Flag Politics In Ethiopia And The Ethio-American Diaspora, Goshu W. Tefera, A. Peter Castro Ph.D.
Flag Politics In Ethiopia And The Ethio-American Diaspora, Goshu W. Tefera, A. Peter Castro Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
Flags hold “rich symbolic and political connotations,” yet the examination of their use has been “relatively neglected in research on nationalism” (Eriksen, 2007, p. 1-2). Our study explores the transnational politics of Ethiopia’s national flag, exploring its manifestation within the EthioAmerican community in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, where the largest Ethiopian diaspora population in the United States resides. We also examine the historical roots of Ethiopian flag politics within Ethiopia’s historical political economy. The country’s well-known imperial flag, containing the emblem of the Lion of Judah against green, yellow, and red stripes, emerged by the late 19th century as …

Recent Trends In Puerto Rican Electoral And Civic Engagement In The United States, Carlos Vargas-Ramos
CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies
PresiThe political participation and civic engagement rates of Puerto Ricans in the United States are lower than those of the population as a whole and specific subpopulation groups (e.g., non- Hispanic whites and blacks), but they are comparable to those of other Latinos. 70 60 50 40 30 20 2000* 2002 2004* 2006 2008* 2010 2012* 2014 puerto ricans non-hispanics hispanics total These facts are not new, but rather they follow a decades-long pattern (Fraga et al. 2010; De La Garza et al. 1992; Calvo and Rosenstone 1989; Vargas-Ramos 2003). Military Service: Migration And A Path To Middle Class Status, Harry Franqui-Rivera
CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies
The role of military service in spreading the Puerto Rican diaspora is an understudied phenomenon of relevance for understanding the Puerto Rican migration and its settlement patterns in the U.S. Active duty military personnel, veterans, and their families have dispersed the Puerto Rican population beyond what has been considered as traditional centers of Puerto Rican migration. New York, Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts continue to host the largest populations of Puerto Ricans stateside. But large Puerto Rican communities have formed and are thriving around military bases in el Nuevo South (the former original confederate states), the Midwest, and Western …

Puerto Rican Population Grows 2% In 2015, Center For Puerto Rican Studies
CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies
The Puerto Rican population grew in the U.S. from 5.2 million in 2014 to 5.3 million in 2015. Recently released data from the 2015 American Community Survey showed Puerto Ricans (2%) and Latinos overall (2.2%) were among the fastest growing population groups in the United States, compared to non-Hispanic blacks (0.84%), non-Hispanic whites (0.06%), and the total U.S. population (0.80%).

"Come Now Let Us Reason Together": Restoring Religious Freedom In America And Abroad, John Witte Jr, Joel A. Nichols
"Come Now Let Us Reason Together": Restoring Religious Freedom In America And Abroad, John Witte Jr, Joel A. Nichols
Notre Dame Law Review
American religious freedom used to be “taken for granted.” It’s now “up
for grabs.” So writes distinguished religious liberty scholar Paul Horwitz.
Until a generation ago, the opposite was true.
So matters stood a generation ago. But in the ensuing years, these special
legislative protections of religious freedom have come under increasing
attack.
