The Relationships Between School Climate, Teacher Self-Efficacy, And Teacher Beliefs, Paige Lacks
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This quantitative study examined the relationship between school climate, teacher self-efficacy, and teacher beliefs. Teachers at two middle schools in rural southern Virginia participated in the study. Middle school teachers were surveyed using the School Climate Index to collect information about teacher-perceived views on their school’s climate and the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale to gather information about teacher self-efficacy. Pearson Product-Moment Correlations were used to measure the relationship between school climate and teacher self-efficacy as well as teacher self-efficacy and four teacher-perceived climate factors, including collegial leadership, teacher professionalism, academic press, and community engagement. Data analysis did not provide …

How To Improve Firm Performance Using Big Data Analytics Capability And Business Strategy Alignment?, S Akter, Wamba S Fosso, A Gunasekaran, R Dubey, Sj Childe
Plymouth Business School
The recent interest in big data has led many companies to develop big data analytics capability (BDAC) in order to enhance firm performance (FPER). However, BDAC pays off for some companies but not for others. It appears that very few have achieved a big impact through big data. To address this challenge, this study proposes a BDAC model drawing on the resource-based theory (RBT) and the entanglement view of sociomaterialism. The findings show BDAC as a hierarchical model, which consists of three primary dimensions (i.e., management, technology, and talent capability) and 11 subdimensions (i.e., planning, investment, coordination, control, connectivity, compatibility, …
Grandsons’ Sense Of Resiliency When Raised By African American Grandmothers, Nikki Stewart
Grandsons’ Sense Of Resiliency When Raised By African American Grandmothers, Nikki Stewart
Education Doctoral
This study utilized an interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the lived experiences of young adult males, ages 18 – 24, raised by their African American grandmothers and supported by a not-for-profit organization. It sought to determine the extent to which their overall needs were met and resiliency developed. The researcher utilized a two dimensional theoretical framework that focused on McCubbin & Patterson (1983) theory of family stress and adaptation (double ABCX model) and Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development (1968). Utilizing the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), 5 participants were identified scoring 76-100 on the scale, indicating a high resiliency level. Through …
Indoor Scene Localization To Fight Sex Trafficking In Hotels, Abigail Stylianou
Indoor Scene Localization To Fight Sex Trafficking In Hotels, Abigail Stylianou
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Images are key to fighting sex trafficking. They are: (a) used to advertise for sex services,(b) shared among criminal networks, and (c) connect a person in an image to the place where the image was taken. This work explores the ability to link images to indoor places in order to support the investigation and prosecution of sex trafficking. We propose and develop a framework that includes a database of open-source information available on the Internet, a crowd-sourcing approach to gathering additional images, and explore a variety of matching approaches based both on hand-tuned features such as SIFT and learned features …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The transgender population in Northwest Arkansas has difficulty in finding quality, accessible healthcare for gender transition-related procedures and for basic medical needs as well. These difficulties stem in part from a complex combination of discrimination, lack of information and training for proper treatment and care. This study takes a look at what is and isn’t available to transgender people in Northwest Arkansas and why they travel to other states and countries to seek healthcare.

Behind The Curtain: Fetishism And The Production Of Virtual Reality Treatment For Ptsd, Janice Haaken, Mariel Stadick
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Virtual Iraq/Afghanistan, a virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy designed for the treatment of combat-related PTSD, has generated wide public interest in the wake of growing concerns over mental health problems among service members. Enlisting concepts from the fields of cultural studies and psychoanalytic film criticism, the paper interprets the VR therapy program as a form of technology fetishism within the expanding apparatus of military mental health operations. Even as the program seeks to expose the “invisible wounds of war,” the stories produced through this use of visual culture conform closely to hegemonic military accounts of the psychological effects of combat.

Social Interaction In Mixed-Income Developments: Relational Expectations And Emerging Reality, Mark L. Joseph
Social Interaction In Mixed-Income Developments: Relational Expectations And Emerging Reality, Mark L. Joseph
Faculty Scholarship
In many cities, public housing has come to exemplify concentrated urban poverty and the social problems associated with it. One major policy response to addressing these problems is the demolition and redevelopment of public housing complexes as mixed-income communities. Several theoretical propositions that lie behind this policy are based on assumptions about the ways in which living among higher-income residents can lead to relationships and interactions that may benefit poor people. Based on in-depth qualitative research in two mixed-income developments in Chicago, this paper explores the dynamics of social interaction in an effort to better understand the processes and factors …

From Combat Zones To The Classroom: Transitional Adjustment In Oef/Oif Student Veterans, Lorrie Kato, Jeremy D. Jinkerson, Sarah C. Holland, Henry V. Soper
The Qualitative Report
With 600,000 veterans of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom enrolled in higher education with the Post-9/11 GI Bill, recognizing and responding to their predictable adjustment issues is imperative. Existing qualitative research has identified some transitional issues encountered by small groups of veterans. Because of qualitative research’s limited generalizability, however, themes may be viewed as more generalizable when corroborated by student veterans in different regions. In order to provide an in-depth description of the themes related to the post-deployment adjustment process, the first author conducted semi-structured interviews with 19 student veterans from a Southwestern community college who were returning to …

Domestic Sex Trafficking Of Minors In The United States The Disparity Between Federal Anti-Trafficking Laws And State Prostitution Legislation, Rachel N. Rippey
Senior Honors Theses
The United States has made strides in deterring the crime of sex trafficking of minors. Within the past 16 years, the central piece of legislation, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA), has seen numerous reauthorizations, each one expanding from the one that precedes it. However, with its original intent focused on prosecuting international traffickers, the language cited is ambiguous. Furthermore, the federal anti- trafficking laws are inconsistent with state prostitution laws due to differences in age of consent. Because of this, a minor who is under federal law a victim may be prosecuted as a criminal under state law. This …
