When The ‘Escape Ends Responsibility Of The Ioc And Fifa At The Intersection Of Sport Law And Human Rights, Trista Turley Sep 2016

When The ‘Escape Ends Responsibility Of The Ioc And Fifa At The Intersection Of Sport Law And Human Rights, Trista Turley

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

This note argues that major governing bodies of international sport should and can assume a greater role in the field of human rights by pursuing enhanced status as an actor under international law, facilitating a treaty between nation states with the cooperation of UNESCO, or some combination of both. The note focuses on the IOC and FIFA—the two largest and arguably most sophisticated governing organizations in international sport. However, the note also carries implications for smaller organizations such as the Commonwealth Games Family (CGF) and the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO). Furthermore, the note only addresses issues that fit neatly …

Religious Tourism In The Hill Of Tepexpan: A New Research Approach - From Dedifferentiation, Víctor Mora-Torres, Rocío Serrano-Barquín, Héctor Favila-Cisneros, Carolina Serrano-Barquín

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This theoretical and methodological paper presents research undertaken to comprehend the social dynamic of religious tourism in a traditional sanctuary located in the Hill of Tepexpan, Mexico. Visitor experience, as tourist or pilgrim, has been little studied in Mexican religious tourism literature, which has focused mainly on quantitative and economics aspects. For this reason, a more holistic and comprehensive way to understand the phenomenon is desirable, especially in destinations that receive a variety of visitors with different practices and motivations.

The Tepexpan Hill Sanctuary has been a sacred place since Colonial times for two ethnic groups: Mazahuas and Otomíes. Their …

Pilgrimage And Its Dual Functions In Iranian Shiitsm, Zahra Khoshk Jan Sep 2016

Pilgrimage And Its Dual Functions In Iranian Shiitsm, Zahra Khoshk Jan

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Salvation is the main concern not only for theistic religions but also for atheistic ones, therefore, all of them try to offer doctrines for achieving both salvation and redemption in this world or in another world. Followers of the Twelver Shiism strongly believe in salvation through the Imam. Imamat and Imam, do not just refer to a special person, more than that, they involve a spiritual / worldly doctrine toward a complete and multilateral salvation, and also socio-political leadership. One of the important parts of this doctrine that involves spiritual / worldly salvation is intercession via religious rituals like praying, …

Prospective And Dyadic Associations Between Expectant Parents’ Prenatal Hormone Changes And Postpartum Parenting Outcomes, Robin S. Edelstein, William J. Chopik, Darby E. Saxbe, Britney M. Wardecker, Amy C. Moors, Onawa P. Labelle Sep 2016

Prospective And Dyadic Associations Between Expectant Parents’ Prenatal Hormone Changes And Postpartum Parenting Outcomes, Robin S. Edelstein, William J. Chopik, Darby E. Saxbe, Britney M. Wardecker, Amy C. Moors, Onawa P. Labelle

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

During the transition to parenthood, both men and women experience hormone changes that are thought to promote parental care. Yet very few studies have explicitly tested the hypothesis that prenatal hormone changes are associated with postpartum parenting behavior. In a longitudinal study of 27 first-time expectant couples, we assessed whether prenatal hormone changes predicted self and partner-reported parenting outcomes at three months postpartum. Expectant fathers showed prenatal declines in testosterone and estradiol, and larger declines in these hormones predicted larger contributions to household and infant care tasks postpartum. Women whose partners showed larger testosterone declines also reported receiving more support …

Play The Cards, Roll The Dice – The Integration Of Casinos Within Asian Tourism Destination Development Strategy, Glenn Mccartney Sep 2016

Play The Cards, Roll The Dice – The Integration Of Casinos Within Asian Tourism Destination Development Strategy, Glenn Mccartney

UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal

New Asian casino destinations continue to emerge and expand their gambling options. The historical rhetoric of being a panacea to economic and tourism woes continues to dominant decades later. Yet the excessive regulatory environments and taxation regimes by authorities on the casino industry are unlike those applied to other destination tourism products. Once the domain of the United States in the 1990s with entertainment capitals such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the proliferation of legalised casino gaming is now accentuated in Asia in destinations such as Macao, Korea, Singapore and the Philippines. As a tourism product, this article highlights …

An Empirical Evaluation Of Developmental Networks And Mentoring Practices Effect On Doctoral Science Training, Jorge L. Aviles Sep 2016

An Empirical Evaluation Of Developmental Networks And Mentoring Practices Effect On Doctoral Science Training, Jorge L. Aviles

Theses and Dissertations

This study aimed at examining the impact of doctoral mentoring practices (DMP) and of developmental networks (DN) on the doctoral training practices (DTP) of students enrolled in selected elite doctoral science programs in three East Asian countries. It focuses on these social aspects that potentially enhance and/or diversify training practices that develop scientific occupational competencies. The recognition that mentoring during career development may be available from a variety of individuals beyond the traditional dyadic mentor-mentee relationship led this study to examine the impact of students’ developmental networks. The approach taken is novel in that the developmental network typology has yet …

Fundamental Researcher Attributes: Reflections On Ways To Facilitate Participation In Community Psychology Doctoral Dissertation Research, Renato M. Liboro, Robb Travers

Psychology Faculty Research

As novice researchers, Community Psychology doctoral students encounter fresh challenges when they attempt to facilitate participation by members of the community in their dissertation projects. This article presents the merit in adopting fundamental researcher attributes, which have been described in published academic literature as personal characteristics that facilitate participation by members of the community in research studies. The value of these researcher attributes is exemplified in the discussion of one of the author’s experiences in the early stages of his dissertation research process. This article also presents new researcher attributes for facilitating participation by community members that the author recognised …

Repertoire, Framing And Visions : The Occupy Movement In Hong Kong, Ho Man Leung Sep 2016

Repertoire, Framing And Visions : The Occupy Movement In Hong Kong, Ho Man Leung

Lingnan Theses

The Occupy Movement is one of the most significant civic events in recent Hong Kong History. This thesis is an attempt to make a comprehensive understanding of the movement by analyzing the actual movement activities and illustrating occupiers’ justification of actions. Three major issues are of concern here. First, what actually happened during the movement? Second, why did the occupiers join the movement? Lastly, how did the occupiers justify their actions during the movement? In this regard, the concepts of repertoire, framing and vision, will be employed to guide this study. Considering the three main factions of the movement, including …

Scientific Ambidexterity And Doctoral Mentoring: Does Academics’ Involvement In Commercial Science Influence Mentoring In East-Asian Programs?, Maria Del Benavides Sep 2016

Scientific Ambidexterity And Doctoral Mentoring: Does Academics’ Involvement In Commercial Science Influence Mentoring In East-Asian Programs?, Maria Del Benavides

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is in the area of sociology of science. It carries the legacy of Robert K. Merton by addressing two concepts -- scientific ambidexterity (SA) and doctoral science mentoring -- germane to the knowledge production process that are increasingly manifested in contemporary academic science. In regards to SA, I focus on two axes of activities that academics are increasingly expected to engage in and balance: the axis of research collaboration, and of techno-scientific productivity. Each axis represents the tension between the demands of academic science and that of commercial science as experienced by academics. To advance understanding of SA’s …

Emergency Medicine Articles

INTRODUCTION: A motor vehicle collision (MVC) is one of the most common life-threatening events experienced by individuals living in the USA. While most individuals recover following MVC, a significant proportion of individuals develop adverse post-traumatic sequelae such as post-traumatic stress disorder or persistent musculoskeletal pain. Adverse post-traumatic sequelae are common, morbid and costly public health problems in the USA and other industrialised countries. The pathogenesis of these disorders following MVC remains poorly understood. In the USA, available data suggest that African-Americans experience an increased burden of adverse post-traumatic sequelae after MVC compared to European Americans, but to date no studies …
