Life Alert System For Vulnerable Adults Who Live Alone, Bohyun Ahn
Life Alert System For Vulnerable Adults Who Live Alone, Bohyun Ahn
Undergraduate Research Symposium
As medical technology and the standard of living have improved, the number of vulnerable adults who live alone has increased. Asking for help themselves may be impossible if they have a medical or life issue. Some accidents may go unnoticed for individuals living alone. When accidents regarding vulnerable adults occur, it may take days or weeks to become known by family or neighbors. To solve this problem, a life alert system was designed for vulnerable adults in their homes. To demonstrate the system, A fusion of different sensors were set up in a booth to detect the user’s motion over …

The Use Of Cohort Facebook Pages In Mft Training Programs, Alisha Abramson, Taryn Kalagian, Carissa A. Daniello-Heyda, Katherine M. Hertlein
Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)
The current study explores how private cohort Facebook pages impact a MFT students’ training experience. Limited research has been conducted regarding social media and clinical training programs. Students from national MFT master’s and doctoral programs will be interviewed about their experience with private cohort Facebook pages. Students will participate in focus groups lead by student-researchers in order to increase participation and anonymity. Data will be analyzed using Strauss and Corbin’ s (1990) grounded theory. This research is essential because of the increase of usage of Social Media in today’s society. Graduate programs are implementing the use of Facebook pages for …

The Role Of Family Interactions In Hiv Risk For Gay And Bisexual Male Youth: A Pilot Study, Michael C. Lasala, Carl F. Siebert, James P. Fedor, Elyse J. Revere
Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Despite ongoing prevention efforts, young gay and bisexual males continue to engage in sexual behaviors that place them at disproportionately high risk for HIV infection. Parental monitoring and parent-child communication have been found to be associated with low-risk sexual behavior among heterosexual youth, but the role of family interactions for gay and bisexual male youth remains largely unexplored. To help address this gap, an exploratory study of recorded and coded interactions among 35 gay and bisexual youth and their parents was done to begin to identify which types of family interactions were associated with youth high-risk sexual behavior. Parent-son communication …

Considerations When Implementing Trauma-Informed Care Into Male Domestic Violence Offenders' Intervention Programs, Elizabeth S. Sewell
Considerations When Implementing Trauma-Informed Care Into Male Domestic Violence Offenders' Intervention Programs, Elizabeth S. Sewell
Counseling
This project addresses significant factors to consider when implementing trauma-informed care in Batterer’ Intervention Programs. Literature addressing trauma informed care and domestic violence interventions is discussed to demonstrate how trauma-informed care might be used with male perpetrators of domestic violence. There is a gap in the literature describing how trauma-informed care is integrated with domestic violence perpetrators, and this gap is surprising due to extensive literature supporting a clear link between trauma history and violent criminality. A checklist was created using the best practices in trauma-informed approaches and is intended to be used by agencies in a clinical setting, including …

Spiritual Coping In Counseling With Trauma Survivors, Damaris Bronson
Counseling
Instances of past trauma are common in clients who are seeking help working through feelings of anxiety and depression. This research project will investigate the use of spiritual coping with clients who have experienced trauma involving intimate partner violence. The literature will identify areas that are important to consider when working with this population. Spirituality will be explored and along with Existentialism serve as the framework for working with trauma survivors. Due to the concentration of Alaska Native and American Indian individuals in Alaska, culture specific interventions are described. The application for this project, based on a review of the …
Enhancing The Clinical Supervision Process For Beginning Mental Health Professionals, Adie Callahan
Enhancing The Clinical Supervision Process For Beginning Mental Health Professionals, Adie Callahan
Counseling
Using current research, this project discovers and compiles the pertinent information students need to know to successfully utilize supervision. Supervision was established as a field competency after the American Psychological Association's 2002 Multinational Competencies Conference. Since then, the mental health field has made strides in defining, standardizing, and evaluating the process of supervision. Students' awareness and ability to effectively use supervision is still gaining momentum, as the professionals in the field develop an infrastructure to train student development of knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the utilization of supervision. This project's application establishes a supplemental booklet for students in the …

Addressing The Needs Of Adolescents: An Exploration Of Treatment Interventions For Anxiety Disorders, Carolyn Lunceford
Counseling
This project explores various cognitive behavioral techniques that may be used for the treatment of anxiety disorders in adolescents. Many adolescents experience anxiety disorders and providing treatment can be challenging. Mindfulness, relaxation, exposure, and music have all been shown to be useful techniques. Short-term treatment, incentives, and parental involvement were also found to be useful. The value of friendships, level of motivation, and drive towards independence should be taken into consideration when working with adolescents. This project includes a curriculum intended for small groups of adolescents with the goal of improving anxiety symptoms. The curriculum will assist counselors in both …

"The Ideals Of Pine Mountain": Gender, Progressive Thought, And The Built Environment At Pine Mountain Settlement School, Mary C. Fesak
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This paper evaluates the influences of Progressive thought, gender built environment of Pine Mountain Settlement School in Harlan County, Kentucky. Progressive educators Katherine Pettit and Ethel de Long founded the Pine Mountain Settlement School in 1913 as part of the growth of the rural settlement school movement in Appalachia. Pettit and de Long commissioned early female architect Mary Rockwell Hook to work with them to create a comprehensive plan for the construction of the campus. While Hook was not an educator, her educated, middle-class background led her to share Pettit's and de Long's mission to preserve what they saw as …

On Translation Policy, Gabriel Gonzalez Nunez
On Translation Policy, Gabriel Gonzalez Nunez
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications
The term translation policy has become problematic for the field of Translation Studies because it has meant so many things to so many authors that it threatens to lose some of its efficacy (see Meylaerts 2011a, 163–166). In light of this, the concept of translation policy should be developed so that it will be broad enough to account for diverse phenomena in different places with multiple agents, while retaining specific parameters that make the concept methodologically useful. This article will consider insights from Translation Studies and from other fields, especially from the field of Language Policy, in order to …

Gulf South Summit on Service-Learning (Archived)
Rationale: Service learning and community engagement are a natural fit for many disciplines. Service learning projects provide students with an opportunity to apply course content to real world situations (Harder, 2010), developing projects that will benefit clients, agencies, and communities. Service learning is used across a variety of disciplines including social work (Hostetter, Sullenberger, & Wood, 2013) nursing (Murray, 2013) and business (Payne, Campbell, Bal, & Piercy, 2011). Working in a group within a service learning context provides a multitude of benefits including greater interest, motivation, and engagement; improved communication skills; real-life application of course content; and skills …

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
Home visiting services seek to promote maternal and child health through education, agency referrals, and interpersonal connection. These evidence-informed services are often voluntary, which poses significant challenges in terms of enrolling, engaging, and retaining clients. According to McCurdy and Daro (2001), attributes such as: client characteristics, health professional attributes, features of the agency, and the neighborhood acceptance of the program may influence a client's decision to enroll. Furthermore, the timing of engagement or contact affects the engagement of home visitors with clients. In addition, sociodemographic factors of: ethnicity, ages of parents and children involved, and educational attainment influence a client's …

On the basis of the 2001 Ethnic Diversity Survey, this study examines relationship between generation of Canadian residence and social integration. Two subjective (self-reported) measures of integration are used: sense of belonging to Canada and feelings of discomfort living in the host society. The study finds that the relationship between immigrant generation and social integration depends upon demographic and neighbourhood characteristics, as well as upon the city of settlement. The study also illustrates that while sense of belonging does not change across immigrant generations, it is higher for South Asians, lower among Chinese and French Canadians, and similar to the …

Since the Great Recession (December 2007–2009 in the United States), poverty has compromised many families and increased the prevalence of young children living in neighborhoods of concentrated, deep poverty. However, financial literacy interventions have reported promising outcomes for influencing financial choices and financial knowledge, highlighting the potential of such programs for improving the economic positions of families and children. This report presents results from a mixed-methods evaluation of a financial literacy intervention with Head Start families in the St. Louis metropolitan area. The intervention combines savings incentives and one-on-one coaching with 10 hours of financial education on debt management, banking, …

Ideal Elves? Expressing A 3-Dimensional Personality In A 2-Dimensional Space, David Tauber, Joshua Wanner
Student Research Symposium
Published in 2007, the Ideal Elf is a classic article studying character creation in Online Games. It used quantitative methods to address the difference between the idealize self of individuals surveyed, and the online characters they create. In their survey they found the difference between an individuals ideal self and the traits of the character they created was considerably smaller than the difference between the difference between the individual’s ideal self and their actual self. From this they suggested the creation of characters in game is partially a way for individuals to express their ideal selves. Our research attempted to …

School Climate Transformation Efforts In Montana's Public Schools: State Support Of Local Visions For The Future, Piper Worthington
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Public education in the United States (US) has been called the “great equalizer”. Schools not only intersect with with every family in a school district, they often serve as a locus for community gathering and development: schools are a reflection of the community in which they are situated. Over the past 15 years, academic research and teaching practices have redefined the measure of success in school to include and connect emotional and behavioral learning with academic development. How have state educational agencies (SEAs) supported local schools and districts (LEAs) through this process, while also supporting the unique identities of school …
