Leadership Practice, Organizational Culture And New Managerialism: Strengths, Challenges, Variations And Contradictions In Three Children's Service Agencies, Rosemary E. Vito

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Abstract

The purpose of this research study was to explore how social work leaders conceptualized and practiced leadership and how their leadership practice influenced, and was shaped by, organizational culture. The relevance and viability of a participatory leadership approach and a collaborative learning culture were also explored. As well, leadership satisfaction and development and the impact of external changes were sought. A qualitative research approach, multiple case study and multi-method design were employed. Forty-one directors and supervisors in three children’s mental health and child welfare agencies in Ontario participated in this study. Research methods included interviews, focus groups, observations and …

Host Community Narratives Of Volunteer Tourism In Ghana: From Developmentalism To Social Justice, Danielle E. Lediard Jan 2016

Host Community Narratives Of Volunteer Tourism In Ghana: From Developmentalism To Social Justice, Danielle E. Lediard

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

It is evident from the research around volunteer tourism that local perspectives are sorely lacking. Instead of the focus of research being on the communities that volunteer tourism is meant to help, the emphasis remains on the experiences of the volunteers. Although many researchers identify the lack of attention directed towards host communities as a problem, there remains a lack of research in this area. The importance in the existing research, then, remains on the ‘us’ in developed countries instead of the those in developing countries that volunteer tourism is meant to help. The primary objective of this research is …

Hiv Testing In The Context Of Hiv Stigma And Minority Stress, Mallory C. Harrigan Jan 2016

Hiv Testing In The Context Of Hiv Stigma And Minority Stress, Mallory C. Harrigan

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The HIV test is highly valued for its role in promoting personal health, aiding in HIV prevention, and enabling the epidemiological tracking of the virus. However, relatively few scholars have critically examined the social and cultural implications of testing practices (Scott, 2003). These implications are of particular concern because the groups targeted for testing (referred to as service priority groups) are marginalized communities, and have historically been further marginalized by many public health HIV prevention efforts (Waldby, 1996). This thesis examines the experience of receiving an HIV test from the perspective of individuals in service priority groups, which include gay, …

Videotaped Role-Play Simulation In Teaching Transcultural Self-Efficacy To Interprofessional Healthcare Students, Holldrid Aner Odreman Jan 2016

Videotaped Role-Play Simulation In Teaching Transcultural Self-Efficacy To Interprofessional Healthcare Students, Holldrid Aner Odreman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Increased demand for culturally sensitive healthcare services suggests that interprofessional beginning healthcare students need to gain the necessary cultural competency skills to be successful in delivering positive health outcomes for diverse patients. Bandura's theory of observational learning, Mezirow's theory of transformative learning, and Purnell's and Paulanka's model of cultural competence informed the framework for this research. The purpose of this quasi-experimental quantitative study was to determine the relationship between mode of instruction (observing role models in videotaped role-play simulation) and increased transcultural self-efficacy in cultural competence instruction. A convenience sample of 196 students enrolled in an interprofessional education (IPE) course …

Supervisory Working Alliance And Job Satisfaction In Community Mental Health Settings, Jennifer Weigelt Jan 2016

Supervisory Working Alliance And Job Satisfaction In Community Mental Health Settings, Jennifer Weigelt

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Researchers have written extensively on many facets of supervision in the counseling profession, including the supervisee benefits associated with a strong supervisory working alliance. While the majority of studies have focused on the working alliance in academic settings with student trainees, there has been a lack of research exploring the role of the supervisory working alliance in workplace settings, where supervision can be different from supervision offered in a university clinic or counseling center. Employee job dissatisfaction has been a problem identified within the mental health workforce. Researchers have identified effective supervision as a mediating factor. The purpose of this …

Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy For Veteran Survivors With Full Or Partial Ptsd, Mark Aaron Mayfield Jan 2016

Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy For Veteran Survivors With Full Or Partial Ptsd, Mark Aaron Mayfield

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Symptom severity among veteran survivors with partial or full posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) continues to increase, with approximately 40% of U.S. veterans reporting significant symptomology 10 years after initial onset of the condition. Veteran survivors often struggle to find therapeutic interventions that meet their specific needs and have a difficult time maintaining a therapy that is both equitable and evidenced based. Grounded in the Rogerian, client-centered theory, the purpose of this qualitative collective exploratory case study was to explore the effects of equine-facilitated psychotherapy with 3 veteran survivors with partial or full PTSD. A 4-stage process was used to collect …

Development Of A Patient And Family Educational Document Following Cancer Treatment, Debbie Slipkovich Jan 2016

Development Of A Patient And Family Educational Document Following Cancer Treatment, Debbie Slipkovich

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

New pharmacological interventions for oncology patients have resulted in longer lifespans after treatment completion and a large population of cancer survivors in communities. When patients complete treatment regimens for cancer, they leave the oncology practice with minimal knowledge of community resources that may assist them during this time of transition. These patients may not interact with care providers again until they return for a surveillance appointment in the future. Guided by Bandura's social cognitive theory, this project's aim was to develop a community-specific brochure that described the variety of services available to oncology patients and their families. The practice-focused question …

Identity-Based Cultural Paradigms, Trauma, And Interethnic Conflict In South Sudan, John Maluk Yak

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In 2011, South Sudan became independent through the agreement and implementation of the comprehensive peace agreement (CPA). However, interethnic conflict also escalated. This cycle of violence impacts the psychological and physical health of local society. When violence between ethnic groups escalates, civilians may be forced to flee their homes. This study employed a phenomenological research approach that examined the views and experiences of the recruited 13 members from the state of Jonglei; 5 members of the Dinka, 3 members of the Murle, and 5 members of the Nuer ethnic groups residing in the United States. In an attempt to understand …

Trait Emotional Intelligence, Motivation, Engagement, And Intended Retention Of Court-Appointed Special Advocate Volunteers, Kim Obenoskey

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

U.S. volunteer-dependent organizations continue to look for more effective ways to support their volunteer recruitment, training, and retention efforts. No prior research has evaluated what variables support sustained volunteerism for CASA volunteers. The purpose of this study was to investigate sustained volunteerism by evaluating the relationships between trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) measured using the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire, motivation to volunteer using the Volunteers Functional Inventory, volunteer work engagement using the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, and intended retention of CASA volunteers. One hundred fifty five CASA volunteers from different CASA organizations responded to an on-line survey. Correlational and regression …

Transitional Planning And Homelessness Of Youths Emancipated From Foster Care, Sharon Patricia Sutherland Jan 2016

Transitional Planning And Homelessness Of Youths Emancipated From Foster Care, Sharon Patricia Sutherland

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Previous research has indicated that approximately 25% of the 30,000 youths emancipated from foster care each year experience negative outcomes including poor education attainment, limited employment opportunities, homelessness, lack of access to healthcare, and poor social networks. Despite the existence of federal legislation that requires foster care agencies to assist foster youths to make the transition to independent living, research has revealed that the current transitional planning process is not effective. There is a gap in the current literature regarding qualitative research on youths' shared experiences of the transitional planning process as they transit out of foster care. This study …

Consistency In Clinical Preceptor Field Training For Sonography Students, Cathy Herring Daniels Jan 2016

Consistency In Clinical Preceptor Field Training For Sonography Students, Cathy Herring Daniels

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Consistency in clinical preceptor training for sonography students is important in assuring equity in sonography student evaluation. Review of a local community college sonography program revealed a gap between expected roles and responsibilities of clinical preceptorship and what was actually done in the clinical setting. The purpose of this project study was to explore perceptions of graduates and preceptors regarding what constituted best practices in the evaluation of sonography students in the clinical setting. Knowles's theory of active learning provided a framework for understanding the student-preceptor relationship in the evaluation process. Research questions focused on sonography graduates' and clinical preceptors' …

Gender And Self-Care Behaviors In The Burnout Of Mental Health Professionals, Kafy-Ann Martin-Johnson Jan 2016

Gender And Self-Care Behaviors In The Burnout Of Mental Health Professionals, Kafy-Ann Martin-Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Difficulties experienced at work can cause feelings of burnout that become prolonged and intensified without acts of self-care. The intense nature of mental health workers' jobs may make them, more vulnerable to burnout than other professionals. Because mental health professionals' mental and emotional wellness can significantly affect their work, adequate self-care is critical to both their well-being and that of their clients. Previous researchers have investigated the self-care behaviors of mental health professionals, but little was known about how gender affected the use of these behaviors in burnout prevention among mental health professionals. The purpose of this quantitative study was …

Cultural Competence, Emergency Management, And Disaster Response And Recovery Efforts Among African Americans, John Stanley Laine Jan 2016

Cultural Competence, Emergency Management, And Disaster Response And Recovery Efforts Among African Americans, John Stanley Laine

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Natural disasters disrupt African American communities in the United States and can exacerbate the degree of poverty for individuals within these communities, necessitating greater aid from local, state, and federal governments. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of cultural competence in disaster response serving African American communities. This research study focused on emergency manager's comprehension and education of cultural competence, what they recognized to be vital elements of a culturally competent emergency manager, and what the obstacles and components are to bring about the changes to the profession. This study used a qualitative case study design …

A Case Study On Undergraduate Entrepreneurial Constructivist Learning In Morocco, Said Benamar Jan 2016

A Case Study On Undergraduate Entrepreneurial Constructivist Learning In Morocco, Said Benamar

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Jobs are available for university graduates with entrepreneurship skills, but unemployment in Morocco persists because of the dissociation between university entrepreneurship graduate skills and professional market demand. While university graduates have achieved academic standards, they have lacked the entrepreneurial attributes to be employable. The purpose of this case study was to explore the use of entrepreneurship learning initiatives at Université Internationale de Casablanca (UIC), a private for-profit university, to promote students' employability. The constructivism and learning paradigm frameworks served as the theoretical foundations of this project study. The research questions addressed the effectiveness of entrepreneurship learning strategies in the promotion …

Evaluating current serum vitamin D levels in older adults who fall and sustain a fracture may provide additional insight in …

Prevention Of Medical Non-Adherence In University Of Kentucky Cardiothoracic Transplant Patients, Lisa L. Yearsley Jan 2016

Prevention Of Medical Non-Adherence In University Of Kentucky Cardiothoracic Transplant Patients, Lisa L. Yearsley

DNP Projects

Background: The population focus is the University of Kentucky cardiothoracic transplant patients. This population is chronically ill and in end-stage organ failure. Literature suggests depression in a cause and consequence of non-adherence in chronically ill patients, especially in the transplanted population. The third leading cause of organ rejection is non-adherence with medical treatment. Because the availability of organs is low and the demand is high, it is imperative to thoroughly screen patients medically and psychosocially using evidence-based tools. Transplant psychosocial listing criteria are not well standardized compared to medical listing criteria to identify appropriate transplant candidates. Standardized assessment tools present …

Collective Bargaining In Rent Stabilized Buildings: How New York City's Rent Regulated Market Can Benefit From The Fundamentals Of Labor Law, Stephanie Gorin Jan 2016

Collective Bargaining In Rent Stabilized Buildings: How New York City's Rent Regulated Market Can Benefit From The Fundamentals Of Labor Law, Stephanie Gorin

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

There is an evident imbalance of power between the two parties, which is often exasperated by the costs, timing and intimidation of Housing Court. This Note will seek to explore how a "tenant group" should be formed. Although many tenants living in rent-regulated buildings are surrounded by fellow tenants in similar circumstances, many other rent regulated tenants are the sole tenant remaining in their building, still under the auspices of rent regulation. This Note will further seek to explore how sole rent regulated tenants can form and join tenant groups. Next, it proposes a system in which mediation, and, if …

Writing Life Stories: A Phenomenological Study Of Memory And Meaning For People With Early Stage Alzheimer's Disease, Jennifer E. Dimond Msw Jan 2016

Writing Life Stories: A Phenomenological Study Of Memory And Meaning For People With Early Stage Alzheimer's Disease, Jennifer E. Dimond Msw

All Student Scholarship

There are an estimated five million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease; experts believe that by mid-century, that number will more than triple. The disease is the sixth leading case of death in the U.S., and the only one among the top ten with no known cure, treatment or means of prevention. An emerging body of research suggests that providing people with Alzheimer’s opportunities to tell their life stories can help them negotiate their personal identities and may have positive impacts on their sense of self. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach is used to understand the lived experience of people with early …

When Lonesome Rains Come Close Inside, Mary Katherine Spain Mfa

All Student Scholarship

When Lonesome Rains Come Close Inside is a collection of short written works by Mary Katherine Spain. In “Out Shelby,” we witness the corrosive effects of familial co-dependency and manipulation in rural Kentucky and the struggles of its ten-year old female narrator, Laura Neil, as she tries to protect the one thing she can relate to: the family hound dog; “Take My Hand” is an urban caper that explores the dependency of strangers in the struggle for self-preservation and the comic relief such shenanigans can often yield; “Look for the Octopus” follows a loosely-tethered elementary school teacher named Penelope Richards …

Evaluating Resilience In Syrian And Jordanian Youth, Rebecca Wener Wener Jan 2016

Evaluating Resilience In Syrian And Jordanian Youth, Rebecca Wener Wener

Public Health Theses

This paper uses baseline data collected from the Child Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM) that was administered to a sample of 603 Jordanian and Syrian adolescents living in Northern Jordan during Fall 2015 as part of a broader evaluation of the impact of a mental health and psychosocial wellbeing intervention. Data were analyzed to 1) determine whether the questionnaire performed according to the 3-factor structure predicted in the literature and 2) explore relationships between CYRM scores, individual, family and contextual factors, and measures of mental health, stress and wellbeing. With some exceptions, the predicted 3-factor structure was found within the Syrian-Jordanian …

Predictors Of Nutritional Status Among Young Samoan Children, Courtney C. Choy Jan 2016

Predictors Of Nutritional Status Among Young Samoan Children, Courtney C. Choy

Public Health Theses

The nutrition transition is associated with the rising burden of non-communicable diseases in low-and middle-income countries and in Samoa, young children are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition in various forms. In this present study, we documented the current prevalence and co-existence of child nutritional status outcomes within this population and by census region. We then examined the role of selected child, maternal, and household characteristics as potential predictors of child nutritional status. A cross-sectional, community-based design was used to collect data from singleton pairs of a non-pregnant mother and child between 24 to 59 months olds in the Samoan island of …

Exploring The Link Between Early Adversity And Behavioral Health, Erin Dowling Jan 2016

Exploring The Link Between Early Adversity And Behavioral Health, Erin Dowling

Public Health Theses

Background/Rationale Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and their lasting sequelae are a significant public health concern. ACEs are a risk factor for increased risk of detrimental health behaviors, chronic disease morbidity, and mortality. Though this connection has been supported by an abundance of evidence, how best to address these issues in practice and in the community has yet to be confirmed. Prior research examining the health promoting factors exhibited by adults who have experienced several different ACEs yet have experienced few negative health outcomes, have identified social support, education, and physical activity as potentially protective factors. This study seeks to identify …

The Adolescent Refugee Experience: Cultural Attitudes Of High School Burmese Refugees Living In Iowa, Alexis Helgens Jan 2016

The Adolescent Refugee Experience: Cultural Attitudes Of High School Burmese Refugees Living In Iowa, Alexis Helgens

Honors Program Theses

This research seeks to explore the experience of a group of high school refugee students who currently reside in Waterloo, Iowa. At home, the Burmese refugee high school students are surrounded by a rich Burmese culture; they interact with the Burmese language, food, and family. In school, they are surrounded by American systems; English is the only accepted language, and American pop culture is inescapable. With a growing number of refugees entering the country, it is vital to understand the experience and perceptions of developing young adults. Better understanding will facilitate in giving schools and other services tools to equip …

The Cost Of Uncertainty: Navigating The Boundary Between Legal Information And Legal Services In The Access To Justice Sector, Jennifer Bond, David Wiseman, Emily Bates Jan 2016

The Cost Of Uncertainty: Navigating The Boundary Between Legal Information And Legal Services In The Access To Justice Sector, Jennifer Bond, David Wiseman, Emily Bates

Journal of Law and Social Policy

The self-regulatory bodies that oversee legal professionals in Canada maintain strict control on the delivery of legal services, and access to justice projects must therefore always be conscious of activities that would violate certain restrictions. Careful adherence to these parameters is made difficult, however, by the lack of clarity about where the relevant boundaries are drawn. Using a project that provides legal assistance for refugees as a case study, this article highlights the challenges that the unclear distinction between “legal information” and “legal services” creates for access to justice initiatives. We conclude that the uncertainty can carry a variety of …
