Graduate School of Social Work Publications and Research
Objective: To effectively plan and provide culturally appropriate cancer education and screening services for low income Chinese immigrants, accurate disaggregated data are very much needed in understanding their cultural beliefs, attitudes, and practices toward cancer screening and education. This study explored the views of medically underserved Chinese immigrants in the United States and assessed their beliefs and attitudes toward the cause and prevention of breast, cervical, and prostate cancer, and their cancers screening behaviors.
Methods: Guided by both the Explanatory Model Interview Catalogue and the Health Belief Model, an exploratory research methodology was used. Narrative data from in-depth interviews and …

A Measure Of Comprehensive Airman Fitness: Construct Validation And Invariance Across Air Force Service Components, Gary L. Bowen, Todd M. Jensen, James A. Martin
Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article addresses the construct validity of an online assessment measure intended to reflect the biopsychosocial and spiritual fitness of U.S. Air Force (AF) members, defined as Comprehensive Airman Fitness. The analysis presented examines the extent to which this measure and the associated validation model are invariant across three AF components: active duty personnel, members of the Air National Guard/AF Reserve, and AF civilian employees. Our results indicate that total fitness (i.e., second-order factor), its four subcomponents (i.e., first-order factors), and the resiliency construct associated with role performance are invariant across service components at the configural, metric, and scalar measurement …

Behavioral Health Services Reports and Research Briefs
Funders, service providers, stakeholders, and community members often have a shared desire for activities and ideas to be sustained beyond the period of grant funding. Sometimes, along with this desire is confusion over the best route to sustainability, and how practices can be optimized to ensure sustainability.
The purpose of this research brief is to provide information for stakeholders to optimize the likelihood of sustaining successful practices and collaborative relationships that were developed through NYS Success. The research brief begins with a literature review on sustainability followed by findings from stakeholder focus groups and interviews, highlighting what aspects of Systems …
Proprietary Financing Of Global Economic Development To Complement Official Development Assistance, Patrice Flynn
Proprietary Financing Of Global Economic Development To Complement Official Development Assistance, Patrice Flynn
Journal of International & Interdisciplinary Business Research (2014-2019)
Something significant is happening in the world of global finance. A new socioeconomic development model has emerged, whereby, seed capital for small business start-ups is provided directly from shareholder-investors rather than multilateral aid or official development assistance (ODA). The new model co-opts the language of microfinance, the success of small lending programs for the poor, and the good-will associated with the notion of small business development to create a new microcredit financial industry and financial asset class. The phenomenon has the potential to alter our fundamental notion of global socioeconomic development. This article explores the proprietary nature of financing from …

Integrating Narrative Family Therapy In An Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Program: A Case Study, Steven M. Demille, Marilyn J. Montgomery
Integrating Narrative Family Therapy In An Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare Program: A Case Study, Steven M. Demille, Marilyn J. Montgomery
Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling
Adolescent mental health is a significant societal concern in the United States. Diagnosable mental health disorders have been reported at rates of 10–20 % among children and adolescents and this does not include adolescents experiencing personal and interpersonal distress not meeting diagnostic criteria. Adolescents who do not respond to traditional mental health services are often placed in residential treatment centers or other out-of-home treatment programs. Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare (OBH) is growing as a viable treatment option for adolescents who struggle with emotional, behavioral or substance related problems; however, questions have been raised about how to integrate the family into an …

Outcomes in Higher Education
This paper explores teacher candidates’ understandings of 1) makerspace/constructionist pedagogies; 2) the issue of bullying; and, 3) working with at-risk youth, as they evolved over the course of a six-month partnership. The partnership included researchers and teacher candidates at a Faculty of Education and the teacher librarian at a local elementary school who were participating in a larger Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)- funded project that focuses on building, implementing and evaluating an effective model for a school improvement program that increases teachers’ capacity, experience and specific fluency and expertise with technologies supporting STEAM learning and …

The Power Of Encouragement: The Role Of Christian Academic Librarians In Supporting The Whole Student, Earleen J. Warner
Librarian Publications and Presentations
Christian librarians are exhorted to consider the role of providing encouragement, care, and emotional and spiritual support to college students. Caring for the whole student can have a positive impact on college student success and retention, as well as have a transformational effect on students’ spiritual lives. By treating college students as whole persons created in the image of God, Christian academic librarians can not only help these students succeed by meeting their academic needs, but also help students thrive by supporting them emotionally and spiritually.

A 10-Year Study Of Factors Associated With Alcohol Treatment Use And Non-Use In A U.S. Population Sample, Karen G. Chartier, Kierste Miller, T. Robert Harris, Raul Caetano
Social Work Publications
Background
This study seeks to identify changes in perceived barriers to alcohol treatment and predictors of treatment use between 1991–92 and 2001–02, to potentially help understand reported reductions in treatment use at this time. Social, economic, and health trends during these 10 years provide a context for the study.
Methods
Subjects were Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics. The data were from the National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey (NLAES) and the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). We conducted two analyses that compared the surveys on: 1) perceived treatment barriers for subjects who thought they should get help for …
