Development Of Reading Comprehension Skills Among Students With Intellectual Disabilities Using Technologically-Based Reading Programs, Ella Macklin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research paper reported the results from research conducted regarding technologically-based reading comprehension programs for students who have intellectual disabilities. It provided evidence-based research and theoretical bases for learning(i.e. Zone of Generativity, Constructivism, Self-Efficacy) on the issue of these students not being adequately prepared to academically compete with their non-disabled peers in the classroom in a technologically-based world which requires proficient reading skills. This paper addressed low reading comprehension skills development at the foundational elementary level for basic reading comprehension skills. This paper examined the students' academic performance and integrated commentary from educational leaders and other stakeholders. Data were collected via surveys …

Peru is experiencing a concentrated HIV epidemic among men who have sex with men (MSM). Substance use (alcohol and drug use) has been found to be associated with HIV-related sexual risk behaviors. A recent surge in the number of social media users in Peru has enabled these technologies to be potential tools for reaching HIV at-risk individuals. This study sought to assess the relationship between substance use and sexual risk behaviors among Peruvian MSM who use social media. A total of 556 Peruvian MSM Facebook users (ages 18-59) were recruited to complete a 92-item survey on demographics, sexual risk behaviors, …

Background: China is experiencing growing epidemics of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Programmes to train physicians in China on HIV and STI knowledge, diagnosis, treatment, and risk reduction counselling can potentially reduce HIV and STI risk among high-risk patients. We aimed to assess a knowledge-based and skills-based programme for physicians in China to reduce patients' STI risk.
Methods: In this cluster randomised trial, we block randomised counties in two provinces in eastern China to intervention or control groups. In the intervention group, physicians from county general hospitals participated in a structured HIV and STI training programme and received …

Public agencies contract out to pursue a variety of goals. But, these goals cannot be realized if the performance of contractors is not assessed and monitored. This study examines the state of performance measurement and contract monitoring in the U.S. transit agencies. We focus on three research questions: (1) What monitoring capacity exists within transit agencies? (2) What monitoring methods are used by transit agencies? (3) What performance measures are tracked by transit agencies? We find monitoring units are common in a third of agencies in the study. Service and customer complaints are the most common performance measures, while penalties …

To commemorate the opening of Tilikum Crossing and the launch of this dynamic new district, this issue of the RSP Quarterly Review focuses on PSU collaborations with OHSU, OMSI, and the City of Portland.
We start by describing how OMSI, PSU, and OHSU collaborated to bring an exhibit about the human genome from the Smithsonian Institution to Portland. We then present a series of stories about projects building on the complementary health and life science talents of PSU and OHSU researchers. These include a study of ethnic inequities in health care access, a new malaria therapy, tools to improve MRI …

Purpose: Transgender individuals (TGI), who identify their gender as different from their sex assigned at birth, continue facing widespread discrimination and mistreatment within the healthcare system. Providers often lack expertise in adequate transgender (TG) care due to limited specialized training. In response to these inadequacies, and to increase evidence-based interventions effecting TG-affirmative healthcare, we implemented and evaluated a structural-level intervention in the form of a comprehensive Provider Training Program (PTP) in TG health within a New York City-based outpatient clinic serving primarily individuals of color and of low socioeconomic status. This pilot intervention aimed to increase medical staff knowledge of …

Gaining a better understanding of the change process holds promise to improve alcohol treatment. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) coupled with intensive longitudinal data (ILD) approaches have been proposed as promising methods that can advance change process research but have been used infrequently in AUD treatment research. The current study used these approaches to examine the within-person associations of motivation and self-efficacy and drinking among treatment seeking problem drinkers. Participants (N=96) received daily EMA surveys before, during, and after treatment for seven weeks spread over a nine month period. Multi-level modeling was used to test the within-person relationships between the change …
Representing Autistic Masculinity: Hegemonic Gender Performances In Contemporary Autism Films, James Samuel Kizer
Representing Autistic Masculinity: Hegemonic Gender Performances In Contemporary Autism Films, James Samuel Kizer
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
While longstanding notions of autism have conceptualized it as medicalized disability, recent scholarship has advanced theories of autism as cultural production; in other words, autism may be better understood as a synthesis of medical science, media portrayals, and societal attitudes rather than the product of any of these arenas individually. Academic inquiry into the intersection of autism and gender, though, remains largely underdeveloped. Work has been done theorizing how autistic people understand their gender but little exists regarding how cultural apparatuses actually produce it. My study, then, addresses this gap through examining media representations of autism, specifically autistic masculinity in …

Indian Act By-Laws: A Viable Means For First Nations To (Re)Assert Control Over Local Matters Now And Not Later, Naiomi Metallic
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Section 81 in the Indian Act, RSC 1985, c I-5, contains a broad range of subject matters over which Band Councils may pass by-laws. To date, this provision has been underutilized by most First Nation governments. One of the main reasons for this relates to the fact that, for over a hundred years, the Indian Act gave the federal government the power to disallow any such by-laws and Canada historically took a narrow view of the expanse of the Section 81 by-law powers and exercised its disallowance power broadly. Recent amendments to the Indian Act, however, have repealed this …

Easy Come, Easy Go: The Plight Of Children Who Spend Less Than 30 Days In Foster Care, Vivek Sankaran, Christopher Church
Articles
This article explores the plight of “short stayers” and argues that juvenile courts are failing to use two tools—the federal reasonable efforts requirement and the early appointment of parents’ counsel—to prevent the unnecessary entry of children into foster care. The article also argues that states should give parents and children the right to an expedited appeal of removal decisions to ensure removal standards are properly applied. Finally, this article argues that the federal government must acknowledge the problem of short stayers by utilizing data related to children who may unnecessarily enter foster care in the Child and Family Services Review, …

Academic And Social Integration And The Moderating Effects Of Student Characteristics: A Study Of First-Generation Student Academic Performance, Elena C. Mrozinske
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the relationship between academic and social integration on the academic performance of first-generation first-year students. Furthermore, this study examined if race, gender, or socioeconomic status moderate the relationship between academic and social integration and their academic performance. This study additionally developed a set of four academic and social integration profiles to investigate if there were differences among the profiles with respect to academic performance. Despite the recognition that first-generation students are at greater risk of academic failure than their peers, little attention has been given to what supports are most beneficial to particular subgroups of this population. …

Graduating students must be prepared with knowledge and skills for the financial aspects of social work practice. This study examines graduating students’ attitudes and perceptions about client finances, as well as their financial knowledge. Internet survey results (n = 116) of BSW and MSW graduating students indicate that respondents (a) perceive a limited function for discussing client financial circumstances in practice, (b) understand the relevance, however, of client finances, (c) are unprepared to address this aspect, and (d) are supportive of integrating this content into required policy and practice courses. Teaching and curricular implications, along with programmatic recommendations, are included.

Culturally Competent Evidence-Based Behavioral Health Services For The Transgender Community: Progress And Challenges, Debra A. Hope, Richard Mocarski, Chandra L. Bautista, Natalie R. Holt
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The presence of individuals who identify as transgender has emerged into public awareness in the United States in recent years. Celebrities who publicly transition have expanded the national conversation about gender variation beyond gender and women’s studies classrooms and certain specialty health and mental health services. This increased public visibility has been accompanied by increased visibility in the mental health literature, including the publishing of competencies or guidelines for working with clients who identify as transgender by various professional organizations. However, rapid societal changes and increased understanding of the experience of being transgender in our society means literature can rapidly …

An Examination Of The Perceptions Of Elementary School Principals, General Education Teachers, And Special Education Teachers About Supportive Inclusion Practices And Processes, Ahmed Afia Laroussi
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
This dissertation focuses on the perceptions of the school principals, general education teachers, and special education teachers about practices and processes that support the inclusion program. High stake holders in schools and parents of students with disabilities are advocating for the improvement of the quality of the inclusion as an academic service delivery model. This study is significant because the number of students with disabilities being placed in the general education classroom continues to increase, and the federal and the state mandates are holding school districts and schools accountable for all students’ academic performance, including students with disabilities. A …

The Effects Of Structural Violence On The Well-Being Of Marginalized Communities In The United States, Rakhshanda Saleem, Akansha Vaswani, Emily Wheeler, Meredith Maroney, Marta Pagan-Ortiz, Madeline Brodt
Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice
Structural violence refers to injustices embedded in social and institutional structures within societies that result in harm to individuals’ wellbeing (Galtung, 1969; Farmer, 2004). Using the structural violence framework, our research proposes to investigate its impact on marginalized communities through an intersectional analysis. Traditional academic scholarship in psychology demonstrates notable absence of voices and stories of individuals from such communities due to the lack of linguistic, class and other privileges that provide opportunities for research participation. Our data will come from interviewing members from three communities, “undocumented” Latinos (as) immigrants, Muslims (immigrants and non-immigrants), and LGBTQ+ persons who have experienced …

SPNHA Review
With billions of global users, the successful utilization of social media platforms is becoming an essential task for the nonprofit sector. Organizations that successfully implement strategic social media campaigns experience significant improvements to their organizational capacity. Navigating the implementation of a social media campaign is a challenging process, specifically, maximizing and measuring return on investment. This comprehensive literature review was conducted to gain deeper understanding of the challenges associated with maximizing and measuring return on investment in social media campaigns and to identify emerging best practices for addressing these issues. Existing literature from multiple fields including marketing, business, communications, and …

Navigating New Relationships During Recovery From Intimate Partner Violence: A Phenomenological Investigation Of Female Survivors' Experiences, Paulina Flasch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Much of the extant literature on intimate partner violence (IPV) centers on immediate needs and crisis interventions for victims and survivors, and limited emphasis is placed on the long-term recovery process. Researchers have identified post-IPV romantic relationships as a topic in need of further investigation, but to date, little to no research has focused on romantic relationships post-IPV. The present investigation provides a thorough literature review on the topic of recovery from IPV, introduces a phenomenological investigation of survivors' experiences of considering or navigating new relationships during recovery from intimate partner violence, and discusses findings and implications for counselors and …

Freedom Of Conscience In War Time: World War I And The Limits Of Civil Liberties, Laura M. Weinrib
Emory Law Journal
This Article examines the relationship between expressive freedom and freedom of conscience as the modern First Amendment took shape. It focuses on efforts by the American Union Against Militarism and National Civil Liberties Bureau¿the organizational precursors to the ACLU¿to secure exemptions from military service for conscientious objectors whose opposition to American involvement in the First World War stemmed from socialist or radical labor convictions rather than religious scruples. Although such men asserted secular, ethical objections to war, advocates strained to expand the First Amendment¿s Free Exercise Clause to encompass them. Concurrently, they sought to import a generalized theory of freedom …

Maternal Allostatic Load During Pregnancy: Predicting Length Of Gestation, Molly Malany Sayre
Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications
Allostatic load, or the “wear and tear” on the body due to stress, is thought to have a negative impact on length of pregnancy and contribute to health disparities in preterm birth. However, the magnitude of the effect on birth outcomes is unknown, in part due to questions of timing of measurement of allostatic load during pregnancy. This study used linear regression analysis of data from 156 pregnant women to test whether allostatic load is a predictor of length of gestation in the study sample, finding that third trimester allostatic load predicted length of gestation among women with full-term births. …

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to use the sociology of time to understand how time is perceived by academic librarians who provide reference and information service (RIS).
Design/methodology/approach
This study is a qualitative secondary analysis (QSA) of two phenomenological studies about the experience of RIS in academic libraries. The authors used QSA to re-analyze the interview transcripts to develop themes related to the perception of time.
Findings
Three themes about the experience of time in RIS work were identified. Participants experience time as discrete, bounded moments but sometimes experience threads through these moments that provide continuity, time is …

Exercising Independently And Exercising Independence: A Phenomenological Study Of Physical Activity And Choice Among Adults With An Intellectual Disability, Sheila O'Sullivan
Theses
Aim/Background: This study examines how adults with intellectual disabilities choose the physical activities they engage in, inside and outside of the day service they attend. Of particular relevance are the benefits derived from physical activity which promotes wellbeing, inclusivity, new opportunities and social acceptance for people with intellectual disability. This is timely in light of current policy with regard to New Directions 2012-2016 which is directed towards moving people with ID from congregated to community settings and the enactment of the recent Assisted Decision Making (Capacity) Act (2015) which supports decision-making for all citizens.
Methodology: The study used phenomenological analysis …
