E-Government Services Adoption And Interdependence: Granger Causality Analysis, Shashi Kant Srivastava, Sanjog Ray Nov 2016

E-Government Services Adoption And Interdependence: Granger Causality Analysis, Shashi Kant Srivastava, Sanjog Ray

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Adoption of e-government services varies across the different categories of services: government to citizen services, utility services, commercial services, informational services, social benefit services and mobile based services. Faced with constraint of resources, policy makers devising strategies for better adoption of these services face the challenge of prioritizing among these categories of services. This paper attempts to address this challenge by showing the applicability of Granger causality analysis in studying the causation analysis between the categories of e-government services. We prove the applicability of Granger causality analysis in understanding the independence between e-government service categories by analyzing real transactions data …

The Pros And Cons Of Workplace Tournaments, Roman M. Sheremeta Nov 2016

The Pros And Cons Of Workplace Tournaments, Roman M. Sheremeta

ESI Working Papers

Tournaments are commonly used in the workplace to determine promotion, assign bonuses, and motivate personal development. Tournament-based contracts can be very effective in eliciting high effort, often outperforming other compensation contracts, but they can also have negative consequences for both managers and workers. The benefits and disadvantages of workplace tournaments have been identified in theoretical, empirical, and experimental research over the past several decades. Based on these findings, I provide suggestions and guidelines for when it might be beneficial to use tournaments in the workplace.

Three Essays On The Theory Of Money And Financial Institutions Essay 2: The Exchange Economy, Money, And Markets, Martin Shubik Nov 2016

Three Essays On The Theory Of Money And Financial Institutions Essay 2: The Exchange Economy, Money, And Markets, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This essay is the second of three. The first is nontechnical and in part autobiographical describing the evolution of my approach to developing a micro economic theory of money and financial institutions. This essay is devoted to a mathematical sketch of a closed economic exchange system with general equilibrium GE and rational expectations RE viewed game theoretically. It squeezes the last drop out of statics and an illusory dynamics in the form of the RE extension of GE with no other externalities beyond money and markets. The third essay builds on process models adding uncertainty, innovation, an active government, nonsymmetric information …

Incentivizing Healthy Eating In Children: An Investigation Of The “Ripple” And “Temporal” Effects Of Reward-Based Interventions, Saied Toossi Nov 2016

Incentivizing Healthy Eating In Children: An Investigation Of The “Ripple” And “Temporal” Effects Of Reward-Based Interventions, Saied Toossi

Center for Policy Research

Although previous studies have established the effectiveness of using small reward-based incentives in inducing the choice and consumption of healthier foods among children, little is known about their impact outside of experimental settings or their effectiveness over time when administered daily. This paper presents the results of a field experiment conducted to provide insight on these matters. The study employs a pretest-posttest within-subject design and was conducted at a summer program catering to low-income children between the ages of 5 and 12. Corroborating existing studies, the introduction of small reward-based incentives was found to induce large increases in the number …

Learning In Complex Environments: The Effects Of Background Speech On Early Word Learning, Brianna T.M. Mcmillan, Jenny R. Saffran Nov 2016

Learning In Complex Environments: The Effects Of Background Speech On Early Word Learning, Brianna T.M. Mcmillan, Jenny R. Saffran

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Although most studies of language learning take place in quiet laboratory settings, everyday language learning occurs under noisy conditions. The current research investigated the effects of background speech on word learning. Both younger (22- to 24-month-olds; n = 40) and older (28- to 30-month-olds; n = 40) toddlers successfully learned novel label–object pairings when target speech was 10 dB louder than background speech but not when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was 5 dB. Toddlers (28- to 30-month-olds; n = 26) successfully learned novel words with a 5-dB SNR when they initially heard the labels embedded in fluent speech without background …

Rao-Lovric And The Triwizard Point Null Hypothesis Tournament, Shlomo Sawilowsky Nov 2016

Rao-Lovric And The Triwizard Point Null Hypothesis Tournament, Shlomo Sawilowsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The debate if the point null hypothesis is ever literally true cannot be resolved, because there are three competing statistical systems claiming ownership of the construct. The local resolution depends on personal acclimatization to a Fisherian, Frequentist, or Bayesian orientation (or an unexpected fourth champion if decision theory is allowed to compete). Implications of Rao and Lovric’s proposed Hodges-Lehman paradigm are discussed in the Appendix.

Qualitative Analysis Methods Review, Mona Mohamed, Mohamed Af Ragab, Amr Arisha Nov 2016

Qualitative Analysis Methods Review, Mona Mohamed, Mohamed Af Ragab, Amr Arisha

Reports

Qualitative research plays an important role in business research. The popular research methods that researchers used are; Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods. Researchers who conduct qualitative studies, often struggle to pick the best technique to analyse their data. This report aims to present six different methods that can be used to analyse qualitative data collected for business studies. A comparison between the techniques is found useful to present in order to help decision made by researchers who are embarking upon qualitative research studies. Qualitative Analysis Methods (QAM) can be used in some of the mixed-methods approaches as appropriate.

Functional Mri In The Presence Of Repetitive, Sub-Concussive Impacts, Trey E. Shenk Nov 2016

Functional Mri In The Presence Of Repetitive, Sub-Concussive Impacts, Trey E. Shenk

Open Access Dissertations

Recent research has raised understanding and awareness of the long-term risks associated with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). While much research has focused on the role of concussion (a single event exhibiting clear clinical symptoms), the role of repetitive sub-concussive impacts is not well understood. This study uses functional MRI measurements of high school football players to identify functional changes, even in the absence of clinical symptoms.

Chiral Separation And Quantitation Of Khat Designer Drug- Synthetic Cathinones- In Urine And Plasma, Rashed Humaid Khalfan Bin Huzaim

Accounting Dissertations

This dissertation is concerned with the latest class of the new designer drugs (NDDs) which overruns the world in the last few years as “legal high” drugs, under the name of bath salts or synthetic cathinones. Bath salts are a group of central nervous system stimulants that consists mainly of synthetic cathinone derivatives. In nature, cathinone (β-keto amphetamine) exists in the leaves of the Catha edulis plant which can be found easily in the region of northeast Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. All synthetic cathinone derivatives contain a chiral center and most probably sold out as a racemic mixture. Commonly, …

Ashamed And Afraid: A Scoping Review Of The Role Of Shame In Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd), Tanya Saraiya, Teresa Lopez-Castro Nov 2016

Ashamed And Afraid: A Scoping Review Of The Role Of Shame In Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd), Tanya Saraiya, Teresa Lopez-Castro

Publications and Research

Background: Despite considerable progress in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a large percentage of individuals remain symptomatic following gold-standard therapies. One route to improving care is examining affective disturbances that involve other emotions beyond fear and threat. A growing body of research has implicated shame in PTSD’s development and course, although to date no review of this specific literature exists. This scoping review investigated the link between shame and PTSD and sought to identify research gaps. Methods: A systematic database search of PubMed, PsycInfo, Embase, Cochrane, and CINAHL was conducted to find original quantitative research related to shame …

An Examination Of How Adult English Second Language Learners Learn Pronunciation Skills, Joni Pagnotta Nov 2016

An Examination Of How Adult English Second Language Learners Learn Pronunciation Skills, Joni Pagnotta

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This study examined research questions regarding differences in intelligibility levels of spoken English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and the use of pronunciation drills between two groups: control and treatment. The goal of this study was to discover if even short-term use of dedicated pronunciation drills (simple tongue twisters and voice exercises) in the EFL classroom was sufficient to significantly improve pronunciation in the target language. This study also examined some of the historical pedagogies and methodologies used in pronunciation teaching. Lastly, this research investigated whether or not there were any correlations between the use of and non-use of dedicated …

Interpersonal Dynamics In Assessment Center Exercises: Effects Of Role Player Portrayed Disposition, Tom Oliver, Peter Hausdorf, Filip Lievens, Peter Conlon Nov 2016

Interpersonal Dynamics In Assessment Center Exercises: Effects Of Role Player Portrayed Disposition, Tom Oliver, Peter Hausdorf, Filip Lievens, Peter Conlon

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although interpersonal interactions are the mainstay of many assessment center exercises, little is known about how these interactions unfold and affect participant behavior and performance. More specifically, participants interact with role players who have been instructed to demonstrate behavior reflecting specific dispositions as part of the exercise. This study focuses on role player portrayed disposition as a potentially important social demand relevant to participant behavior and performance in interpersonal simulations. We integrate interpersonal theory and trait activation theory to formulate hypotheses about the effects of role player portrayed disposition on participant behavior and performance in 184 interpersonal simulations. A significant …

The Interpretive Approach As A Means Of Understanding The Misunderstood, Doreen Molloy, Joyce Hendricks, Anne Williams Nov 2016

The Interpretive Approach As A Means Of Understanding The Misunderstood, Doreen Molloy, Joyce Hendricks, Anne Williams

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

People’s experiences of health and illness are important areas of health research and practice. The interpretive process, and more significantly the biographical approach (Denzin, 1989), is an approach in which there is a focus on personal epiphanies which shape and reflect the stories people tell of their experiences. Dolby-Stahl (1985) contends stories of personal experience sit within the genre of folklore and that the reading of such stories must take into account the social, cultural, and historical contexts which influence and give meaning to experience.

Can Asians Be Creative?, Chua, Roy Y. J., Jerry Zremski

A crotchety American named Henry Ford invented a modern, fast and efficient way to manufacture automobiles and a Japanese man named Eiji Toyoda refined and perfected it. A series of innovators across the western world developed the television - and the tech specialists at Sony, Toshiba and a host of other Asian companies found ways to make TVs better, cheaper, faster. And an idiosyncratic Californian named Steve Jobs invented a company that made a smart phone for the masses - and then outsourced the manufacturing to China. If you detect a pattern here, you are not alone. Asia may be …

Valuation Uncertainty, Market Sentiment And The Informativeness Of Institutional Trades, Lisa Yang, Jeremy Goh, Chiraphol N. Chiyachantana Nov 2016

Valuation Uncertainty, Market Sentiment And The Informativeness Of Institutional Trades, Lisa Yang, Jeremy Goh, Chiraphol N. Chiyachantana

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Prior studies indicate that institutional investors are informed, in the sense that their trades predict price changes. In this study we show that return predictive ability of institutions arises (after controlling for size, book-to-market, and momentum) mainly from institutional sales of hard-to-value stocks during periods of positive market sentiment. These results support the notion that these stocks tend to be overvalued during periods of bullish market sentiment, and institutions contribute to market efficiency by identifying and trading on these overpriced stocks.
