Journal of Civil Law Studies
The Federal Constitution of 1988 reinstated the democratic rule of law in Brazil. Based on fundamental rights, the “Citizen’s Constitution” shaped the model of a welfare State, which objectives consist in the construction of a free, just and solidary society, the eradication of poverty and substandard living conditions and the promotion of the well-being of all, without prejudice as to origin, race, sex, color, age and any other forms of discrimination. From this context, the constitutional idealization of family democracy emerges, specifically represented in this paper by the recognition of civil union be-tween people of the same sex as family …

The Impact Of Burroughs's Naked Lunch On Chester's The Exquisite Corpse, Jaap Van Der Bent
The Impact Of Burroughs's Naked Lunch On Chester's The Exquisite Corpse, Jaap Van Der Bent
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "The Impact of Burroughs's Naked Lunch on Chester's The Exquisite Corpse" Jaap van der Bent posits that although Alfred Chester was critical of most Beat writing, in Tangier in the early 1960s he associated not only with Paul Bowles, but also with William S. Burroughs. Van der Bent argues that The Exquisite Corpse, the experimental novel Chester wrote in Tangier, shows the influence of the city's geography and especially the content and form of Burroughs's Naked Lunch.

In order to deal with the forensic implications of social networks, current research on both digital forensics and social networks need to be incorporated and understood. This will help digital forensics investigators to predict, detect and even prevent …

The Price Of Being A Trans-Atlantic Hero: Struggles Of A Migrant Mother, Erica C. Davies

Migration is a huge part of Filipino culture. Economic hardship often force some Filipinos to leave their home and their families behind in order to provide a sustainable life. This decision has resulted in over 2 million OFWs, or Overseas Filipino Workers, around the globe. OFWs are local heroes, often braving long distances, sub-par working conditions, and long work hours away from their families for months or years at a time to make sure they are properly taken care of. In a world where the 9 to 5 is seen as common practice, the stories of two women show the …

'Whose Goals Am I Meeting?' Policy And Practice Dilemmas In Adult Basic Education (Abe) In The Era Of Accountability, Alma Hallulli Biba
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
For the last two decades, federal legislation and Massachusetts’ state ABE policies have linked adult learners’ educational outcomes to performance systems and accountability requirements. These outcomes, represented as ‘goals’, reflect an emphasis on return-on-investment strategies and outcome-based accountability measures. Greatest emphasis is placed on that subset of adult learners’ goals that are easily measured, attainable, and that are associated with public outcomes. This dissertation, in contrast, seeks to understand the goal setting process from the perspective of learners and local ABE stakeholders. Using a novel, mixed-method approach, this dissertation presents ABE learners’ goal setting as a decision problem in order …

This study examined the impact of a teacher-lead professional development program based on the Instructional Talk-Through (ITT) model, created to address the unique needs of high-performing veteran teachers. Focusing on the professional development of veteran teachers is not a regular occurrence in schools and it is our opinion that these teachers possess a wealth of knowledge that heretofore has not been utilized to improve their overall skill set. The program was designed to capitalize on peer coaching, professional learning communities, classroom observation, and experiential knowledge while incorporating the unique strengths and abilities of these teachers in a collaborative environment.
Micro-Meso-Macro Comparative Law: An Essay On The Methodology Of Comparative Law, Alessandro Romano
Micro-Meso-Macro Comparative Law: An Essay On The Methodology Of Comparative Law, Alessandro Romano
Chicago-Kent Journal of International and Comparative Law
There are strong analogies between the quest for a methodology of comparative law and the broader debate on the epistemology of social and natural sciences. In this vein, after having explored the dispute between holists and reductionists, I argue that the dichotomy between micro and macro comparative law ought to be abandoned. Building on the insights of social theory, I introduce a specific framework to bridge the two levels of enquiry through a meso analysis. This framework is applied to investigate the robustness of the findings of the legal origin theory.

Assembling Barbarity, Dirt, And Violence: A Provisional Note On Food And Social Analysis, Macario B. Lacbawan
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The key to understanding any social phenomenon is to follow how actors tread the social landscape and describe how they form groups, fuse meanings, and create associations with different frames. In this paper, I employ Bruno Latour’s reconceptualization of assemblage to trace how NGOs and other actors create assemblages by fusing or defusing dog-eating with discourses on dirt, epidemic, and human rights. More specifically, NGOs such as LinisGobyerno and Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) produce assemblages that align dog-eating with sanitation, violence, and epidemic. Conversely, supporters of the practice try to invert these claims by foregrounding dog-meat consumption as an entitlement …
