Self-Determination Theory And Risk Behavior In A Collectivistic Society: Preventing Reckless Driving In Urban Nepal, Yerina Ranjit Apr 2016

Self-Determination Theory And Risk Behavior In A Collectivistic Society: Preventing Reckless Driving In Urban Nepal, Yerina Ranjit

Doctoral Dissertations

Traffic road accidents are one of the leading causes of mortality in Nepal and around the world (WHO, 2011). Drivers in Nepal are not adequately educated about road safety rules, and regulations are also not strictly enforced. Public safety campaigns may be able to alter driver’s attitudes and behaviors, however, little is known about which persuasive strategies may be most effective. Drawing on self-determination theory and the health belief model, the current study used a post-only experimental design to test of the impact of collective v. individual appeals, and messages that emphasized that the choice to act was up to …

Sexual Minority Health: A Bibliography And Preliminary Study Of The Book Literature, Sharon A. Weiner

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The literature on the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersexual (LGBT) people appears in many types of resources and disciplines. To begin to address the need for relevant, easily accessible information for LGBT people and health care providers, this study identified popular and scholarly books published in the past 10 years and analyzed topics; number of books published per year; more prolific authors; and primary publishers. The results indicated that a relatively small number of books were published (521) by a wide range of publishers/self-publishers. Most were about mental health, relationships, or family and 24% were personal accounts.

The Role Of Social Dominance Orientation And Patriotism In The Evaluation Of Minority And Female Leaders, Crystal L. Hoyt, Stefanie Simon Apr 2016

The Role Of Social Dominance Orientation And Patriotism In The Evaluation Of Minority And Female Leaders, Crystal L. Hoyt, Stefanie Simon

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

This research broadens our understanding of racial and gender bias in leader evaluations by merging implicit leadership theory and social dominance perspectives. Across two experimental studies (291 participants), we tested the prediction that bias in leader evaluations stemming from White and masculine leader standards depends on the extent to which people favor hierarchical group relationships (social dominance orientation) and their level of patriotism. Employing the Goldberg paradigm, participants read identical leadership speeches attributed to either a woman or a man described as either a minority (Black or Latino/a) or a majority (White) group member. Results show social dominance orientation negatively …

Exploring Service Provider Perceptions Of Treatment Barriers Facing Black, Non-Gay-Identified Msmw, Bradley Forenza, Ellen Benoit Apr 2016

Exploring Service Provider Perceptions Of Treatment Barriers Facing Black, Non-Gay-Identified Msmw, Bradley Forenza, Ellen Benoit

Department of Social Work and Child Advocacy Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Non-gay-identified men who have sex with men and women and who use alcohol and other drugs are a vulnerable population. Little is known about health and medical service provider interaction with these underserved clients. This article presents a thematic analysis of two focus groups undertaken with social and medical service providers regarding the needs of non-gay-identified men who have sex with men and women. Four emergent themes (labeling, constructions of masculinity, HIV/AIDS awareness, and treatment success) illustrate perceived barriers to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, as well as treatment success. Implications for policy, practice, and future research are discussed.

Combatting Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv) In Islam: Muslim Religious Leaders As The Bridge Between Misinterpretation And Resolution, Mediha Salkic

SEWSA 2016 Intersectionality in the New Millennium: An Assessment of Culture, Power, and Society

This paper provides evidence from initiatives taken by various Islamic religious leaders (imams) in North America to demonstrate their potential in prohibiting the practice of IPV in Muslim communities. In the paper, the foundations for legitimization of IPV in Muslim societies, prevalence of IPV in Muslim communities, the role of the imam in Islam, and the various applicable processes of mediation which imams actualize or are suggested to actualize in engaging in cases of domestic abuse within their communities are explored. Substantial empirical evidence is presented to illustrate the constructive role of imams as the critical link between faltering misinterpretation …

Black Women Matter: Assessing Scales To Examine Minority Stress And Intersectional Microaggression, Vanessa N. Jones Apr 2016

Black Women Matter: Assessing Scales To Examine Minority Stress And Intersectional Microaggression, Vanessa N. Jones

SEWSA 2016 Intersectionality in the New Millennium: An Assessment of Culture, Power, and Society

Greater understanding of minority stress and intersectional microaggression in African American women’s lived experience may contribute to improved health outcomes. To date, there is a scarcity of research exploring intersectionality and psychometric instruments. This review examines purpose, format, psychometric properties, and cultural applicability of seven measurement scales that assess gendered racism and sexual identity. Future research should include diverse samples of African American women to improve external validity. In clinical practice, measurement scales provide an objective tool to evaluate and differentiate minority stress.
