Beliefs About Social Workers Among Black Males, Tavon Antonio Harris

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

It’s been more than a decade since the National Institute of Mental Health (NAMI) initiated its public campaign, ‘Real Men Real Depression.’ Despite increased awareness, research and relevant studies indicate that African American / Black men continue to underutilize mental health treatment while still having the highest all-cause mortality rates of any racial/ ethnic group in the United States. When reading this statement, one must question what impact that the beliefs about ‘social workers’ through the lens of Black males in the United States, may play. This very simply, yet flammable, question not only seems pertinent but also seems to …

African American communities have been subject to institutional and societal inequalities for much of our nation’s history. A review of the literature has shown that these families have unequal access to resources and opportunities, especially in the comparison to the rest of the population. These factors may contribute to African American children having higher rates of substantiated cases of abuse and neglect, as well as the amount of time that these children spend in the foster care system. A qualitative study was conducted in the form of focus groups. The study examined the African American community’s perspective of the child …

Women's Shelters: Strategies To Empowerment, Rachel Raynor Jun 2016

Women's Shelters: Strategies To Empowerment, Rachel Raynor

City and Regional Planning

Working at a women’s social work site in Nicaragua, sparked my initial interest in researching and developing a typology of women’s shelters as an useful guide for determining and providing appropriate services. The goal is to create a typology that can be useful in determining what type of facility or shelter is the most effective for different women and the varying backgrounds and situations they are in. The desire to empower women was initiated by my first-hand experience in Nicaragua. There I saw many instances of intimate partner violence (IPV), as well as other, non-physical, forms of abuse. I never …

How Fast Is Fast Enough? Education Students’ Perceptions Of Email Response Time In Online Courses, Ching-Wen Zhang, Beth Hurst, Annice Mclean

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

An unintended consequence of the ubiquitous use of email for online course communication is that some faculty believe students now seem to expect 24/7 access to their instructors. Emails come from students at all hours of the day and night, and they seem to expect answers quickly. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of college students in the field of education of how long they expect to wait for their online instructors to respond to their emails and how quickly they respond to emails from their online instructors. A voluntary, anonymous survey was sent to undergraduate …

Persistence In Higher Education: A Qualitative Study Of Student Perceptions, Beliefs, Outlook And Context In Qatar, Batoul Khalifa, Ramzi Nasser, Atmane Ikhlef, Janet S. Walker, Said Amali

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

This study attempts to address the challenges of students in higher education in Qatar. The study draws on student perceptions, beliefs, outlook, and context; we approach the study through grounded means by posing leading interview questions with the aim of exploring and probing. The approach is grounded in that no specific theory drives the questions; rather, the responses from the interview often require interpretation through theory to justify the findings. The sample comprised 35 students who were interviewed through probing and questioning techniques. The questions led to converging responses, which were segregated into themes. A large majority of students felt …

A Quantitative Study Of Animal-Assisted Interventions With Youth Who Have Experienced Maltreatment, Meghan Elizabeth Anderson

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Youth who have experienced maltreatment (abuse, neglect, exposure to violence) typically exhibit worse life outcomes (lower graduation rates, higher incident of substance use, unplanned pregnancies, etc.). Effective therapeutic interventions are important to combat these negative effects. Animal Assisted Intervention (AAI) is a popular and growing field. Anecdotal evidence abounds on the efficacy of AAI, however, there is a lack of quantitative and qualitative research and evidence-backed models of treatment particularly with youth. This study sought to increase the amount of quantitative evidence on AAI by specifically focusing on evaluating the Power Tools for Living Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) model with …

This population’s lack of mental health utilization is due to various barriers hindering the population’s need for help, a substantial for social work practitioners. To better understand the factors that lead up to that, the current study explored and identified perceptions toward seeking and receiving mental health services among Hispanic members. Using a qualitative data collection, ten participants were interviewed to elicit their perceptions about mental health services ranging …

Artitudes: Mapping Lines Of Demarcation In Art Education, Pamela Harris Lawton Jun 2016

Artitudes: Mapping Lines Of Demarcation In Art Education, Pamela Harris Lawton

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

This essay explores the conscious and un-conscious divides art educators create as they map their careers as art educators. It begins with a discussion of possible causes for lines of demarcation to develop through examination of how art educators self-identify, the structure of teacher preparation programs at institutions of higher education, degrees in art education, and a visual and written narrative of my own journey navigating lines of demarcation within the profession. It closes with suggestions for strategies to diminish or erase the dividing lines that contribute to negative perceptions, attitudes (artitudes), low professional self-esteem, and teacher burnout.

However, the effectiveness of proton therapy has not yet been documented in clinical trials for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most common type of lung cancer. Two ongoing trials of proton therapy aim to demonstrate its effectiveness and may change the standard of care for NSCLC.

Epistemic Injustice And Conditioned Experience: The Case Of Intellectual Disability, Hildur Kalman, Veronica Lovgren, Lennart Sauer Jun 2016

Epistemic Injustice And Conditioned Experience: The Case Of Intellectual Disability, Hildur Kalman, Veronica Lovgren, Lennart Sauer

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

People with intellectual disabilities are commonly seen as “nonadult others” and as persons of limited credibility, and this view has implications in a number of areas. In this paper, the empirical findings from an interview study focused on lived experience are analyzed in relation to the intersections of intellectual disability and gender. In light of Fricker’s (2007) work on epistemic injustice, and in recognition of Anderson’s (2012) emphasis on the importance of transactional and structural injustice, a novel aspect of epistemic injustice is provided: as a consequence of conditioned lived space. The social identity of intellectual disability position persons thus …

Mixed-Income Developments, Mark L. Joseph, Miyoung Yoon Jun 2016

Mixed-Income Developments, Mark L. Joseph, Miyoung Yoon

Faculty Scholarship

A mixed-income development can be defined as a complex with housing and other amenities such as parks, schools and community centers that has the mixing of income groups as a fundamental part of its financial and operating plan. Mixed-income development is a housing policy that has been implemented in the U.S. and around the world to deconcentrate poverty, particularly in public housing developments. Mixed-income development engages private real estate developers to produce public housing and thus exemplifies the shift in the 1990s to a neoliberal approach to urban development and other social services. Mixed-income development has proven to be an …
