The Utility Of Key Hate Crime Concepts, Katie Pratt Jan 2016

The Utility Of Key Hate Crime Concepts, Katie Pratt

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This paper seeks to ascertain what exactly are the most important or relevant aspects of hate crime that we need to understand in order to address this most pernicious of acts. Whilst the UK conceptualization of hate crime was borne out of mass media attention on some key violent events, the official responses that followed were heavily shaped by a populist punitive view of how to address the issue. This paper discusses the limitations of the understanding of this issue and instead suggests a broader view of the underlying issue and causal factors as representative of patterns of prejudice and …

The Absent Voice Of Male Domestic Abuse Victims: The Marginalisation Of Men In A System Originally Designed For Women, Coralie Wright Jan 2016

The Absent Voice Of Male Domestic Abuse Victims: The Marginalisation Of Men In A System Originally Designed For Women, Coralie Wright

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The problematic construction of domestic abuse as a 'gendered, heterosexual phenomenon that is predominantly physical in nature' has served to marginalise male victims of domestic abuse (Donovan and Hester, 2010:279), and impeded them from reaching victim status (Josolyne, 2011). As such, in comparison to women, men receive less recognition as victims within society, and support services are tailored towards the needs of female victims. Relatively little research has been undertaken on the experiences of male victims of domestic abuse, and thus it remains unclear how it is best to support them. This study adopts a qualitative approach to explore the …

A Point Of Justice - Granted Or Fought For? Women's Suffrage Campaigns In Plymouth And The West Country, Judith Rowbotham, Kim Stevenson Jan 2016

A Point Of Justice - Granted Or Fought For? Women's Suffrage Campaigns In Plymouth And The West Country, Judith Rowbotham, Kim Stevenson

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The release of the film Suffragette in October 2015, surprisingly the first major feature film on the women's suffrage movement, has raised public consciousness about the issue of women's rights and the role of the suffragettes in demanding votes for women with their call to arms of 'deeds, not words'. But decades before the Women's Social and Political Union was created in 1903 campaigners across the country had begun the struggle for emancipation for women. We argue that the film therefore needs to be seen in a wider context including the high level of male support for the cause and …

The Changing Face Of Domestic Abuse Service Provision, Gemma Henderson Jan 2016

The Changing Face Of Domestic Abuse Service Provision, Gemma Henderson

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This article aims to explore the changing reality of domestic abuse service provision to victims of domestic abuse in the South West of England. By interviewing the professionals who work with the victims, it explores how cuts to funding is altering provisions for victims and multi-agency working and the realities of the move to tendering via the commissioning process. Results illustrate that austerity measures and government reforms have negatively affected domestic abuse service provision over recent years. Not only are there fewer services available but also changes in social policy are forcing the specialist domestic abuse charities to be replaced …

As for the variables that influenced the tax morale are gender, religious observance, and the perception of the importance of the government.

Whither Reasonable Suspicion: The Supreme Court's Functional Abandonment Of The Reasonableness Requirement For Fourth Amendment Seizures, Steven P. Grossman Jan 2016

Whither Reasonable Suspicion: The Supreme Court's Functional Abandonment Of The Reasonableness Requirement For Fourth Amendment Seizures, Steven P. Grossman

All Faculty Scholarship

Although the United States Supreme Court’s approach to issues governing application of the probable cause requirement of the Fourth Amendment has mutated over the years, at least one aspect of its approach has remained constant. Before information leading to probable cause or its lesser iteration of reasonable suspicion is found to exist, the government must demonstrate in some meaningful way the reliability of the person providing the information or of the information itself. Lacking such reliability, no search or seizure based on probable cause or reasonable suspicion is permitted. In its recent decision in Navarette v. California, the Court largely …

Decriminalizing Violence: A Critique Of Restorative Justice And Proposal For Diversionary Mediation, M. Eve Hanan Jan 2016

Decriminalizing Violence: A Critique Of Restorative Justice And Proposal For Diversionary Mediation, M. Eve Hanan

All Faculty Scholarship

The movement to reduce over-prosecution and mass incarceration has focused almost exclusively on non-violent offenders despite data showing that over half of all prisoners incarcerated within the United States are sentenced for crimes of violence. As a consequence of the focus on nonviolent offenses, the majority of current and future defendants will not benefit from initiatives offering alternatives to criminal prosecution and incarceration.

A discussion of alternatives to the criminal justice system in cases of violent crime must begin by acknowledging that violent crime is not monolithic. Many incidents meet the statutory elements of a violent crime, that is, the …

Putting Public Law Into “Private” Sport, Dionne L. Koller Jan 2016

Putting Public Law Into “Private” Sport, Dionne L. Koller

All Faculty Scholarship

Across all levels of sport—professional, Olympic, intercollegiate, interscholastic, and youth recreational—the prevailing view is that the government should not take an active role in regulating athletics. As a result, there are relatively few federal or state statutes directed at regulating sports, and those that are aimed at sports primarily serve to support the professional sports industry. Moreover, courts show great deference to sports leagues and administrators, most often applying law in a way that insulates and empowers them. This creates a climate where leagues and administrators are permitted wide latitude to structure and conduct their respective sports as they see …

Optimised Mammogram Displays For Improved Breast Cancer Detection, Graeme Alexander Riley Jan 2016

Optimised Mammogram Displays For Improved Breast Cancer Detection, Graeme Alexander Riley

Other Faculty of Health Theses

In current mammography practice, radiologists typically view mammograms in a symmetric, side-by-side, configuration in the belief that abnormalities will be made salient because they break the perceived symmetry. The literature on the use of symmetry as an aid to signal detection is limited and this thesis has taken a psychophysical approach to investigate the radiologist’s task of detecting a small mass (a blob) in paired mammogram backgrounds. Initial experiments used Gaussian white noise and synthetic mammogram backgrounds to test observer performance for the radiologist’s task using symmetric (side-by-side) displays and animated (the two images of a pair alternated sequentially in …

The Restorative Potential Of Public Aquariums: Psychological And Physiological Effects Of Viewing Sub-Aquatic Environments, Deborah Louise Cracknell Jan 2016

The Restorative Potential Of Public Aquariums: Psychological And Physiological Effects Of Viewing Sub-Aquatic Environments, Deborah Louise Cracknell

Other Faculty of Health Theses

The role of natural environments, especially ‘green space’, in promoting human health and well-being is well-researched. However, less is known about the benefits of ‘blue space’ (e.g. the coast) or ‘managed’ nature (e.g. zoos). In this thesis, six studies investigated the restorative potential of sub-aquatic settings, specifically public aquariums and the biological diversity within them. Studies 1 and 2 investigated preferences for, affective responses to, and the restorative potential of, five built and natural settings (i.e. built, green space, blue space, natural underwater and public aquariums). Using the same measures, Study 3 focused solely on people’s responses to aquarium exhibits, …

An Exploration Of Attachment Strategies Among Young People Who Engage In Harmful Sexual Behaviour, Bartosz Zaniewski Jan 2016

An Exploration Of Attachment Strategies Among Young People Who Engage In Harmful Sexual Behaviour, Bartosz Zaniewski

Other Faculty of Health Theses

Background: It is estimated that adolescent offenders account for 65% of contact child sexual abuse. A range of explanatory theories and models of intervention have been proposed. These are mainly based on cognitive theories with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and psycho-education remaining as the dominant models of treatment intervention. This research explored the issue of harmful sexual behaviour from the psychosocial perspective, drawing on attachment theory and social constructionism. Aim: The research explored attachment strategies among young people with harmful sexual behaviour. It examined young people’s understanding and explanations regarding their sexually abusive behaviour. This included an exploration of how …

A Retro-Projected Robotic Head For Social Human-Robot Interaction, Frédéric C. Delaunay Jan 2016

A Retro-Projected Robotic Head For Social Human-Robot Interaction, Frédéric C. Delaunay

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

As people respond strongly to faces and facial features, both consciously and subconsciously, faces are an essential aspect of social robots. Robotic faces and heads until recently belonged to one of the following categories: virtual, mechatronic or animatronic. As an original contribution to the field of human-robot interaction, I present the R-PAF technology (Retro-Projected Animated Faces): a novel robotic head displaying a real-time, computer-rendered face, retro-projected from within the head volume onto a mask, as well as its driving soft-ware designed with openness and portability to other hybrid robotic platforms in mind. The work constitutes the first implementation of a non-planar …

Duchamp Meets Turing: Art, Modernism, Posthuman, Gabriela Galati Jan 2016

Duchamp Meets Turing: Art, Modernism, Posthuman, Gabriela Galati

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In her book How We Became Posthuman (1999), Katherine Hayles analysed the process through which the conception of the liberal humanist subject led the way to the posthuman subject, a subject who lives in complete entwinement with the digital. This process, however, was not innocuous: it made the (fallacious) perception that information could do without material instantiation pervasive within many fields of knowledge, a process that Hayles contends originates in the Macy Conferences and the evolution of cybernetic theory. This research identifies an analogous process within the artistic realm: when Clement Greenberg delineated the concepts of opticality and colour field …

Performing Lgbt Pride In Plymouth 1950 - 2012, Alan Butler Jan 2016

Performing Lgbt Pride In Plymouth 1950 - 2012, Alan Butler

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis considers how the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered communities of Plymouth have performed and signified their own culture and identities during the period 1950 to 2012. Its source materials were largely generated by conducting oral history interviews with members of Plymouth’s LGB and T communities. This resulted in the creation of an archive which included thirty-seven interviews conducted with twenty-four individuals. These interviews, in conjunction with other uncovered archival memorabilia, now form a specific LGBT collection with Plymouth and West Devon Record Office. This PhD thesis interrogates this newly created community archive accession, using theories of performance as …

Development Of Recognition Memory: Process Dissociation Of Recollection And Familiarity In Children, Laura Koenig Jan 2016

Development Of Recognition Memory: Process Dissociation Of Recollection And Familiarity In Children, Laura Koenig

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

There is an extensive debate in the adult literature on whether recognition memory can better be explained by a single- or a dual-process account. Single-process accounts assume that a single memory strength signal underlies recognition. Dual-process accounts propose two independent processes, namely recollection (slow and associated with contextual details) and familiarity (fast and automatic). The aim of this dissertation was to advance this debate using a cognitive developmental approach. By investigating age-related changes of recognition memory across childhood as a function of theoretically motivated experimental manipulations, predictions drawn from single- and dual-process models of recognition memory were tested. We adapted …

That Dark Remembered Day - A Novel, And Critical Self-Reflection On Composition And The Editorial Process, Tom Vowler Jan 2016

That Dark Remembered Day - A Novel, And Critical Self-Reflection On Composition And The Editorial Process, Tom Vowler

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

My aim for That Dark Remembered Day was to create a work of fiction with a strong sense of the literary, one whose themes of violence, landscape and survivor guilt shone a light on the human condition, specifically the effects of post-war trauma on one family. The novel’s structure would be crucial in achieving its emotional heft, as each of the central characters is allocated at least one section, the reader experiencing events from disparate and increasingly illuminating perspectives. Fragmenting the book’s chronology (both throughout, but particularly in Part 3) by employing a technique of temporal blurring, helped to recreate …

The Use Of Feedback In Group Counseling In A State Vocational Rehabilitation Setting, Saara Grizzell, Julie Smart, Michael J. Lambert, Jamison Fargo Jan 2016

The Use Of Feedback In Group Counseling In A State Vocational Rehabilitation Setting, Saara Grizzell, Julie Smart, Michael J. Lambert, Jamison Fargo

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

This study examined the impact of providing progress feedback to individuals with disabilities receiving services at a state vocational rehabilitation (VR) agency. Thirty individuals were randomly assigned to receive either group therapy (treatment-as-usual, TAU) or group therapy plus feedback (treatment, Fb) during a 10-week counseling program at one of five agency offices. Each week, participants attended a 90-minute session and completed a measure of mental health (Outcome Questionnaire-45). Longitudinal multilevel models were used to evaluate the hypothesis that participation in the Fb group would lead to improved mental health. The effect of the intervention was conditional on receipt of public …

Opportunities And Risks In Online Gaming Environments, Benjamin George Sanders Jan 2016

Opportunities And Risks In Online Gaming Environments, Benjamin George Sanders

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) have evolved from traditional video games in that they embrace both the technology of the Internet and video games. The massive “exodus” from the physical offline world to online gaming communities brings with it not only a number of unique and exciting opportunities, but also a number of emerging and serious risks. This research set out to examine the unique opportunities and risks to vulnerable individuals, namely, young adults, teenagers and young children; all of whom are considered by many to be priority groups in the protection from harm. The purpose was to …

Female Virtue In Gothic Literature 1780-1810, Philippa Catnach Jan 2016

Female Virtue In Gothic Literature 1780-1810, Philippa Catnach

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

My thesis analyses presentations of the concept of female virtue in Gothic literature between 1780 and 1810 particularly by drawing on literary texts supplemented by contemporary non-literary sources in order to set out the background and definitions of my work. The word ‘virtue’ has come to mean ‘goodness’ or ‘morality’ but looking at eighteenth-century usage it has often been gendered female and nearly always had a sexual quality: female morality was irrevocably intertwined with a sexual code of conduct. Daughters (perhaps most famously in the mid eighteenth-century Pamela in Richardson’s popular 1740 novel of the same name) were reminded that …

A Grounded Theory Of International Postgraduate Students In A British University: Making The Grade, Patrick Mcmahon Jan 2016

A Grounded Theory Of International Postgraduate Students In A British University: Making The Grade, Patrick Mcmahon

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The aim of this study was to produce a grounded theory to describe the experiences of international students living in the UK and studying in a British university, and to understand and explain their behavioural responses to those experiences. Eighteen postgraduate international students were interviewed at a university in the south-west of England and the data was analysed using classic grounded theory methodology. The theory proposes that international students’ two biggest concerns are in regard to their English language skills and their detachment from home students. Students felt that their language skills were inadequate and they perceived themselves to be …

Embodying Topeng: Gender, Training And Intercultural Encounters, Tiffany Strawson Jan 2016

Embodying Topeng: Gender, Training And Intercultural Encounters, Tiffany Strawson

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This research centres on the Balinese performance tradition known as topeng which translates as Balinese masked dance-drama. In Bali this genre is performed traditionally in spaces reserved for religious ceremonies. The research questions the extent to which, and how, it may be possible for a non-Balinese person to embody a culturally coded, sacred object (the mask) and how a woman is able to make meaning and express herself within a genre which is traditionally the preserve of men. The research has therefore sought to develop an individual and intercultural approach to both the design of new masks and their performance. …

“Nobody's Ever Asked Me What It's Like”: The Role Of Family Networks In The Transitions Of Injured Soldiers Engaging With Higher Education., Wendy Lambert-Heggs Jan 2016

“Nobody's Ever Asked Me What It's Like”: The Role Of Family Networks In The Transitions Of Injured Soldiers Engaging With Higher Education., Wendy Lambert-Heggs

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

An increasing number of injured service personnel returning from active combat duty will not be redeployed and many of them face discharge from military service. A number of these men and women have sustained life-threatening injuries which may, if the individual survives, result in reduced physical and mental health functioning. This research is focused on the transitions and processes that injured personnel go through when contemplating a new career through engagement with a higher education programme of study. An in-depth qualitative case study of networks of intimacy was used, an approach developed by Heath and Fuller (2007) to explore how, …

Influence Of Built Environment On Physical Activity Outcomes Among African Americans In Community-Based Obesity Intervention Studies, Amanda Sue Thomas Jan 2016

Influence Of Built Environment On Physical Activity Outcomes Among African Americans In Community-Based Obesity Intervention Studies, Amanda Sue Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

More than sixty-five percent of people in the U.S. are considered overweight or obese. African-Americans in the U.S. have a higher risk of obesity than any other racial group. One way to reduce this statistic is physical activity. Recreational green spaces (parks) can serve as an avenue to complete the 150 min/wk of recommended physical activity for adults by the ACSM. Data from SISTAS and HEALS interventions, that recruited overweight/obese African-Americans from Columbia and Florence, SC, was used to assess the association of recreational green space (parks) around a residence and physical activity. Physical activity measures of RAPA questionnaire (self-report), …

Protocol For Care After Lymphoma (Caly) Trial: A Phase Ii Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial Of A Lymphoma Nurse-Led Model Of Survivorship Care, K Taylor, D Joske, M Bulsara, C Bulsara, L Monterosso

Nursing Papers and Journal Articles

Introduction: Lymphoma is the sixth most common cancer diagnosed in Australia and internationally. Owing to the aggressive nature of the disease and intensity of treatment, survivors face long-term effects that impact on quality of life. Current models of follow-up post-treatment fail to address these complex issues. Given that 74% of patients with lymphoma cancer now survive 5 years beyond diagnosis and treatment, it is important to address this gap in care.

Aim: To determine self-reported informational and practical needs, anxiety, depression, stress, coping and empowerment at baseline, 3 and 6 months.

Methods and analysis: A pilot randomised controlled trial will …

Global Human Trafficking: New Insights On An Old Crime, Joanna Surma Jan 2016

Global Human Trafficking: New Insights On An Old Crime, Joanna Surma

Master's Theses

Thousands of men, women, and children become victims to human trafficking each year. Almost every country in the world is affected by this heinous crime. Human trafficking exists in many different forms including sexual exploitation, slavery, forced labor or servitude, the removal of organs, child soldiers, etc. Despite the age-old practice being traced back to the 13th century, it continues to exist and even grow today. Unfortunately, not much research is available on the topic. Combating human trafficking is a growing priority for many governments; however, certain obstacles to data collection and analysis continue to exist. Recently, a new study …

Group-Level Differences Of Moral Foundations, Jeremy Winget Jan 2016

Group-Level Differences Of Moral Foundations, Jeremy Winget

Master's Theses

Previous research has started to map the moral domain for individual actors. In particular, Haidt and colleagues (Haidt, 2007, 2008; Haidt & Graham, 2007; Haidt & Joseph, 2004) have extended the moral domain beyond the traditional notions of justice and rights concerns. From this line of research, moral foundations theory emerged, which holds moral intuitions derive from innate psychological mechanisms that co-evolved with cultural institutions and practices. However, to date, there has not been a systematic demonstration of how these moral foundations operate within intergroup settings. Janoff-Bulman and Carnes (2013) have proposed a comprehensive model of the moral landscape that …

importance to understand how it influences affect, cognition, and behavior, especially given the violence of certain genres of music. The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between music and behavior, specifically to examine how the lyrics and background music interact to influence affective hostility and aggressive behavior. Data were collected from a sample of 168 students (61% Female; MAge = 19.24, SD = 2.470) at a large, private, Midwestern university to investigate this relationship. The music was manipulated by randomly assigning the participant to …

In Plain Sight: How Social Images In Education Shape The Social Identity Of Black Students, Kandyce Cabacar Jan 2016

In Plain Sight: How Social Images In Education Shape The Social Identity Of Black Students, Kandyce Cabacar

Master's Theses

This thesis will postulate social identity development in Black students is shaped by their school experience. Reviewing how racial grouping is a critical factor in how we engage with others socially, this study will curate the variables of society that assembles the Black image. Social construction influenced by media messages and the neighborhoods that determine our respective schools will also be analyzed. By borrowing from the research of social psychology and contributions of sociologists on race relations, this thesis will demonstrate how expectations influenced by racial stereotypes of Black students create a correlation to social identity. These findings are discussed …
