Skill Mastery And The Formation Of Graduate Identity In Bachelor Graduates: Evidence From Australia, Denise Jackson
Skill Mastery And The Formation Of Graduate Identity In Bachelor Graduates: Evidence From Australia, Denise Jackson
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Mastery of certain generic skills and the successful formation of pre-professional identity are widely considered to influence graduate work-readiness and job attainment. Given their links with enhanced productivity, performance and innovation, skill development and graduate identity appear critical amidst ongoing global stagnation in advanced economies. This paper focuses on the success of higher education in developing generic skills and graduate identity using national data (n = 80,891) for 51 providers. It investigates the influence of certain demographics, study and degree characteristics on these important areas of undergraduate curricula. Furthermore, it gauges recent graduate perceptions on the importance of skill development …
A Preliminary Investigation Into Worry About Mental Health: Development Of The Mental Health Anxiety Inventory, Della Commons, Kenneth M. Greenwood, Rebecca A. Anderson
A Preliminary Investigation Into Worry About Mental Health: Development Of The Mental Health Anxiety Inventory, Della Commons, Kenneth M. Greenwood, Rebecca A. Anderson
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background:
Worry about physical health is broadly referred to as health anxiety and can range from mild concern to severe or persistent anxiety such as that found in DSM-IV hypochondriasis. While much is known about anxiety regarding physical health, little is known about anxiety regarding mental health. However, recent conceptualizations of health anxiety propose that individuals can experience severe and problematic worry about mental health in similar ways to how people experience extreme worry about physical health.
Aims:
Given the paucity of research in this area, the aim of the current study was to explore anxiety regarding mental health through …
Resilience As Resistance To The New Managerialism: Portraits That Reframe Nursing Through Quotes From The Field, Vicki Cope, Bronwyn Jones, Joyce Hendricks
Resilience As Resistance To The New Managerialism: Portraits That Reframe Nursing Through Quotes From The Field, Vicki Cope, Bronwyn Jones, Joyce Hendricks
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Aim:
This paper acknowledges the relationship between resilience and the new managerialism of contemporary nursing.
Methods:
Qualitative portraiture methodology.
Discussion:
The new managerialism in hospital settings results in a rapidly increasing turnover of acutely ill or comorbid patients, which directly relates to retention and quality service. In education settings, the management imperative to recruit more students into the profession combined with financial cutbacks leads to similar tensions. In aged care the trend equates care directly with funding, with the same effect. Yet despite this, many registered nurses remain working. Portraiture explored 'why' nurses remain in workplaces often described as awful. …
Episodic Volunteering And Retention: An Integrated Theoretical Approach, Melissa K. Hyde, Jeff Dunn, Caitlin Bax, Suzanne K. Chambers
Episodic Volunteering And Retention: An Integrated Theoretical Approach, Melissa K. Hyde, Jeff Dunn, Caitlin Bax, Suzanne K. Chambers
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Episodic volunteers (EVs) are vital for non-profit organization activities. However, theory-based research on episodic volunteering is scant and the determinants of episodic volunteering are not well understood. This study integrates the volunteer process model and three-stage model of volunteers’ duration of service to explore determinants of EV retention. A cross-sectional survey of 340 EVs assessed volunteering antecedents, experiences, and retention. Social/enjoyment (β =.17) and benefit (β = −.15) motives, social norm (β =.20), and satisfaction (β =.56) predicted Novice EV (first experience) retention, satisfaction (β =.47) and commitment (β =.38) predicted Transition EV (2-4 years intermittently) retention, and supporting the …

Stick Or Switch: A Selection Heuristic Predicts When People Take The Perspective Of Others Or Communicate Egocentrically, Shane Rogers, Nicholas Fay
Stick Or Switch: A Selection Heuristic Predicts When People Take The Perspective Of Others Or Communicate Egocentrically, Shane Rogers, Nicholas Fay
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper examines a cognitive mechanism that drives perspective-taking and egocentrism in interpersonal communication. Using a conceptual referential communication task, in which participants describe a range of abstract geometric shapes, Experiment 1 shows that perspective-taking and egocentric communication are frequent communication strategies. Experiment 2 tests a selection heuristic account of perspective-taking and egocentric communication. It uses participants' shape description ratings to predict their communication strategy. Participants' communication strategy was predicted by how informative they perceived the different shape descriptions to be. When participants' personal shape description was perceived to be more informative than their addressee's shape description, there was a …

Using Technology, Bioinformatics And Health Informatics Approaches To Improve Learning Experiences In Optometry Education, Research And Practice, Vivek K. Gupta, Veer B. Gupta
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Rapid advances in ocular diagnostic approaches and emerging links of pathological changes in the eye with systemic disorders have widened the scope of optometry as the front line of eye health care. Expanding professional requirements stipulate that optometry students get a meticulous training in relevant information and communication technologies (ICT) and various bioinformatics and health informatics software to meet current and future challenges. Greater incorporation of ICT approaches in optometry education can facilitate increased student engagement in shared learning experiences and improve collaborative learning. This, in turn, will enable students to participate in and prepare for the complex real-world situations. …

The Emotional Intelligence Of Registered Nurses Commencing Critical Care Nursing, Yvette Nagel, Amanda Towell, Elzabe Nel, Fiona Foxall
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background: Critical care is described as complex, detailed healthcare in a unique, technologically rich environment. Critical care nursing requires a strong knowledge base and exceptional clinical and technological skills to cope in this demanding environment. Many registered nurses (RNs) commencing work in these areas may lack resilience, and because of the stress of the critical care environment, coping mechanisms need to be developed. To prevent burnout and to enable critical care nurses to function holistically, emotional intelligence (EI) is essential in the development of such coping mechanisms.
Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the EI …

Enhancing Student Learning By Narrowing The Gap Between Feedback Giving And Feedback Receiving, Eileen Goold
Enhancing Student Learning By Narrowing The Gap Between Feedback Giving And Feedback Receiving, Eileen Goold
Conference Papers
Feedback is one of the most powerful influences on learning and achievement. However the mere provision of feedback to students does not necessarily lead to improved learning. Feedback is ineffective if it does not close the gap between learning goals and students’ performance. Often students do not have clear goals and they do not know what learning activities will improve their learning performance. Consequently the opportunity to learn from the feedback is lost. Learning is a social process and while young people have increasingly strong social needs they struggle with academic language. This study investigates the influence of lecturers’ feedback …

Resolving Perception Based Problems In Human-Computer Dialogue, Niels Schütte
Resolving Perception Based Problems In Human-Computer Dialogue, Niels Schütte
Doctoral
We investigate the effect of sensor errors on situated human computer dialogues. If a human user instructs a robot to perform a task in a spatial environment, errors in the robot's sensor based perception of the environment may result in divergences between the user's and the robot's understanding of the environment. If the user and the robot communicate through a language based interface, these problems may result in complex misunderstand ings. In this work we investigate such situations. We set up a simulation based scenario in which a human user instructs a robot to perform a series of manipulation tasks, …
Counterfeit Industry And The Link To Terrorism, Holly Barbara Holt
Counterfeit Industry And The Link To Terrorism, Holly Barbara Holt
Apparel Design and Hospitality Management
The purpose of this research study is to explore whether consumers would be complicit in the purchase of counterfeit goods once becoming aware of the counterfeit industry being linked to terrorism. Counterfeit goods are defined as identical copies of authentic products and they are produced without the permission of the registered owner (Carpenter & Lear, 2011). Almost any product can be counterfeited from clothing, shoes, jewelry, handbags and even medicines. Counterfeit products are sold at a fraction of the cost of the authentic product. This study identifies the ‘why’ to consumer complicity to purchase the counterfeit items. There are legalities …

Juvenile Life Without Parole In Law And Practice: Chronicling The Rapid Change Underway, John Mills, Anna M. Dorn, Amelia Courtney Hritz
Faculty Scholarship
This Article provides a comprehensive examination of juvenile life without parole ('"LWOP") both as a policy and in practice. Beginning in 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly held that the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution restricts the reach of JLWOP sentences, first prohibiting it for non-homicide offenses, then proscribing its mandatory application for any offense, and, in 2016, clarifying that it may only be imposed in the rare instance in which a juvenile's homicide demonstrates his or her "irreparable corruption. " The legislative responses to these cases have been to either abandon or restrict JLWOP's application. These legislative …

Managing Stress Among Librarians In Selected University Libraries In Ogun State Nigeria, Promise Ilo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
Stress is evident in every workplace, irrespective of type or location. This study revealed that librarians experience stress in federal, state and private universities. However, there are variations in the levels of stress experienced by librarians from private, state and federal universities. According to the findings, there is no significance difference in the causes of stress among the various kinds of libraries studied. The causes are rather evident in physical, environmental, organizational, cultural, and managerial factors. There is high prevalence of stress among women of child bearing age as a result of the interface between home and the workplace. …
