Gaps In Pain Management In Assisted Living, Pamela G. Wisor Dec 2016

Gaps In Pain Management In Assisted Living, Pamela G. Wisor

DNP and Student Works

Assisted living (AL) is a growing lifestyle choice option available to the ailing aged in the United States. Increases in chronic disease may predispose this population to acute and chronic pain due to increased longevity with medical advances. The elderly populations in these facilities are frail with multiple chronic illnesses and cognitive and/or functional impairment adding to the difficulty in effective pain management practices. The burden of providing pain management in AL is on the nursing assistant whose education and scope of practice may not include performing pain assessment that impact resident quality of life and outcomes. Continuing education in …

How To Enhance Qualitative Research Appraisal: Development Of The Methodological Congruence Instrument, Annette M. Willgens, Robin Cooper, Doles Jadotte, Bruce Lilyea, Cynthia L. Langtiw, Alice Obenchain-Leeson

The Qualitative Report

In this research report, we introduce a methodological congruence instrument (MCI) that addresses the five major qualitative research traditions. Methodological congruence is a "fit" between the researcher's chosen methodology and his/her philosophical perspective. The chosen methodology should be aligned with the research question, data collection and sampling procedures, philosophical perspectives and seminal authors, data analysis, and findings. These elements are contained in the MCI. We share information about its inception, development, and application, and invite our research colleagues to offer critical feedback. It is our hope that qualitative researchers, editorial board members, teachers, and students find this instrument helpful and …

Cyberbullying In Rural Communities: Origin And Processing Through The Lens Of Older Adolescents, Lisa Reason, Michael Boyd, Casey Reason Dec 2016

Cyberbullying In Rural Communities: Origin And Processing Through The Lens Of Older Adolescents, Lisa Reason, Michael Boyd, Casey Reason

The Qualitative Report

The experiences of older adolescent cyberbullying victims from a rural community were explored in this qualitative study. Findings revealed that cyberbullying originates primarily as the result of jealousy over romantic relationships and cultural, religious, or sexual orientation intolerance. Participants also indicated that cyberbullies tend to be more brazen and cruel as the result of perceived anonymity. In addition, participants reported feelings of helplessness and rage in response to the attacks. Finally, participants suggested that the lack of knowledge and understanding of cyberspace resulted in a lack of emotional support and protection against cyberbullying.

European Management Studies

Research on corporate networks can be seen as a modern management imperative resulting from significant determinants of the environment and the development of new business models. The aim of this article is to present the main issues of network research in strategic management in the context of use of social network analysis (SNA). The choice of a theoretical basis for explaining the processes and mechanisms of the network, specification of the type of tested network and the type of relations, as well as determination of the level of network analysis are recognised as the most important problems. Spacex: Breaking The Barrier To The Space Launch Vehicle Industry, Matthew M. Liskowcyz

Theses and Dissertations

The Space Launch Vehicle (SLV) industry has been around for a long time, but few companies have managed to enter this industry. SpaceX was founded only 10 years ago, but it has managed to become a leader in the U.S. industry and a dominant player worldwide. The purpose of this thesis research is to discover what it took for SpaceX to break into this tightly controlled industry. A qualitative analysis was performed to compare SpaceX to companies that overcame the barriers of entry for their respective industries. SpaceX, like FedEx, could implement a unique technique to the industry and find …

The Perceived Social Norms Of Courtship Initiation In Various Social Situations, Peter Ray Concepcion Dec 2016

The Perceived Social Norms Of Courtship Initiation In Various Social Situations, Peter Ray Concepcion

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

There have been a small number of studies that have examined different aspects of courtship such as courtship strategies, forms of communication, and various factors that affect the level of attraction between two individuals. However, very few researchers have examined the common techniques or methods that individuals use when initiating courtship. The current study investigated the common techniques that college students prefer when initiating courtship, whether there were any differences between men and women, and whether there was a difference in on-campus and off-campus scenarios regarding the most commonly preferred method. Forty-three undergraduate students, 36 females and 7 males, at …

The Relationship Between Conceptions Of Free Will And Meaning In Life, Sofia Softas-Nall Dec 2016

The Relationship Between Conceptions Of Free Will And Meaning In Life, Sofia Softas-Nall

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Current research asks the question: 'How do our conceptions of free will influence our sense of meaning in life?' (Caruso, 2014; Pereboom, 2014). Many philosophers and psychologists fear that if people cease to believe in free will they will be subject to feelings of meaninglessness (May, 1953; Strawson, 1962). Others argue that people without a belief in free will would not lack one's sense of meaning in life (Caruso, 2014). I aim to investigate this debate empirically and I hypothesize that people with stronger conceptions of free will report higher levels of meaning in life. In order to examine this …

Building age-friendly communities is a global as well as a national concern. The purpose of this paper is to explore fundamental tensions underlying the formulation of age-friendly goals and their implementation, based on a review of age-friendly projects and reflections on the journey towards age friendliness in one state (Rhode Island). The authors conducted a comprehensive investigation of the relevant literature on previous age-friendly initiatives, which included case studies of individual projects, meta-analyses of age-friendly work, and educational toolkits for promoting age-friendly community. Tapping The Potential Of El Paraprofessionals Through Professional Development, Michaela Colombo, Qing Zhao, Heidi Perez Dec 2016

Tapping The Potential Of El Paraprofessionals Through Professional Development, Michaela Colombo, Qing Zhao, Heidi Perez

TAPESTRY

Many paraprofessionals provide instructional support to English Learners (ELs), yet little research exists regarding their preparedness. Research on paraprofessionals in special education suggests that paraprofessionals are often under-prepared for their responsibilities. This paper explores ongoing professional development (PD) for paraprofessionals using findings from a study of the first year of a 5-year PD initiative for 109 paraprofessionals who worked with ELs in a high-poverty, high-minority urban district. Study findings are derived from the analysis of 57 participant reflection journals, interviews with 12 paraprofessional participants, a focus group with six PD providers, and de-identified observation and focus group data provided by …

Schemes And Sense: Teaching Creative Writing With Design In Mind, Ben Gunsberg Dec 2016

Schemes And Sense: Teaching Creative Writing With Design In Mind, Ben Gunsberg

Journal of Creative Writing Studies

This essay proposes a theoretical conception of design particularly suited for the creative writing classroom and suggests teaching strategies that enhance what I refer to as students’ design sense. Drawing upon the work of Francis Christensen, I highlight instructional approaches that reposition and reformat texts on the page such that the functional relationships between sentence elements are made more concrete and thus more comprehensible to students. I argue that by helping students see the subtle part-to-part and part-to-whole dynamics within sentences, creative writing teachers inspire students to move beyond their usual stylistic and syntactical tendencies.

Optimism As A Mediating Factor In The Relationship Between Anxiety And News Media Exposure In College Students, Danielle Hoyt Dec 2016

Optimism As A Mediating Factor In The Relationship Between Anxiety And News Media Exposure In College Students, Danielle Hoyt

Honors Projects in Applied Psychology

Recently, media research has focused on young people to determine what effect violent media images may have on aggressive behavior, but little research has investigated the kind of psychological distress similar images may cause. What emotional impact does increased exposure to negative and even violent news coverage have on young adults? In this study, the relationship between such news media and anxiety levels is examined, as well as the possible mediating role that an optimistic life orientation may play in that relationship. It is hypothesized that the degree to which these individuals follow news media will positively correlate with their …

Re-Optimization Of Radiation Therapy Dose To The Prostate Using Cbct: Reducing Dose To Organs At Risk, R. Charles Keider Jr. Dec 2016

Re-Optimization Of Radiation Therapy Dose To The Prostate Using Cbct: Reducing Dose To Organs At Risk, R. Charles Keider Jr.

Masters Theses

Cancer of the prostate is the second most common cancer among American males. The prostate is small gland, located in the pelvis, posterior to the bladder and anterior/inferior to the rectum. Due to this location when irradiating the prostate the normal tissue organs at risk are the bladder and rectum. Negative effects seen when these structures are irradiated can include; bladder stricture, dysuria, hematuria, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and proctitis.

In order to eliminate or reduce these negative effects more precise and accurate treatment techniques have been employed. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) has been successful in achieving greater precision when …

Pro-Islamic State Twitter Users In A Post-Suspension Era, Colby Grace Dec 2016

Pro-Islamic State Twitter Users In A Post-Suspension Era, Colby Grace

Theses and Dissertations

Twitters efforts to silence pro-IS users has been largely unsuccessful. I apply discourse analysis techniques to better understand why that is. The findings demonstrate that Twitter’s account suspension campaign is outmatched by a community that now values account suspensions as a right of passage. I propose a new method.
