Holistic Approach: Paradigm Shift In The Research Agenda For Digitalisation Of Healthcare In Sub-Saharan Africa, Tadeusz K. Bara-Slupski
Holistic Approach: Paradigm Shift In The Research Agenda For Digitalisation Of Healthcare In Sub-Saharan Africa, Tadeusz K. Bara-Slupski
The African Journal of Information Systems
Despite significant resources employed in the digitalisation agenda in the healthcare sector in Sub-Saharan Africa, the transformative impact of information and communication technologies has not been realised. This article makes two contributions towards developing an understanding of this failure. First, it provides a review of a rich body of academic literature and practitioner accounts regarding barriers to digitalisation and organises them using an established framework. Second, recognising the continuing struggle that digitalisation presents, it proposes a paradigmatic shift in thinking about barriers to digitalisation and suggests the existence of a more fundamental barrier related to inappropriate incentives within the international …

Opportunities For And Barriers To Renewable Energy Outreach In Extension: A Mixed-Methods Needs Assessment, Blake H. Thomas, Roslynn G. Brain
Journal of Extension
This article illuminates the far-reaching applications of renewable energy programming for Extension's rural and urban clientele. An online survey of attendees of the inaugural National Extension Energy Summit revealed the need for increased energy programming in Extension. Following survey analysis, focus group interviews were conducted at the National Extension Sustainability Summit to determine the best way to address the reported need for energy programming. The results provide readers with an understanding of how renewable energy programming can expand the role and relevancy of Extension in the 21st century.

Conservation As Mutualism: A Case Study Of Thulo Syafru, Jennifer S. Brady
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This study examined the opinions, perceptions, and knowledge of residents of Thulo Syafru, a small village in the buffer zone of Langtang National Park, Nepal, regarding conservation efforts spearheaded by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation and the World Wide Fund for Nature. 26 community members were interviewed along with key figures in community leadership and the two aforementioned organizations. Thulo Syafru is an essential location for red panda conservation, leading to many conservation efforts being focused in the area. Overall, people expressed very positive opinions regarding red pandas and their protection, positive attitudes about conservation, and appreciation …
Variation In Green Roof Storage Capacity, Associated Drivers, And Implications For Stormwater Management In Portland, Oregon, Melecio Estrella
Variation In Green Roof Storage Capacity, Associated Drivers, And Implications For Stormwater Management In Portland, Oregon, Melecio Estrella
University Honors Theses
Greens roofs, also known as ecoroofs or living roofs, provide numerous ecosystem services and are becoming widely integrated into urban stormwater management systems. Despite a long and robust history of green roof projects in Portland, Oregon, there is a distinct lack of research on in situ performance. This thesis addressed this gap by investigating the hydrologic performance of five green roofs in Portland for a time period spanning November through February. Despite difficulty with the sensor calibrations, our analysis of moisture content data from these roofs revealed variation in: (1) total evapotranspiration, which serves as a proxy for total stormwater …
Community Schools: A Public Health Opportunity, Catherine Diamond
Community Schools: A Public Health Opportunity, Catherine Diamond
Dissertations and Theses
Community schools link students, families, and communities to educate children and strengthen neighborhoods. They have become a popular model for education in many U.S. cities in part because they build on community assets and address multiple determinants of educational disadvantage. Since community schools seek to have an impact on populations, not just the students enrolled, they provide an opportunity to improve community health. It has been proposed that community schools influence the health and education of the area residents through three pathways: building trust, establishing norms, and linking people to networks and services. However, no research has been published exploring …
The Importance Of Civic And Social Engagement In Minority Communities, Lisa A. Jones
The Importance Of Civic And Social Engagement In Minority Communities, Lisa A. Jones
Journal of Family Strengths
Participation in civic and social engagement among community members promotes community growth and strengthens communities and schools. Such engagement begins with creating and maintaining a sense of trust among all stakeholders. Research indicates that participation in civic and social engagement activities in minority communities depended on various factors but the two most common factors are economics and social capital (McBride, Sherraden, and Pritzker, 2004; Nath, 2012; Zani & Barrett, 2012). While there is an awareness of the importance of actively engaging in civic and social activities to support our communities, limited players in this endeavor are the youth. Thus, schools …

Communities Of Opportunity: Pursuing A Housing Policy Agenda To Achieve Equity And Opportunity In The Face Of Post-Recession Challenges, Kalima Rose, Teddy Kỳ-Nam Miller
Trotter Review
Where we live directly impacts our ability to achieve our full potential. Access to good schools, quality jobs, reliable transportation, and healthy food is fundamental to achieving communities of opportunity. Unfortunately, communities of color, and urban black communities in particular, are disproportionately residing in neighborhoods locked out of opportunity, or disproportionately burdened by housing costs —spending over half of their income on housing. In 2015, PolicyLink undertook a research project to understand the changing post-recession housing landscape, to characterize the forces that were undermining housing security for communities of color, and to characterize the policy opportunities that could address the …

Home-Based Edible Gardening: Urban Residents’ Motivations And Barriers, Tenley M. Conway
Home-Based Edible Gardening: Urban Residents’ Motivations And Barriers, Tenley M. Conway
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Home-based edible gardening is defined as individual households growing food on their own property. In the Global North, home-based edible gardens have recently been identified as an important part of urban sustainability initiatives, given the relatively large area of residential yard space available for food production in most cities. Yet basic questions around households’ decisions to participate in home-based edible gardening have not been fully examined, making the likelihood of meeting home-based gardens’ potential unclear. This study explores the motivations and barriers associated with home-based edible gardening through in-depth interviews with growers and non-growers. The study area is four neighborhoods …
Urban Agriculture As Embedded In The Social And Solidarity Economy Basel: Developing Sustainable Communities, Isidor Wallimann
Urban Agriculture As Embedded In The Social And Solidarity Economy Basel: Developing Sustainable Communities, Isidor Wallimann
Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration
The Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) is a viable strategy in dealing with some contemporary problems known both in industrial and developing countries. Addressed is how local populations could reach certain objectives and satisfy certain needs using techniques characteristic of SSE and, thus, carve out a social and economic space of their own vis-à-vis anonymous markets, global actors, local and national elites. Illustrated further is this strategy on the example of Urban Agriculture Basel, a unit of the Social Economy Basel. Within this self governed space, it is suggested, a path can be laid for the necessary transition towards local, …
Eroding Planning Powers Leaves Us At The Mercy Of The Market, Lorcan Sirr
Eroding Planning Powers Leaves Us At The Mercy Of The Market, Lorcan Sirr
Media
There is little evidence to show that the planning system in Ireland hinders the delivery of housing, yet it is regularly blamed for preventing developers from building. Consistent with our political tradition of “anecdote as fact”, no credible evidence is ever presented to prove these allegations that the planning system—and indeed, planners themselves—are a blockage. The elephant in the room is, of course, owners sitting on land with planning permission who won’t build, or who won’t sell if they can’t afford to build. Critics of the planning system are fewin reality, yet they are vocal and influential. Diluting the system …

Parallel Mutations Result In A Wide Range Of Cooperation And Community Consequences In A Two-Species Bacterial Consortium, Sarah Douglas, Lon Chubiz, William Harcombe, F. Ytreberg, Christopher Marx
Biology Department Faculty Works
Multi-species microbial communities play a critical role in human health, industry, and waste remediation. Recently, the evolution of synthetic consortia in the laboratory has enabled adaptation to be addressed in the context of interacting species. Using an engineered bacterial consortium, we repeatedly evolved cooperative genotypes and examined both the predictability of evolution and the phenotypes that determine community dynamics. Eight Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strains evolved methionine excretion sufficient to support growth of an Escherichia coli methionine auxotroph, from whom they required excreted growth substrates. Non-synonymous mutations in metA, encoding homoserine trans-succinylase (HTS), were detected in each evolved S. enterica …

Emergence And Growth Of Community Supported Enterprises, Norman Walzer, Jessica Sandoval
Emergence And Growth Of Community Supported Enterprises, Norman Walzer, Jessica Sandoval
Reports, Whitepapers, Articles, and Other Publications
Local development agencies organize groups of residents to invest in business ventures commonly known as Community Supported Enterprises or Businesses. These ventures are often motivated by the potential loss of a grocery store, restaurant, or other establishment considered vital to quality of life in the community. Motivated by a need to maintain or build social capital, a group of residents pool their investments to purchase a building or on-going establishment and then hire an operator to manage the business with returns paid to the organizing agency. These agencies may be a nonprofit, LLC, Cooperative or other type of organization. Emergence …

Reinventing Social Work Education And Service Delivery In Rural Areas: An Interdisciplinary Model For Serving Vulnerable Populations, Wayne R. Moore, Fran Pearson, John C. Rife, K. Jay Poole, Lelia S. Moore, Antonia M. Reaves
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
This article presents an interprofessional case study approach to serving the social service and health needs of vulnerable persons living rural communities. This project, the Congregational Social Work Education Initiative (CSWEI), is funded by a health care foundation. Persons in rural areas are often at risk for poverty, homelessness and lack of access to needed health and social services. The case study demonstrates the opportunities for collaboration between professional social work, religiously affiliated organizations (RAOs) and nursing in order to reduce health and mental health disparities among residents in rural areas.

Teaching Macro Practice Through The Use Of Experiential Instruction And Collaboration: A Formula To Create Sustainable Community Resources, Timothy O. Davis Ph.D., Kendal L. Carswell
Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal
While delivering an organizations and communities class to a cohort of students in an outlying rural area, a social work program explored ways to educate students effectively while simultaneously exploring and devising strategies to fill local gaps in community services. The project utilized evidence-based learning strategies focusing on experiential instruction and collaboration with local community agencies. Using aspects of the flipped classroom as well as service learning, the course was particularly interested in engaging with community stakeholders to identify issues arising from the realities of a rural service environment. Students identified a project, worked with community partners, and delivered recommendations …

Last week, Dublin city council (DCC) resolved a dispute with its own councillors over the regeneration of O’Devaney Gardens, a council estate behind Arbour Hill in Dublin. Named after Bishop O’Devaney, who was hanged at Arbour Hill in 1612 as a friend of Tyrone rebel chief Hugh O’Neill, O’Devaney Gardens is a 1950s corporation-built estate of 300 flats in 12 (originally 13) blocks.
