What Use Is Instrumentalism? Conservative Pragmatism In Liberal Learning, Seth C. Vannatta Dec 2016

What Use Is Instrumentalism? Conservative Pragmatism In Liberal Learning, Seth C. Vannatta

Education and Culture

This article summarizes four archetypal responses—the reactionary, conservative, pragmatist, and presentist—to the real or perceived threat to liberal learning in higher education. I advocate a balance between the conservative and the pragmatist responses. A conservative pragmatist response resists the canonical rigidity of the reactionary; responds to the ever-evolving social demands and practices that help frame the perennial questions of liberal learning, but values the poetry of conversation and the disengagement demanded by such a conversation, even if social problems initiate the reflective inquiry. The conservative pragmatist response highlights the perennial and the evolutionary, the universal and the particular, and the …

What We Can Teach When We Teach (About) Religion, Larry A. Hickman Dec 2016

What We Can Teach When We Teach (About) Religion, Larry A. Hickman

Education and Culture

Given the increasing diversity of religious beliefs and outlooks in the United States, John Dewey’s proposals regarding “a common faith” can help educators provide the tools for their students to think critically about these and other issues related to the changing religious landscape. Particular attention is given to three groups of students: those who are adherents of dogmatic or exclusivist religious communities; those who share the belief that no legitimate value judgments about religious faith are possible; and those religiously unaffiliated students who feel excluded from the possibility of religious faith.

Minding The Pedagogical Gap: Creative Writing Studies, Common Core Standards, And The Secondary Creative Writing Moment, Chris Drew Dec 2016

Minding The Pedagogical Gap: Creative Writing Studies, Common Core Standards, And The Secondary Creative Writing Moment, Chris Drew

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

Although the Common Core Standards in English/Language Arts seem to exclude creative writing activities and lessons from secondary classrooms in favor of literary analysis and composition, current creative writing pedagogy demonstrates that such a reading of the standards is shortsighted and incorrect. By analyzing thematically-grouped standards and citing relevant creative writing pedagogues, this article argues that a majority of Common Core ELA Standards can be met by utilizing creative writing activities in the secondary classroom and that a critical moment has been reached for creative writing scholars to ensure their discipline is represented in secondary English curricula and training.

Measuring Writing Engagement And Emotional Tone In L2 Creative Writing: Implications For Interdisciplinarity, Justin Nicholes 5361162 Dec 2016

Measuring Writing Engagement And Emotional Tone In L2 Creative Writing: Implications For Interdisciplinarity, Justin Nicholes 5361162

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

In response to calls for systematic exploration of the creative writing field, this study employed a quantitative design to address two research questions: Do second language (L2) writers who enjoy creative writing in English feel different levels of narrative-writing engagement between autobiographical and critical consciousness-raising creative writing? and Does autobiographical creative writing evoke a different emotional tone from critical consciousness-raising creative writing? Statistical and computational-linguistic analysis of short story and survey data of 30 multilingual creative writers at one U.S. public university answered each question. The data presented show narrative-writing engagement for autobiographical creative writing (M = 5.35, SD …

What’S The State Of Praise In The High School Classroom?, Adrienne Stuckey Dec 2016

What’S The State Of Praise In The High School Classroom?, Adrienne Stuckey

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Of the available classroom and home reinforcers for desired student behavior, one that is free, easy to administer, and can contribute to positive interactions for both students and adults is the use of Behavior-Specific Praise (BSP; Elswick & Casey, 2011; Gable et al., 2009; Sutherland, 2000). However, researchers have for decades overlooked its possible effectiveness for high school students with and without disabilities, as demonstrated by the paucity of available studies into teacher use of BSP in high schools (e.g., Hawkins & Heflin, 2011; Simonson et al., 2010). One possible reason may rest simply on adults’ beliefs that high school …

Input And Output Method Of Personalized Answers With Chatbot, Zhou Bailiang, Guangqiang Zhang

Defensive Publications Series

A system and method for enabling a user to search for personal information through information systems such as search boxes or chatbots are disclosed. The system allows the user to store identified personal information, and retrieve this information at any time and from anywhere through a search box or similar application. A pre-defined input format is used to instruct the search engine so that personal information inputs are distinguishable from other common search queries. The user can retrieve the information through the usual searching techniques or by asking a question to the system and the answer is returned as a …

Religion In Sense And Sensibility, Erin R. Toal Dec 2016

Religion In Sense And Sensibility, Erin R. Toal

The Kabod

Jane Austen’s first major novel that was published, Sense and Sensibility, exemplifies the shifting perspectives in religion during the Georgian period by exploring the virtues of its title through the lenses of the Anglicanism of Georgian England. This paper argues that Sense and Sensibility reflects Jane Austen’s worldview and identifies how it stems from the Neoclassical and Romantic fusion present in her religious belief.

The Merida Initiative: Perceptions, Interests And Security Cooperation In The Mexico-U.S. Relationship (2006-2012), Alberto Lozano-Vázquez

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation asserts that bilateral cooperation can be possible when specific perceptions and identities -socially constructed- converge between two states, creating subsequently rational incentives to cooperate strategically. Both states can derive domestic and international benefits from mutual cooperation materialized through a specific bilateral policy. However, the evaluation of such cooperative program requires, as another stage of analysis, different analytical tools based on materialist and constructivist criteria opening then the possibility to find successes and failures simultaneously in the same bilateral policy. Taking the Merida Initiative as a case study of security cooperation, this research engages in the analysis of the …

A Soldier And His Many Hats: The Evolution Of American Military Headgear, Jonathan E. Tracey Dec 2016

A Soldier And His Many Hats: The Evolution Of American Military Headgear, Jonathan E. Tracey

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Military headgear is a fascinating topic. It exists on a spectrum from the gaudy to the protective, but how did headgear evolve with the military? Interestingly, changes from the decorative to the practical can be examined through this blog’s favorite topic, the 1800s and the American Civil War. By tracing key changes in American military headgear in the 1800s, ideas about the nature of war, as well as how the United States was distancing itself from Europe, become clear.

Integration In Little Rock Area, Part 5: Are Students Moves More Integrative Or Segregative?, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

School integration has been a contentious policy issue in Little Rock since the 1950s. Recent charter expansions have raised questions about the current level of integration in public schools (charter and traditional) in the Little Rock metro area. As part of our series on integration in Little Rock, this brief examines the impact of student moves on the overall level of integration in the Little Rock area public school system.

Advances Of Cone Penetration Testing In Earthquake Engineering Applications, Robb E.S. Moss, R. Moffat Dec 2016

Advances Of Cone Penetration Testing In Earthquake Engineering Applications, Robb E.S. Moss, R. Moffat

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Cone Penetration Test (CPT), because of its precision, accuracy, and utility has been increasingly used in earthquake engineering applications in the last decade. This paper provides a brief survey of recent advances in applying the CPT to; liquefaction triggering, post-liquefaction deformations, cyclic failure of clays, dynamic slope stability, and seismic site response. In granular soils the continuous CPT measurements of tip and sleeve resistance are well correlated with the engineering properties of relative density and friction angle. In clay soils the CPT tip resistance is directly proportional to the undrained shear strength. CPT measurements are ideal for weak or …

ADAM10 and ADAM17 have been shown to contribute to the acquired drug resistance of HER2-positive breast cancer in response to trastuzumab. The majority of ADAM10 and ADAM17 inhibitor development has been focused on the discovery of compounds that bind the active site zinc, however, in recent years, there has been a shift from active site to secondary substrate binding site (exosite) inhibitor discovery in order to identify non-zinc-binding molecules. In the present work a glycosylated, exosite-binding substrate of ADAM10 and ADAM17 was utilized to screen 370,276 compounds from the MLPCN collection. As a result of this uHTS effort, a selective, …
