Hidden Black And Brown Bridges: The Mutual Influences Of Dr. Martin Luther King And Hispanic Theologian Dr. Justo González, Gabriel A. Greaves
Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones
This study discusses the significance of “grounding” social activism in religious and cross cultural dialogue using the understudied relationship between Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Latino theologian Justo González. Dr. González was the translator for King during his visit to Puerto Rico in 1965 with FOR (Fellowship of Reconciliation). González is a Cuban American Methodist who has written more than 50 books and 300 articles in the field of Hispanic theology. Additionally, González founded the first academic journal dedicated to the impact of Latino theology, known as Apuntes. This resulted in him being considered among the prominent voices …
Talk About Race In The Undergraduate Classroom: A Discourse Analysis, Leighnah L. Perkins
Talk About Race In The Undergraduate Classroom: A Discourse Analysis, Leighnah L. Perkins
Media and Communication Studies Summer Fellows
As researchers have noted, many people are afraid to talk about race (Alexander, 2010; Miller & Harris, 2005). Given the race-related events and tragedies occurring in the U.S. today, people need to find ways to move past this fear in order to work together to solve societal problems. Harris (2003) suggested that the undergraduate classroom is a key place to engage in discussions about race. This research project examined the ways that college students talk about race and race-related problems in the classroom. The data collected for this project included observations and audio recordings of three sections of a seminar …

While earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Gardner-Webb University, Mindy Robinson (’16) realized that the most important part of her education wasn’t found in a textbook. “In both my undergraduate and graduate studies, what I valued most was the Gardner-Webb community,” she reflected. “I met my husband, Chase, and some of my very best friends. I have formed lasting relationships that I will carry with me long after my time at Gardner-Webb has come to an end. There are several professors that I would feel comfortable calling and talking to about whatever was going on in my life. These …

Chase Robinson (’16) of Vale, N.C., came to Gardner-Webb University thinking he was on his way to the foreign mission field. As he began serving in student ministries and working in local churches, he discovered God’s calling was closer to home, and he wouldn’t be alone. His future included Mindy McNeely (’16), a young woman he met through Fellowship of Christians United in Service (FOCUS), a student ministry involving teams of students who lead youth retreats locally and regionally.
Compassion Predictors In Undergraduates: A Catholic College Example, Erin S. Callister, Thomas G. Plante
Compassion Predictors In Undergraduates: A Catholic College Example, Erin S. Callister, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
Compassion is sorely needed in contemporary society, including within faith-based colleges. Past research has examined the prevention of compassion fatigue in healthcare professions, but relatively little research exists on the predictors of compassion, particularly among student populations. This study examines the factors associated with higher compassion levels in graduating college seniors, revealing demographic, experiential, and beliefrelated factors contributing to compassion. Results suggest that the general profile of a highly compassionate graduating college senior is a student who is female, politically liberal, religious, studying the natural or social sciences, actively involved in community service or volunteering, and who has undergone workshops …

Gardner-Webb welcomed nearly two dozen distinguished former faculty members to the University’s Tucker Student Center this summer for a luncheon to honor their dedication to the institution and to celebrate the release of the third edition of the “GWU Faculty Emeriti Book.” “The Faculty Emeriti Luncheon was a wonderful opportunity for the University to reconnect with a group of faculty members who have made a profound contribution to the shape and fiber of Gardner-Webb University,” said Dr. Ben Leslie, GWU Provost and Executive Vice President. “Their presence at Gardner-Webb has been sacrificial in that any of them could easily have …
Assyriology At The Liberal Arts College: A Report From The Field, Alan Lenzi
Assyriology At The Liberal Arts College: A Report From The Field, Alan Lenzi
College of the Pacific Faculty Presentations
There is an ideal in American Assyriology that active scholars will work at a research university, where they will teach Akkadian and/or Sumerian and lead philological seminars on selected texts from their sub-specialty. Although such an Assyriologist may teach an undergraduate course or two each year, their most important pedagogical efforts will be directed at graduate students. The reality of the academic job market makes this career path available to relatively few scholars. Those who remain in academia often find employment teaching undergraduates in a department of history, religious studies, art history, or comparative literature. The present paper shares my …

Summer 2016: The Quest For Community Takes A Young Grad Student On A Journey To Sister Joan, Sister Joan Chittister, O.S.B.
St. Norbert College Magazine 2013-2018
Sister Joan Chittister, O.S.B., has been called “the maverick Benedictine nun who dares speak her mind to her church” (religious news.com). The best-selling author and internationally renowned speaker is known for her views on justice, peace, human rights, women’s issues and contemporary spirituality in the church and in society. Chittister has described herself as holding a position of query, of theological and scriptural commitment and search. To her new intern Breanna Mekuly ’12, Chittister is one of the wise women she first learned of in her theology classes at St. Norbert, women who taught her to be proud of herself …

Meaningful Mutations: Reflections On The Synchronicity Of Evolution, Ritske Rensma
Meaningful Mutations: Reflections On The Synchronicity Of Evolution, Ritske Rensma
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Although Jung made a connection between his concept of the archetype and mankind’s evolutionary history throughout his career, he remained notoriously tight-lipped about his own specific views on evolutionary theory. In the final years of his life, however, he finally went more into detail about this important topic, putting forward a most thought-provoking idea: the notion that synchronicity, or meaningful coincidences, had a role to play in the way evolution took shape. As I will argue in this paper, Jung’s comments on this topic present clear evidence that he did not think primarily along Darwinian lines, as has recently …

You’ve Gotta Read This: Summer Reading at Musselman Library
Each year, Musselman Library asks Gettysburg College faculty, staff, and administrators to help create a suggested summer reading list. Our goal is to inspire students and the rest of our community to take time in the summer to sit back, relax, and read.
With the 2016 collection, we again bring together recommendations from across our campus—the books, movies, TV shows, and even musicals that have meant something special to us over the past year. 124 faculty, administrators and staff offer up a record number of 226 recommendations.
We include five special features this year. Two of our regular columnists are …

The Selfish Law: A Memetic Study Of The Transition From Generational Morality To Individual Morality In Deuteronomy 24:16, Ezekiel 18, And Jeremiah 31:27-30, Jonathan Michael Gracza
The Selfish Law: A Memetic Study Of The Transition From Generational Morality To Individual Morality In Deuteronomy 24:16, Ezekiel 18, And Jeremiah 31:27-30, Jonathan Michael Gracza
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The transition from generational morality to individual moral responsibility in Judah during King Josiah's time is present in Deuteronomy, Ezekiel, and Jeremiah. However, the fact that such an approach to morality would survive a period in which Assyrian, Babylonian, and Hittite cultures exerted cultural pressure on the Israelites to conform is rather astonishing. This thesis applies memetics – a theory that applies evolutionary models to cultural development – to the topic in order to gain a more in-depth understanding of the transition from generational morality to individual moral responsibility. I argue, based on the insights that an evolutionary understanding of …

In September 2005, the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published a series of cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad, including one in which a bomb was hidden under his turban. According to the paper’s cultural editor, Flemming Rose, the cartoons were an exercise in free speech, a value prized in liberal democracies. For him, fear of retaliation from Muslims was leading to self-censorship among Danish authors and artists. Muslim groups protested the cartoons not only within Denmark but also around the world, some of which turned violent. To their minds, the prophet (and members of their faith) had been defamed. Cases like this …

The Problem Of Authority In Conservative Evangelical Christianity: A Critique Of American And South Korean Expressions, Harold Arthur Brower Iv
The Problem Of Authority In Conservative Evangelical Christianity: A Critique Of American And South Korean Expressions, Harold Arthur Brower Iv
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This thesis explores and compares the ways in which the Bible is read, interpreted, and held as an authority by conservative Evangelicals in the United States and South Korea. By examining the history, literary practices, and social systems in each country, I reveal authorities other than the Bible that emerge from Evangelical culture. Discourse theory, reader-response theory, and rhetorical criticism provide the theoretical lenses through which each expression is viewed. My research strategies included: (1) a six month ethnographic project held in two Korean Evangelical communities; and (2) a survey of Korean laity. Data were collected from direct observations, Evangelical …
Unveiling Leadership Giftedness: Identifying Its Attributes And Significance For Children With Promise, Theresa Yvonne Newsom
Unveiling Leadership Giftedness: Identifying Its Attributes And Significance For Children With Promise, Theresa Yvonne Newsom
Dissertations
Leadership giftedness continues to be the hidden dimension in gifted and talented education. There are numerous definitions, a lack of clarity for identifying leadership giftedness and an unfulfilled federal mandate for programming. Yet, leadership continues to be a hidden dimension in gifted and talented education, especially for children with promise who are sometimes identified as at-risk. With a nation’s need for the development of future leaders, this study used phenomenology to conduct interviews with eight individuals to better understand their insights and experiences with leadership as they faced and overcame adversity in their childhood or youth. By conducting open-ended interviews …
