Background. In the recent years there has been a significant exposure to relatively new media for communication. The online social media networking engines has not only facilitated the business organization but has opened the gateways of expression for the consumers. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are now considered one of the key media to initiate a campaign which becomes viral in no time. A high percentage of such campaigns are based on social justice related to the violence, criminal, and injustice incidents taking place in Pakistan. The objective of this study was to identify factors that are leading to potential engagement …

Parallel Session: Viral Marketing Via The New Media: The Case Of Communication Behavior In Whatsapp, Wan Yu Chong, Yusniza Kamarulzaman
International Conference on Marketing
WhatsApp is the number one smartphone application in Malaysia. With its enormous user base, WhatsApp is a platform with considerable potential for viral marketing, which is a form of electronic word-of-mouth. Past literature indicates that the success of viral marketing greatly depends on a user’s decision to forward viral content, with the user’s intention being the key factor leading up to it. Although different models have been proposed in electronic word-of-mouth viral marketing behaviour, these platforms do not work entirely the same way as WhatsApp, which is a mobile instant messaging application. In addition, the factors affecting the user’s participation …

Parallel Session: Moving Towards Sustainable Consumption: A Study Of Reduce, Reuse And Recycle (3rs) Adoption Among Malaysians, Regina Yan Ginny, Yusniza Kamarulzaman
International Conference on Marketing
Over the last decade, rapid globalization, industrial development, economic growth and technological advancement has resulted in population growth and unprecedented changes to the social and cultural lifestyle in Malaysia. One of the dramatic increase was witnessed in the consumption of goods and services due to the rising household income and progressive consumption-oriented lifestyles. On one hand, it helps to stimulate economic activities, but on the other hand, it poses threat to the diversity and stability of the natural environment in various ways. Hence, the key purpose of this study is to identify the factors that affects Reduce, Reuse and Recycle …

Art-Integration Through Making Dioramas Of Women Mathematicians’ Lives Enhances Creativity And Motivation, Audrey C. Rule, Dana L. Atwood-Blaine, Clayton M. Edwards, Mindy M. Gordon
Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts, and Constructions
Creativity is essential for solving problems in the workplace, natural environment, and everyday life, necessitating that creativity be nurtured in schools. Identification of factors that intrinsically motivate students to learn difficult or initially unappealing content is also important. This project, in which 24 racially diverse fifth grade girls created dioramas of the lives of diverse successful women mathematicians, explored the girls’ reactions to art integration into mathematics through a phenomenological qualitative analysis of their products, essays, and responses to questionnaires. The project supported the Next Generation Science Standard for engineering design, Standard 3-5-ETS1-1 and two National Core Arts Standards for …

“The Battle-Fortune Of Marshal Hindenburg Is Not Bound Up With The Possession Of A Hill”: The Germans And Vimy Ridge, April 1917, Holger Herwig
Canadian Military History
On 9 April 1917 four Canadian divisions and one British division of 170,000 men broke through the “Vimy Group” of German Sixth Army of some 40,000 men. By late afternoon, the Germans had been driven off the Ridge. That day, as Brigadier-General Alexander Ross famously put it, constituted “the birth of a nation.” Rivers on ink have been spilled in the Canadians’ actions that day, but little attention has been paid to “the other side of the hill.” Which German units defended the Ridge? What was the quality of their leadership? Why did the defence collapse so quickly? Why did …

The Effects Of Frequency Of Social Interaction, Social Cohesion, Age, And The Built Environment On Walking, Gretchen Allison Luhr
The Effects Of Frequency Of Social Interaction, Social Cohesion, Age, And The Built Environment On Walking, Gretchen Allison Luhr
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this dissertation was to explore, through a social ecological framework, the multifaceted effects of the neighborhood environment by investigating how dimensions of both the built environment and the neighborhood social context may interact to influence walking. Aesthetics, land use mix, crime, and pedestrian infrastructure were considered with respect to built environment walkability, and the neighborhood social context was conceptualized using measures of both social cohesion and social interaction with neighbors. This research used data from an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-funded study of 748 adults (18 years of age and older) residing in the Lents neighborhood in Portland, …

The Impact Of Authentic Leadership Behavior On Employee Engagement And Organizational Ethical Culture In Nigeria, Adayehi B. Peter
The Impact Of Authentic Leadership Behavior On Employee Engagement And Organizational Ethical Culture In Nigeria, Adayehi B. Peter
Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations
Authenticity in leadership is an old phenomenon that has recently sparked a new research interest in management and the human resource development (HRD) literature (Peus, Wesche, Streicher, Braun, & Frey, 2012). An upswing in highly publicized corporate scandals, management malfeasance, and broader societal challenges facing public and private organizations has contributed to the recent attention placed on authenticity and authentic leadership (Walumbwa, Avolio, Gardner, Wernsing, & Peterson, 2008). Authentic leadership behavior allows leaders and organizations meet the raised expectations of fairness, morality, and social responsibility held by employees and organizational stakeholders (Kiersch, 2012).

Laboring Down: A Pretest-Posttest Educational Study, Kristen Eberlein
DNP and Student Works
The primary aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an educational video in increasing labor and delivery nurses' knowledge of laboring down. The secondary study aim was to determine if the educational intervention affected nurses' anxiety levels when caring for patients who are laboring down. Nurses took an anxiety measure test and a knowledge test before and after watching the educational video. The results of the difference in knowledge pre-intervention to post-intervention achieved statistical significance (t = 3.22, df =14, p = .006). The mean number of correct answers increased from 5.87 (SD = 1.96) …

Historical Trauma And Refugee Reception: Armenians And Syrian-Armenian Co-Ethnics, Nicole M. Campos
Historical Trauma And Refugee Reception: Armenians And Syrian-Armenian Co-Ethnics, Nicole M. Campos
Master's Theses
This thesis considers the ways in which Armenian history has influenced integration of Syrian-Armenian refugees into Armenia due to the ongoing Syrian War. Ethnic Armenian outlooks were analyzed relative to the influx of Syrian refugees, particularly co-ethnic Syrian-Armenians. Field work in Armenia found a sustained cultural impression of Armenians’ Soviet membership and genocide. Findings suggest that recognizing the importance of history as it may or may not affect migration reception policies and attitudes is important to developing sustainable resettlement environments, at least until repatriation or third-country resettlement becomes an option to migrants. Ultimately, this thesis argues that more attention must …

Witness: Reflections On Detention In Joyce Carol Oates's Work, Tanya L. Tromble
Witness: Reflections On Detention In Joyce Carol Oates's Work, Tanya L. Tromble
Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies
Throughout her career, Joyce Carol Oates has resisted the urge of others to label her a feminist writer, insisting that she be considered a writer, independent of biological gender. As America’s “chronicler of the middle class,” she has given voice to countless invisible female character types, but this is only one concern among many. Oates is incredibly active, but rather than to actively incite, she uses her prolific pen to create testimonies to contemporary American life, seeking particularly to give voice to the voiceless among us. In spite of the notions of crime and justice being central to her fiction …
A Cognitive Approach To Phonology: Evidence From Signed Languages, Corrine Occhino
A Cognitive Approach To Phonology: Evidence From Signed Languages, Corrine Occhino
Linguistics ETDs
This dissertation uses corpus data from ASL and Libras (Brazilian Sign Language), to investigate the distribution of a series of static and dynamic handshapes across the two languages. While traditional phonological frameworks argue handshape distribution to be a facet of well-formedness constraints and articulatory ease (Brentari, 1998), the data analyzed here suggests that the majority of handshapes cluster around schematic form-meaning mappings. Furthermore, these schematic mappings are shown to be motivated by both language-internal and language-external construals of formal articulatory properties and embodied experiential gestalts.
Usage-based approaches to phonology (Bybee, 2001) and cognitively oriented constructional approaches (Langacker, 1987) have recognized …

Methods: Participants reported their alcohol use and strenuous physical activity on 2 occasions (baseline and follow-up) spaced approximately 1 or 2 years apart. Results: For females, alcohol use quantity at baseline was associated with increased strenuous physical activity at 1- and 2-year follow-ups, and alcohol use frequency at baseline was …
The Comorbidity Of Communication And Psychological Disorders: An Analysis Of The Origin And Prevalence Of Children Presenting With Comorbid Language, Speech, And Psychological Disorders, Victoria L. Triska
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This paper addresses the comorbidity of communication and psychological disorders in children by gathering and analyzing research on communication disorders, psychological disorders, and approaches to understand their connection and present a possible origin of these two disorders. Using the transactional model, one can understand the comorbidity of these disorders and of an individual's psychological environment, communicative environment, and the relationship between these two spheres. The impacts on academics and social life can cause learning disabilities, reading disabilities, and social isolation from friends, teachers, and family. Furthermore, understanding disorders' origin allows for researchers to better assess the prevalence of speech, language, …

Moving After Baby: Developing Informed Dance/Movement Therapy Interventions For Symptoms Of Postpartum Depression, Tonia Levison
Moving After Baby: Developing Informed Dance/Movement Therapy Interventions For Symptoms Of Postpartum Depression, Tonia Levison
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This thesis was a phenomenological study, which investigated the lived experience of four women who had changes in mood and behavior postpartum. The purpose of this study was to fully understand the actual experience of women going through the changes instead of basing interventions off of a list of symptoms in a book. The study culminated in the development of three client centered dance/movement therapy interventions to treat the changes in mood and behavior that the participants experienced in hopes of preventing a formal diagnosis of postpartum depression. This study expanded the literature related to the treatment of postpartum depression, …

Being In Relationship: The Experience Of A Female Dance/Movement Therapy Intern On A Male Residential Unit For Sexually Problematic Behaviors, Krista Tyner
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This study serves to explore the experience of a female dance/movement therapy intern working with males on a residential unit for sexually problematic behaviors. It enlightened me on how it was to be in relationship with them, through both a mind and body therapeutic lens. It addresses stereotypes and preconceived notions pertaining to this population. The questions attempted to be answered were as follows: How is it to be in relationship with males who are on a residential unit for sexually problematic behavior, as a female dance/movement therapy intern? How do I experience male/female relationships, gender, and sexuality on the …
