Administration Policy Impacts On Counselor Productivity And Overall Job Satisfaction, Bailey Ziemann

Counselor Education Capstones

This literature review discusses the impact administration, agencies and their policies impact the counselor’s productivity and job satisfaction. Often the board of administration is compiled of individuals who are disconnected from the counseling field, yet are the ones creating the policies for the counselors to abide by. Administration creates policies based upon criteria created by the agency, which may not always coincide with the counselor’s job duties. Impacts of such policies are discussed in detail. Additionally, obstacles and barriers are examined. Some of these barriers include insurance requirements, agency requirements, and client obstacles. It is crucial administration, counselors and counselors-in-training …

Attachment Styles And Trust Propensity In Females With Borderline Personality Disorder, Jacob Matthew White Dec 2016

Attachment Styles And Trust Propensity In Females With Borderline Personality Disorder, Jacob Matthew White

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of the most frequently encountered and complex disorders in mental health care. Interpersonal impairment is a central issue for individuals with BPD. This complex disorder has received negative stigma along with historically more females than males receiving this diagnosis (Linehan, 1993). Therefore, this study examined a clinical sample of 30 females diagnosed with BPD. Through the collection of data this study used the following measures: a basic demographic questionnaire gathering specific age, ethnicity, current relationship status, parental relationship status, the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR; Brennan, Clark & Shaver, 1998), and the Propensity …

Suicide And Disability: Three Different Analyses Of A Nation-Wide Sample Of American Adults, Emily M. Lund

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Suicide is a major public health issue and the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. People with disabilities are one group that may be at high risk for suicide. This dissertation presents three studies that examined suicidal thoughts and behaviors in a national sample of individuals with and without disabilities. They also examined the ways in which depression scores and sociodemographic factors such as gender, religion, race, and employment, interact with disability status to influence suicidality. I found that people with disabilities reported more suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts and were more likely to believe that they …

An Evaluation Of Fading Procedures On The Effects Of Children Using Activity Schedules To Play On The Playground Appropriately, Kylee Lewis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Children with autism often have difficulty playing appropriately and independently. Activity schedules have been shown to be effective at teaching children with autism to play. Some individuals with autism engage in repetitive behaviors, especially on the playground. A previous study showed that activity schedules were effective at reducing repetitive or patterned behavior on the playground by teaching three students with autism to play appropriately and independently. This study investigated the effects of fading procedures on teaching independent and varied play skills to young children with autism during free play on the playground.

The Influence Of Feedback On Implicit Bias In A Sample Of Primarily Caucasian Women Counselors-In-Training, Branson L. Boykins Dec 2016

The Influence Of Feedback On Implicit Bias In A Sample Of Primarily Caucasian Women Counselors-In-Training, Branson L. Boykins

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine whether bogus cultural feedback influenced the presence of implicit racial bias in the clinical judgment of counselors-in-training. Participants were 193 master’s-level counselors-in-training, in which the majority were Caucasian women (57%). Three hypotheses guided the study. The first hypothesis focused on the influence of priming positive and negative feedback about cultural attitudes on a clinical case, regardless of the race or clarity of the case. The second and third hypotheses both focused on racial bias by examining the interaction between type of feedback, race, and ambiguity of diagnosis on participants’ clinical impressions of …

5-Point Scales: Five Points Away From Beating Behavior Problems, Michelle Bolling Nov 2016

5-Point Scales: Five Points Away From Beating Behavior Problems, Michelle Bolling

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Five-point scales have been used in treating pain, anger, anxiety and educationally for children on the Autism Spectrum. Because 5-point scales are visual and match abstract ideas with numbers, they are well-suited for use with children of all ages. They can easily be implemented in a variety of settings, including by parents at home. Participants will learn how to develop, use, and monitor 5-point scale interventions; see different case studies applications; and explore applications within an RTI/MTSS framework. Case studies for individual and class-wide intervention from grades PK – 12 will be shared.

Ethics At The End Of Life: A Teaching Tool, Cara L. Wallace, Kara J. Thielman, Andrea N. Cimino, Heidi Adams Rueda

Social Work Faculty Publications

Social workers rarely receive education and training in the areas of grief, bereavement, and death and dying, which may lead to difficulties in compassionately and ethically addressing concerns in end-of-life or grief-related contexts. This article presents actual and potential outcomes from three challenging end-of-life case studies using Mattison’s ethical decision-making model as a framework. The case studies were drawn from student interviews with experienced master’s-level social workers. This pedagogical article helps to promote self-reflection and consideration of ethical issues in grief and death-related situations as well as supplement death education and ethics curricula to include end-of-life content.

Escaping The Evil Avenger And The Supercrip: Images Of Disability In Popular Television, Alison Harnett Nov 2016

Escaping The Evil Avenger And The Supercrip: Images Of Disability In Popular Television, Alison Harnett

Irish Communication Review

This article examines the extent and significance of the under-representation of the disabled community in fictional film and television, arguing that when it is portrayed onscreen, the images are often inaccurate or unfair. Whereas media treatment of women, the gay community, or ethnic minorities has received considerable academic attention, no such priority has been given to the nature of the portrayal of the disabled, or the lack of proportional visibility on our screens.

Work-Related Resilience: Deaf Professionals’ Perspectives, Kim B. Kurz, Peter C. Hauser, Jason D. Listman Sep 2016

Work-Related Resilience: Deaf Professionals’ Perspectives, Kim B. Kurz, Peter C. Hauser, Jason D. Listman

JADARA

Ten Deaf professionals were interviewed about their perspectives on resilience risk and protective factors that affect career success. Thematic analysis revealed four main risk factors, all related to inequalities: (a) audism and linguistism; (b) networking challenges; (c) working harder than hearing peers; and, (d) promotion limitations. The Deaf community was described as a resilience protective factor that counters the work-related risk factors because it provides: (a) social support; (b) role models; and, (c) “Deaf can” optimism. The results have important implications for vocational rehabilitation, education and counseling programs as they highlight the protective factors Deaf employees need for work-related resilience.

Workforce Innovation And Opportunity Act Implementation: Ethical Considerations For Counseling Practice, Christine Anderson Aug 2016

Workforce Innovation And Opportunity Act Implementation: Ethical Considerations For Counseling Practice, Christine Anderson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The Vocational Rehabilitation program exists to assist individuals with disabilities to attain, secure and benefit from employment. The purpose of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998 (WIA), which included the Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998, is to empower individuals with disabilities to maximize employment. The Act was reauthorized as the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014. The Act includes significant changes to rehabilitation service delivery including a stronger emphasis on services to youth and outreach to minority populations. Despite the changes, the Act is vague and does not include methods for implementation. Although the specifics for implementation of WIOA …

The Juvenile Addiction Risk Rating For Use In Vocational Rehabilitation, Paul Tyler Hickerson Aug 2016

The Juvenile Addiction Risk Rating For Use In Vocational Rehabilitation, Paul Tyler Hickerson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The prevalence of substance use among adolescents warrants considerable concern since it often has detrimental effects on an individual’s physical and mental health, and correlates with worsened Social, physical, and employment outcomes. Research shows that adolescents with disabilities are especially susceptible to the development of substance use disorders. To address this concern and to ensure accurate rehabilitation service planning, effective screening for substance use risk is necessary. Unfortunately, the most common screening instruments for adolescent substance use rely on information obtained solely from self-report. This type of data, although useful, is also susceptible to inaccuracies due to such factors as …

Attitudes Of Health Professions' Students Toward Older Adults, Michele M. Shuman Jul 2016

Attitudes Of Health Professions' Students Toward Older Adults, Michele M. Shuman

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Thursday, July 21, 2016 and Friday, July 22, 2016:

Purpose: Across the world, the population of older adults is growing exponentially. This growing population will not only tax each socio-economic system in which the growth is occurring, but especially the health care systems in each respective country. For many of these older adults, as they live longer, suffer from at least one chronic illness. Older adults occupy more than half the beds in acute care institutions. Their age and health status makes older adults an especially vulnerable population who deserve the most compassionate and competent care possible. …

Self-Care And Mobility Disability At Mid-Life In Lucky Few, Early-, And Late-Baby Boom Birth-Cohorts, Carlos Siordia Jul 2016

Self-Care And Mobility Disability At Mid-Life In Lucky Few, Early-, And Late-Baby Boom Birth-Cohorts, Carlos Siordia

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Disability is related in definite ways with makers of social stratum, as it can be influenced by and has the potential to contribute to the production and reproduction of social stratification. Intersectional markers of social stratification processes are ignored determinants of health. The Class, Race, Sex (CRS) hypothesis presented here argues that a low-education, racial-minority, and female disadvantage will compound to affect the prevalence and risks of disability. The evidence presented validates the CRS hypothesis by showing that disability prevalence and risk clusters first by class, race, and then sex. The cross-sectional study of community-dwelling adults in the Unites States, …
