended the traditional narrative of police heroism. The videos have led to discussions of police accountability, yet the controversies surrounding these incidents have also served to highlight the strength of the traditional narrative. Anderson first discusses the prevailing cultural story of the dedicated police officer, as depicted in popular media. Next, Anderson examines how police narratives are conveyed in appellate opinions, through the use of police language, …

Black Spaces In White Places: Toward Black Educational Imagination, Shenita Nicole Mayes Aug 2016

Black Spaces In White Places: Toward Black Educational Imagination, Shenita Nicole Mayes

Dissertations

Using a combination of Critical Race Theory, self-determination, and Black radical imagination as a theoretical framework, this dissertation explores how the features of Black educational imagination – liberatory pedagogy, critically conscious acts, and a revitalized Black teaching force – animate Black school space. These spaces facilitate the re-humanization of Black people, the recognition of counter-narratives as valuable, and the consideration of racial trauma in hiring practices. Each space represents a meaningful recognition of Black radical imagination and therefore inform my actions in the workplace. I argue that a possible path towards liberating Black people from racialized oppression is paved by …

Cultivating Minority Scientists: Undergraduate Research Increases Self-Efficacy And Career Ambitions For Underrepresented Students In Stem, Anthony Carpi, Darcy M. Ronan, Heather M. Falconer, Nathan H. Lents

Publications and Research

In this study, Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) is used to explore changes in the career intentions of students in an undergraduate research experience (URE) program at a large public minority-serving college. Our URE model addresses the challenges of establishing an undergraduate research program within an urban, commuter, underfunded, Minority-Serving Institution (MSI). However, our model reaches beyond a focus on retention and remediation toward scholarly contributions and shifted career aspirations. From a student’s first days at the College to beyond their graduation, we have encouraged them to explore their own potential as scientists in a coordinated, sequential, and self-reflective process. …

The Making Of Modern Egypt: The Egyptian Ulama As Custodians Of Change And Guardians Of Muslim Culture, Marai Boauod Aug 2016

The Making Of Modern Egypt: The Egyptian Ulama As Custodians Of Change And Guardians Of Muslim Culture, Marai Boauod

Dissertations and Theses

Scholarship on the modern history of the Middle East has undergone profound revision in the previous three decades or so. Many earlier perceptions, largely based on modernization theory, have been either contested or modified. However, the perception of the Egyptian ulama (the traditionally-educated, religious Muslim scholars) in academic scholarship remains largely affected by the legacy of hypotheses of the modernization theory. Old assumptions that the Egyptian ulama were submissive to political power and passive players incapable of accommodating, let alone of fathoming, conditions of the modern world, and who chose or were forced to retreat from this world, losing much, …

Brief For The American Association On Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities (Aaidd), And The Arc Of The United States As Amicus Curiae, James W. Ellis, Ann M. Delpha, Carol M. Suzuki, Steven Homer, David Stout, April Land

Faculty Scholarship

As with any field of scientific inquiry, our understanding of the condition of intellectual disability is improved and enhanced over time by continuing, rigorous study and analysis. The scientific study and the diagnosis of intellectual disability involve issues important to scholars and clinicians. But amici believe that there is no need for this Court to become enmeshed in the details and intricacies of those scholarly efforts in order to resolve the instant case and to provide guidance to lower courts in their task of fairly adjudicating cases under Atkins v. Virginia, 536 U.S. 304 (2002). This Court need only affirm …

A Highly Efficient Dual Rotating Disks Photocatalytic Fuel Cell With Wedged Surface Tio2 Nanopore Anode And Hemoglobin Film Cathode, Chen Yang, Yi He, Kan Li, Diwen Ying, Ye Yao, Tiantian Tang, Yalin Wang, Jinping Jia

Publications and Research

In this study, a dual rotating-disk photocatalytic fuel cell using TiO2 on Ti plate with a wedged surface as the anode and hemoglobin (Hb) on graphite as the cathode was investigated and found to show excellent performance of simultaneous organic pollutant degradation and electricity generation. This study is based on a well-developed photocatalytic fuel cell equipped with dual rotating disks for wastewater treatment that we developed previously, and the innovation of this new device is using a hemoglobin on graphite cathode for in situ hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation. The result proved with confidence that H …

Neoliberalism’S Market Morality And Heteroflexibility: Protectionist And Free Market Discourses In Debates For Legal Prostitution, Barbara G. Brents Aug 2016

Neoliberalism’S Market Morality And Heteroflexibility: Protectionist And Free Market Discourses In Debates For Legal Prostitution, Barbara G. Brents

Sociology Faculty Research

In August of 1999, not too long before narratives of sex trafficking began to dominate prostitution policy debates, the residents of a small town in Nevada debated closing the city’s legal brothels. Citizens crowded the hearing hall, holding signs about protecting family and community values. But instead of opposing prostitution, as one might have expected, most public commenters echoed a sign that read, “Pro Family, Pro Prostitution.” Drawing on an analysis of the testimony of the 51 citizens in attendance at that public hearing and ethnographic data gathered in four visits to Evenheart over a one-year period, this paper examines …

Spaces Of Radical Possibility: Resisting Criminality And Carceral Punishment In Contemporary American Prison Literature, Carolina Villalba Aug 2016

Spaces Of Radical Possibility: Resisting Criminality And Carceral Punishment In Contemporary American Prison Literature, Carolina Villalba

Open Access Dissertations

This project looks at the prison narrative as an important sub-genre of contemporary American autobiography, one that reclaims the margin as a space for counter-hegemonic subversion and highlights criminality as a social construct. Comparatively studying Assata Shakur’s Assata: An Autobiography (1987), Leonard Peltier’s Prison Writings: My Life Is My Sun Dance (1999), and Jimmy Santiago Baca’s A Place to Stand (2001), I consider how these works manipulate the literary representation of imprisonment to establish a correlation between space and power, and to transform physical, mental, and spiritual confinement into a source of autonomy. I also examine how these works negotiate …
