Antecedents And Consequences Of Procedural Fairness Perceptions In Personnel Selection: A Three-Year Longitudinal Study, Udo Konradt, Yvonne Garbers, Martina Böge, Berrin Erdogan, Talya N. Bauer
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
Drawing on Gilliland’s (1993) selection fairness framework, we examined antecedents and behavioral effects of applicant procedural fairness perceptions before, during, and after a personnel selection procedure using a six-wave longitudinal research design. Results showed that both perceived post-test fairness and pre-feedback fairness perceptions are related to job offer acceptance and job performance after 18 months, but not to job performance after 36 months. Pre-test and post-test procedural fairness perceptions were mainly related to formal characteristics and interpersonal treatment, whereas pre-feedback fairness perceptions were related to formal characteristics and explanations. The impact of fairness attributes of formal characteristics and interpersonal treatment …

Family Involvement In Camp Adventure Child And Youth Services, Kimber Alexandra Bell
Graduate Research Papers
The basic social unit of society is the family (Benokraitis, 2003). Aristotle wrote that the family is "nature's established association for the supply of mankind's everyday wants" (Walsh, 2006, p. 76). The terrnfamily has multiple meanings. Traditionally, it is defined as "a social unit living together" or "parents and their children, whether dwelling together or not" (Benokraitis, 2003, p. 4). Families are connected with each other through bloodlines such as brothers, sisters, nephews, cousins etc., or a rite of passage or ritual that recognizes the person as a part of the family such as marriage, adoption or initiation. Western societies …

Identifying valid and informative approaches for assessing young English learners (ELs) is essential for school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs). The present paper focuses on two distinct approaches for assessing English grammatical development, a key component and indicator of language development for ELs. The approaches addressed are standardized normreferenced assessment and grammatical feature coding from story retell narratives. The authors review the utility of these approaches for evaluating the English grammatical development of Spanish-speaking ELs. A research example is provided to illustrate how a small sample (n = 18) of ELs performed on each of these English-based tasks. Findings reveal that children …

Flirting Online And The Connection Between The Use Of Dating Websites And Dating Applications, Kristine Johnson, Olguta Vilceanu, Manuel C. Pontes
AMTP Proceedings 2016
For this research, we used data collected by the Pew Foundation's "Internet and American Life Project Tracking Survey," conducted in Spring 2013. The data was adjusted through the use of sampling weights to estimate for general population parameters. The collected data examined online flirting, use of dating websites, and the use of dating apps. Findings suggest women between the ages of 18-34 years are just as likely as men to signal their romantic interest by engaging in online flirtation. In addition, women ages 50 years or older are less likely than men to signal their romantic interest by engaging in …

Taking Trust Seriously In Privacy Law, Neil Richards, Woodrow Hartzog
Faculty Scholarship
Trust is beautiful. The willingness to accept vulnerability to the actions of others is the essential ingredient for friendship, commerce, transportation, and virtually every other activity that involves other people. It allows us to build things, and it allows us to grow. Trust is everywhere, but particularly at the core of the information relationships that have come to characterize our modern, digital lives. Relationships between people and their ISPs, social networks, and hired professionals are typically understood in terms of privacy. But the way we have talked about privacy has a pessimism problem – privacy is conceptualized in negative terms, …

Criminal Laws On Sex Work And Hiv Transmission: Mapping The Laws, Considering The Consequence, Sienna Baskin, Aziza Ahmed, Anna Forbes
Faculty Scholarship
Lawmakers historically justify the mobilization of criminal laws on prostitution and HIV as a means of controlling the spread of disease. Over time, however, public health research has conclusively demonstrated that criminal laws on prostitution and HIV significantly impede the ability of sex workers to access services and to live without the stigma and blame associated with being a transmitter of HIV. In turn, mainstream public health approaches to sex work and HIV emphasize decriminalization as a way to improve the lives of sex workers in need of care, treatment, and services. Our current legal system, which criminalizes both prostitution …

The purpose of this study was to contribute to the debate over the value of the Ph.D. versus the Ed.D. in higher Education. A mixed methods design was used to explore why some institutions simultaneously offer two tracks to the higher Education doctorate (Ph.D. and Ed.D.) and the difference between programs at institutions where only one track to the doctorate was offered. Specifically, I aimed to identify the level of distinction between these two types of doctoral degrees. The differences were examined between the Ph.D. and the Ed.D. in higher Education in terms of programs rationale, mission, admission requirements, curricula, …
Premorbid Personality Indicators: A Tool To Identify Those Who Have Liability For Schizophrenia, Daniel V. Hudak Jr.
Premorbid Personality Indicators: A Tool To Identify Those Who Have Liability For Schizophrenia, Daniel V. Hudak Jr.
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Schizophrenia is an often-debilitating mental illness whose etiology remains unknown, although a number of conceptualizations have been suggested. Among the most prominent of these conceptualizations is the diathesis-stress model, which posits that liability to the disorder is genetically mediated, although ultimate expression is dependent upon exposure to various environmental stressors. Meehl (1962) is arguably most responsible for this conceptualization of schizophrenia. Identifying those who are liable for schizophrenia has the potential to inform treatment which may lead to better outcomes. In an effort to better understand the developmental process of schizophrenia and to identify those who may be at increased …

Self-Expansion As A Motivation For Playing Mmorpgs, Mark Lowe
Self-Expansion As A Motivation For Playing Mmorpgs, Mark Lowe
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game (MMORPG) is an immersive game that combines social aspects which allow gamers to meet and form relationships with other players in order to complete in-game objectives. Current theories of motivation for playing these games focus on three primary components: Achievement, Social, and Immersion (Yee, 2012). The present study suggested that Self-Expansion theory may enhance our understanding as to why people play games, especially social games such as MMORPGs. Self-Expansion theory argues that people are innately driven to expand their sense of self by establishing close relationships, increasing personal resources, collecting meaningful items, and seeking …

The Clinical Utility Of Standardized Test Observation In Diagnosis Of Adhd, Sarah K. Thomas
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical utility of a standardized observation measure in the diagnostic assessment of ADHD in children. Evidenced-based assessment of ADHD recommends the use of multiple informants and multiple methods, and ADHD diagnostic criteria requires impairment in at least two settings. Commonly, parent and teacher reports of child behavior differ and blur the diagnostic picture, so standardized observations during testing may provide additional useful diagnostic information. Archival data from 140 children (age 5 – 12) referred to a university-based ADHD evaluation clinic was utilized in the present study. Testing observations measured by the …
The Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Religiosity: Factors That Influence Transprejudice, Katherine M. Lindner
The Intersection Of Race, Gender, And Religiosity: Factors That Influence Transprejudice, Katherine M. Lindner
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Trans people are people who do not conform to traditional gender roles due to presenting themselves as a gender not assigned from birth. Transprejudice refers to negative attitudes toward trans people. The intersectionality perspective proposes that individuals have multiple identities (such as sexual orientation, gender, and race) that influence the amount of power society gives them (Worthen, 2013). Attitudes toward hypothetical trans persons were examined in a sample of 713 undergraduates. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions where trans person gender and race were manipulated. After reading a vignette, participants were asked to evaluate the character on …
The Role Of Mindfulness And Spirituality In Facilitating Acceptance And Striving Towards Goals, Ashley Bauer
The Role Of Mindfulness And Spirituality In Facilitating Acceptance And Striving Towards Goals, Ashley Bauer
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mindfulness and spirituality are both constructs with research support for a wide array of positive health outcomes, from increased rate of survival from disease to decreased rate of relapse from mental illness. They also have potential utility in medical, Educational, and social services sectors. Although the constructs have been related theoretically, there has been little empirical evidence to support this notion, in part due to the conflation of spirituality and religiosity, and the heterogeneity of measures available. ThisDissertation aimed to contribute to the growing literature investigating the intersection of mindfulness and spirituality while carefully taking into account the construct validity …

New Australian Plants And Animals. An Exhibition - And - Physiology, Phenomenology And Photography: Picturing The Indeterminate Within An Australian Art Practice. An Exegesis, Michael Gray
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This practice-led research project investigates indeterminate aspects of perception related to human vision and postcolonial conditioning. Through an inventive range of lens-based artworks, the research draws parallels between preconscious visual phenomena and the subjective experience of non-indigenous Australians of multiple generations.
The resulting body of creative work, New Australian Plants and Animals, can be seen to approach preconscious visual phenomena derived from the physiology of the human eye through the use of primitive photographic lens technology. This process is applied to the subject matter: introduced plants and partially naturalised migrants. This synthesis of subject and materials creates new insights …

Focus On The Journey, Not The Destination: Digital Games And Students With Disability, Susan Main, John O'Rourke, Julia Morris, Helen Dunjey
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The way in which technologies support students with disability has been widely explored in recent times. Much of this research has focused on computer programs specifically designed to teach social and academic skills to students with disability. In the research reported in this paper we examined how students with disability could use technology designed for the general market. The impetus for the study was the principle of normalisation, which espouses that people with disability should have the opportunity to share in experiences of their same-aged peers. In previous research we demonstrated the benefits of using the commercially available hand-held games …

Investigation Of The Relationship Between Chronic Stress And Insulin Resistance In A Chinese Population, Yuxiang Yan, Huanbo Xiao, Sisi Wang, Jing Zhao, Yan He, Wei Wang, Jing Dong
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Background:
Chronic stress may facilitate the development of metabolic diseases. Insulin resistance is present long before the clinical manifestations of individual metabolic abnormalities. To explore whether chronic stress is an independent risk factor of insulin resistance, we investigated the relationship between the stress system, selected parameters of energy homeostasis, and insulin resistance in a Chinese population.
Methods:
We recruited 766 workers employed at four companies in Beijing. The degree of insulin resistance was determined using the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). The highest quartile of HOMA-IR among all study subjects was further defined as insulin resistance in our …
Root Cause Approach To Prisoner Radicalisation, Nathan Thompson
Root Cause Approach To Prisoner Radicalisation, Nathan Thompson
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Prison radicalisation in Australia has become a key focal point for the subject literature on radicalisation. However, while attention has been directed at identifying and apprehending violent extremists, less consideration has been given to what could be done with these people when convicted. This paper applies the 'root cause model' to prisoner radicalisation to investigate the environmental, social and individual influences that contribute to radicalisation in prisons. This examination took a holistic view of the prison radicalisation process that is based on causal factors rather than the traditional 'phase model' approach. It is argued that this is an important step …
Seeking Complex Health Services In The Age Of Self-Referral, Lindsay R.L. Larson, Dora E. Bock
Seeking Complex Health Services In The Age Of Self-Referral, Lindsay R.L. Larson, Dora E. Bock
AMTP Proceedings 2016
This study investigates the relationship between consumers’ information search and service satisfaction, specifically focused on the search for mental health professionals. The selection of a mental health provider is of interest because practitioners work from a highly diverse set of theoretical bases, may hold a wide range of different credentials and provide drastically different therapeutic approaches, therefore making the selection complex and difficult for consumers to self-navigate. Data sampling from patients of mental health suggest that consumers selecting a provider based on self-performed searches, rather than receiving external input (referrals from physicians, relatives, or friends), report lower satisfaction with their …

Be Your Own Guru: Authoritarianism And The Problem Of The Guru In Conscious Evolution, Mcauley, Charles E.
Journal of Conscious Evolution
This paper is an exploration of the problematic nature of the guru/disciple relationship, specifically, in Western Society. It begins with a discussion of the nature of spirituality and the spiritual quest. To contextualize the process, I also discuss my own spiritual path based in Roman Catholicism, Taoism, Buddhism and my thoughts on the philosophy of Krishnamurti. I explore the topic of the authoritarian follower in some depth. Its connection is symbiotic to the existence of the authoritarian leader. This connection is demonstrated within this paper as well. Additionally, I look at the flaws in some well-known guru figures and how …
