When you say that my accent is interesting Are you trying to get to know me or assign me an identity? Is the nopal que tengo en la frente a symbol too ambiguous to fully convince you? Sanitation As A Measure Of Development: A Rationale For Its Use, With Global And Subnational Analyses Of Its Factors, Catherine J. Harthorn Sep 2016

Sanitation As A Measure Of Development: A Rationale For Its Use, With Global And Subnational Analyses Of Its Factors, Catherine J. Harthorn

Student Theses and Dissertations

Sanitation is an ideal non-monetary measure of broadly distributed development. Compared to other global development indicators, it reduces volatility, resolves equivalency, achieves closer concept fidelity, and features greater data availability. Factors affecting rates of sanitation in cross-national comparisons include democracy (with less influence in the developing world), fewer restrictions to political freedoms or civil liberties, better governance, communism, greater wealth, less poverty, urbanization, population density, and slower population growth. Factors affecting change in sanitation rates include microfinance activity. Subnational factors which influence rates of sanitation in India are wealth and communism. The factors affecting the change in sanitation in India …

Overall Declines In Child Poverty Mask Relatively Stable Rates Across States, Andrew P. Schaefer, Jess Carson, Marybeth J. Mattingly Sep 2016

Overall Declines In Child Poverty Mask Relatively Stable Rates Across States, Andrew P. Schaefer, Jess Carson, Marybeth J. Mattingly

Carsey Publications

In this brief, authors Andrew Schaefer, Jessica Carson, and Marybeth Mattingly use Census data released on September 15, 2016, from the American Community Survey--the only regular source for estimating yearly child poverty rates at, and below, the state level--to examine child poverty rates across the United States by place type, region, and state. They report that between 2014 and 2015, child poverty declined nationwide across rural areas, suburbs, and cities. As before, cities had the highest child poverty, followed closely by rural areas. Suburbs had the lowest rates. In thirteen states, child poverty declined since 2014; only Mississippi saw an …

Validating A Taxonomy Of Nursing Practice For Oncology Clinical Trial Nurses, Michelle A. Purdom Sep 2016

Validating A Taxonomy Of Nursing Practice For Oncology Clinical Trial Nurses, Michelle A. Purdom

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Confusion exists on the roles and contribution of oncology nurses in the care of cancer clinical trial patients. Quantitative evidence of their roles and contributions is lacking in the literature and job descriptions vary. A study to fill this gap examined the dimensions of nursing practice and evaluated tasks performed by three groups of United States oncology nurses who practice in research settings: direct care providers, study coordinators, and those with a dual role of both coordinator and direct care provider. The study tested a theoretical, five-dimensional model of nursing practice by using the Clinical Research Nurse Role Delineation survey. …

Pragmatism Or Prestige? Recessionary Strategies Of State Comprehensive Universities, Michael J. Zeig Sep 2016

Pragmatism Or Prestige? Recessionary Strategies Of State Comprehensive Universities, Michael J. Zeig

Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University

Higher education institutions face growing challenges including declining state appropriations (State Higher Education Executive Officers Association, 2014), a decreasing number of high school graduates (Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, 2012), and increasing competition in the form of online and for-profit education providers (Bowen, 2013). State comprehensive universities (SCUs), as institutions often considered to be “stuck in the middle” between major research universities and smaller niche colleges, are particularly susceptible to these challenges (Henderson, 2009; Skinner & Miller, 2013). This has led many scholars to indicate that colleges and universities can no longer be all things to all people and …

Blended And Asynchronous Course Effectiveness In First-Year Composition: A Case Study, Daniel Reardon Sep 2016

Blended And Asynchronous Course Effectiveness In First-Year Composition: A Case Study, Daniel Reardon

Teacher-Scholar: The Journal of the State Comprehensive University

As one campus of a four-campus state system, Missouri University of Science and Technology has been searching for ways to effectively integrate online courses across the curriculum. This search originally came in the form of a directive from higher administration, on both the university and system levels. Therein lay the first difficulty for us with online instruction. Specifically, online instruction’s value may be very different for university system administration than it is for each campus, each department, and each instructor. For many SCUs facing drastically reduced state funding, greater competition for student enrollment, and increased operating costs, online instruction may …

It’S Not Just What You Know, But Who You Know: Social Capital Theory And Academic Library Outreach, Elizabeth Ramsey Sep 2016

It’S Not Just What You Know, But Who You Know: Social Capital Theory And Academic Library Outreach, Elizabeth Ramsey

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

The concept of social capital and its contribution to success and well-being in a variety of settings has potential for academic library outreach. Research has found that those with extensive and varied networks of social relationships can benefit in myriad ways, including academic and professional achievement. A connection has also been found between lower levels of social capital and negative effects on individuals as well as communities generally. Academic libraries are strategically positioned to enhance the social capital of their users, effecting positive differences in engagement, retention, and success after graduation.

Partisanship In The Media: A Comprehensive Look At The History And Potential For Bias In News Media, Henry Ferguson

Pop Culture Intersections

On July 10, 2016 Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump tweeted, “The media is so dishonest. If I make a statement, they twist it and turn it to make it sound bad or foolish. They think the public is stupid!”[1] On August 10, 2016 Trump’s campaign released a statement titled, “Trump Campaign Statement on Dishonest Media.”[2] The statement itself had nothing to do with media dishonesty, but rather the statement clarified some remarks the candidate made during a speech about gun control. Both of these statements were made due to Trump’s feeling that his words had been twisted and …
