The need for high quality, sustainable Computer Science Education (CSE) professional development (PD) at the grades K-12 level is essential to the success of the global CSE initiatives. This study investigates the use of Social Network Analysis (SNA) to identify emergent teacher leaders within a high quality CSE PD program. The CSE PD program was designed and implemented through collaboration between the computer science and teacher education units at a Midwestern metropolitan university in North America. A unique feature of this specific program is in the intentional development of a social network. This study discusses the importance of social networks, …

State Sponsored Health Insurance And State Economic And Employment Growth, Liam Malloy, Shanna Pearson-Merkowitz, Irwin Morris
State Sponsored Health Insurance And State Economic And Employment Growth, Liam Malloy, Shanna Pearson-Merkowitz, Irwin Morris
Economics Faculty Publications
While there is a clear relationship between better health and better economic outcomes, the effects of increasing health insurance on the economy remain understudied. We employ two datasets, one on health insurance coverage in the contiguous 48 U.S. states and one for countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, to model the effect of expanding health insurance on state and country economic and employment growth over the last two decades. We find that increased health insurance coverage of the working age population, especially through government programs like Medicaid, is associated with faster gross domestic product and employment growth. …

Brian Foster knows his way around the University of Mississippi. In fact, he won the Center's Peter Aschoff Award for the best paper on Southern music in 2011 with his BA Honors thesis, "Crank Dat Soulja Boy: Understanding Black Male Hip-Hop Aspirations in Rural Mississippi." This fall, the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology welcome him back as a new assistant professor of sociology and Southern Studies. Foster returns to the university from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned his MA and began his PhD work. Prior …

In the wake of some recent protests taking place all across the country, I am reminded of the very personal and public consequences that result from various reactions. By definition, protest means "a statement or action expressing disapproval of or objection to something."

Panel: Brown University Redux - Effects Of Unionization On Graduate Student Employees: Faculty-Student Relations, Academic Freedom, And Pay, Sean Rogers, Adrienne Eaton, Paula Voos
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
In cases involving unionization of graduate student research and teaching assistants at private U.S. universities,
the National Labor Relations Board has, at times, denied collective bargaining rights on the presumption that
unionization would harm faculty--student relations and academic freedom. Using survey data collected from
PhD students in five academic disciplines across eight public U.S. universities, the authors compare
represented and non-represented graduate student employees in terms of faculty--student relations, academic
freedom, and pay. Unionization does not have the presumed negative effect on student outcomes, and in some
cases has a positive effect. Union-represented graduate student employees report higher levels of …

Administrative Narratives, Human Rights, And Public Ethics: The Detroit Water-Shutoff Case, Richard K. Ghere
Political Science Faculty Publications
This inquiry focuses specifically on administrative (local official) narratives that speak to contentious issue contexts of social conflict. Specifically, it draws upon a theoretical connection between hermeneutics and the sociology of knowledge to interpret narrative passages of local officials and others related to a contentious public action—the Detroit Water and Sewerage District’s stepped-up water-discontinuation efforts (2014 and 2015) that left thousands of inner-city residents with “delinquent” accounts and no access to water service. Selected narratives from this case are interpreted on the basis of their literary and social functions. The interpretations support a subsequent determination of whether and how the …

Where Is The North Pole? An Election-Year Survey On Global Change, Lawrence C. Hamilton
Carsey Publications
To explore public knowledge and perceptions about climate change, University of New Hampshire researchers conducted the first Polar, Environment, and Science (POLES) survey in August 2016. A random sample of U.S. adults were asked for their views regarding science, climate change, sources of information, current problems, and possible solutions. In addition, the survey tested basic geographical knowledge related to polar regions, such as whether the United States has a significant population living in the Arctic, and what respondents know about the location of the North Pole.
In this brief, author Lawrence Hamilton reports that fewer than one in five Americans …
