Evaluating A Staff-Child Interaction Therapy Workshop For Home-Based Mental Health Providers: Effects On Therapist Skill Change, Cree Robinson
Evaluating A Staff-Child Interaction Therapy Workshop For Home-Based Mental Health Providers: Effects On Therapist Skill Change, Cree Robinson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The current study attempted to evaluated the effectiveness of a one-day training workshop used to train bachelor's level mental health staff in Staff-Child Interaction Therapy (SCIT), a newly developed intervention designed to reduce problem behaviors in children 2- to -9 years of age through the use of behavioral management techniques by home-basedtrained staff. A total of 39 therapists, known as Therapeutic Support Staff (TSS), were involved in this study, 20 who received training in SCIT (i.e., experimental group) and 19 who received received training in Compassion Fatigue (i.e., attention -control group). This study was a part of a larger outcome …
Confessions In An International Age: Re-Examining Admissibility Through The Lens Of Foreign Interrogations, Julie Tanaka Siegel
Confessions In An International Age: Re-Examining Admissibility Through The Lens Of Foreign Interrogations, Julie Tanaka Siegel
Michigan Law Review
In Colorado v. Connelly the Supreme Court held that police misconduct is necessary for an inadmissible confession. Since the Connelly decision, courts and scholars have framed the admissibility of a confession in terms of whether it successfully deters future police misconduct. As a result, the admissibility of a confession turns largely on whether U.S. police acted poorly, and only after overcoming this threshold have courts considered factors pointing to the reliability and voluntariness of the confession. In the international context, this translates into the routine and almost mechanic admission of confessions— even when there is clear indication that the confession …

Listening To Their Voices: An Ethnographic Study Of Children's Values And Meaning Ascribed To Learning World Music In Elementary School General Music, Juliana Cantarelli Vita
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The primary purpose of this ethnographic study is to examine the values and meaning children ascribe to learning world music in an elementary school general music program. This research seeks to explore the potential of world music pedagogies for deepening children's understanding of music and its sociocultural context more completely. The participants in this study included fourth-grade students and their music teacher who designed and taught a Music-Culture Curricular Unit on Afro-Brazilian traditions. Data include field notes of music classes collected during seven weeks of observations, focus group and individual interviews with fourth-grade students, audio and video recordings, conversations with …
Cross-Spectral Full And Partial Face Recognition: Preprocessing, Feature Extraction And Matching, Zhicheng Cao
Cross-Spectral Full And Partial Face Recognition: Preprocessing, Feature Extraction And Matching, Zhicheng Cao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cross-spectral face recognition remains a challenge in the area of biometrics. The problem arises from some real-world application scenarios such as surveillance at night time or in harsh environments, where traditional face recognition techniques are not suitable or limited due to usage of imagery obtained in the visible light spectrum. This motivates the study conducted in the dissertation which focuses on matching infrared facial images against visible light images. The study outspreads from aspects of face recognition such as preprocessing to feature extraction and to matching.;We address the problem of cross-spectral face recognition by proposing several new operators and algorithms …
An Examination Of The Buffering Effect Of Positive Emotions On Cardiovascular Reactivity And Recovery, Casey E. Cavanagh
An Examination Of The Buffering Effect Of Positive Emotions On Cardiovascular Reactivity And Recovery, Casey E. Cavanagh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Positive emotions are related to improved physical and mental health. One potential mechanism through which positive emotions affect physical health is by reducing cardiovascular reactivity to stress and enhancing recovery from stress. The undoing hypothesis proposes physiological recovery from stressful events can be improved by induction of positive emotions. Although there is some research supporting the undoing hypothesis, the evidence is largely mixed. The purpose of the present study was to compare two methods of inducing positive emotions to determine if one method was superior at inducing positive emotions and thereby determine how each method affected cardiovascular recovery from stress …
Supplementing Art Therapy With Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Cbt) And Dialectical Behavior Therapy (Dbt) During Treatment Of Childhood Anxiety Disorders: A Pilot Study, Rachel Cecil
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A qualitative research study presents a thorough examination of one therapist's methods of supplementing art therapy with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) during the treatment of children impaired by a variety of anxiety disorders---i.e. generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PSTD). A review of the existing literature was used to inform the current study. The researcher created an exploratory case study, through the utilization of a pilot study, to gain a better understanding of the topic from an expert in these therapeutic fields. Through the gathering of data and analysis, the …
The Opinions And Attitudes Of Police Officers To Proposed Changes To Law Enforcement, Jason C. Contessa
The Opinions And Attitudes Of Police Officers To Proposed Changes To Law Enforcement, Jason C. Contessa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The field of policing has recently come under the public scrutiny due to the events surrounding the deaths of several citizens at the hands of police officers. Although not the first time policing has been criticized, the issues have caused the country to become increasingly divided on whether or not American police forces are in need of reform. There has been an overwhelming amount of complaints against law enforcement and suggestions to improve policies. As political and public figures have taken sides and police administration has made statements regarding the issues, the voices of those that would be most affected …
Childhood Obesity Among Young Children Living In Poverty And Associations With Activity Level, Food Choices, And Parental Perceptions, Ashlee Cunningham
Childhood Obesity Among Young Children Living In Poverty And Associations With Activity Level, Food Choices, And Parental Perceptions, Ashlee Cunningham
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Young children living in poverty are exposed to a number of barriers in their environment that put them at risk for physical health problems, specifically obesity and increased BMI. Physical activity level, food choices, and parental perceptions of children's weight are barriers to healthy weight in children and can consequently lead to other future developmental problems. A population of low income, preschool aged children was examined using measures of child BMI, parental income, parental education, fast food consumption, amount of TV watched, and parental perceptions of children's weight. Findings showed child BMI was related to children watching more TV in …

Qualitatively Assessing Background Factors Of Criminal Captive-Takers, Erin E. Grinnan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Captive-taking is an inclusive category of criminal behavior that encompasses kidnapping, hostage situations, and certain acts of terrorism within both domestic and international contexts. To date, the existing research examining the individuals that commit captive-taking events and their backgrounds has been minimal. Gaining a deeper understanding of these individuals and their backgrounds may better prepare the individuals that are charged with intervening in captive-taking events including law enforcement, military personnel, and psychologists who assist in negotiation procedures.;This dissertation is drawn from a pilot study consisting of interviews with seven, incarcerated individuals convicted of captive-taking. The purpose of this dissertation was …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
My MFA written thesis addresses work completed and shown in a thesis exhibition at West Virginia University as well as significant influences to my studio process. While my focus is printmaking, the work presented in the exhibition consists of several sculptural and photographic pieces. This thesis, along with the supporting exhibition, will address my investigations into extending Minimalism's anonymity and relational aesthetics while adhering to my own predetermined artistic parameters. The work is concerned with observed form and composition along with the transformation of mundane and knowable materials into uncertain sculptures that highlight their physical properties. I emphasize the material …
The Influence Of Slanted Ground Surfaces On Trunk Biomechanics And Stability During Trunk Bending, Boyi Hu
The Influence Of Slanted Ground Surfaces On Trunk Biomechanics And Stability During Trunk Bending, Boyi Hu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Previous studies have shown that working on uneven ground surfaces is linked to alternations of the lumbar active and passive tissue load sharing mechanism and reductions in spinal stability, which is highly associated with the risk of low back pain. The purpose of the current research was to investigate the changes of the lumbar flexion relaxation phenomenon and lumbar segmental stability while working on slanted ground surfaces. In experiment one, fourteen male participants performed sagittal plane, trunk flexion-extension tasks on three laterally slanted ground surfaces (flat ground, 15° and 30°) while their lumbar muscle activities and trunk kinematic performances were …
The Age Of Intervention: Addiction, Culture, And Narrative During The War On Drugs, Ashleigh M. Hardin
The Age Of Intervention: Addiction, Culture, And Narrative During The War On Drugs, Ashleigh M. Hardin
Theses and Dissertations--English
While addiction narratives have been a feature of American culture at least since the early 19th century’s temperance tales, the creation of the Johnson Intervention in the late 1960s and the corresponding advent of the War on Drugs waged by U.S. Presidents have wrought significant changes in the stories told about addiction and recovery. These changes reflect broader changes in conceptions of agency and the relationship of subject to culture in the postmodern era. In the way that it iterates the imperatives of the War on Drugs initiated by Richard Nixon, the rhetoric of successive U.S. Presidents provides a …
Patriarchal Trauma In Appalachian Literature, Michelle Justus
Patriarchal Trauma In Appalachian Literature, Michelle Justus
Theses and Dissertations--English
Patriarchal Trauma in Appalachian Literature examines the effects of subjugation on women as it is represented in three novels set in Appalachia. I define patriarchal trauma as an act causing mental anguish to a woman and perpetrated against her because she is a woman. I use the term to encompass violent, catastrophic harms but more particularly to pinpoint the traumatic effects of the quotidian, systemic deprivation of women’s autonomy. Reconsidering classic texts such as James Still’s River of Earth and Robert Morgan’s Gap Creek: The Story of a Marriage as narratives of women’s trauma establishes a lineage on the subject, …
Life Matter: Women Subjects And Women's Objects In Innovative American Poetry, Jenna L. Goldsmith
Life Matter: Women Subjects And Women's Objects In Innovative American Poetry, Jenna L. Goldsmith
Theses and Dissertations--English
Gertrude Stein, Lyn Hejinian, and Juliana Spahr employ innovative poetic practices attuned to nature and environment in order to understand their personal lives and depict these understandings for readers. My dissertation investigates how these poets enact an inclusive posture toward environment that many innovative and experimental women poets of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries possess, but are rarely recognized for. To this end, my dissertation provides counterarguments to characterizations of innovative or experimental poetic practices as reclusive, language-centric, opaque, and/or disconnected from the material world. I offer readings of poems, prose pieces, film, and art, to illustrate how materially innovative …

Assessment Of Molecular Action Of Direct Gating And Allosteric Modulatory Effects Of Meprobamate (Miltownrtm) On Gaba A Receptors, Manish Kumar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Meprobamate (tradenames Miltown, Equanil) is a schedule IV anxiolytic and the primary metabolite of the muscle relaxant carisoprodol. Meprobamate modulates GABAA (gamma-aminobutyric acid type A) receptors, and has been described as having barbiturate-like activity. A thorough understanding of its mechanism remains ill-defined, however. To gain insight into its actions, we have conducted a series of studies using recombinant GABAA receptors. In alphaxbetazgamma2 GABAA receptors (where x = 1-6 and z = 1-3), the ability to enhance GABA-mediated current was evident for all alpha subunit isoforms, with the largest effect observed in alpha5-expressing receptors. Direct gating was comparable with all alpha …
Attrition In Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Brittany K. Liebsack
Attrition In Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Brittany K. Liebsack
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Attrition is a significant problem in child psychotherapy (De Haan, Boon, De Jong, Hoeve, & Vermeiren, 2013) and has serious implications. These include limited effectiveness of interventions for mental and behavioral health problems and decreases in staff productivity, access to services, and the number of people an agency can serve (Barrett et al., 2008). Predictors of attrition include those at the client, family, therapist, and treatment levels. The current study investigated the pattern of and variables associated with attrition in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an evidence-based parent training program for families with young children (ages 2.5- to 7-years-old) with disruptive …
An Exploration Of The Relationships Between Chronic Pain, Inflammation, And Herbal Medicine, Termeh Feinberg
An Exploration Of The Relationships Between Chronic Pain, Inflammation, And Herbal Medicine, Termeh Feinberg
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Introduction: Inflammation is often a component of chronic pain, yet its potential role in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) remains inconclusive. FMS is a complex chronic pain condition affecting ~2% of the population; management is challenging and treatment options remain limited. Many herbs contain anti-inflammatory properties, and herbs indicated for analgesia and rheumatic conditions have traditionally been used in Appalachia. Despite the popularity of herbs in the US, determinants and patterns of herbal use with regard to pain management have not been well studied, particularly in Appalachia, where prevalence of chronic pain and related comorbid conditions is high and access to medical …
Perceptions Of Urban Forestry Employers, Andrew Benjamin
Perceptions Of Urban Forestry Employers, Andrew Benjamin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Urban forestry is still a relatively new area of science and is still trying to establish itself as a legitimate scientific field and profession. Often urban forestry and arboriculture are conflated, and urban forestry has yet to achieve much of what arboriculture has in terms of recognition its and establishment. Landscape architects, traditional foresters, environmental scientists, horticulturalists all may find themselves in positions that can be classified in the urban forestry profession, which shows this lack of a standard definition for what is an urban forester. While there are many significant, potential benefits to a properly managed urban forest resource …
Signaling Changes In Reinforcer Ratios Facilitates Adaptive Forgetting In Pigeons, Daniel Bell-Garrison
Signaling Changes In Reinforcer Ratios Facilitates Adaptive Forgetting In Pigeons, Daniel Bell-Garrison
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Forgetting is often characterized as maladaptive, but if a cue no longer signals the consequences of a response, then forgetting the previously learned stimulus-response discrimination is adaptive. Pigeons pecked for food in concurrent schedules of reinforcement. The relative frequency of food delivery on each key changed pseudorandomly across sessions with an overnight break in the middle of each session. New sessions began immediately after the last food delivery in the previous session. When the change from one session to the next was not signaled, responses remained under the control of the previous session's ratio of reinforcement. When the session change …

This study details how gender bias plays out in everyday workplace interactions in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). It is based on in-depth interviews with 60 women scientists of color (chiefly professors), and a survey of 557 women scientists (of all races). Different types of gender bias were reported at different rates. Prescriptive gender bias was most common (76.3% of women interviewed reported it), followed by descriptive gender bias (66.7%) and gender bias triggered by motherhood (64.0%); just over half of the women interviewed (55.3%) reported situations in which gender bias against women fueled conflicts among women. The survey …
