The Effects Of Eating Disorders And Menstrual Irregularity On Bone Mineral Density In Sorority Women: A Cross-Sectional Study, Rachel Robertson
The Effects Of Eating Disorders And Menstrual Irregularity On Bone Mineral Density In Sorority Women: A Cross-Sectional Study, Rachel Robertson
Honors Theses
Past research has reported bone loss among women diagnosed with eating disorders as a direct result of estrogen imbalance (Cobb et al., 2003; Gibson et al., 1999; Kim et al., 2012; Zuckerman-Levin et al., 2014). Menstrual irregularity may result from estrogen imbalance, which is characteristic of an eating disorder and ultimately causes bone loss. Past studies have focused on this three-way relationship between eating disorders, menstrual irregularity, and bone mineral density (BMD) specifically in female athletes (Cobb et al., 2003; Gibson, Mitchell, Reeve, & Harries, 1999) but rarely in recreationally trained or sedentary females. Previous research has also focused on …

Needs And Contradictions Of A Changing Field: Evidence From A National Response To Intervention Implementation Study, Eva N. Patrikakou, Melissa S. Ockerman, Amy Feiker Hollenbeck
College of Education Faculty and Staff Works
As a result of the Response to Intervention (RTI) mandate in schools across many states, school counselors are well-positioned to take a leadership role. The present research study examines how school counselors across the nation perceived their training and knowledge of RTI, as well as their confidence in its implementation. Results indicate that while the majority of school counselors reported positive beliefs about RTI, they had limited confidence in their preparedness to perform certain RTI-related responsibilities, including collecting and analyzing data to determine intervention effectiveness and collaboration through teamwork. These perceived areas of deficiency point to a significant discrepancy with …
The Effects Of Sceletium Tortuosum In The Chick Anxiety-Depression Model, Emily Mae Fountain
The Effects Of Sceletium Tortuosum In The Chick Anxiety-Depression Model, Emily Mae Fountain
Honors Theses
Sceletium tortuosum (S. tortuosum), known colloquially as Kanna, is a natural botanical that is thought to reduce anxiety, elevate mood, and produce euphoria. This study explores S. tortuosum's properties in the chick anxiety-depression model, a pre-clinical drug efficacy screening model that shares many features to clinical stress-related disorders and has high predictive validity. Socially-raised male Silver Laced Wyandotte chicks age 4-6 days were given intraperitoneal injections of either a vehicle, imipramine, or S. tortuosum fraction (10, 20, 30, 50, 75, or 100mg/kg) 15 minutes prior to being placed in a stress-inducing isolation chamber for 60 minutes and distress vocalizations were …
Exploration In The Effectiveness Of Solid Lipid Nanoparticle Formulations In Enhancing Ocular Delivery Of Win 55, 212 In The Management Of Glaucoma, Emily Ann Nesbit
Exploration In The Effectiveness Of Solid Lipid Nanoparticle Formulations In Enhancing Ocular Delivery Of Win 55, 212 In The Management Of Glaucoma, Emily Ann Nesbit
Honors Theses
Glaucoma is a progressive and degenerative ocular disease which, without proper treatment, can result in permanent blindness. Due to a complex organization of lipophilic and hydrophilic ocular membranes, topical delivery of therapeutic agents has also proved to be a challenging task. Cannabinoids, such as Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), have intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering and neuroprotective capabilities. Due to the unfavorable physiochemical characteristics of these molecules, delivery into the eye through a topical route is very difficult. Previous research has shown that prodrug derivatization and formulations such as solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) improve the physiochemical characteristics and ocular bioavailability of such molecules. WIN …
Leading As Nudging: Optimizing Healthcare Delivery Systems Management In Mississippi, Grant Beebe
Leading As Nudging: Optimizing Healthcare Delivery Systems Management In Mississippi, Grant Beebe
Honors Theses
Three factors predominantly affect the delivery of healthcare services in the State of Mississippi: 1) the ability to access comprehensive, preventative care; 2) negative perceptions of the Affordable Care Act and similar reform efforts on the part of state and federal agencies; and 3) evolving reimbursement structures affecting the revenue streams of providers. There is a growing consensus among residents, providers, managers, and policy makers, which are key stakeholders in the overall wellness of our State, that preventative care addressing these three factors could play a pivotal role in improving public health. Through the development of a nudge framework of …

Loyalty Marketing To Millennials, Debra L. Whitley
Loyalty Marketing To Millennials, Debra L. Whitley
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine the most effective techniques businesses use to attract and retain loyalty program memberships targeted to the Millennial demographic group. The methodology used to reach insights around this topic includes secondary and primary research that aided in the understanding of the effectiveness of communication strategies used to appeal to Millennial consumers. Initially, the researcher conducted secondary research by consulting books and surveys written by industry professionals as well as scholarly articles. Next, the researcher designed two electronic surveys. One survey had 63 anonymous respondents and the other survey had 119 anonymous respondents, all …
The Role Of A National Intelligence Estimate In Advancing U.S. Interests And Principles: A Case Study Of Human Trafficking In Brazil, Audrey Mooney
The Role Of A National Intelligence Estimate In Advancing U.S. Interests And Principles: A Case Study Of Human Trafficking In Brazil, Audrey Mooney
Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the role National Intelligence Estimates [NIEs] in a current world scenario—human trafficking in Brazil, and the value NIEs add to the Intelligence Community [IC] and US policy makers. The IC uses NIEs as a tool to assess future implications that actions could have on the United States and how those actions can impact U.S. interests. NIEs became prominent when the National Security Act of 1947 was established, which highlighted the need for new and alternative analysis within the IC. This thesis will also investigate how approaches known as Structured Analytic Techniques [SATs] …
Food For Thought: The Role Of Food In Romantic Relationships, Breana Cook
Food For Thought: The Role Of Food In Romantic Relationships, Breana Cook
Honors Theses
Food is a necessary component of our lives as we need it to live. However, food can be seen as a relatively important, unconscious or not, factor in interpersonal relationships. We investigated the role of food and cooking in modern, romantic relationships through surveying 68 individuals from a junior college in the southern region of the United States. We predicted that there was a connection between food and dating and relationships and concluded this by exploring the social stigmas surrounding food, the gendered perceptions of these stigmas, and perception of food in a certain context to assess the meaning of …
Food With Integrity: A Financial Analysis Of Chipotle Mexican Grill, Kaylie M. Rowell
Food With Integrity: A Financial Analysis Of Chipotle Mexican Grill, Kaylie M. Rowell
Honors Theses
For the accounting alternative thesis, we were to pick a publicly traded company domiciled in the U.S that we were interested in and research their financials, business, and industry. I chose Chipotle Mexican Grill due to their unique restaurant brand. Chipotle's Food with Integrity campaign makes up their main brand, but brings the issue of finding enough suppliers to meet their needs. If Chipotle has to use processed food to fulfill the lack of the natural, organic food then they will eventually lose their customer's trust. Chipotle has also expanded globally so there are always issues that appear when dealing …
The Social Web: Leveraging Social Capital To Maximize Relationships And Minimize Churn In The Telecommunications Industry, Kristen Ellis
The Social Web: Leveraging Social Capital To Maximize Relationships And Minimize Churn In The Telecommunications Industry, Kristen Ellis
Honors Theses
As innovation in technology continues to be a driving force in the telecommunications industry, companies are left struggling to provide services of equal caliber to maintain satisfaction and remain relevant in the eyes of consumers. Because of this, a common misunderstanding many companies have is thinking that the best way to retain or acquire new consumers is solely through innovation. While still very important, companies must also strive to better understand the needs of their customers with regard to the cultivation and maintenance of social capital. The purpose of this thesis was to examine how social capital is becoming a …

The Impact Of Survival Processing And Collaborative Inhibition On Memory Performance, Lindsey Hardin
Honors Theses
This study examines the effects of survival processing and collaborative inhibition on memory performance. The purpose of this research is to determine whether survival processing produced more accurate memory recall than pleasantness processing, as well as determine the impact of collaborative inhibition when compared to nominal groups. In this experiment, participants were given the instructions to rate a given list of words based on survival or pleasantness depending on which scenario they were assigned to. Then, the participants recalled the list of words in either collaborative groups or nominal groups. The results indicated that the survival condition did produce better …
The Evolution Of The Sugarcoated American Food Market And The Paradox Of Artificial Sweeteners, Mary Moses Hitt
The Evolution Of The Sugarcoated American Food Market And The Paradox Of Artificial Sweeteners, Mary Moses Hitt
Honors Theses
Living in present-day America makes it hard to imagine an era when sugar was not as inexpensive and readily available as it is now. It is in little colorful packets on restaurant tables, filled to the brim in jars at coffee shops, or mixed into candy products located at the beginning of every cash register. Today, sugar is one of, if not, the most widely consumed food products in the world, but our love for sugar is nothing new. Humans have been experiencing the bliss triggered by sweet-tasting foods since their earliest diets, which included fruits and honey. Our diets …

Tobacco And Cannabis: The Evolution Of Pertinent Rules And Regulations And Subsequent Financial Ramifications, Palmer Avisto
Honors Theses
My thesis will discuss the evolution of the regulations surrounding tobacco and cannabis and the subsequent financial ramifications later posed on pertaining companies and the industries themselves. I will also briefly discuss the evolution of tobacco advertisements and the introduction of e-cigarettes into the tobacco market. Concerning newly legalized cannabis stores, I will discuss the struggle to acquire financial tools, the state-Federal disagreement, and proposed solutions to those issues. Both having been deemed public enemy number one, I will compare marijuana and tobacco regarding health effects, profitability after new laws, and their overall economic profitability for the country. I researched …

It's About Time: The Effectiveness Of Time Perception As A Measurement Of Cognitive Load, Victoria Robinson
It's About Time: The Effectiveness Of Time Perception As A Measurement Of Cognitive Load, Victoria Robinson
Honors Theses
This study examines the effectiveness of time perception as a measurement of cognitive load. The purpose of this research is to determine whether the concept of time perception can efficiently indicate high or low cognitive load in a task, and to compare this measurement to the standard mental effort rating scale that is typically used to measure cognitive load. In this study, participants completed both simple and complicated math problems at their own pace. After they were told to stop, participants either rated their level of mental effort used in the task, or wrote down how long they believed it …
Analyzing The Growing Islamic Radicalization In France, Virginia Ruth Brommer
Analyzing The Growing Islamic Radicalization In France, Virginia Ruth Brommer
Honors Theses
Islamic radicalization in European countries is becoming more and more prevalent, as evidenced by the number of recent attacks by Muslims in Europe. I argue that the social, religious, and psychological environment in France creates a unique opportunity for Islamic radicalization, particularly through social media and in prisons. After defining radicalization and explaining two radicalization processes as well as different types of radicals, I analyze the specific factors present in France that contribute to this radicalization. I use case study analysis to examine several French citizens who radicalized, either online or in prison, in order to show how the recruiter …
The Theoretical Argument For Disproving Asymptotic Upper-Bounds On The Accuracy Of Part-Of-Speech Tagging Algorithms: Adopting A Linguistics, Rule-Based Approach, William Foley
Honors Theses
This paper takes a deep dive into a particular area of the interdisciplinary domain of Computational Linguistics, Part-of-Speech Tagging algorithms. The author relies primarily on scholarly Computer Science and Linguistics papers to describe previous approaches to this task and the often-hypothesized existence of the asymptotic accuracy rate of around 98%, by which this task is allegedly bound. However, after doing more research into why the accuracy of previous algorithms have behaved in this asymptotic manner, the author identifies valid and empirically-backed reasons why the accuracy of previous approaches do not necessarily reflect any sort of general asymptotic bound on the …
Practical Faith: How Southern Black Women And White Women Used Their Faith In Pursuit Of Equality, Holly Baer
Practical Faith: How Southern Black Women And White Women Used Their Faith In Pursuit Of Equality, Holly Baer
Honors Theses
This thesis explores how Southern black and white women used their Christian faith in the pursuit of racial and gender equality, showing how feminist theory and religious doctrine function in reality and everyday practice. The first chapter looks at upper and middle class white women's experiences from the Antebellum period through the early twentieth century, and shows how they used their faith to gain autonomy by manipulating common religious beliefs of the time. The second chapter examines black women's experiences, primarily during the Civil Rights Era, and shows that black women had to approach equality as vocal activists, rather than …
Design And Synthesis Of Dual Opioids/Npff Ligands As Novel Analgesics With Reduced Tolerance Potential, John N. Yi
Design And Synthesis Of Dual Opioids/Npff Ligands As Novel Analgesics With Reduced Tolerance Potential, John N. Yi
Honors Theses
Opioid use has become prevalent in today's culture. As a treatment for acute and chronic pain, opioids permeate in the public sphere as a seemingly easy solution. However, problems that come from the increased use of opiates, especially in the last fifteen years, have shown detrimental effects in society. Not only are all opioid-based analgesics considered addictive, but the nature of such painkillers also enables a phenomenon known as tolerance, where the body adapts to the use of exogenous opioids. This creates a situation where a more potent dose of painkiller is required for the same analgesic effect. The focus …
An Examination Of The College Major Decisions Of Students At The University Of Mississippi, Jonathan P. Evans
An Examination Of The College Major Decisions Of Students At The University Of Mississippi, Jonathan P. Evans
Honors Theses
Factors such as socio-economic status affect students' level of educational aspiration. Furthermore, major (and thus career choice) may be influenced by race or gender. This study demonstrates the effects of academic aptitude, race, gender, first generation status, and importance of expected future earnings on undergraduate students' college major decision. More specifically, this study examines if these factors lead to an increase or decrease in the probability of students choosing a major in a specific field. The likelihood of choosing a major in a specific field is relative a baseline category, which can be changed.
More Than Skin Deep: An Examination Of The Negative Effects Of Advertising On Women, Kathryn A. Bridgers
More Than Skin Deep: An Examination Of The Negative Effects Of Advertising On Women, Kathryn A. Bridgers
Honors Theses
This thesis will examine how the way women are portrayed in advertising creates an unattainable ideal standard of beauty and negatively affects the self- image of women. The first chapter will look back on the history of advertising to women. It will examine where this ideal standard of beauty originated from and how it was spread throughout American society. The next chapter explores how advertisers use specific psychological techniques to sell not only a product to consumers, but also sell an ideal, attitude or lifestyle. The third chapter examines trends in advertisements, such as objectifying and sexualizing women, stereotyping women …
Exogenous Barriers To The Incorporation Of The Second Generation North Africans In France, Amber Malone
Exogenous Barriers To The Incorporation Of The Second Generation North Africans In France, Amber Malone
Honors Theses
Immigration is a polemic subject in French society today. The 2005 riots in the banlieue and the government's response to the outraged and discontented immigrant populations brought forth a topic left out of public discourse for years before the heavily televised protests. At the forefront of this public debate surrounding identity and incorporation was one of France's largest immigrant populations, North Africans. Marginalization of a particular group often appears in the terms of social and cultural conflict. While this is true, incorporation of the culture of migrants and their representation in French society are not the only exogenous factors that …

The Person You're Waiting For: Stories, Charles Ramsay Mccrory
The Person You're Waiting For: Stories, Charles Ramsay Mccrory
Honors Theses
This collection of short fiction explores family, grief, and trauma from a variety of perspectives. Other themes spanning these five stories include parent-child bonds, addiction and recovery, and sexuality. Two pairs of stories (The Parents and The Painter, and Johnnie Walker and Staying Late, respectively) are linked in terms of character and setting; the middle story, Limits, is linked only tenuously to the last two stories through a common character. As stated in my introduction, I wrote each story on its own terms; I did not consider each story's placement in a collection until I had written and edited them …
Effects Of Coloring On Immediate Short-Term Stress Relief, Courtney Simmons
Effects Of Coloring On Immediate Short-Term Stress Relief, Courtney Simmons
Honors Theses
Although research has not yet examined adult coloring books specifically, research suggests that artmaking can reduce negative affect, improve mood, and reduce anxiety (Drake & Hodge, 2015; Pizarro, 2004) and that coloring, specifically, can reduce anxiety on a short-term basis (Curry & Kasser, 2005; van der Vennet & Serice, 2012). These short-term effects are seen more strongly when participants are using art as a form of distraction from their negative feelings rather than as a way to vent (Dalebroux et al., 2008; De Petrillo & Winner, 2005; Drake & Winner, 2012). The present study seeks to expand upon this knowledge …
War Chiefs And Generals: The Transformation Of Warfare In The Eastern Woodlands, Dalton Capps
War Chiefs And Generals: The Transformation Of Warfare In The Eastern Woodlands, Dalton Capps
Honors Theses
In this thesis, I examine how military strategies and tactics of Native Americans and Euro Americans changed over time after they came into contact with each other in the Eastern Woodlands. I accomplish this goal by covering in detail three conflicts: Hernando De Soto's expedition into the Southeastern United States, King Philip's War, and the Northwest Indian War. By using these three conflicts, I examine this transformation from both a temporal and spatial perspective. I approach this point of inquiry by using a variety of primary and secondary sources. The secondary sources come from a variety of fields, but mainly …
