Mascaret – An Open Source 1d Simulation Code For Flow Hydrodynamic With A Generic Application Programing Interface, Jean-Marc Lacombe, Fabrice Zaoui, Nicole Goutal

Open Water Journal

MASCARET is an open source software dedicated to the simulation of one-dimensional flow hydrodynamic in open channels networks (http://www.openmascaret.org). It is distributed under the GNU general public license. The code provides a generic Application Programming Interface (API) which allows an easy integration in frameworks or coupling with other simulators.

This API allows the classic main steps of a simulation: initialization, time step integration, and finalization. In addition, it is possible to access and modify all the variables and parameters disseminated in the code through a single interface. It is also possible to obtain all the information about these variables (metadata): …

Adding The Influence Of A Shallow Water Table On Hydrology, Sediment And Pesticide Transport In A Vegetative Filter Strip Model : Development Of A Mechanistic Algorithm, Coupling, And Global Sensitivity Analysis To Evaluate This New Version Of The Open Source Model Vfsmod, Claire Lauvernet, Rafael Muñoz-Carpena, Nadia Carluer

Open Water Journal

A shallow water table can significantly affect soil infiltration and surface runoff during a rainfall event. Simple and robust models used as components of larger scale hydrological models are needed to analyze the impacts of shallow water table in the landscape. Salvucci and Entekhabi (1995) and Chu (1997) proposed an approximate non-uniform Green-Ampt time-implicit integral form solutions to the infiltration case for ponded soils bounded by a water table under initial hydrostatic equilibrium.

Assessment The Spatial-Temporal Variation Of Soil Moisture In The Bibischbach Watershed, Grand-Duchy Of Luxembourg, Mohsen Tavakoli, Florimond De Smedt, Patrick Matgen

Open Water Journal

In the present work, an updated version of the Water and Energy Transfer between Soil, Plants and Atmosphere (WetSpa) model is introduced and the performance of the model is evaluated for simulated discharge and soil moisture content in the experimental Bibeschbach watershed, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The model is applied and validated for 1 year hourly data of river flow and soil moisture content. Discharge data at the outlet are used for model calibration and in situ soil moisture data recorded at 11 monitoring sites are used for validation of the model performance. The model predictions agree well with the …

Qgis/Postgis : Stacking Foss4g For Water Management, Vincent Picavet Dec 2016

Qgis/Postgis : Stacking Foss4g For Water Management, Vincent Picavet

Open Water Journal

Hydrological GIS data are widely used by public organizations, environment, water supply and water treatment companies. Water data analysis can be very specific, and is not a GIS-only field.

It is therefore interesting to look at FOSS4G applications, to see how they fit the need to have a real FOSS4G stack for water-related data handling and analysis.

Building Age-Friendly Community: Notes From The Field, Rachel Filinson, Marianne Raimondo, Maureen Maigret

Sociology Between the Gaps: Forgotten and Neglected Topics

Building age-friendly communities is a global as well as a national concern. The purpose of this paper is to explore fundamental tensions underlying the formulation of age-friendly goals and their implementation, based on a review of age-friendly projects and reflections on the journey towards age friendliness in one state (Rhode Island). The authors conducted a comprehensive investigation of the relevant literature on previous age-friendly initiatives, which included case studies of individual projects, meta-analyses of age-friendly work, and educational toolkits for promoting age-friendly community. They also collected original data from ten focus groups with older adults, interviews with key informant service …

Exploring New Paths To Academic Literacy For English Language Learners, Mayra C. Daniel, Dong-Shin Shin Dec 2016

Exploring New Paths To Academic Literacy For English Language Learners, Mayra C. Daniel, Dong-Shin Shin

TAPESTRY

This article discusses a revised paradigm for understanding the role of technology in learning in today’s 21st century’s digital world. We propose that the digital literacy that is an integral part of learners’ daily lives requires a concentrated examination. We argue that appropriate selection and incorporation of current technologies in instruction can improve today’s schoolhouse and raise the academic achievement of English language learners. This commentary addresses the ways teachers prepare to use technology effectively in literacy education for collaborative learning, for multi-modal authoring, and for the virtual classroom. Specific applications are considered and recommended for classrooms with English learners.

Tapping The Potential Of El Paraprofessionals Through Professional Development, Michaela Colombo, Qing Zhao, Heidi Perez Dec 2016

Tapping The Potential Of El Paraprofessionals Through Professional Development, Michaela Colombo, Qing Zhao, Heidi Perez

TAPESTRY

Many paraprofessionals provide instructional support to English Learners (ELs), yet little research exists regarding their preparedness. Research on paraprofessionals in special education suggests that paraprofessionals are often under-prepared for their responsibilities. This paper explores ongoing professional development (PD) for paraprofessionals using findings from a study of the first year of a 5-year PD initiative for 109 paraprofessionals who worked with ELs in a high-poverty, high-minority urban district. Study findings are derived from the analysis of 57 participant reflection journals, interviews with 12 paraprofessional participants, a focus group with six PD providers, and de-identified observation and focus group data provided by …

What’S Creative About Creative Writing? Critical Pedagogy And Transversal Creativity, Erick Piller Dec 2016

What’S Creative About Creative Writing? Critical Pedagogy And Transversal Creativity, Erick Piller

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

As creative writing studies emerges as a field, scholars should interrogate the meanings and possibilities of creativity in the educational contexts of creative writing. This article draws from the ideas of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari to propose the concept of transversal creativity, which emphasizes agency and self-invention through a realized meshing of discourses and identities—ways of speaking, writing, thinking, and being that cut across and run between established discourses and subject positions. Conceived in this light, creativity can bring critical pedagogy into the creative writing course.

Nietzsche's Spiritual Exercises, Babette Babich Dec 2016

Nietzsche's Spiritual Exercises, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Nietzsche’s third Untimely Meditation, composed in 1874, Schopenhauer as Educator, reflects upon and describes a “spiritual exercise” not unlike the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, detailing tactics and including practical advice. Thus Nietzsche’s “spiritual exercises” correspond to the traditional practice of self-cultivation, self-education, characteristic of the Stoic philosophers but also influential for the Hellenistic neo-Platonic tradition, the church fathers, and St. Augustine, author of De Magistro and the Confessions. Beyond antiquity, spiritual exercises refer to a theological practice of selfcultivation and self-discipline.

Optimism As A Mediating Factor In The Relationship Between Anxiety And News Media Exposure In College Students, Danielle Hoyt Dec 2016

Optimism As A Mediating Factor In The Relationship Between Anxiety And News Media Exposure In College Students, Danielle Hoyt

Honors Projects in Applied Psychology

Recently, media research has focused on young people to determine what effect violent media images may have on aggressive behavior, but little research has investigated the kind of psychological distress similar images may cause. What emotional impact does increased exposure to negative and even violent news coverage have on young adults? In this study, the relationship between such news media and anxiety levels is examined, as well as the possible mediating role that an optimistic life orientation may play in that relationship. It is hypothesized that the degree to which these individuals follow news media will positively correlate with their …

Robert Ward’S The Crucible: Politics And Personal Relationships In An Operatic Adaptation, Ryan F. Burns Dec 2016

Robert Ward’S The Crucible: Politics And Personal Relationships In An Operatic Adaptation, Ryan F. Burns

Doctoral Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Robert Ward’s The Crucible:

Politics and Personal Relationships in an Operatic Adaptation

Ryan Francis Burns, DMA

University of Connecticut, 2017

American composer, Robert Eugene Ward (1917-2013), made a significant contribution to the world of musical composition. His most enduring legacy is likely to remain his award-winning operatic adaptation of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, which premiered in 1961 by the New York City Opera. In politics, the personal can often be secondary, but for Ward’s opera, with political content at its very core, it is essential. By analyzing John Proctor’s relationship with his wife, Elizabeth, and his former …

Can Student Assistants Effectively Provide Chat Reference Services? Student Transcripts Vs. Librarian Transcripts, Vera J. Lux, Linda Rich

University Libraries Faculty Publications

To determine if undergraduate student information desk assistants were effectively staffing the library's chat reference service, librarians at Bowling Green State University embarked on a chat transcript analysis project, comparing the performance of librarians to student assistants. Although student desk assistants generally did not perform as well as librarians, it was concluded that with a renewed emphasis on continual oversight and training, students were a very viable option for staffing a chat reference service.

Star Wars, Syria, And Our Civil War: Bearing Witness To Atrocity And Suffering, Kevin P. Lavery

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Bear with me on this one. The American Civil War will make it into this conversation, but I have a lot of other things to talk about first. And I should also warn: minor spoilers ahead.

I was moved to silence after seeing Rogue One, the first spin-off film of the Star Wars franchise. Even now, tears creep into my eyes as I remember how it shook me. I had heard reviews claiming that it was the first Star Wars movie to put the cost of war at the center of the narrative. I hadn’t expected it to be so …
