Anthropomorphic Denial Of Fish Pain, Lynne U. Sneddon, Matthew C. Leach Jan 2016

Anthropomorphic Denial Of Fish Pain, Lynne U. Sneddon, Matthew C. Leach

Animal Sentience

Key (2016) affirms that we do not know how the fish brain processes pain but denies — because fish lack a human-like cortex — that fish can feel pain. He affirms that birds, like fish, have a singly-laminated cortex and that the structure of the bird brain is quite different from that of the human brain, yet he does not deny that birds can feel pain. In this commentary we describe how Key cites studies that substantiate mammalian pain but discounts the same kind of data as evidence of fish pain. We suggest that Key's interpretations are illogical, do not …

Why Is Fish “Feeling” Pain Controversial?, E. Don Stevens Jan 2016

Why Is Fish “Feeling” Pain Controversial?, E. Don Stevens

Animal Sentience

In his excellent target article, Key (2016) develops a mechanistic argument in an attempt to show why it is unlikely that fish can “feel” pain or for that matter, “feel” anything. The topic is controversial and likely to achieve the goal of getting many hits for the inaugural issue of the new journal, Animal Sentience. In my view, the question is unlikely to be answered, for two reasons. First, because the proponents of the “fish feel pain” controversy are untrained and unskilled in the details and jargon of neurophysiology and/or neuroanatomy, and the opponents of the controversy, like Key, …

How Not To Move The Line Drawn On Pain, Bjorn H. Merker Jan 2016

How Not To Move The Line Drawn On Pain, Bjorn H. Merker

Animal Sentience

In this second commentary I outline the inadequacy of Key's responses to the many peer critiques of his thesis that have so far appeared in Animal Sentience. I illustrate with examples drawn from his response to my first commentary.

Understanding Workday Ego Depletion And The Role Of Gratitude Recovery Techniques, Alexandria Steele Jan 2016

Understanding Workday Ego Depletion And The Role Of Gratitude Recovery Techniques, Alexandria Steele

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Everyday activities require the use of self-control resources to regulate behaviors. Ego depletion is the idea that the use of self-control resources on one task results in reduced self-control resources for subsequent tasks. The current study aims to examine ego depletion as a result of a simulated workplace task, design a gratitude recovery technique for workplace ego depletion, and observe child punishment as a potential outcome of workplace ego depletion. A dual-task procedure in which participants completed a complex logic assessment while also listening to a background narrative mimicked workplace environments. Gratitude recovery consisted of recalling people, items, or events, …

The Impact Of Empathy Training On Perceptions Of Substance Use Disorders, Kelsea Magel Jan 2016

The Impact Of Empathy Training On Perceptions Of Substance Use Disorders, Kelsea Magel

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Negative attitudes and stigma toward individuals with mental health disorders, particularly substance use disorders, undoubtedly exist in communities around the globe. Lund and Boggero (2014) propose that negative attitudes toward mental health disorders have existed throughout history and across cultures, and there is an ongoing concern of how individuals with mental illness are affected by these negative attitudes (Poreddi, Thimmaiah, Pashupu, Ramachandra, & Badamath, 2014). Increasing levels of empathy in individuals has shown to decrease overall magnitude of negative attitudes; most empathy training tasks, however, are extensive and last several months. The current study examined the possibility of reducing negative …

Female Natural Bodybuilding Competition Preparation: A 6-Week Case Study, Samantha G. Gwazdauskas Jan 2016

Female Natural Bodybuilding Competition Preparation: A 6-Week Case Study, Samantha G. Gwazdauskas

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Bodybuilding is unlike any other sport. Competitors are judged on appearance rather than performance, where muscle size and definition are keys to achieving success. This case study tracked four, drug-free, female bodybuilders for 6-weeks leading up to their competitions. The purpose of this project was to examine the physiological and psychological experiences of female bodybuilders as they prepare for competition. Each competitor reported for testing at three occasions to evaluate cardiovascular measures, body composition, resting metabolic rate, performance measures of strength, power, muscular endurance, and maximal oxygen consumption, mood state, social physique anxiety, and overall experience. Each subject in this …

The Perspectives Of School Resource Officers On Job Responsibilities And Training, Sarah Parker Jan 2016

The Perspectives Of School Resource Officers On Job Responsibilities And Training, Sarah Parker

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

As school security measures are increasing, including the use of school resource officers (SRO) throughout the United States, there is a concern that these officers are being used as disciplinarians rather than being in the schools to ensure student safety. There is very little research that looks at the job expectations for SROs and if the training they receive reflects what is required of them. To address this issue, this study will provide the perspectives that SROs have on their job responsibilities, what they believe their responsibilities should be, and if the training they received reflects those responsibilities. This study …

The Behavioral, Biochemical And Genetic Effects Of Sleep Deprivation In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Jade Catherine Boykin Jan 2016

The Behavioral, Biochemical And Genetic Effects Of Sleep Deprivation In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Jade Catherine Boykin

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Vertebrate sleep is a universal phenomenon and encompasses an array of conserved behavioral and physiological characteristics. Studies of sleep in humans have shown that sleep deprivation leads to adverse effects to human health and additional stress. Teleosts have emerged as a useful model species to study the vertebrate stress response, given its stress axis has high levels of homology with the mammals, including humans. For this study, the behavior of zebrafish (Danio rerio) subjected to acute (24 hours) and chronic (20 days) extended light exposure was monitored and whole-body cortisol was analyzed as an indication of activation of …

The Complex Dichotomies Of Student Affairs Practitioners' Perceived Competencies: A Quantitative Evaluation Of Self-Awareness, Jami K. Hall Jan 2016

The Complex Dichotomies Of Student Affairs Practitioners' Perceived Competencies: A Quantitative Evaluation Of Self-Awareness, Jami K. Hall

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This study examines the perceived competencies and the perceived self-awareness of student affairs practitioners. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between the two variables of competencies and self-awareness. The overarching research question for this study was: What is the relationship between self-awareness and perceived competencies for student affairs practitioners? This question was followed by two sub questions: To what degree, if any, does experience in the field as a student affairs practitioner predict one’s self-awareness of professional competencies? To what degree, if any, does job level/position in the field as a student affairs practitioner …

Istar First Light: Characterizing Astronomy Education Research Dissertations In The Istar Database, Stephanie J. Slater, Coty B. Tatge, Paulo S. Bretones, Timothy F. Slater, Sharon P. Schleigh, David H. Mckinnon, Inge Heyer

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

There is widespread interest among discipline-based science education researchers to situate their research in the existing scholarly literature base. Unfortunately, traditional approaches to conducting a thorough literature review are unduly hindered in astronomy education research as the venues in which scholarship is reported are fragmented and widely dispersed across journals of varying disciplines. The international STudies of Astronomy education Research (iSTAR) online repository is the result of a concerted international community effort to collect and categorize existing research from peer-reviewed journal articles, dissertations/theses, and grey literature. In a “first light” survey of over 300 U.S. dissertations, we find: (i) work …

Gone But Not Forgotten: Recognizing The Right To Be Forgotten In The U.S. To Lessen The Impacts Of Data Breaches, Ashley Stenning Jan 2016

Gone But Not Forgotten: Recognizing The Right To Be Forgotten In The U.S. To Lessen The Impacts Of Data Breaches, Ashley Stenning

San Diego International Law Journal

This Comment will explore the right to be forgotten, how it is recognized in the European Union, and the trend toward the existence of such a right in the United States. Additionally, this comment will discuss how the right to be forgotten could lessen the impact data breaches have on individuals through the lens of the Ashley Madison hack. Lastly, this comment will discuss how, if the United States narrowed the scope of the European Union’s concept of the right to be forgotten to fit into the United States’ view of privacy and the First Amendment, the impact of data …

Christopher Columbus Langdell And The Public Law Curriculum, Peter L. Strauss Jan 2016

Christopher Columbus Langdell And The Public Law Curriculum, Peter L. Strauss

Faculty Scholarship

Teaching materials in public law courses typically rely almost wholly on judicial opinions as their primary materials, amplified by selections from the secondary literature. Constitutional text may appear independently, but statutory text rarely does, and the materials of the legislative process are generally absent. In administrative law course books, administrative opinions and the materials of rulemaking rarely fever appear. Yet these are primary materials with which lawyers must deal with increasing frequency. Lawyers encounter statutes, rules, administrative policies, and administrative disputes without judicial guidance, looking forward and not backward in time. The growth of courses in legislation and the regulatory …

Cyber Force: The International Legal Implications Of The Communication Security Establishment's Expanded Mandate Under Bill C-59, Leah West Jan 2016

Cyber Force: The International Legal Implications Of The Communication Security Establishment's Expanded Mandate Under Bill C-59, Leah West

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

Canada is about to join the ranks of Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea; countries with a declared policy and authorized program of state-sponsored cyber attacks. In the summer of 2017, the Liberal Government introduced Bill C-59 An Act 2 Respecting National Security Matters. The bill, if passed, represents the most significant overhaul to Canadian national security institutions since the establishment of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) as a separate organization from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in 1984. One component of this sweeping reform is the introduction of The Communications Security Establishment Act (CSE Act or the …

Data-Driven Elections And Political Parties In Canada: Privacy Implications, Privacy Policies And Privacy Obligations, Colin J. Bennett Jan 2016

Data-Driven Elections And Political Parties In Canada: Privacy Implications, Privacy Policies And Privacy Obligations, Colin J. Bennett

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

In light of the revelations concerning Cambridge Analytica, we are now in an era of heightened publicity and concern about the role of voter analytics in elections. Parties in Canada need to enhance their privacy management practices and commit to complying with national privacy principles in all their operations. As shown in this article’s comparative analysis of the privacy policies of federal and provincial political parties in Canada, policies are often difficult to find, unclear, and, with a couple of exceptions, do not address all the privacy principles. Accountability and complaints mechanisms are often not clearly publicized, and many are …

Legitimate Invasions: What Ontario Can Learn From The History Of The Consumer Reporting Act, Eliie Marshall Jan 2016

Legitimate Invasions: What Ontario Can Learn From The History Of The Consumer Reporting Act, Eliie Marshall

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

The growth of modern surveillance has attracted great public and scholarly interest. As Justice Abella recently noted in Douez v. Facebook, the Internet has transformed the potential harms flowing from an unjustified invasion of one’s personal information. Most analyses of the associated risks, however, imply that the techniques and motivations for surveillance are new. In fact, tactics for collecting and exchanging information about individuals to gain power over those individuals are well documented since time immemorial. From William the Conquerer’s Domesday Book to IBM’s first census tabulating machine, the advantage gained through data sharing has greatly benefited the state. The …

Yik Yak Posts: A Discourse Analysis, Snehal Ravindra Shirke

Masters Theses

"Anonymity and geolocation create a unique environment for users to communicate with each other. Discourse analysis was conducted to study the posts made on Yik Yak, an anonymous social networking mobile application to understand the communication patterns on an anonymous platform and the posts about taboo topics. The posts were analyzed specifically for patterns on taboo topics and how students interact on the anonymous platform on a particular campus (Missouri S&T campus). Student research assistants coded the collected posts into the pre-defined taboo categories namely sexual activity, non-sexual bodily functions, sexual orientation, mental/emotional health, and "other" taboo topics. I found …
